Artefact is een tentoonstelling en festival waarin hedendaagse kunst, actualiteit en maatschappelijke uitdagingen centraal staan. Parallel Crossings neemt de korte tekst hiernaast van de in 2017 overleden kunstenaar stanley brouwn als vertrek- en knooppunt. brouwn ontplooide in zijn oeuvre een verhouding tot de wereld, een verhouding die hij constant herkwalificeerde door de beweging van het wandelen en het gebruik van afmetingen, afstanden en verplaatsingen.

Mensen, natuur, geld, data, goederen … alles rondom ons, heel dichtbij en eindeloos veraf, is steeds in beweging. De kunstenaars in deze tentoonstelling staan doorgaans niet in het centrum van de brandende actualiteit. Ze bewegen zich stil en ontrafelen de diepe aard van de mens als bewegend wezen. Via feitelijke of imaginaire verplaatsingen in tijd en ruimte krijgen werelden hun steeds veranderlijke vorm.

Parallel Crossings wordt een ontmoetingsplek waar verschillende bewegingen samenkomen, elkaar doorkruisen of bijna aanraken.

Artefact is an exhibition and festival on contemporary visual arts, current events and societal challenges. Parallel Crossings takes the text by stanley brouwn on the opposite page as its starting and crossing point. brouwn developed in his body of work a relation to the world, a relation which he constantly requalified by the act of walking and the use and reconsideration of measurements, distances and movements.

Human beings, nature, money, data, goods …, all around us, nearby or very far away, everything is continuously in flux. The artists in this exhibition do not position themselves in the focal points of current events. They move quietly and unravel the deeper nature of mankind as a species in constant motion. Through factual and imaginary movements in time and space, worlds find their ever-changing forms.

Parallel Crossings will be a meeting place where different movements come together, crossing or almost touching each other.

In de film Foyer experimenteert Ismaïl Bahri met een wit blad papier dat hij op enkele centimeters voor de lens van zijn camera plaatst. Het idee erachter was aanvankelijk vrij eenvoudig: met de camera in de straten van Tunis kijken hoe deze papieren afscheiding verandert door het licht, beweegt in de wind, verduistert door een voorbijdrijvende wolk of een persoon of object die te dicht komt …

‘Het experiment veranderde wanneer voorbijgangers, aangetrokken door deze opstelling, me begonnen aan te spreken en vragen te stellen’, zo stelt Bahri. ‘Toen begreep ik dat deze woorden en stemmen het blanco blad vulden met poëtische en politieke inhoud, even subtiel als onverwacht. Het werk kwam tevoorschijn op een manier die enigszins gelijkaardig is aan hoe licht inwerkt op een filmstrook: het werd geleidelijk getransformeerd door wat er mee gebeurde en door de omgeving waarin werd gefilmd. Zoals een vuur waarrond we samenkomen wordt het filmdoek een foyer waar verschillende projecties en visies elkaar ontmoeten, maar ook een plaats waar de verschillen binnen deze gemeenschap van toeschouwers tot leven komen.’

E Foyer is a film work resulting from experiments in filming with a sheet of white paper placed a few centimetres in front of the camera lens. The, initially very simple, intuition behind this experiment was to take the camera into the streets of Tunis and observe the way this dividing element changes with the surrounding light, vibrates according to the movements of air, darkens with the passing of a cloud or when a person or object moves close …

‘The experiment shifted when passersby, attracted by this device, approached me to question me and talk,’ Bahri says. ‘I then understood that these words and voices filled this blank paper both with poetic and political content, just as subtle as it was unexpected. The film appeared somewhat in the way a roll of film is impressed by light when exposed to it: it was progressively affected by what happened to it, the environment in which it was shot. Like the fire around which we gather, the cinema screen becomes the foyer where varying projections meet, but also a place of divergence amongst this community of onlookers.’

If you pause the work, the images become completely abstract.

There is no way that you could figure out what you are looking at without the movement. So the movement in these works is really the most fundamental way your brain understands what you are looking at. It’s the primal aspect of what the image is.

De installatie Exploded View (Commuters) toont een tweedimensionaal bewegend beeld dat wordt opgebouwd aan de hand van 1.152 leds die in een driedimensionaal grid hangen. Als we het werk frontaal bekijken, zien we in de flikkerende lampjes elkaar kruisende pendelaars in het Grand Central Station, in New York. Komen we dichterbij of bekijken we het werk vanuit een andere hoek, dan wordt het bewegende licht abstract en schijnbaar willekeurig.

Reeds vele jaren werkt Jim Campbell aan gepixelde representaties en ‘projecties’ die met zo weinig kleine lichtpunten worden gecreëerd dat de toeschouwer het gepresenteerde eigenlijk niet zou kunnen begrijpen. En toch, door de mogelijkheid van het brein om abstracte data te interpreteren en ontbrekende informatie zelf aan te vullen, herkent de kijker een beeld.

Exploded View (Commuters) expands a flat, two-dimensional moving image into a three-dimensional space comprised of 1,152 hanging LEDs. When viewed from the front, the flickering of LEDs is recognised as commuters bustling through Grand Central Station, New York.

Move closer or off axis and the flickering lights become abstract, seemingly random.

For many years, Jim Campbell has presented pixilated representations and ‘projections’ using scores of tiny lights, whereby a viewer should not be able to comprehend what they are seeing. And yet, because of the brain’s ability to interpret abstract data and fill in the gaps to create a complete picture; a viewer completes the work in their mind’s eye, so to speak, and recognises an image.

In Caminhando (Walking) stelt kunstenares Lygia Clark een actie voor waarbij het publiek zichzelf met een schaar een weg baant door een papieren möbiusband:

‘Neem een schaar, steek een punt in het papier en knip doorlopend langs de lengte van de strook. Let op dat je de bestaande snijlijn niet doorkruist, dat zou de band in twee afzonderlijke stukken scheiden.

