Amanda Gorman veroverde bij de eedaflegging van president Joe Biden vele harten met haar gedicht ‘The hill we climb’. Ze gaf mensen weer een gevoel van hoop, een gevoel van zingeving. Met haar poëtische boodschap zette ze empathie terug op de politieke agenda, iets wat de voorbije vier jaar afwezig was tijdens het bestuur van een president die resoluut weigerde het perspectief van de ander te begrijpen.

Het onderwerp voor deze editie van Artefact 2021 komt voort uit een fascinatie voor het begrip ‘empathie’, en wat het kan betekenen in onze huidige samenleving. De titel, Wired for Empathy, verwijst naar relatief recente ontwikkelingen binnen de biologie, neurowetenschappen en psychologie die stellen dat we als mensen uitzonderlijk goed uitgerust zijn om als empathische wezens door het leven te gaan. In tegenstelling tot wat we altijd geloofden, steunt het succes van onze soort niet op noties van competitie en ‘survival of the fittest’*, maar juist op ons vermogen om samen te werken. Niet ellebogenwerk, maar collectieve inspanningen zorgen ervoor dat we onze doelen bereiken. Toch lijken meer en meer stemmen te spreken over een ware empathie-crisis. In zijn boek The War for Kindness verwoordt Jamil Zaki het als volgt: ‘Being a psychologist studying empathy today is like being a climatologist studying the polar ice: Each year we discover more about how valuable it is, just as it recedes all around us.’

Welke rol is er dan weggelegd voor empathie in onze huidige samenleving? Wie mag een ander aanspreken op zijn/haar empathisch vermogen en wat zegt dat over onze huidige machtsrelaties? Welke ontwikkelingen in de samenleving ondermijnen, of stimuleren ons empathisch vermogen? Kunnen we dit vermogen oefenen? En is empathie voorbehouden tot mens-mens relaties of kunnen we het uitbreiden om alle levende wezens te omvatten?

Deze tentoonstelling onderzoekt hoe empathie op zowel een persoonlijk als politiek niveau functioneert; ze belicht de intieme dimensie van empathie terwijl ze ook focust op empathie als een collectief gegeven, als iets dat ontstaat tussen verschillende groepen. Ze gaat dieper in op onze grenzen van empathie en op de vraag of er ook zoiets bestaat als een teveel aan empathie. Zo ja, wie bepaalt dan waar de grens ligt? De tentoonstelling kijkt naar onze ‘circles of care’, naar begrippen van inclusie en exclusie. Ze kijkt niet alleen naar de mens, maar naar alle levende wezens. Ze werpt een blik op het heden, en op de toekomst.

In sommige kringen leidt een soort politieke correctheid tot de vraag of het nog wel gepast is om in de huid van de ander te kruipen, het perspectief van de ander te proberen begrijpen. Moet het gezien worden als een vorm van misplaatste toe-eigening, als een kwetsende daad waarin iemand een geschiedenis en identiteit overneemt, die niet de zijne/hare is?

Ik geloof dat als we ophouden met proberen, polarisatie wint. En dat het perspectief van de ander proberen begrijpen, niet hetzelfde is als het toe-eigenen of opeisen van diens narratief. Ook hier volg ik Amanda Gorman wanneer ze zegt: ‘if we’re to live up to our own time, then victory won’t lie in the blade, but in all the bridges we’ve made.’

Amanda Gorman captured the heart of many around the globe as she recited her poem at the inauguration speech of Joe Biden on January 20, 2021. She reinstated a sense of hope, a sense of purpose. She put empathy back on the political agenda, where it had fallen off during the previous President’s reign who had made a point of not trying to understand the perspective of the other.

The exhibition to which this is the introductory text originated from a fascination with the concept of empathy and how we understand it in today’s society. Its title, Wired for Empathy, hints at the relatively recent developments within neuroscience, biology and psychology which state that we as human beings are exceptionally well equipped to behave empathically. In contrast to what we have been led to believe about human nature being about competition and survival of the fittest*, our human species have so far been rather successful on this planet not because of competition, but because of collaboration. Not becauses of elbow work, but because of collectively working towards a goal. Yet, at the same time, a widespread perceived lack of empathy has caused people to speak of an empathy crisis. As Jamil Zaki puts it in his book The War for Kindness: ‘Being a psychologist studying empathy today is like being a climatologist studying the polar ice: Each year we discover more about how valuable it is, just as it recedes all around us.’

What role then does empathy play in today’s society? Who asks empathy from whom and what does that say about contemporary power relations?

Which evolutions within society strengthen or undermine our capacity for empathy? How can we relearn/train empathetic strategies and behaviors? And, is the concept of empathy limited to human relations, or can we expand the notion to involve relations to other living creatures?

This exhibition explores empathy both on a personal as well as on a political level, it looks at the intimate workings while understanding its function for a collective. It looks at its limitations and the question of whether there can be too much empathy. If so, who decides what is too much? It looks at circles of care, at matters of inclusion versus exclusion.

It looks beyond the human being, at all living creatures. It looks beyond our current times, at the future.

In many circles at this moment, a certain political correctness has led to the question whether it is even appropriate to try to understand the perspective of the other, or does trying and expressing the attempt in

itself, is an improper appropriation, a violent act to acquire a history and identity that is not yours?

I believe that if we stop trying, polarisation wins. That trying to understand, is not the same as acquiring or claiming authority over a narrative.

Also here, I listen to Amanda Gorman when she says: ‘if we’re to live up to our own time, then victory won’t lie in the blade, but in all the bridges we’ve made.’

I thought to somehow move the two figures of Maurice Harron’s 25 year old ‘Hands Across the Divide’ iconic sculpture, that is centrally located on the bridge between Catholic and Protestant areas, a few centimeters towards each other. (…) my hope is that a new perspective on a persistent challenge may emerge, and that the city may begin to cultivate their space mutually, recognizing that the place of reconciliation is all around them, just waiting to be grasped …

Materialised Distance is een keramische sculptuur die de afstand tussen twee handen – op weg naar een handdruk – vorm geeft. Barakeh baseerde zich voor dit werk op het iconische beeldhouwwerk van Maurice Harron, genaamd Hands Across the Divide, dat symbool staat voor de verdeeldheid tussen Katholieken en Protestanten in de stad Derry~Londonderry in Noord-Ierland. Materialised Distance verwijst naar de handen van de twee gebeeldhouwde figuren; in een poging tot verzoening raken ze elkaar bijna, maar nét niet. De kloof tussen beiden is als het ware eeuwig, maar ook de poging om elkaar de hand te reiken is oneindig. Barakehs werk materialiseert de afstand tussen de handen van twee individuen die symbool staan voor twee gemeenschappen, hun geschiedenis en ideologie. Materialised Distance is a ceramic sculpture which bridges the distance between two hands that are centimeters away from touching. Barakeh’s work is drawn from Maurice Harron’s iconic public sculpture Hands Across the Divide, which symbolizes the division between Catholics and Protestants in the doubly named City of Derry~Londonderry in Northern Ireland. Barakeh’s work reflects on the hands of the monument’s two figures; frozen in an unfinished reconciliation, almost touching, but never truly joining. There exists between them an eternal gap. Materialized Distance creates a literal bridge between the two hands, two communities, histories and ideologies. What once was an unresolvable, negative space is transformed into a palpable mass, a handshake.

No Man’s Land toont een wereldkaart waarop met gouddraad de grenzen tussen oorlogsgebieden zijn gemarkeerd. Voor dit werk liet Barakeh zich inspireren door ‘Kintsugi’, een traditionele Japanse techniek waarbij gebroken keramieken voorwerpen worden hersteld met gouden lak. Het proces benadrukt en viert het stukgaan en herstel als integraal onderdeel van de levenscyclus van een object, eerder dan het te verhullen.

