RECAPTURING BIBLICAL HOPE IN A FEARFUL AGE Perhaps the most remarkable thing about our present moment in America is the lack of hope. The daily reports of terrorist attacks, racial violence, political turmoil or economic collapse seem to have shaken our confidence that things will get better. Strikingly, even our political candidates are appealing to fear more than to something like “morning in America” or “change we can believe in.” Hope is now for gullible folks who believe empty campaign promises. I suspect we all know people who see Christian hope as a particularly advanced case of wishful thinking and irresponsible escapism.

The striking thing about hope in the New Testament, though, is how firmly its feet are planted in this world.

After all, Christian hope is not focused on escape from the reality of this creation but on its fulfillment in resurrection bodies and a new creation. “Creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God,” as the apostle Paul says! Such hope is not wishful thinking rooted in denial, but confident expectation based on the fact that Jesus himself has already been raised from the dead. What happened to him will happen to us if we believe in him.

This is important because it is easy to view this present world as substantial and real in sharp contrast to an ethe-

real heaven outside of time and space. In fact, the reverse is more nearly the case, portrayed most brilliantly in The Great Divorce, by C. S. Lewis. There, the ghosts who dwell in the lower regions may take a bus ride to heaven (and stay, if they like), where a leaf has the weight of a boulder and streams are like flowing marble. The ghosts simply aren’t real enough for that world.

Christians need to recapture such a biblical imagination and confidence. In the face of cynicism and fear, we of all people must keep a firm hold on hope. Christ has died!

Christ has risen! Christ will come again! Jesus is Lord, not Caesar–and certainly not the presidential candidate from either party. That reality is already present in its fullness in the resurrected person of Christ, who will one day come and extend his kingdom to earth. That is the true substance and basis of our hope.

To affirm the fundamental reality of Christ’s kingdom is not to deny the reality of our present world. It is rather to establish it. I think of that astounding passage in 1 Corinthians 6 where Paul refers to our future bodily existence

to undergird his warning against sexual immorality. Because these bodies will be raised, Paul says, you must be careful what you do with them now. The very solidity and substance of our future existence gives weight to our present actions.

Thus, far from encouraging passivity or escapism, a truly Christian hope empowers God-honoring action in this world. What we do in life is shaped not just by a clear-eyed understanding of our present fallen situation, but also by our sense of the coming kingdom. Such hopeful engagement in the world is not easy. It requires constant attention to God’s promises for the future and provision for the present, together with careful study of the world in which we live.

The Study Center is providing some opportunities for exploring an engaged Christian hope this semester. As usual, we kicked off the semester with a lecture aimed at first-year students (though others were also welcome).

Our Director of Undergraduate Ministries for Women, Lane Cowin, spoke on how to pursue our ambitions from a Christian perspective. At about the same time

I began teaching my fall class on God and Vocation, in which I explore our human vocation as representatives of God’s goodness and power in every part of life, including our jobs.

We have also invited a few special guests to our building this fall. Kate Harris, former Executive Director of the Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation, and Culture, will speak on women and vocation. A week before the election, U.Va. Professor of Politics John Owen will discuss three Christian views of political engagement.

Then, on Thursday, November 17, Christianity Today’s executive editor Andy Crouch will place a capstone on our semester with a lecture on redeeming power.

What our culture needs is men and women, young and old, who combine the deep knowledge of politics, media, or business (or any other field of learning) gained at a place like the University of Virginia with a deep conviction that in big ways or small we may witness to the coming kingdom of Christ, combatting the fear and cynicism of our age with a distinctively Christian hope.

THE GOSPEL NARRATIVE IN AMERICAN LITERATURE A Six-Week Study with Dr. Vigen Guroian

by Larisa Aleksandrov, Engagement & Program Assistant larisa@studycenter.net When troubles come and suffering rears its ugly head, it’s easy to resign ourselves to the burdens they bring. The Study Center affirms that, as children of God, we are not destined to drift along in futility and the oppression of sin until we die, only then experiencing freedom in heaven. We have the opportunity—and are actually designed—to taste real freedom, peace, and joy here on earth. As the psalmist writes: “I remain confident of this; I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (Psalm 27:13).

As we acknowledge God as a living God, involved in the present age, it is our privilege to both receive His goodness and also participate in bringing it about in the world around us by His grace.