Als je langs de gehele omtrek van de möbiusband bent gegaan, is het aan jou om te beslissen om links of rechts van de reeds geknipte lijn te knippen. Het idee dat je een keuze hebt, is cruciaal. De unieke betekenis van die ervaring is de fysieke uitvoering ervan. Het werk is enkel jouw actie. Hoe je de strook inknipt, bepaalt hoe verfijnder of intenser de vervlechting wordt. Op het einde is het spoor zo nauw geworden dat je het niet verder kan openen. Het is het einde van de weg.

Probeer tijdens het knippen niet te denken aan wat je al geknipt hebt of aan wat je nog zal knippen.

Ik gebruik voor dit experiment een möbiusband omdat het onze ruimtelijke gewoontes doorbreekt, rechts-links, voor-achter … het geeft ons een ervaring van een tijd zonder limieten en een steeds doorlopende ruimte.

Zelfs indien dit voorstel niet als een kunstwerk wordt aangezien en zelfs als men sceptisch staat ten opzichte van wat het impliceert, is het toch nodig het te doen.

Er is slechts één type van duur: de actie. De uitvoering is datgene wat de Caminhando produceert. Niets bestaat eraan voorafgaand en niets erna.’

E In Caminhando (Walking), artist Lygia Clark proposes the following action in which the audience cuts a path through a paper Moebius strip: ‘Take a pair of scissors, stick one point into the surface and cut continuously along the length of the strip. Take care not to converge with the preexisting cut – to avoid separating the strip into two pieces. Once you have completed cutting a full circuit of the Moebius strip, it’s up to you whether to cut to the left or the right of the cut you’ve already made. The idea of choice is capital. The unique meaning of this experience is the act of doing it. The work is your act alone. The extent of your cutting refines and redoubles the strip into a complex of interlacings. Eventually, the path is so narrow that you can’t open it further.

This is the end of the trail.

While you are cutting, try not to know what you are going to cut and what you have cut already.

I use a Moebius strip for this experiment because it breaks our spatial habits: right and left, front and back, etc. It allows us to live the experience of continuous space and of time without a limit.

It is necessary to carry out the act – despite whether this proposition is considered a work of art, and even if one remains sceptical in relation to what it implies.

There is only one type of duration: the act. The act is that which produces the Caminhando. Nothing exists before and nothing afterwards.’

Een deel van een houten vloer van een verdwenen privaat appartement is verwijderd en verplaatst om heel nauwkeurig gereconstrueerd te worden in de tentoonstelling. De blauwdrukken van een woning en een kunstruimte overlappen elkaar en creëren een sculpturale ruimte die sporen in zich draagt van kleine geschiedenissen.

De vloer wordt een fotogram dat zeer traag vorm krijgt door de levens van haar bewoners – vlekken ontstaan door een lek in de keuken, een verkleuring op de plaats waar meubels stonden, een barst in een drempel … Dat beeld is nu gekaderd door de architectuur van de tentoonstellingszaal.

A section of a parquet floor, once part of a private apartment, was removed, relocated and precisely reconstructed within the exhibition space. The blueprint of a home and a gallery overlap, creating a sculptural space bearing the imprints of micro-histories.

A floor becomes a photogram of the lives of its inhabitants, formed slowly over time: stains from a leak in the kitchen, a discolouration where the furniture used to stand, a chipped edge of the threshold …

This image is now framed by the architecture of a gallery.

In Tour reproduceren drie metalen structuren op een tafel de plooilijnen van drie opengevouwen kaarten. De landen, referenties, straten en woorden die ze benoemen, zijn verdwenen. We hebben enkel nog de naden van wat ooit een grondplan was.

Curator Alejandra Aguado schrijft over Jorge Macchi: ‘De kracht van zijn werk ligt zowel in wat er wordt gezegd als wat er wordt stilgehouden. Je zou kunnen stellen dat het werk aarzelt tussen aanwezigheid en afwezigheid: op een bijna geestachtige wijze bewegend tussen wat wordt onthuld en wat verdwijnt in situaties die ons verbluffen.’

The work Tour consists of three metal structures on a table reproducing the folding lines of three unfolded maps. The countries, references, streets and place names have been eliminated. All that remains are the angular lines delineating a map.

Curator Alejandra Aguado writes about Jorge Macchi: ‘The power of his work lies in what is kept silent as much as in what is said. His work vacillates between vast absences and presences: ghost-like, it operates according to what is revealed or vanishes in situations that perplex us.’

Although my background is a product of two continents and cultures, I have never experienced this as something that needs to be reconciled: the two backgrounds are already reconciled within me, they are what makes me ‘me’. The ‘reconciliation’ I attempt in the film is to expose a hitherto obscured aspect of Glasgow’s history, counterpointing it with the Glasgow that is depicted in the archive. Glasgow’s culture is a product of a continuous influx of diverse aspects of human experiences and histories, but when I searched the archive for footage taken in the 1960s and 70s there was an almost total lack of depictions of Glasgow’s Asian citizens. It was this ‘gap’ in the archive that prompted my decision to restrict human presence to verbal description contained in the voice over until the final shot, which was the only footage I found of a non-white child from that period.

De film Points of Departure is opgebouwd als een vlechtwerk van objecten en plaatsen die we niet kunnen achterlaten. Een voice over beschrijft een tafelkleed dat Alia Syed meenam toen ze het huis van haar oude vader leeghaalde en exploreert Syeds persoonlijke en collectieve herinneringen aan Glasgow, de stad waarin ze opgroeide. De film probeert het geheugen van dat alledaags object te ontrafelen en zoekt naar een beeld in het archief van de BBC dat Syeds kinderjaren in Glasgow kan representeren. De pogingen van haar vader om een Urdu Ghazal – een poëtische expressie over de schoonheid van de liefde en de pijn van verlies – te vertalen, vormen de leidraad doorheen het labyrint van Syeds eigen geheugen en dat van het BBC-archief.