In No Man’s Land, past Barakeh deze techniek toe op de conflicten die onze wereld verdelen. Met gouddraad hecht Barakeh de geografische snijwonden met gouddraad. No Man’s Land herdefinieert op die manier cartografie als een praktijk van genezing en herstel, een interpretatie die diametraal staat ten opzichte van de historische associatie van cartografie met verovering en begrenzing.

No Man’s Land presents us with a world map upon which threads of gold are sewn demarcating areas of ongoing violent conflict. Barakeh’s work touches on the Japanese technique of ‘Kintsugi’, in which broken ceramic objects are mended with golden lacquer. This creates a new life for the object, more perfect for its flaws and more precious for its history. The process celebrates breakage and repair as an integral part of an object’s history, not something to be hidden away. In No Man’s Land, Barakeh has applied this craft philosophy to man-made political divisions around the globe. Using the traditionally feminine labor of needlework, Barakeh sutured the geographic lacerations with golden thread. No Man’s Land is a reimagining of the practice of cartography as one of healing; a new form which counters its historical association with conquest and demarcation.

De fotoreeks The Untitled Images bestaat uit vijf nieuwsfoto’s genomen in Syrië die taferelen van leed en verlies tonen. Op minutieuze wijze haalt Barakeh het beeld van de slachtoffers uit de foto; na zijn ingreep zijn enkel nog hun lichaamscontouren te zien. Dit invasieve maar beschermende proces, benadrukt de aanwezigheid van de slachtoffers door hun afwezigheid, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd hun anonimiteit terugkrijgen.

Bovendien verschuift Barakeh op die manier de aandacht van de kijker naar het leed van hen die het slachtoffer dragen. Door het werk op lage hoogte te installeren, wordt de kijker verplicht zich te bukken en toenadering te zoeken tot het beeld.

De beeldenreeks resoneert met werk van kunstenaars zoals o.a.

Alfredo Jaar en geschriften als Susan Sontag’s ‘Regarding the Pain of Others’ (2003) die stereotypering, voyeurisme, en machtsverhoudingen in de hedendaagse fotojournalistiek aan de kaak stellen, en zo de verhouding tussen fotografie en empathie bevragen.

The photo series The Untitled Images consists of five news photos taken in Syria that show scenes of suffering and loss. Barakeh meticulously removes the image of the victims from the photo; after his operation, only their body contours remain. This process, equally savage and protective, highlights the presence of the victims through their absence, while simultaneously shielding them in anonymity. In addition, he shifts the viewer’s focus to the pain and suffering of those who carry the victim. By installing the work at a low height, Barakeh obliges the viewer to bend down, perhaps kneel, whilst approaching the image.

This series of images resonates with works by artists such as Alfredo Jaar and writings such as Susan Sontag’s ‘Regarding the Pain of Others’ (2003) that challenge stereotyping, voyeurism, and power relations in contemporary photojournalism, and question the relationship between photography and empathy.

One is een korte film in zwart-wit waarin performster Helga Davis je meeneemt in een meerstemmig manifest. Van achter vijf microfoons, en met een blik die zowel dwingend als kwetsbaar is, nodigt Davis het publiek uit om deel te nemen aan een ‘proud we-moment of many voices’. Ze roept op tot een stille revolutie waarin we – ondanks onze verschillen – haar blik op de wereld en die van anderen proberen te delen.

One is een film, een performance, een oproep tot actie, een gelofte, een verplichting, een plechtige onderneming, een oproep tot bewustzijn, een instructie, een standpunt tegen geesteloosheid en verstrooiing, een kunst van grenzen, een actieve stilte, een moeilijke liefde, een erkenning van mislukking, van gebrek, het is hard werk. Based on research, found materials and conversations, Cammock creates intersectional dialogues that look at individual and collective power, questioning the role of the individual, asking us to consider where we sit within the political and social spaces we inhabit: ‘I have a role in this, as I believe we all do’.

De reeks Shouting in Whispers bestaat uit vijf monochrome prints waarop statements de toeschouwer aanspreken. Sommige teksten zijn door Cammock zelf geschreven, andere zijn citaten van schrijvers, dichters en activisten, waaronder de maatschappijkritische hiphopgroep Public Enemy (‘This is not a love song’) en journaliste en politiek activiste Claudia Jones (‘Evocation is a mutual emotion’). De statements verwijzen naar een emotie, maar ook naar hoe die ervaren of gehoord wordt. Ze zetten aan tot reflectie, en dagen je uit om ze te testen op hun waarheidsgehalte.

The series Shouting in Whispers consists of five monochrome prints with statements that solicit a response from the viewer. Some of the texts are written by Cammock herself, others are quotes from writers, poets, and activists including the socially critical hip hop group Public Enemy (‘This is not a love song’) and journalist and political activist Claudia Jones (‘Evocation is a mutual emotion’). The statements refer to an emotion, but also to how these emotions are experienced, and heard by others. They challenge the viewer to put the statements as hypotheses to the test.

Part of my intent in all of my work circles around empathic engagement between voices; from the different voices in the projects to the relationships that emerge with the audience. My work is about the weaving together of stories.

My works can be described as documents of the encounter between the photographer and the subject, and of the act of fixing a situation for a period of time. Sometimes the scenery in my studio is left untouched for weeks, simply remaining in this one moment. Sometimes a model will hold a pose for almost an hour, while I adjust every wrinkle in the t-shirt, the hair, in this one gesture.

It’s almost like building a sculpture.

VLAKTE VAN NIETS Zo hard dat het waait – we hoeven niet te praten als jij niet wilt.

Je vouwt de wind tussen je vingers tot een eeuwig wegzwevend vliegtuigje dat ons een andere ruimte en tijd in laat kijken tot waar jij op een rotsblok zit met een blik alsof je je een plek herinnert waar je eindelijk zou kunnen blijven.

We zien hoe je niet langer beweegt. Er is werkelijk niets in die vlakte.

Als een woestijnroos, zo laag over laag groeit stilte-als je iets aanraakt, stuift het op.

De wind blaast je haren als een fakkel achter je hoofd.

Het is moeilijk dichterbij te komen.

Je kantelt je bekken, kromt je over je eigen hand.

Je wrijft je duim over je wijsvinger om te zien wat het is, dat glanzende. Om mij te laten zien wat het is. Als een speekseldraadje.

We hebben het gevoel zo dicht te zijn genaderd dat het ons had kunnen aanraken.

I’ve always enjoyed film because of the way it can make objects as well as people very present and viscerally accessible. And, in a way, they can render images that almost touch you physically and emotionally, and so mirror-touch seemed like a model for this, or an inspiration to make images that were more palpable somehow.

In de 16mm film At The Threshold vertelt Daria Martin het verhaal van een moeder en haar zoon en de sterke relatie tussen beiden.

Hun intieme huishouden wordt echter verstoord door de komst van de stiefmoeder van de jongen die hem op zijn verjaardag komt bezoeken.