The voices of this age who confidently confirm both the present experience and future expectation of God’s goodness are refreshing to our ears. Two such voices are from 20th century American writers Wendell Berry and Flannery O’Connor.

This fall, former U.Va. Religious Studies professor Vigen Guroian is leading a sixweek reading group at the Study Center on the works of these writers. While these author’s styles are strikingly different, Guroian is exploring the underlying vision found in both their writings—namely, our relationships to heaven, earth,

and eternity, revealed through the presence of God in His tangible creation.

God’s magnificent story, from creation to restoration.

Vigen Guroian, who is a Virginia alumnus himself, joined U.Va. as a Professor of Religious Studies in 2009. Over the course of his teaching career, he has authored more than ten books, covering such topics as Eastern Orthodox traditions and his experience of God through his favorite activity: gardening. In fact, Professor Guroian taught my favorite class I ever took as a student at U.Va.: “Religion in Children’s Literature.”

While reading through children’s classics such as Pinocchio and Wind in the Willows, he led us to consider how these stories shape our moral imaginations. Each discussion was an invitation to experience the stories with child-like delight and wonder, and we ended the semester inspired to experience our own stories with that same wonder.

In their writings, both Berry and O’Connor draw primarily from their earthly experiences. They do not present their Christian visions of our relationship to heaven and earth abstractly. Instead, they explore it through engagement with the physical world, through concrete people and places. Our hope is for students to look up from Berry’s poems and O’Connor’s short stories with eyes to see the natural world as one that God has created for our good and His glory. With this amended orientation, students can engage with nature under the gracious truth that God is making all things new, including our relationship with creation, through the work of Jesus Christ.

While students often analyze O’Connor’s Southern literature or Berry’s nationalistic works in their English courses at the University, Vigen’s group allows students to analyze these writings in light of the Gospel, alongside their Christian peers.

POWER, AMBITION, VOCATION: How the Gospel Frees Us to Take ‘Meaningful Risk’

For many years, the Study Center developed a “theme” for the year—an overarching idea around which all of our educational programs would cohere. We stopped doing this because we saw how many different things we wanted to communicate to students, ranging from relationships to soul care, from sororities to Sabbath, and most significantly during their time in college, how their study and work mattered to God. Yet as we look at this Fall semester, we realize that a theme has unwittingly emerged. We find ourselves having many of the same conversations with various students, so our events respond to that need.

With the help of a grant from the Lilly Endowment’s Theological Exploration of Vocation initiative three years ago, we began to organize more of our ministry around the topic of vocation, and we quickly learned a few things. First, we learned that vocation is incomplete when narrowed to the sphere of work alone. We want to help students think about their human calling in light of their whole life, including work, family, church, and friendships—all of which are places we’re called to represent God to the world. Second, we learned that vocation involves a response to the manifold gifts God has given us and to the opportunities open to us in the world. What’s more, we learned that our students are not comfortable with how much opportunity and privilege— let’s also say power—they have. The former we’ve dealt with in many settings, but perhaps most comprehensively in the seminary class taught by Bill Wilder each fall. The latter insight has led us to focus many of our fall semester programs on the disoriented and complex relationship between power, ambition, and vocation.

As a capstone to a semester chock full of conversations on ambition and politics, we’ve partnered with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship to invite Christianity Today editor and author Andy Crouch to speak on “Redeeming the Gift of Power.”

In 2013, Crouch wrote an excellent book on the topic called Playing God, about how power is rooted in creation and can be stewarded for good. Now he’s expanded on that work with a little book entitled Strong & Weak: Embracing a Life of Love, Risk & True Flourishing. The idea behind the book is simple: true flourishing comes from being both strong and weak, from both auPAG E 8 S S T U DY C E N T E R NEW SLETTER FALL 2 0 1 6

thority and vulnerability. We tend to think of authority and vulnerability as poles along a straight line. Either we possess more authority, or we are more vulnerable. Crouch breaks us out of this either/or choice with a both/and alternative. He argues that it is possible to hold the capacity for meaningful action (authority) alongside the possibility of exposure to meaningful risk (vulnerability).

Now, I must confess that I’ve always been suspicious of the category of books you might call “leadership literature.” There are so many books out there offering easy advice with easy steps. Crouch’s book, at first glance, might feel like it fits that genre. It’s simply written, offering one easy-to-grasp idea on authority. However, here’s where Crouch’s work stands out.