Points of Departure doorbreekt het normatieve en cultureel dominante beeld van Glasgows ‘cityscapes’ en voegt er een Schots-Aziatische aanwezigheid aan toe. Na een onsuccesvolle zoektocht in het archief naar beelden waarin Syed zich als kind van gemengde afkomst kan herkennen, komt ze tot een belangrijke regel bij de montage van de film: omdat ze geen menselijke aanwezigheid kon terugvinden waar ze zich echt toe kan verhouden, presenteert Syed in de film enkel beelden zonder mensen.

The objects and places we cannot leave behind create the tapestry that is Points of Departure. Exploring themes of personal and collective memory through Syed’s relationship to the city of Glasgow, a voiceover describes a tablecloth she retrieved whilst clearing her elderly father’s house. The film attempts to unravel the threads of memory held within this mundane item and to find an image within the BBC archive that relates to her memories of growing up in Glasgow. Syed’s father’s unrehearsed attempts to translate an Urdu Ghazal discovered in the archive, a poetic expression of the beauty of love and the pain of loss, expose a process of translation that becomes the key allowing a path through the labyrinth of both her own memory and the BBC archive.

Points of Departure fractures the normative culturally dominant view of Glasgow’s cityscapes and re-inserts a Scottish-Asian presence.

After an unsuccessful search through the BBC archive for footage that Syed could relate to as a mixed race child growing up in Scotland, she formulated a set of rules governing how she would edit the footage: she could not find a human presence she could relate to, so she would only present footage where there was no human presence.

In Falha (Failure) kan het publiek zelf de ruimte hervormen: door het herpositioneren van houten panelen worden nieuwe paden, doorgangen of obstakels gecreëerd. De installatie bestaat uit een draagbare, opplooibare vloer die geopend kan worden en in of over bestaande ruimtes worden gelegd. Het is een monument dat niet statisch of rechtopstaand is. Het is flexibel, adaptabel en onstabiel als een bewegende bodem. Vanuit de vlakke ondergrond kunnen hoeken, muren of volumes worden opgericht die de functie van de vloer herkwalificeren en de configuratie van de ruimte aanpassen als in een mobiele architectuur. Ondanks het feit dat Falha een interactieve structuur is, is het geen speeltuig. De ruimte-indeling aanpassen vraagt denkwerk en fysieke kracht, misschien ook wat hulp van anderen.

Renata Lucas manipuleert publieke ruimtes en architectuur om de spanning tussen binnen en buiten, publiek en privaat, heden en verleden te intensifiëren. Haar praktijk is een kritische interpretatie van de wijze waarop onze gebouwde omgevingen onze daden, gedrag en sociale relaties determineren. Lucas bevraagt de afhankelijkheid van een maatschappij aan voorgeschreven definities van ruimte, eigendom en orde. Haar werk is een verbeelding van een ruimte waar die barrières worden doorbroken en waar de deconstructie van die grenzen kan resulteren in een andere sociale dynamiek. Door het aanbieden van een alternatieve ruimtelijke verbeelding – die aandacht heeft voor aanpasbaarheid en spel – creëert Lucas de mogelijkheid van een nieuw subjectief en collectief engagement in onze omgeving.

In Falha (Failure), the audience can reshape the space and create new paths, passages or obstacles by repositioning wooden panels.

The installation consists of an articulated, portable, foldable wooden floor that can be opened and extended onto another area. It is a monument that does not stand still or upright, but is on the contrary flexible, adaptable, and unstable, like a moving ground. From the flat surface it is possible to erect corners, walls and volumes that not only requalify the function of the floor, but also change the configuration of the space, like a mobile architecture. Despite being an interactive structure, Falha is not a plaything. Changing its arrangement requires reasoning and some physical strength, and perhaps someone’s help.

Renata Lucas manipulates urban spaces and architecture to intensify the tension between inside and outside, public and private, past and present. Her practice is a critical interpretation of how our built environment determines actions, behaviour and social relationships, and by extension society’s dependency on the preservation of prescribed definitions of space, property and order. The artist’s work imagines a space where these barriers break down, where the possibility of deconstructing boundaries might result in a different social dynamic.

By offering an alternative spatial imagination – one that brings into consideration malleability, manipulation and play – Lucas provokes the possibility of new subjective and collective engagement within our built environment. (Redcat/CalArts)

Every time I make a ‘Distance Drawing’, I see more clearly the relationship of my body with these works. Time has always been an element that defines these drawings, not only because their final shape depends on the days I have to draw, but also because of their time /space relationship. Now it is more evident, I have been doing these works for almost 16 years. If I combine all the drawings, I have already made a long stretch.

Het leven op een eiland maakt iemand sterk bewust van territoriale beperkingen. Tony Cruz Pabón tekent afmetingen en afstanden.

Deze tekeningen maakt hij doorgaans niet op papier maar op muren en andere dragers. Zijn Distance Drawings (2003 - heden) zijn onafgewerkte muurtekeningen gemaakt met potlood, houtskool of krijt die trachten de kilometers tussen verschillende plaatsen te traceren, doorgaans de afstand die de kunstenaar aflegde van zijn huis in San Juan, Puerto Rico tot de plaats waar hij tentoonstelt. Deze pogingen om die afstanden te tekenen falen bijna altijd door de onmogelijkheid om de reizen in hun totaliteit te visualiseren. De sporen van deze onbereikbare onderneming blijven achter als het kunstwerk.

Living on an island makes one acutely aware of territorial limits.

Tony Cruz Pabón draws measurements and distances. Generally, these drawings do not happen on paper, but on walls and other surfaces. His Distance Drawings (2003 - present) are unfinished wall drawings made with pencil, carbon or chalk that try to trace the miles separating one place from another, most often the distance travelled from his home in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to the place where he is exhibiting. The attempt to draw these distances almost always ends in failure, due to the impossibility of visualising such a journey in its totality; the traces of the artist’s unattainable endeavour remain on the wall as the work of art.