De film is een door [Douglas] Sirk geïnspireerd melodrama, dat een antwoord vormt op de vraag: ‘Kan een moeder te veel empathie voor haar kind ervaren?’ Het is de tweede van drie korte films die Daria Martin creëerde naar aanleiding van haar onderzoek naar een vorm van verhoogde lichamelijke gevoeligheid die spiegel-aanraaksynesthesie wordt genoemd. Mensen met spiegel-aanrakingsynesthesie voelen een tastbare sensatie van aanraking op hun eigen lichaam wanneer ze zien dat een andere persoon, of zelfs een object, wordt aangeraakt. Sommige synaestheten ervaren ook spiegelpijn, spiegelbewegingen, spiegelademhaling of zelfs spiegelemotie, waardoor het delen van ervaringen leidt tot een vervaging tussen zichzelf en de ander. Martin verwerkte haar bevindingen in de structuur, dialogen en beelden van At The Threshold, evenals in de keuze voor 16mm film.

In the 16mm film, At The Threshold, Daria Martin tells the story of a mother and her son, and the strong relationship between the two of them. However, their intimate household is disrupted by the arrival of the boy’s stepmother who comes to visit him on his birthday.

The film is a [Douglas] Sirk-inspired melodrama provoked by the question: ‘Can a mother experience too much empathy for her child?’ It is the second of three short films created by Daria Martin inspired by her research into a form of heightened physical sensitivity called mirror-touch synaesthesia. People with mirrortouch feel a palpable sensation of touch on their own bodies when they see another person, or even an object, being touched. Some synaesthetes also experience mirror-pain, mirror-movement, mirrorbreathing or even mirror-emotion – extending the sharing of senses to a blurring between self and other. Martin aims to capture some

A finer route to oblivion is een tweezijdig, in de ruimte hangend, schilderij van de Belgische kunstenares Charline Tyberghein. Haar visuele universum wordt bewoond door terugkerende pictogrammen, symbolen die verschillende betekenissen genereren op basis van hun combinatie, zoals een persoonlijk alfabet. In zekere zin kan elk schilderij worden opgevat als een zelfportret. De universele betekenis van de pictogrammen laat echter ruimte voor de eigen interpretatie van de kijker. Op die manier is elk beeld evenzeer van Tyberghein als van de kijker. A finer route to oblivion is a two-sided, free hanging, painting by Belgian artist Charline Tyberghein. Her visual universe is populated by recurring pictograms, symbols that generate different meanings based on their combination, much like a personal alphabet. In a sense, each painting can be understood as a self-portrait. However, the universal meaning of the pictograms leaves room for the viewer’s own reading. In this way, each image is as much Tyberghein’s, as it is the viewer’s. Tyberghein’s combination of her visual poetry, humor and tenderness in combination with the trompe l’oeil technique creating depth in the two-sided free hanging painting results in a compelling tableau that draws you in, triggering your emotional imagination.

A finer route to oblivion can be understood to speak of balances in empathic relationships; how far do you go with someone’s ‘highs and lows’? And is empathy always sincere?

I am fascinated by how creative transpositions amongst language systems, animals, plants, raw materials and man-made objects facilitate endless opportunities for meaningful encounters amongst all sorts of agencies.

Foreigners bestaat uit een reeks porseleinen sculpturen, de grootte van een handpalm. Ze stellen twee of meer figuren voor, verwikkeld in een hartstochtelijke omhelzing. De zichtbare intimiteit van deze omhelzing verleent de sculpturen een zekere kwetsbaarheid. Dit gevoel wordt versterkt door Fontes’ keuze van schaal en de zichtbare poreusheid van de werkjes. Fontes begon haar Foreigners te maken als reactie op het Engelse landschap; ze werkte met porselein uit Engelse steengroeven om zichzelf op die manier een stukje Engeland toe te eigenen. Ze legt verder uit: De keuze van de schaal, het materiaal en de zorg die ik besteed aan de fragiele creatie, zijn een poging om de geldigheid van het woord ‘foreigner’, dat in Engeland vaak in pejoratieve en discriminerende zin wordt gebruikt, in twijfel te trekken. Foreigners are a series of small, palm-sized porcelain sculptures. They depict two or more figures, wrapped in a passionate embrace. The visible intimacy of this embrace provides the sculptures with a certain frailty.

This sense of vulnerability is further emphasized by Fontes’ choice of scale and the visible porousness of the sculptures. Fontes started to make the series in response to the English landscape, working with porcelain extracted from English quarries to appropriate a piece of England for herself. She further explains: The choice of scale, material, and the care I put in its fragile construction are an attempt to denaturalize and question the validity of the word ‘foreigner’, used popularly in England in a pejorative and discriminatory sense. The figurines depict processes of metamorphosis and hybridisation amongst the creatures we share this particular bio-political system with: trees, plants, rocks and fungi.

‘Foreigner’ and ‘Forest’ share the same root, ‘foris’, which means outside -outside the house, the city, the country, and outside of our own understanding of the world as humans.

These Foreigners are an attempt to put out there the question of what it is to be a person in the forest and with the forest, rather than outside of it. Soon enough, the individual figures evolved into families of human-like figures embracing each other, merged into a coral or foam-like matter, as if becoming one.

De verhouding tussen empathie en architectuur staat centraal in de film Cura. Het hoofdpersonage van de film is een schildpad die Cura, de Romeinse godin van de zorg, personifieert. In een monoloog, ingesproken door de Amerikaanse actrice Joan La Barbara, vertelt Cura over de teloorgang van empathie en waarschuwt ze voor de ondergang van de mensheid. De tekst geschreven door Thorp Brown is zowel gebaseerd op passages uit de mythologie als op fragmenten uit het werk van de OostenrijksAmerikaanse architect Richard Neutra’s bekendste filosofische werk Survival by Design (1945). We volgen Cura doorheen de verschillende ruimtes van het VDL Research House II van Richard en Dion Neutra aan het Silver Lake Reservoir in Los Angeles. The film Cura explores the relationship between empathy and architecture. The protagonist of the film is a tortoise, an incarnation of Cura, the goddess of care. In a monologue, voiced by American vocalist Joan La Barbara, Cura talks about the loss of empathy and warns that this loss will ultimately lead to the demise of the human race. The text mixes the artist’s writing with mythology and passages from the Austrian-American architect Richard Neutra’s main philosophical treatise, Survival by Design (1954). We follow Cura through the various spaces of Richard and Dion Neutra’s VDL Research House II at Silver Lake Reservoir in Los Angeles.

Neutra is known for his therapeutic interpretation of architecture; in his projects, each environmental element was carefully designed to elicit human sensory and emotional responses. He viewed

architecture not only as a way to bring people closer together but also as a way to restore humanity’s balance with nature. e film is part of The Arcadia Center, an installation operating as an empathy training and rehabilitation center.

Het werk van de Tsjechische kunstenares Eva Koťátková is gebaseerd op noties van zorg en inclusie en stelt empathie voor als een kracht waarmee we kunnen handelen en onze wereld kunnen begrijpen. Voor The Machine for Restoring Empathy ‘stelde [ze] zich een groep mensen en niet-mensen voor: dieren, planten, zelfs objecten en machines – die besluiten om op één plek samen te komen, om te delen en samen te handelen. De machine vertegenwoordigt een ontmoetingsplaats en een structuur om deze lichamen samen te voegen tot een tijdelijk organisme, een collectief en ondersteunend lichaam waarin elk element bijdraagt wat hij/zij/het kan bieden.’ (ArtForum, interview, 7 feb 2020). Het werk bestaat uit een metalen onderstructuur en aan elkaar genaaide stroken stof. Het is een soort levend organisme dat dieren, mensen, planten, objecten en hun onderlinge relaties omvat, en dat geactiveerd wordt door een performance.