Crouch names sin for what it is and confronts us with our own idolatry. We are “bent in the direction of privilege,” seeking to control our world and insulate ourselves from any of its brokenness. This is not a problem we ourselves can fix.

Crouch writes, “We will not restore the world to its intended flourishing by impressive feats of self-improvement.” The restoration of this world flows from Jesus. Only Jesus. He is the one who possessed all authority, through whom all things were created, and yet he emptied himself, in the pattern of Philippians 2, taking the form of a servant. True transformation comes only as we accept Jesus’ restoration and seek to be conformed to his image.

This book meets our students in their questioning. Andy writes to those who have authority, or to those younger people who bear a measure of authority now by virtue of their gifts, the privilege of their upbringing, or the profound opportunity that a world-class education a place like U.Va. affords.

Many of our students will likely hold great authority just a few years from now. Our unwillingness to confront the power we have hampers us from allowing Jesus to transform us into his image. His call to us is not necessarily to abandon that power, but to embrace risk alongside it. What might that risk look like? For one thing, it might mean simply being open as a follower of Jesus. I work with graduate students and every year I meet with entering students who are fearful to reveal to their advisor, lab mates, or others that they are Christian. That fear is not unfounded. There is a risk that they might be judged or stereotyped, though the risk is lower than most anticipate.

But I am reminded of Ken Elzinga, who speaks about when he first became a Professor of Economics at U.Va., and had to affirm Romans 1:16 within himself: “I am not ashamed of the

gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” Ken, as a new professor many years ago, took a risk. What fruit it has borne over 40 years of teaching!

Another risk Crouch mentioned to me in a recent email is to think about how we spend our money. I’m reminded here of an engineering student who made a commitment to himself to live only on the amount he received as a stipend in grad school, even after he graduated. He knew that his life was comfortable and he didn’t lack for anything. He went on to work at a big technology research firm, making much more money than he ever had before. He didn’t change his lifestyle, and he was able to give generously in a way that is difficult for most of us to consider. Perhaps we might also be called to take risks in where and how we live. I’ve witnessed this in the lives of Graduate Christian Fellowship alumni this very week. Another couple who recently graduated just moved into a new house this summer with a basement apartment. One day the wife was praying for the conflict in the Middle East, and found herself praying that God would bring a Syrian family into their life.

God answered that prayer. Days later, another grad student emailed a few of us saying that he was trying to help a Syrian family seeking asylum in their move to Charlottesville, and would we be willing to help. That family arrives today and will be moving into that basement.

This can all seem overwhelming. Am I saying that we all need to go shout that we’re Christians while giving away two-thirds of our income and taking in refugees? Not at all, though God may indeed call some to that. Each of us has our own calling from God. Crouch challenges us that, in Jesus, we’re free to use the power and opportunity we have in new, creative, and fruitful ways. We’re free to take meaningful risks because we are secure in Jesus, knowing that his resurrection makes sure our future.

ELZINGA RESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM LIVE IN COMMUNITY. GROW IN FAITH & KNOWLEDGE. SERVE OTHERS. The Elzinga Residential Scholars Program guides students through a year of living and worshiping with other Christians, learning from Scripture, and applying the Christian Faith to all of life. In addition to living in their respective houses (males in the Study Center basement apartment and females in the Yellow House next door), these students worship together and eat dinner as a group once a week. They attend a seminary course, discussion group, and various lectures at the Study Center throughout the year. Finally, they are encouraged to serve their fellow students by partnering with the Study Center’s outreach ministires.

“I don’t think that I fully experienced the gift of rest at U.Va. until my third year, when I became a member of the Elzinga Residential Scholars Program. I applied somewhat on a whim, caught in the scramble of trying to find next year’s housing. I feared the amount of time and work required by the program would be too much for my already bursting-at-the-seams schedule, but I decided to apply anyway. What I found (which was admittedly surprising to prideful, busy, third-year me) was that the commitment required to that community paved the way for a rest in God for which I was so thirsty. I remember feeling like I could breathe and be myself in the ERSP community. I didn’t have to prove myself there; I just had to show up and be loved.

Yes, the program required reading; yes, it required my every Thursday night and more; but most importantly, it required me to be present in my community and to be present and active in my relationship with the Lord. Now, a few years removed, I see the impact of the ERSP on my life as much bigger. I feel so present and at rest in my church community, my small group, and most importantly, in my marriage, in large part because of how the program disciplined me in communal Christian life.”