Cruz Pabón has completed many of these drawings, including attempts to record the distances between San Juan and Vilnius (8,433 km) (2003), San Juan and Cuenca (2,762 km) (2004), San Juan and his parents’ house in Vega Alta (87 km, completed) (2004), the distance between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (420 km) (2008), and the distance from San Juan to London (6,751 km) (2011) and San Juan to Berlin (7,681 km) (2018). Christoph Fink presenteert een geluidscompositie opgebouwd uit soundscapes en een breed vooropgenomen instrumentarium. De ruimte of architectuur wordt een instrument resonerend op gespatialiseerde geluidsbewegingen. Het beeldend werk van Fink kan men beschouwen als een grote, dynamische en steeds evoluerende partituur. Het rollende klanktapijt Earth Piece/Song for STUK inner court is hiervan een mogelijke manifestatie. Naast dit geluidswerk presenteert Fink in de expozaal een klein beeldend werk vanuit een verlangen naar een contrapunt, een backbeat tegenover de sonore monumentaliteit die buiten te horen is.

Fink liet zijn concept Atlas der Bewegingen ontstaan vanuit het oplijsten van zijn reismateriaal: gedetailleerde chrono-geografische notities, foto- en geluidsopnames, ‘nuchtere’ observaties van zijn reizen, het snelschetsen van dynamische ‘stillevens’ (vluchten, fiets- en wandelreizen) en hun verwerking in structurerende beelden. Vanuit die initiële structuur, die meerstemmige en aanhoudende drone van reisnotities, worden andere ruimtetijdstructuren of contexten verknoopt: filosofische, muzikale en historische verhalen die alles contextualiseren.

Het concept van deze Atlas is ondertussen de dragende titel van het hele oeuvre; de mogelijkheden en limieten van het individuele menselijke lichaam ingebed in de totaliteit der dingen.

Christoph Fink presents a composition of sound, made of different soundscapes and a large pre-recorded instrumentarium. The architecture becomes the instrument itself for the soundwaves traveling through the space. Fink’s visual art practice can be considered as one large, dynamic and ever-evolving score. Earth Piece/Song for STUK inner court is one of its possible manifestations. In the expozaal, Fink also presents a small visual artwork, which functions as a counterpoint, a backbeat in response to the sonorous monumentality to be experienced outside.

Fink’s concept Atlas of Movements initially grew out of enlisted travel materials: detailed chronogeographic notes, photos and sound recordings, ‘sober’ observations of his travels that largely deal with the sketches of dynamic ‘still lifes’ (flights, bike travel, hikes) and their processing in structuring images. From this initial structure, this polyphonic and continuous drone of travel notes, other space-time-structures or contexts, are born: philosophical, musical and historical stories that contextualise everything. The concept of this Atlas has become the bearing title for the entire oeuvre of Fink: the possibilities and limits of the individual human being embedded in the totality of things.

De installatie Shifting Axis bestaat uit een stalen pendulum en een cirkel fijn zilverzand. De beweging van de slinger wordt deels beïnvloed door de rotatie van de aarde en deels door een mechanisch systeem dat soms de koers van de slinger in een chaotisch patroon verandert.

Het werk is een variatie op en verwijst naar de Slinger van Foucault, genoemd naar de Franse fysicus Jean Foucault die in 1851 als eerste een pendulum gebruikte om de rotatie van de aarde aan te tonen. Het was de eerste keer dat men erin slaagde om met laboratoriummaterialen, eerder dan via sterrenkundige observaties, de beweging van de aarde te demonstreren.

De bezwerende beweging van de slinger in Shifting Axis tekent een steeds veranderend patroon. De metalen punt die door het zand beweegt zorgt voor een intrigerend geluid dat bijdraagt tot het zacht hypnotiserend effect van het werk.

Shifting Axis consists of a steel pendulum and a circular pile of fine silver sand. The trajectory of the pendulum is partly influenced by the rotation of the earth and partly manipulated by a mechanical system that influences the course of the pendulum into a chaotic pattern.

This work is an alteration of the Foucault Pendulum, named after the French physicist Jean Foucault who first used the pendulum in 1851 to demonstrate the rotation of the earth. It was the first satisfactory demonstration of the earth’s rotation using laboratory apparatus rather than astronomical observations.

The mesmerising movement creates a forever-changing pattern. The metal point of the pendulum moving in the sand creates a captivating sound that enhances the almost hypnotic effects on its viewers.

Aarde, stenen, zand, hout, bakstenen … alles wat economisch niet van waarde was, werd in het verleden gebruikt als ballast om handelsschepen te stabiliseren. Bij aankomst in de haven werd deze vracht samen met onbedoeld meegereisd organisch materiaal zoals zaden, uitgeladen. Het grootschalige onderzoeksproject van Maria Thereza Alves, Seeds of Change, zoekt op oude ballastsites naar flora in grote havensteden zoals Marseille, Reposaari, Duinkerke, Exeter, Liverpool, Bristol, Antwerpen en New York.

Die zaden kunnen ontkiemen en groeien. Ze worden zo stille getuigen van een verhaal over wereldwijde handel dat vaak complexer is dan de gekende geschiedenis voorschrijft. Hoewel ze de mogelijkheid hebben om onze notie van identiteit als het behoren tot een bepaalde bioregio te veranderen, wordt het historisch belang van die zaden zelden erkend. Seeds of Change wil daarom het discours van geografische en natuurlijke ‘origine’ bevragen: Op welk moment worden zaden ‘inheems’? Wat zijn de socio-politieke geschiedenissen die het kader van ‘oorspronkelijkheid’ en ‘toebehoren’ bepalen?

De botanist Dr. Heli Jutila schrijft: ‘Hoewel de zaden dood lijken, zijn ze in feite levend en kunnen ze tientallen en zelfs honderden jaren levensvatbaar blijven.’ Sommige zaden hebben al gebloeid, andere kunnen in de juiste omstandigheden nog steeds ontkiemen.