Voorafgaand aan de tentoonstelling nam een groep studenten van de KU Leuven deel aan een workshop over empathie en mimesis, georganiseerd door Eva Koťátková en Prof. Nidesh Lawtoo. De workshop moedigde hen aan om hun empathisch gedrag te verkennen door persoonlijke geschiedenissen te delen en te verzamelen, en strategieën tot empathisch gedrag en verhaalvertelling te onderzoeken. Tijdens de tentoonstelling kunnen bezoekers de installatie binnengaan en naar deze verhalen luisteren of een gesprek aangaan met de mediatoren die je uitnodigen om eveneens, voor korte tijd, deel uit te maken van The Machine for Restoring Empathy.

Eva Koťátková’s work is based on notions of care and inclusion and presents empathy as a force through which to act and understand our world.

When envisioning The Machine for Restoring Empathy, she ‘imagined a group of humans and non-humans: animals, plants, even objects and machines – all deciding to meet in one place to share and act together.

The Machine represents a meeting place and temporary structure to combine these bodies into one temporary organism, one collective and supportive body in which each thing contributes whatever he/she/it can offer.’ (ArtForum, interview, Feb 7, 2020). The work consists of a metal skeleton and sewn-together strips of fabric. It is a kind of living organism that encompasses animals, people, plants, objects, and their relationships to each other, and becomes activated through a performance.

Prior to the exhibition, a group of KU Leuven students participated in a storytelling workshop about empathy and mimesis, organized by Eva Koťátková and Prof. Nidesh Lawtoo. The workshop encouraged them to explore their empathic behaviour by sharing and collecting personal

During the exhibition, visitors can enter the installation and listen to these stories or engage in a conversation with mediators, inviting you to become part of The Machine for Restoring Empathy even if just for a short while.

Temper Tantrums – Elliott Erwitt

Amerikaans fotograaf Elliott Erwitt nam de foto Temper Tantrums in 1981 in hun appartement in New York. Het beeld waarin zijn dochters Sasha en Amy een centrale rol spelen, geeft inzicht in een herkenbaar huiselijk tafereel en roept meteen de vraag op met wie je het meeste meeleeft.

Het vermogen om met één beeld universele vragen te stellen, maakt Erwitts werk tijdloos. Op de vraag of hij zijn foto’s beschouwt als klassiekers, antwoordde Erwitt ooit: ‘Over mijn beelden heb ik geen mening. Het decor in oude foto’s mag dan zichtbaar ‘verouderd’ zijn, dat is slechts bijzaak. Het gaat over de mensen, de emoties, en die zijn van alle tijden’.

Erwitt, die met zijn carrière van ruim zeventig jaar geldt als een van de grootste fotografen van de voorbije eeuw, staat bekend om zijn iconische en humoristische zwart-wit beelden. Terwijl hij foto’s nam van beroemde figuren zoals Richard Nixon, Che Guevara, en Jackie Kennedy, wordt het merendeel van zijn beeldarchief bevolkt door kinderen en dieren.

American photographer Elliott Erwitt shot Temper Tantrums in 1981 in their apartment in New York. The image in which his daughters, Sasha and Amy, play the lead role, depicts a homely and all too familiar scene, immediately raising the question with who one empathises the most.

The capacity to ask universal questions with one image makes Erwitt’s work timeless. Asked if he considers his photographs to be classics, Erwitt once replied, ‘I have no opinion about my images. The scenery in old photographs may be visibly ‘outdated,’ but that is only secondary. It’s about the people, the emotions, and those are of all times’.

Erwitt, who has had a long and distinguished career as a commercial photographer and photojournalist, is best known for his iconic and humoristic black-white photography. While capturing some of the most famous persons of the 20th century, such as Richard Nixon, Che Guevara, and Jackie Kennedy, the majority of Erwitt’s images are populated with children and animals.

Een intieme meeslepende ervaring die macht, wederzijdse afhankelijkheid en de ruimte tussen mensen onderzoekt. De ervaring vertelt het verhaal van een fictieve machine – gebouwd om de mysteries van menselijke relaties te ontcijferen. Het werkt als de deeltjesversneller in CERN, maar in plaats van atomen, laat het mensen tegen elkaar opbotsen. De machine heeft als doel om het onzichtbare materiaal dat tussen mensen doorgaat te identificeren en te begrijpen. The Circle and the Square is een meerdelige filminstallatie over de relaties tussen de blanke en Pakistaanse gemeenschappen in de streek van Pendle in Lancashire, Engeland. Textielarbeiders uit deze verschillende gemeenschappen werkten jaren zij aan zij in de katoenweverij van Brierfield. Na de sluiting van de molen verloor de streek echter een plaats waar de verschillende culturen konden samenkomen. Het verlies van de molen als ontmoetingsplaats leidde tot de situatie van vandaag waarbij de twee gemeenschappen eerder gescheiden leven van elkaar.

The Circle and the Square is de neerslag van een tweejarig project van Suzanne Lacy in opdracht van Super Slow Way, en in samenwerking met de bevolking van Pendle in Noordwest-Engeland en lokale organisaties In Situ, The Free Spiritual Centre, Building Bridges Pendle en Brierfield Action in the Community.

De filminstallatie documenteert een driedaagse performance die plaatsvond in september 2016 toen de katoenfabriek Brierfield Mill, die sinds de sluiting in 2007 in verval was geraakt, opnieuw geopend werd voor de gemeenschap. Vrijwilligers gaven rondleidingen in de fabriek, interviewden inwoners over het verleden en de toekomst van de regio, en organiseerden o.a. een reünie voor de arbeiders die er werkten. Het project culmineerde in een dagvullende performance met Dhikr en Shape Note gezangen en een banket voor 500 inwoners, de grootste bijeenkomst in de fabriek sinds de deuren werden gesloten.

De installatie verkent verder de verweven geschiedenis van arbeid en migratie in Noordwest-Engeland aan de hand van o.a. een tijdlijn, een documentaire over de productie achter de schermen, en een videoprojectie van twee voormalige arbeiders die hun ervaringen over het werken in de fabriek beschrijven.

ground, resulting in the present-day situation in which former employees still live locally but cease to mix. The work is the culmination of a two-year project, commissioned by Super Slow Way, which Suzanne Lacy created in collaboration with the people of Pendle in Northwest England, and local organisations In Situ, The Free Spiritual Centre, Building Bridges Pendle and Brierfield Action in the Community.

The film installation documents a three-day performance that took place in September 2016 when the Brierfield Mill, a cotton mill sitting in disrepair since its closure in 2007, was once again open to the community. Volunteers led tours of the mill, interviewed residents on the past and future of the region, and organised a mill-workers’ reunion and other events. The project culminated in a day-long performance featuring Dhikr chanting and Shape Note Singing. The Circle and the Square represents the work of many residents in the community including conversations, collaborations, organisational capacity-building, and the largest gathering at the mill since its doors were closed, as 500 residents sat down to dinner together.

Exploring the intertwined histories of labour and migration in northwest England, the installation continues with a video projection featuring two former millworkers describing their experiences working in the mills, a timeline, and a behind the scenes production documentary.

Het werk van Alexandra Leyre Mein ontspringt uit een paradox. Ze is even gefascineerd door de zoektocht naar hoe de andere voor te stellen en te omvatten, als door de onbereikbaarheid ervan. (…). De beeldenreeks Myofibril van Alexandra Leyre Mein ontstond als reactie op de golf van aanslagen in Europa. Meer algemeen, kunnen de beelden gezien worden als een toenaderingspoging om de oorsprong van het onbegrip of de onwetendheid van de andere, en onszelf, te omvatten. De sculpturen doen denken aan twee lichamen die tegenover elkaar staan als trotse territoriale dieren; zichzelf op de meest imposante manier tonend om de andere te intimideren. Tegelijkertijd, bewegen ze naar elkaar toe als in een ontluikende omhelzing, zich bewust van de precariteit van hun gedeelde basis. Het onvoltooide aspect versterkt het gevoel dat de sculpturen nog steeds in groei zijn en terzelfdertijd ook uiteen beginnen te vallen. Deze dualiteit van interpretatie staat centraal in de manier waarop Leyre Mein haar werk relateert aan de diepgewortelde emoties, worstelingen en spanningen van het leven.