Als onderdeel van Seeds of Change, creëert Maria Thereza Alves Ballast Gardens; tuinen aangelegd met zaden uit ballast. Deze werden reeds aangelegd in Bristol en op verschillende plaatsen in New York. In de context van Parallel Crossings wordt in de lente/zomer van 2019 een Ballast Garden gecreëerd aan de Vaartkom in Leuven die inspeelt op de geschiedenis van de Antwerpse haven.

Earth, stones, sand, wood, bricks and whatever else was economically expedient was used as ballast to stabilise merchant sailing ships according to the weight of the cargo. Upon arrival in a port, the ballast was unloaded, carrying with it seeds native to the area where the ballast had been picked up. Seeds of Change unearths historical ballast sites and ballast flora. It is an ongoing investigation of ballast flora in the port cities of Europe and has been developed for Marseille, Reposaari, Dunkirk, Exeter, Liverpool, Bristol, Antwerp and most recently New York.

Seeds contained in ballast may germinate and grow, potentially exposing a far more complex narrative of world history than is usually presented by orthodox accounts. Although they have the potential to alter our notions of the identity of place as belonging to a defined bioregion, the historical importance of these seeds is rarely acknowledged.

Seeds of Change is, therefore, designed to question those discourses that define the geographical and ‘natural’ history of a place: at what moment do seeds become ‘native’? What are the socio-political histories of a place that determine the framework of belonging?

The botanist Dr. Heli Jutila writes: ‘Although seeds seem to be dead, they are in fact alive and can remain vital in soil for decades and even hundreds of years in a state of dormancy.’ Some of these seeds have already germinated; others, given the right conditions, still retain the potential to germinate.

An integral part of Seeds of Change is the creation of Ballast Gardens; gardens planted with ballast flora. These have been made in Bristol and in various venues in New York. In the context of Parallel Crossings, a Ballast Garden will be created in the Spring/Summer of 2019 at the Vaartkom in Leuven, relating to the histories of the Port of Antwerp.

Migrant Journal is een magazine in zes delen dat de wereldwijde circulatie van mensen, goederen, informatie, fauna en flora onderzoekt en verkent en welke transformatieve impact ze hebben op het hedendaagse leven. Terwijl migratie inherent deel uitmaakt van het ontstaan van de mensheid, lijkt het vandaag alomtegenwoordig, sneller en complexer.

Toenemende bevolkingsstromen bevragen concepten als identiteit, burgerschap en het behoren tot een groep/gemeenschap/streek. Maar migratie gaat over meer dan individuen. Van de invloed van routes van de Afrikaanse slavenhandel tot het meereizen van zaden op de wind of in de schoenen van een handelaar: er zijn meer verdoken, verrassende en ingewikkelde facetten aan migratie waarvan de pertinentie op zijn minst gelijk is aan de menselijke bewegingen. Naast zaden, bacteriën, goederen, dieren en mensen, vormen de ongrijpbare bewegingen van data, ideeën en informatie een nieuwe ruimtelijke uitdaging om te bevatten. In het tijdperk van ‘Big Data’ worden we geconfronteerd met complexe vragen rond ‘dematerialisatie.’ Migratie creëert nieuwe ruimtes die Migrant Journal wil verkennen.

Migrant Journal is a six-issue journal exploring the circulation of people, goods, information, and even fauna and flora around the world and the transformative impact this has on contemporary life.

While migration is part of humanity’s genesis, it seems the phenomenon has now become truly ubiquitous, with increasing speeds and complex ramifications.

Rising fluxes of population question concepts of identity, citizenship and belonging. However, migration involves far more than just individuals. From the influence of African slave-trade routes on the centenary traditional Portuguese carolino rice, to the travel of seeds carried by the winds or trapped under the boots of a merchant, there are more intricate facets of migration whose pertinence is equal to human fluxes.

Besides seeds, bacteria, goods, animals and people, impalpable flows of data, ideas and information now constitute a new spatial challenge to understand. Migration is creating new spaces that Migrant Journal wants to explore.

For Parallel Crossings, Migrant Journal makes a spatial presentation of the first five issues of the publication. Kiluanji Kia Henda’s foto’s registreren futuristische architectuur in Luanda, de hoofdstad van Angola. Maar Kia Henda wiens vroegere werk zich situeerde in de traditie van de documentairefotografie in het zuiden van Afrika, herinterpreteert deze postkoloniale gebouwen als ‘bewijs’ voor de eerste Afrikaanse reis naar de zon. Vuurwerk boven een voetbalstadion wordt het verblindende licht van ontstekende ruimteraketten, het onafgewerkte mausoleum voor Agostinho Neto, de leider van de onafhankelijkheidsbeweging en eerste president van Angola van 1975 tot 1979, wordt een ruimtetuig, en een verlaten brutalistische bioscoop wordt een ruimteobservatorium. Het mausoleum (de verblijfplaats van Neto’s lichaam, dat geprepareerd werd door experten van het Lenin Mausoleum in Moskou) refereert rechtstreeks aan de ‘Space Race’ tussen de grote wereldmachten tijdens de Koude Oorlog.