The Myofibril sculpture series by Alexandra Leyre Mein were created in response to the wave of attacks in Europe. More generally, the sculptures can be understood as an attempt to grasp the origins of the ignorance or misunderstanding of the other, and ourselves. The sculptures are reminiscent of two bodies facing each other as proud territorial animals; displaying themselves in the most imposing way to intimidate the other. At the same time, they move toward each other as if in a cautious embrace, aware of the precarity of their shared base. The unfinished aspect reinforces the sense that the sculptures are still growing and at the same time already begin to fall apart. This ambiguity is central to the way Leyre Mein relates her work to the deeply rooted emotions, struggles and tensions of life.

In de tentoonstelling Wired for Empathy presenteert Francesca Grilli voor de eerste keer de video-installatie RAYS samen met de performance SPARKS 2021 als totaalproject onder de titel GLARE. RAYS is een single channel video waarin we een groep kinderen volgen op hun dwaaltocht doorheen een verlaten school en theatergebouw.

Terwijl ze op verkenning gaan, ontdekken ze één voor één een soort pet die hen vreemd, maar tegelijkertijd vertrouwd voorkomt. Met de pet op onthullen de kinderen zich als orakels die de handpalm van een volwassene lezen en hen iets vertellen over hun toekomst. De petten, als een reeks sculpturen, vervolledigen de video-installatie.

SPARKS 2021 is een performance die wordt voorafgegaan door een workshop, waarin de gangbare machtsrelatie tussen kind en volwassene op zijn kop gezet wordt. Het is gebaseerd op een kleine maar revolutionaire daad: De lezing van onze toekomst wordt in de handen van kinderen gelegd, als een gebaar van hoop, en een breuk met het verleden.

Na enkele workshopdagen met de kunstenares Francesca Grilli en de dichteres Azzurra D’Agostino, begeleidt een groep kinderen uit de buurt een groep volwassenen in de tentoonstellingsruimte. Eén voor één en slechts één keer, nodigen ze een volwassene uit om hun handpalm te laten lezen. Zo starten de kinderen een open, onthullend en interpreterend proces waarbij ze al reflecterend hun toekomstvisie uitdrukken.

In deze voorstelling van SPARKS 2021 wordt het contact tussen de handpalmen vervangen door een kleine zaklantaarn; licht wordt zo een element van ongrijpbare overdracht dat de schitterende kracht – de sparks – van een kind vergroot, en het gezamenlijk spel in magie hult.

In STUK zullen de voorstellingen plaatsvinden in de namiddagen van 26 en 27 juni, in de tentoonstellingsruimtes van Atelier 1 en 2. Op de daaraan voorafgaande tentoonstellingsdata kan je een installatieversie van het werk zien.

RAYS is a single channel video in which we follow a group of children, roaming through a deserted school and theatre building. As they follow their course throughout the building, one by one, they discover a cap which seems strangely familiar to them. When they put it on, the children reveal themselves as newly trained clairvoyants, each engaging in a palm reading session with an adult. The hats, as a series of sculptures, complement the installation presentation of RAYS. SPARKS 2021 is a performance preceded by a workshop, in which the power relations between child and adult are turned upside down. It is based on a small but revolutionary act: consigning in the hands of children the reading of our future as a gesture of hope and rupture with the past.

After an elaborate workshop with the artist Francesca Grilli and the poet Azzurra D’Agostino, a group of local children accompanies a group of adults inside the exhibition space. There, they can read their hands, one at a time and once only, thus activating an open revelatory and interpretative process, where they themselves are the makers of visions and reflections.

In this edition of SPARKS 2021, the element of touch is replaced by a small flashlight; transforming light into an element of intangible transmission, augmenting a child’s illuminating power – its sparks – and cloaking the shared game in magic.

In STUK, the performances will take place in the afternoons of June 26th and June 27th in the exhibition spaces of Atelier 1 and 2. In the exhibition dates prior, the visitor will be able to see an installation version of the work.

Thanx 4 nothing is een multi-channel video in zwart-wit beelden die hulde brengt aan John Giorno, invloedrijk Amerikaans dichter en overleden partner van Ugo Rondinone.

Het werk toont de Amerikaanse dichter die, in maatpak en op blote voeten op de lege scène van het Palais des Glaces theater in Parijs, het titelgedicht voordraagt. Geschreven op zijn zeventigste verjaardag in 2006, en opgevat als een uitgebreide en brede uiting van dankbaarheid aan ‘iedereen voor alles,’ kijkt Giorno’s poëtische monoloog terug op zijn leven met openhartig inzicht en humor, reflecterend op liefdes en verlies, vrienden en vijanden, seks en drugs, depressie en spiritueel aanvaarden.

STUK presenteert het werk als een installatie op twee schermen in een black box theater, waarin de film in zwart-wit, de soundtrack en de ritmische intonatie van John Giorno’s stem zorgen voor een immersieve ervaring. Thanx 4 nothing is a multi-channel video installation that pays tribute to Ugo Rondinone’s late husband, John Giorno. The work presents the American poet, in a suit and bare feet on the empty stage of the Palais des Glaces theatre in Paris, performing the titular poem. Written on his seventieth birthday in 2006, and framed as an extended and wide-­ ranging expression of gratitude to ‘everyone for everything,’ Giorno’s poetic monologue looks back over his life with frank insight and humour, reflecting on loves and losses, friends and enemies, sex and drugs, depression and spiritual acceptance. (Ralph Rugoff, Hayward Gallery, 2016).

The installation in STUK presents the work as a dual-screen installation in a black box theater, creating an immersive environment through the use of black-and-white film, minimalist score, and the rhythmic intonations of Giorno’s own voice. It is a space to linger in, and enjoy this remarkable personal narrative, which at the same time provides a very particular insight into the New York art scene of the past few decades.

Het resultaat is dat we aan het eind van de middag veranderd zijn in deze omgang met andermans pijn, zo toont de slotopstelling. Dat is belangrijk, want er staat meer op het spel dan het slagen van een voorstelling. Als twaalf onbekenden gedurende twee uur bereid zijn tot spreken, luisteren, nuanceren en van standpunt veranderen, dan is er misschien toch nog hoop voor het overleven van dat kostbare begrip ‘empathie’.

N Hoe kunnen we pijn van anderen vatten en begrijpen?

In The Pain of Others neemt theatermaker en filosoof Peter Aers ons mee in een wereld waar denken en spreken over pijn een plaats krijgt. Na interviews en gesprekken met wetenschappers, futurologen, psychiaters, dansers, volwassenen en kinderen die psychisch en fysiek lijden, stellen hij en Erika Sprey in de performance enkele radicale vragen: kunnen individuele ervaringen van pijn gedeeld worden met een grotere gemeenschap? Verandert de wijze waarop we over pijn spreken de manier waarop we pijn ervaren? En wat met de pijn van de afwezige?

Met zijn gespreksperformances creëert Peter Aers eigenzinnig werk op de grens tussen theater, participatie en reflectie. Met een open en nieuwsgierige blik organiseert hij oefeningen in dialoog, waarbij de relatie met het publiek centraal staat. After many interviews and discussions with scientists, dancers, futurologists, psychiatrists, adults and children suffering from psychological and physical illnesses, he and Erika Sprey pose some incisive questions: can such an individual experience as pain be shared with a larger community? Does talking about pain actually change our experience of pain? And what about the pain of the absent?

Geoffrey Burton & Sarah Yu Zeebroek Benjamin Abel & The Unrequired Love – Spectacles N Première van het zinderende liefdesritueel Spectacles, waarin operette, elektronica en dans versmelten, naast een audiovisuele performance van gitarist Geoffrey Burton en kunstenaar Sarah Yu Zeebroek.

Gitarist Geoffrey Burton en kunstenaar Sarah Yu Zeebroek zijn al langer elkaars levensgezellen maar besloten nu om ook samen een performance te maken. Daarbij versmelten de tegendraadse gitaarmuziek van Burton met de surrealistische vormentaal van Zeebroek. De muziek komt uit Burtons debuutalbum Me Te Podia (2020).

Zeebroek vertrekt dan weer van tekeningen en vormen die ze manipuleert met oude overheadprojectoren.

Contratenor en operaregisseur Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe en muzikant Laurens Mariën slaan de handen in elkaar voor een performance-­concert dat schippert tussen een spektakel en een liefdesritueel. Bipolaire sferen, operateske dada blues punkpop, een hoge stem, donkere beats en theatraliteit maken de lente in dit groots intiem spektakel.

Samen met danser Hanako Hayakawa en schrijver Louise van den Eede koesteren ze de hoop op een andere samenleving, waar spektakels een bevrijdende oerkracht hebben, waar alle mogelijke gedaanten van liefde van kostuum wisselen.

E Premiere of the sizzling love ritual Spectacles, which fuses operetta, electronics and dance, alongside an audiovisual performance by guitarist Geoffrey Burton and artist Sarah Yu Zeebroek.

Guitarist Geoffrey Burton and artist Sarah Yu Zeebroek are life partners, but have now decided to make a performance together. They blend Burton’s wayward guitar sounds with the surrealistic visuals of Zeebroek.

The music comes from Burton’s debut album Me Te Podia (2020). Zeebroek starts from drawings and shapes that she manipulates with overhead projectors.

Countertenor and opera director Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe and producer Laurens Mariën are joining forces for a performance-concert that balances between a spectacle and a love ritual. Bipolar atmospheres, operatic dada blues punk-pop, a high voice, dark beats and theatricality characterize this grand intimate spectacle. Together with dancer Hanako Hayakawa and writer Louise van den Eede they cherish the hope for a different society, in which spectacles have a liberating power, where all possible forms of love change costumes.

Slumberland & Sainkho Namtchylak Pak Yan Lau – Bakunawa

N Release show van Bakunawa, het nieuwe ensemblewerk van Pak Yan Lau, naast samenwerking tussen Slumberland en de Tuvaanse stemkunstenaar Sainkho Namtchylak.

Jochem Baelus a.k.a. Slumberland construeerde een nieuwe klankinstallatie. Hierbij vertrok hij van de karakteristieken van de menselijke stem en vertaalde hij dit naar zijn mechanische instrumenten. Met dit instrumentarium treedt hij in dialoog met de Tuvaanse stemkunstenaar Sainkho Namtchylak.

Zij maakte zich de techniek van de keelzang eigen alvorens ze begon te experimenteren met speciale stemtechnieken. Een unieke combinatie van artiesten die voor het eerst samen te horen zal zijn.

De Belgische componist en multi-­ instrumentalist Pak Yan Lau stelt haar nieuwe project Bakunawa voor, een ensemblewerk voor vijf muzikanten. Verwacht een vol podium met speelgoedpiano’s, metalen buizen, harp, percussie en elektronica. De composities zelf zijn geïnspireerd door Aziatische rituele muziek (zoals gamelan), ambient en minimal music – denk Philip Glass en Eliane Radigue.

Weetje: Bakunawa is een slangachtige draak uit de Filipijnen. Om haar weg te jagen, spelen mensen luid op potten en pannen.

He started from the characteristics of the human voice and how to translate this to his mechanical instruments.

With these instruments he will enter into dialogue with the Tuvan voice artist Sainkho Namtchylak. She mastered the technique of throat singing before she started experimenting with special vocal techniques. A unique combination of artists that will be heard together for the first time.

Belgian composer and multi-­ instrumentalist Pak Yan Lau presents her new project Bakunawa, an ensemble work for five musicians. Expect a full stage with toy pianos, metal pipes, harp, percussion and electronics.

The compositions themselves are inspired by Asian ritual music (such as gamelan), ambient and minimal music – think Philip Glass and Eliane Radigue. Fact: Bakunawa is a snakelike dragon from the Philippines. To scare her away, people play loudly on pots and pans.

Farida Amadou Zwerm – Great Expectations

N Elektrisch gitaarkwartet Zwerm (mét drummer Karen Willems) presenteert hun nieuwe album Great Expectations, naast avontuurlijke basklanken van Farida Amadou.

Farida Amadou is één van de meest opwindende jonge stemmen in de Europese vrije improvisatiescène.

Niet voor niets speelde ze al samen met namen als Thurston Moore en Steven Noble. Ze bespeelt de basgitaar zoals niemand anders dat doet: ongepolijst, metalig qua timbre en met een felle nadruk op ritme en textuur. De laatste tijd experimenteert ze meer en meer met effecten en elektronica, wat resulteert in gelaagde en harmonische drones.

Het elektrische gitaarkwartet Zwerm sloopt al sinds 2007 de muren tussen avant garde rock en hedendaags klassiek. Ze combineren als geen ander klanken en stijlen uit de underground met de virtuositeit en zin voor compositie van geschoolde gitaristen.

Voor hun nieuwe album Great Expectations (2020) ging Zwerm aan het experimenteren met microtonaliteit. Ook deden ze een beroep op drummer Karen Willems om een laag percussie toe te voegen. Dit allemaal onder het alziend oog van producer Rudy Trouvé. Het resultaat is een album vol contrasten: van welluidend tot wrang, van ritmische grooves tot fluisterende klankkleuren, van elektrische gitaar tot Oosterse snaarinstrumenten.

Farida Amadou is one of the most exciting young voices in the European free improvisation scene.

She has already collaborated with musicians like Thurston Moore and Steven Noble. Amadou plays the bass guitar like no one else does: unpolished, with a metallic timbre and a strong emphasis on rhythm.

Recently she has been experimenting with effects and electronics, further resulting in layered, harmonic drones.

The electric guitar quartet Zwerm has been demolishing the walls between avant garde rock and contemporary classical music since 2007. Like no other they combine sounds and styles from the underground with the virtuosity and sense of composition of skilled guitarists.

For their new album Great Expectations (2020), Zwerm wanted to experiment with microtonality. They also called upon drummer Karen Willems to add a layer of percussion.

All this under the all-seeing eye of producer Rudy Trouvé. The result is an album full of contrasts: from consonant to harsch, from rhythmic grooves to whispering timbres, from the electric guitar to Eastern stringed instruments.

Ghost Tropic (film) + live soundtrack

by Brecht Ameel Maika Garnica & Ans Mertens – Interlude N Magisch filmportret van Brussel by night met live begeleiding van gitarist Brecht Ameel, naast verstilde klankvideo van Maika Garnica en Ans Mertens.