Na Angola’s onafhankelijkheid werd de voormalig Portugese kolonie gesteund door de Sovjet-Unie. Kia Henda’s Icarus 13 suggereert dat Angola zich de Sovjetkosmosutopie eigen maakte maar wel met een duistere ondertoon. De snelle opkomst van het land in het kielzog van de recente olie ‘boom’, zou het inderdaad tot dicht bij de zon kunnen leiden. Misschien te dicht en zo uiteindelijk de val veroorzaken. (Inke Arns)

Kiluanji Kia Henda’s photographs record futuristic architecture in the Angolan capital Luanda. But Kia Henda, whose early work stood in the long tradition of southern African documentary photography, reinterprets these postcolonial buildings as ‘evidence’ for the first African journey to the sun. Fireworks over a football stadium become the dazzling light of igniting rockets; the unfinished mausoleum of Agostinho Neto, the leader of the independence movement and first Angolan president from 1975 to 1979, becomes a spacecraft; and a derelict Brutalist cinema becomes a space observatory. The mausoleum (which holds Neto’s corpse, prepared by experts from Moscow’s Lenin Mausoleum) refers directly to the Space Race between world powers during the Cold War. After gaining independence the former Portuguese colony was supported by the Soviet Union. Kia Henda’s Icarus 13 suggests that Angola has interiorised the Soviet cosmos utopia – albeit with a dark undertone. Indeed, the country’s meteoric rise in the wake of the recent oil boom might lead it too close to the sun and end up causing its downfall. (Inke Arns)

De film Enceindre is de eerste samenwerking tussen filmmaker Luke Fowler en de geprezen geluidskunstenaar Chris Watson. Enceindre is een studie in film en geluid van twee 16de eeuwse versterkte steden: Berwick in het Noord-Oosten van Engeland en Pamplona in de Navarra-regio in het Noorden van Spanje.

De film capteert de bredere psychologische en sociale resonanties van wat het betekent om in een stad te leven die gedefinieerd wordt door haar historisch complex aan verdedigingsmuren en bastions. Enceindre hanteert naar eigen zeggen een ‘infra-sensitieve’ aanpak; het laat zich leiden door onopgemerkte akoestische perspectieven en verhelderend camerawerk om een nieuw kader aan te bieden waarin men kan nadenken over die anachronistische structuren in Berwick en Pamplona.

Als het woord ‘Enceinte’ – belangrijkste omheining van een fort ter verdediging – synoniem is voor ‘het lichaam van een plaats’ – wat betekent het dan om te leven in een lichaam dat buiten de tijd staat en geen doel heeft? Zouden die plaatsen dan Heterotopieën kunnen zijn? Of zijn ze – zoals WG Sebald beschrijft – buitenaardse structuren ontdaan van een menselijke geschiedenis?

The first collaboration between filmmaker Luke Fowler and acclaimed sound recordist Chris Watson, Enceindre is a study in film and sound of two 16th-century fortified cities: Berwick in the North-East of England and Pamplona in the Navarre region of the North of Spain.

The film considers the wider psychological and social resonances of what it means to live within a town defined by its historical complex of defensive walls and bastions. By adopting an ‘infra-sensitive’ approach to place, Enceindre draws on overlooked acoustic perspectives and lucid camerawork to propose a new framework in which to consider these anachronistic structures.

If the word Enceinte (meaning the ‘main defensive enclosure of a fortification’) is synonymous with ‘the body of the place’, what does it mean to live within a body that is outside of time and without purpose?

Could these places be considered Heterotopias? Or are they – as WG Sebald describes – alien structures denuded from human history?

Terwijl hij zich verdiepte in de geschiedenis van de Belgische militaire interventie na de onafhankelijkheid van Congo, raakte Sven Augustijnen geïnteresseerd in de stad Kamina. Dankzij enkele ontmoetingen naar aanleiding van Augustijnens film Spectres kwam hij op het spoor van een nationale vestiging of ‘réduit national’ die België tijdens de jaren vijftig in Katanga plande. Het ontbreken van duidelijke gegevens over het onderwerp, net als zijn belangstelling voor alles wat direct of indirect verband houdt met het communistische spook dat door het naoorlogse Europa waarde, wekte Augustijnens belangstelling. Al gauw resulteert het vooronderzoek in de ontdekking van een archieffonds in het Centrum voor Historische Documentatie van de Krijgsmacht, waar informatie te vinden is over dat vestigingsproject.

Augustijnen begon vervolgens aan de enorme opdracht van het documenteren en analyseren van duizenden foto’s, negatieven, tekeningen en verschillende plannen. Tot op heden verlieten die documenten het archiefcentrum nooit en ze werden niet eerder bestudeerd.

Dankzij een nauwe samenwerking met een van de archivarissen kon Augustijnen de plannen voor dat verbazingwekkende Belgische project onder de aandacht brengen: de ontwikkeling van een militaire basis en van een regeringsstad die als toevluchtsoord zou dienen in Kamina in geval van een externe dreiging.

Le Réduit traceert de geschiedenis van de Kaminabasis.

Aanvankelijk lijkt het een architecturale en stedenbouwkundige materialisatie te zijn van de angst voor een Sovjetinvasie in Europa, maar vervolgens vervult ze een strategische rol als antwoord op de politieke omwentelingen die Congo na de onafhankelijkheid verder zouden destabiliseren. (La Loge)

As he plunged into the history of Belgium’s military intervention in the Congo following the country’s declaration of independence in 1960, Sven Augustijnen found his attention and interest drawn to the city of Kamina. While working on his film Spectres, Augustijnen encountered a number of people who put him on the trail of a national redoubt Belgium had planned to build in the province of Katanga in the 1950s.

His curiosity was stimulated by the absence of clear information and data on the topic, and by his long-standing interest in anything that has to do, whether directly or remotely, with the communist spectre that haunted Europe in the post-war years. Some preliminary research resulted in the discovery of an archive fund, at Belgium’s Centre de Documentation historique des Forces armées, which contained information linked to the national redoubt project.

Augustijnen then set out on the massive task of documenting and analysing thousands of photographs, negatives, carbon copies and various plans. These documents had never left the archive or been studied by anyone. Thanks to the complicity of one of the archivists, Augustijnen was able to exhume the plans for a project of stunning proportions undertaken by the Belgian government: to develop a military base and a governmental city, to serve as refuge, in the city of Kamina.

Le Réduit retraces the history of the Kamina Base, which at first appeared as an architectural and urban materialisation of the fear of a Soviet invasion, but which would go on to play a strategic role during political upheavals that destabilised Congo in the months and years that followed the declaration of independence. N Muzikanten laten zich graag inspireren door verre reizen, regionale muziektradities of plaatsgebonden instrumenten en plaatsen die vervolgens in een andere context. Zo improviseert de Zweedse componist Ellen Arkbro met historische orgels overal ter wereld en onderzoekt ze de unieke sonoriteit van oude stemmingen. Speciaal voor Artefact brengt ze een nieuwe compositie voor het zeventiende-eeuwse middentoonsorgel van de Begijnhofkerk.

Avant-Joik is een samenwerking tussen de Noorse componist en vocalist Maja Ratkje, één van Europa’s meest gerespecteerde avant-gardemuzikanten en de Zweedse joik-zangeres Katarina Barruk. Joik wordt beschouwd als één van de oudste, nog bestaande zangstijlen in Europa.

Ten slotte neemt het duo Gamelan Voices (ex. Nid & Sancy) het publiek mee op een bezwerende trip tussen Indonesische gamelanklanken en elektronische soundscapes.

E Musicians like being inspired by far travels, regional musical traditions or local instruments, and then placing those in new contexts. Swedish composer Ellen Arkbro improvises with historic organs all over the world, investigating the unique sonority of old tunings. Exclusively for Artefact, she will perform a new composition for the unique 17th century mid-tone organ of the Beguinage Church.

Avant-Joik is a collaboration of Norvegian composer and vocalist Maja Ratkje, one of Europe’s most respected avant-garde musicians, and Swedish joik singer Katarina Barruk.

Joik is considered one of the oldest existing vocal styles in Europe. To conclude the night, Gamelan Voices (the new project of Nid & Sancy) takes you on an exhilarating trip between Indonesian gamelan sounds and electronic soundscapes.

ARTEFACT NIGHT MOSES BOYD SOLO X, CHARLOTTE ADIGÉRY & MORE N Het concertprogramma focust op de metropool Londen als muzikale broedplaats voor hybride acts die gevoed zijn door migratie, mobiliteit en uitwisseling. Zo brengt drummer Moses Boyd met zijn project Moses Boyd Solo X elementen van UK bass en flashy grime samen met jazz-rock, improvisatie en Afrikaanse ritmes – niet voor niets wordt hij op handen gedragen door Four Tet en Floating Points. Ook de muziek van saxofonist Ben Vince is niet in hokjes te vatten: met zijn saxofoon bouwt hij melodieën, texturen en ritmes op die schipperen tussen ambient en de dansvloer. Woordkunstenaar, saxofonist en fulltimedromer Alabaster dePlume brengt – in volle brexitomwentelingen – een ode aan positivisme en diversiteit met zijn onvergetelijke live shows vol humor, absurdisme en heerlijke melodieën.

ClubSTUK opent met een live AV-show van WWWater-frontvrouw Charlotte Adigéry, die haar nieuwe album Zandoli uitbrengt op 8 februari op het DEEWEE-label van Soulwax.

In haar eerste single Paténipat scandeert ze Creoolse lyrics op een repetitieve trein van Caribische percussie en futuristische accenten. E The concerts focus on London as a musical breeding ground for hybrid acts fed by migration, mobility and exchange. One of the key figures in the scene is drummer Moses Boyd, whose project Moses Boyd Solo X brings together UK bass, flashy grime, jazz-rock, impro and African rhythms – no wonder Four Tet and Floating Points are fans. Just like Boyd’s, sax player Ben Vince’s music is hard to pigeonhole. Using only his saxophone, he builds up melodies, textures and rhythms that hover between ambient and dancefloor. In the midst of the Brexit bonanza, word artist, sax player and full-time dreamer Alabaster dePlume brings an ode to positivism and diversity with his unforgettable live shows filled with humour, absurdism and delightful melodies.

ClubSTUK opens with a live AV show by WWWater’s Charlotte Adigéry, whose new album Zandoli is released by the Soulwax label DEEWEE on February 8. On her first single Paténipat, she declaims Creole lyrics on a repetitive train of Caribbean percussion and futuristic accents. The inimitable DJ Marcelle is known for her DIY-approach and eclectic threedeck dj sets, melting together the most diverse styles and sounds from her collection of over 20.000 tracks.

Closing act will be local hero Bjeor.

ARTEFACT AUDIOSTORIES STUK & HET NIEUWSTEDELIJK N STUK en Het nieuwstedelijk slaan de handen in elkaar voor een zondagse luisternamiddag waarin audio, radio en geluidskunst elkaar raken (en versterken). Mediakunstenaar Stefaan Quix en zijn acht percussionisten (‘het quixtet’) brengen op minimalistische wijze het verhaal van het ontstaan van (muzikale) communicatie. Het publiek, dat centraal zit met de muzikanten rondom, wordt getrakteerd op een ruimtelijk spel van ritme, harmonie en stem. Collectief SCHIK-lid Siona Houthuys en Berten Vanderbruggen duiken dan weer in het niemandsland tussen theater en audiokunst met No Coincidence, No Story, een voorstelling over toeval waarvoor ze vorig jaar van Het nieuwstedelijk een ‘wildcard’ kregen. Rudy Trouvé en Gunter Nagels nemen je mee op een parlando-reis langs de beat poets en verlaten highways. Ook Musarc, het meest avontuurlijke koor van Groot-Brittannië, tekent present. Musarc brengt de Belgische première van Lin Chiwei’s Tape Music, met een meterslange partituur die op ritmische wijze wordt doorgegeven onder de koorleden en een nieuwe creatie van Greta Eacott op het STUK Binnenplein. Ten slotte zet de Klankverbond Audio Award een verdienstelijke persoonlijkheid uit het audiolandschap in de bloemetjes.

E STUK and Het nieuwstedelijk join forces for a Sunday afternoon of listening, focusing on audio, radio and sound art and how those disciplines interact and enhance each other.