Ghost Tropic is de derde speelfilm van Bas Devos. De film belicht het nachtelijke Brussel als een intimistisch dromenland, met schoonheid op zelfs de meest donkere plekjes. Een warme stadssymfonie die de menselijke kant van onze grootstad toont. De soundtrack van gitarist Brecht Ameel is minstens zo mooi als de film zelf. Zijn breekbare en verstilde composities voor resonator guitar resoneren prachtig met het magische nachtportret dat Ghost Tropic is.

‘Resonantie is de schaduw van geluid,’ die gedachte ging door het hoofd van kunstenaar Maika Garnica bij een bezoek aan het Woonzorgcentrum Immaculata in Edegem. Zoals een schaduw veroorzaakt wordt door licht, zo ontstaat resonantie bij het maken van geluid. Garnica nam filmmaker Ans Mertens onder de arm en samen ondervonden ze dat resonantie ook een maatschappelijke betekenis kan hebben: hoe resoneren de levens van een oudere generatie in de samenleving en bij een jongere generatie? Het resultaat is een korte, verstilde klankvideo waarin de keramische klankobjecten van Garnica centraal staan, hun vormen, schaduwen en klanken.

Ghost Tropic is Bas Devos’ third film. The film highlights Brussels by night as an intimate dreamland, with beauty in even the darkest places. A warm urban symphony that shows the human side of our metropolis.

The soundtrack by guitarist Brecht Ameel is at least as beautiful as the film itself. His fragile and hushed compositions for resonator guitar resonate beautifully with the magical night portrait that is Ghost Tropic.

‘Resonance is the shadow of sound,’ that thought went through the head of artist Maika Garnica when visiting the Residential Care Center Immaculata in Edegem. Just as a shadow is caused by light, resonance is created when making sound.

Garnica took filmmaker Ans Mertens under her wing and together they discovered that resonance can also have a social meaning: how do the lives of an older generation resonate in society and with a younger generation?

The result is a short, quiet sound video that focuses on Garnica’s ceramic sound objects, their forms, shadows and sounds.

N Met minimale en repetitieve bewegingen, ritme en snelheid nemen drummer Will Guthrie en choreografe Mette Ingvartsen het publiek mee op een extatische trip.

All Around is het resultaat van een ontmoeting tussen drummer Will Guthrie en choreografe/danseres Mette Ingvartsen. Het publiek omringt het speelvlak, waarin het drumstel, een bewegende lichtinstallatie en de lichamen van de performers de confrontatie met elkaar aangaan.

Draaiingen, ritme en snelheid zijn de belangrijkste componenten van een performance die opbouwt tot een extatische trance.

Will Guthrie is een Australische drummer / percussionist, gevestigd in Parijs. Hij speelt solo en in verschillende bands, en maakt gebruik van verschillende combinaties van drums, percussie, versterking en elektronica. Mette Ingvartsen is een Deense choreografe en danseres, gevestigd in Brussel. In haar hybride praktijk combineert ze dans en beweging met andere disciplines, zoals beeldende kunst, technologie, taal en theorie.

Will Guthrie is an Australian drummer/percussionist living in France. He plays solo and in several bands, using different combinations of drums, percussion, amplification and electronics. Mette Ingvartsen is a Danish choreographer and dancer, living in Brussels. Her work is characterized by hybridity and engages in extending choreographic practices by combining dance and movement with other domains such as visual art, technology, language and theory.

Het Audio Atelier – SAMENKLANK: Een podcast over muziek en menselijkheid N Naar aanleiding van Artefact Sound maakte Het Audio Atelier een podcast in drie afleveringen over muziek en menselijkheid.

Muziek is meer dan alleen mooi. In muziek leren we wie we zijn en waar we toe in staat zijn. En het is ook een cruciaal ingrediënt voor verbondenheid en wederzijdse afstemming.

Velma Spell – Constellation Audio Walk

N Audiowandeling door de straten van Leuven, in kaart gebracht via sterrenbeelden, op zoek naar relaties tussen planeet Aarde en het universum.

Velma Spell is het alter ego van geluidskunstenaars Liew Niyomkarn en Inne Eysermans. Het duo maakte in opdracht van STUK een constellatie audiowandeling door de straten van Leuven die zich richt op manieren van kijken en luisteren in het universum.

Elke wandeling neemt de vorm aan van een sterrenbeeld. Kies 1 sterrenbeeld uit en volg de route terwijl je naar de audio track luistert. De wandeling duurt ongeveer 30 minuten.

Vanuit het Artefact thema ‘Wired for Empathy’ verkennen Liew en Inne in hun audiowandeling wetenschap, kosmologie en de relatie tussen aardbewoners en het universum. Door chaos en harmonie op te sporen en te traceren, beginnend vanuit Leuven richting de ruimte en terug naar onze planeet Aarde.

Anouk De Clercq

Elke Plovie & Sam Pless: Zorgzame Buurten

N Gefascineerd door dat wat achter de ‘realiteit’ ligt of tussen het zichtbare en de verbeelding, vindt het werk van Anouk De Clercq (°1971, BE) een vorm in film, video, en tekst. Haar recent werk is gebaseerd op het utopische idee van ‘radicale empathie’.

In deze artist talk gaat De Clercq dieper in op haar praktijk en de videoinstallatie One. Naast een film, een performance, een protestsong, een oproep tot actie, een belofte … is One een uitnodiging om complexiteit te omarmen en in onze wereld te staan met passend levendig gevoel.

N Veel mensen zorgen voor elkaar, en dat gebeurt steeds meer als ‘zorgzame buurten’. Spontane burenhulp en buurtcomités zijn bottom-up actief zorgzaam bezig, maar ook de overheid stimuleert top-down de ontwikkeling van zorgzame buurten. Gestoeld op de resultaten van het praktijkgerichte wetenschappelijk onderzoek Zorgzame Buurten gaan Elke Plovie en Sam Pless, beide onderzoekers aan hogeschool UCLL, dieper in op de uitdagingen bij het samen zorg dragen in een buurt. Ze verbinden die uitdagingen met enkele werken uit de tentoonstelling.

E Fascinated by what lies behind ‘reality or in between the visible and the imaginary, the work of Anouk De Clercq (°1971, BE) takes the shape of film, video and text. Her recent work is based on the utopian idea of ‘radical empathy’.

In this artist talk, De Clercq provides an insight into her practice and the video installation One. Besides a film, a performance, a 21st century protest song, a call to action, a pledge …

One is an invitation to embrace complexity and attend to our world with a befitting vibrancy of feeling.

Nidesh Lawtoo The Mimetic Foundations of Empathy N Empathie wordt vaak beperkt tot een moreel gevoel, maar wat als het menselijk vermogen om ‘zich in te leven’ aan de kern raakt van esthetische ervaringen en misschien zelfs levenservaringen in het algemeen?

In het kader van het project Homo Mimeticus neemt Prof. Nidesh Lawtoo de tentoonstelling Wired for Empathy als startpunt om de menselijke neiging tot mimetische/empathische ervaringen te herbekijken. Immers, meerdere factoren, van Theodor Lipps’ concept van Einfühlung (‘invoelen’), waaruit het begrip ‘empathie’ is voortgekomen, tot de recente ontdekking van ‘spiegelneuronen’, lijken er inderdaad op te wijzen dat de mens ‘bedraad is voor empathie.’

In zijn lezing onderzoekt Prof.

Lawtoo hoe de kunstwerken in deze tentoonstelling de wereld niet simpelweg weergeven vanop een autonome en ongeïnteresseerde afstand.

Integendeel, ze moedigen ons aan om, met al onze zintuigen, te experimenteren met de gedeelde affecten die onszelf en anderen, geesten en lichamen, mensen en niet-mensen, ervaringen in het leven en artistieke ervaringen, verbinden en ontkoppelen.

E Empathy is often restricted to a moral feeling, but what if the human ability to ‘feel into’ others goes to the palpitating heart of aesthetic and, perhaps, life experiences in general?

Part of the project Homo Mimeticus, Prof. Nidesh Lawtoo takes the exhibition as a timely occasion to reconsider a human propensity for mimetic/empathic experiences that are increasingly recognized as central to aesthetics (from aisthēsis, ‘sensation’). From Theodor Lipps’s concept of Einfühlung (‘feeling into’), out of which the concept of ‘empathy’ was born, to the recent discovery of ‘mirror neurons,’ there are indeed multiple indications that humans are ‘wired for empathy.’

This talk explores how the artworks animating this exhibition do not simply represent the world from an autonomous and disinterested distance.

Rather, they encourage us to experiment with all our senses the shared affects that both connect and disconnect self and others, minds and bodies, humans and nonhumans, experiences in life and artistic experiences.

Rudi D’Hooge – Waar komt onze empathie vandaan en waarom?

N In zijn les voor de XXIste eeuw gaat Prof. Rudi D’Hooge vanuit het domein van de evolutionaire psychologie aan de slag met volgende vraag: waar komt (ons gevoel voor) menselijke empathie vandaan, en waarom?

Na een korte kadering van het begrip empathie en aanverwante concepten, neemt Prof. D’Hooge je mee doorheen de wondere wereld van de menselijke hersenen. Onze hersenen spelen niet alleen een belangrijke rol in het empathisch vermogen, maar zijn ook zo verschillend van andere diersoorten, dat er een evolutionair voordeel moet zijn dat verklaart waarom dit zo is. Doorheen de les positioneert Prof. D’Hooge zijn stellingen binnen, tussen en af en toe in tegenstelling tot de geschriften van o.a. Frans De Waal, Michael Tomasello, Richard Leakey en Sarah Blaffer Hrdy.

E In his ‘lecture for the XXIst century’, Prof. Rudi D’Hooge attacks the following question from the field of evolutionary psychology: where does our (feeling for) human empathy come from? And why?

After a short definition of the term empathy and its related concepts, prof. D’Hooge takes you on a journey through the wondrous world of the human brain. Our brain does not only play an important role in our capacity for empathy, it also differs significantly from other species, to the extent that there must have been an evolutionary advantage to explain this. Throughout his lecture, Prof. D’Hooge builds up his argument positioning himself alongside and sometimes in opposition to the writings of a.o. Frans De Waal, Michael Tomasello, Richard Leakey and Sarah Blaffer Hrdy.

Prof. Rudi D’Hooge is gewoon hoogleraar aan de Faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen van de KU Leuven. Hij is tevens hoofd van het Laboratorium voor Biologische Psychologie, en lid van LBI — KU Leuven Breininstituut.

Prof. Rudi D’Hooge is Full Professor at the KU Leuven Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. He is also the Head of the Laboratory for Biological Psychology and a member of LBI — KU Leuven Brain Institute.

N Het neerpennen van je gedachten is een individueel proces. Je schrijft wat in je zit. Jouw verhalen en gedichten, je schrijft ze van je af. Je vertrouwt het blad je diepste geheimen toe. Maar wat als jij je verhalen toevertrouwt aan iemand anders dan een vel papier? We transformeren het individuele schrijfproces naar een collectief proces. We gaan van ‘ik schrijf dus ik ben’, naar ‘wij schrijven dus wij zijn’. Collectief schrijven betekent ook collectief luisteren.

Naast schrijven, leren we dus ook onze gedichten voordragen en hoe we naar elkaars gedichten kunnen luisteren.

But what if you entrust your stories to someone else than a sheet of paper? We transform the individual writing process into a collective one. We go from 'I write therefore I am' to 'we write therefore we are'.

N Dit jaar nodigen we je uit om de tentoonstelling op andere manieren te ontdekken.

Naast onze reguliere en familierondleidingen, bieden we deze editie o.a. ook een ontspannende blokpauze en slow down momenten aan. Tijdens ons ‘Blokske Om’ loodsen we de blokkende studenten door de highlights van de expo om te eindigen in het STUKcafé. Wij trakteren het eerste rondje! Bij het ‘slow down’ moment is onthaasten het sleutelwoord. We focussen op een bepaald werk in de expo en gaan in gesprek over de kijkervaring en het werk.

Daarnaast kan je gebruik maken van audioguides met audiodescriptie bij je expobezoek of een rondleiding reserveren met een tolk Vlaamse Gebarentaal.

KHALED BARAKEH °1976, SYRIË N Khaled Barakeh is een Syrische conceptuele kunstenaar en cultureel activist. Gedreven door sociale onrechtvaardigheid, benadert Barakeh zijn creatieve praktijk als een instrument voor maatschappelijke verandering; hij manipuleert alledaagse visuele en culturele toetsstenen om stagnerende machtsstructuren zichtbaar te maken en te ondermijnen. ELLIOTT ERWITT °1928, PARIJS, FRANKRIJK N De specifieke fotografiestijl van de in Parijs geboren, in Amerika getogen fotograaf Elliott Erwitt wordt gekenmerkt door openhartige en humoristische zwart-wit beelden. Erwitt begon als tiener in Los Angeles met het fotograferen van huwelijksfeesten.

PETER AERS N Peter Aers studeerde filosofie in Gent en Genève, en theater in Brussel. Zijn artistieke praktijk bevindt zich op de grenzen van performance, participatie en reflectie. Since 2014 he explores the relationship between the individual and the community in a tetralogy of conversational performances named Everything Depends On How A Thing Is Thought. The dialogue as a work of art, with in its centre a not always visible web of conversations and mutual influences, is at the core of his artistic process. ERIKA SPREY N Erika Sprey studeerde literatuurwetenschap en cultural studies aan de UvA te Amsterdam en haalde haar graduaat filosofie met een Fulbright en HSP beurs filosofie aan Columbia University in New York.

Vanaf 2010 was ze in Amsterdam werkzaam als freelance onderzoeker, curator en eindredacteur. Erika woont en werkt momenteel in Brussel als praktisch filosofe, gespreksbegeleider en facilitator van groepsprocessen. Ze is betrokken in lokaal en internationaal activisme en begeleidt participatieve kunst- en designprojecten. Erika is getraind in verschillende gesprekstechnieken en het begeleiden van opstellingen

KRIS VAN OUDENHOVE N Kris Van Oudenhove is beeldend kunstenaar, scenograaf en vormgever. Hij genoot een opleiding tot meester in de beeldende kunsten en beeldhouwen aan Luca School of Arts Gent en volgde een postgraduaat scenografie in Antwerpen. Hij is voornamelijk werkzaam als décor-­ lichtontwerper voor theater en dans.

Daarnaast werkt hij ook projecten uit voor circus (Cie Katoen) en straattheater (Cirqumstanzia, Puurlain).

Verder is hij ontwerper en uitvoerend kunstenaar bij tentoonstellingen, interieurs en maakt hij rekwisieten. In samenwerking met scenografe Melissa Mabesoone bouwde hij het decor van The Pain of Others.

Samen met Haider Al Timimi trekt hij de artistieke lijnen van gezelschap Kloppend Hert en maakt hij deel uit van het artistiek platform Jong Gewei in Gent. Hij is gastdocent aan Kunsthogeschool RITCS en geeft les aan de Kunsthumaniora Brussel.

E Bart Capelle works since 2002 as a freelance dramaturg, mostly in theater and performance.