Media artist Stefaan Quix and eight percussionists (the ‘quixtet’) bring a minimalist story of the origin of (musical) communication. The audience, seated in the middle, surrounded by the musicians, is treated to a spatial play of rhythm, harmony and voice.

N Iedere tijd heeft zijn wereldwonderen: een idee van het onmogelijke, dat dan toch gebouwd wordt, groter en indrukwekkender dan wat we al kenden. Die architecturale en artistieke krachttoeren markeren de overwinning van de mens op zijn fysieke beperkingen en de wetten van de natuur. Maar hoe wonderlijk blijft het kleine, menselijke lichaam dat al het grootse bedenkt en vormgeeft? Hoe oneindig veel mysterieuzer en mooier dan de reuzen waarmee we ons omringen? De voorstelling 7 vormt het sluitstuk van een trilogie waarin de Marokkaanse danser-choreograaf Radouan Mriziga de verhouding tussen architectuur en het lichaam centraal stelt. Mriziga verbindt de schoonheid van het bewegende lichaam met de scheppende kracht van architectuur en sculptuur. De bewegingen zijn geometrisch accuraat en bijzonder geraffineerd. Een expeditie op zoek naar het ultieme wereldwonder: het menselijk lichaam.

Zo concreet en franjeloos de choreografie, zo rijk zijn de ideeën en de zoektocht naar verbinding die eronder sluimeren.

VALESKA GRISEBACH WESTERN N Zelden evoceerde een film op zo een indringende manier de contouren en uitdagingen van het hedendaagse Europa. Voor Western ging Grisebach uitgebreid op zoek naar gepaste locaties en een non-professionele cast. In Petrelik (Zuid-Bulgarije) vond ze de geschikte plek om het ‘Wilde Oosten’ te verzinnebeelden en een eigen invulling te geven aan het westerngenre. Geïnspireerd op de ambivalente heldenfiguren in klassieke genre-oefeningen zoals Anthony Mann’s Winchester ’73, worden de duellerende neocowboys in Western belichaamd door een groep Duitse bouwvakkers die bij hun confrontatie met het vreemde weifelen tussen nieuwsgierigheid en paranoia, tussen een verlangen naar samenhorigheid en een angst voor het onbekende. Zo raakt Grisebachs zelfbenoemde ‘dans met de western’ aan een aantal kwesties die vandaag centraal staan in het Europese debat, waaronder ook de ‘gold-rush’ naar het Oosten, een thema dat ook zindert doorheen een andere film uit de zogenaamde Berliner Schule: Maren Ades Toni Erdmann, waaraan Grisebach niet toevallig meewerkte als scriptconsulent. i.s.m. E Rarely has a film evoked the contours and challenges of today’s Europe so poignantly. For Western, Grisebach researched extensively for suitable locations and a nonprofessional cast. Petrelik (Southern Bulgaria) symbolizes the myth of the ‘Wild East’ and is the perfect place for her own interpretation of the western genre. Inspired by the ambivalent heroic figures in classical genre practices such as Anthony Mann’s Winchester ’73, the duelling neo-cowboys in Western are embodied by a group of German construction workers who, in their confrontation with the foreign, waver between curiosity and paranoia, between a desire towards communality and a fear of the unknown. That’s how Grisebach’s self-proclaimed ‘dance with the western’ touches on a number of issues that are central to the European debate today, including the ‘gold rush’ to the East, a theme that also resonates throughout another film from the so-called Berliner Schule: Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann, on which it’s no coincidence that Grisebach collaborated as a script consultant.

N Alia Syed is een experimentele filmmaker en beeldend kunstenaar die woont en werkt in Londen en Glasgow. In Parallel Crossings presenteert ze haar prachtige film Points of Departure. Deze film maakt gebruik van beelden uit de BBCarchieven en brengt een collectief verleden samen met persoonlijke herinneringen om de normatieve en cultureel dominante beeldvorming van Glasgows stadslandschap te doorbreken en te injecteren met een Schots-Aziatische aanwezigheid. Het onderzoekende werk van Syed exploreert de rol van taal in communicatie tussen verschillende culturen, met een focus op grenzen en begrenzingen, vertalingen en trans-culturele identiteit. Alia Syed zal spreken over haar werk aan de hand van enkele fragmenten uit haar films.

JOHAN WETS — ON THE MOVE De mens als bewegend wezen en migratie doorheen de eeuwen N Migratie is een eigenschap van de menselijke soort. Mensen hebben steeds gemigreerd: naar andere gebieden, andere regio’s en zelfs andere continenten. Menselijke migratie heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de wereld er uitziet zoals ze vandaag is. Het is een geduchte kracht die nieuwe samenlevingen vormgeeft.

Duizend jaar geleden woonde er geen Turk in Istanbul (toen nog Byzantium) en hadden de Denen het voor het zeggen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Tot iets meer dan 500 jaar geleden woonde enkel de inheemse bevolking in wat nu de Verenigde Staten van Amerika zijn en was Spanje nog deels islamitisch. Migratie is een kracht die vormgeeft aan staten en samenlevingen en die daarom in de huidige maatschappij als bedreigend gezien wordt. Waar migratie voor sommigen beangstigend is, is het voor anderen een bron van inspiratie. Johan Wets gaat in zijn lezing in op de dynamiek van de menselijke migratie en hoe die de samenleving verder vorm zal blijven geven.

E Migration is inherent to the human species. People have always moved to other areas, regions and even continents. Human migration has made the world into what it is today.

It is a powerful force that shapes new societies. A thousand years ago, not a single Turk was living in Istanbul (then called Byzantium) and the Danish were in power in the United Kingdom. A bit more than 500 years ago, only native populations lived in what is now the United States of America, and Spain was largely Islamic. Migration is a power that shapes states and societies and it is therefore often considered as threatening.

For some, migration is frightening, for others, it is a source of inspiration.

In his lecture, Johan Wets addresses the dynamics of human migration and how they will continue to shape society in the future.
