WHAT ABOUT WORK? Vocational Discernment at the Study Center

It is easy for Christians to wonder about the value of what they do in the world. Didn’t God curse work in the fall, a reality that we all experience on a daily basis at work or at home? Doesn’t the New Testament oppose grace and faith to works, something many of us feel in our struggle to accept God’s grace and forgiveness apart from our own doing? But then God’s people are regularly exhorted to “do good” and to “good works” in Scripture. And, of course, there’s the Protestant work ethic, which reminds us of the high place of work in some Christian traditions and, indeed, our larger culture. Granted, that ethic can lead to the kind of performance-driven perfectionism that is rampant at a place like U.Va. So how should we think about all the things we DO in the world? What is the proper place of work (in the broad sense of whatever we do and not just in the workplace) in our lives?

In many ways this is a question that the Study Center has been addressing since its inception in the 1970s.

Still, the past year has seen an increasing focus on a Christian view of work at the Center. Extensive staff discussions on work and rest, a Saturday Seminar at the Study Center (Our Work, God’s Vocation) and an Adult Education class at a local church (Work, Works and Good Works) have all contributed to bring a theology of vocation into

focus for ourselves and our students. Along the way, the Study Center was among twenty-one campus ministries (including several study centers) to receive a grant from the Lilly Endowment for the “Theological Discernment of Vocation.” This generous gift ($100,000 over five years) will enable the Study Center to extend our vocational focus to students through reading groups, major speakers, personal conversations and a vocational fair. It also means that I will be teaching a brand new, semester-long course on vocation this fall to Study Center residents, recent college graduates (in the Trinity and Christ Church Fellows programs) and local community members. For me, this class is the culmination of many years thinking about the place of Christ and his church in the world, specifically applied now to the question of vocation and supported, in part, by the Lilly Endowment.

So what is it that we hope to communicate in our teaching and conversations about our work in the world?

The first thing to be said is that we want our students to think vocationally. By this we don’t mean that we want them to be thinking first of all about their career choices, though eventually that comes into it. Vocation means calling, so we want our students first to consider God’s call to worship him and reflect his goodness into the world. I often speak of our priestly vocation (or calling) to worship God and our royal vocation to represent his goodness and power to the world. We are a royal priesthood and it is within that larger calling that all of our

work, including career choices, should be understood.

This first point leads to a second. If part of our calling in the world is to be agents of God’s goodness, then we need to emphasize the creational goodness of work.

That is, our ability as humans to do and to build, to provide for ourselves and others, to make something of the world (as Ken Myers would put it) is a gift from God. The God of Scripture, who shares so much of himself with us in every way, allowing us to participate in his joy and his love and his glory, also calls us to participate in the extension of his goodness to the world.

He doesn’t keep all the doing and making to himself. Work is a major way we represent God to the world.

At the same time, this celebration of the creational goodness of work needs to be tempered by a frank recognition of the fall of work. Sometimes a rediscovery of the original goodness of work can lead us to neglect its danger for fallen creatures like ourselves. Just as we do with God’s other good gifts (like food or sex or beauty), we give our work a weight it cannot bear, seeking to find our significance and fulfillment in our own doing (apart from God’s). We take the gift we were meant to offer back to God in thankful worship . . . and worship that instead. Meant to be priests who worship God, not least through what we do, we find our work leading us to idolatry instead.

Meant to be rulers who act on God’s behalf, we find ourselves in one dead end after another, unable to make anything of the world. We long for fruitfulness.

Too often we find futility. To do full justice to our experience of work in this world, we must come to terms with the idolatry and futility that inevitably accompanies it in a fallen world.

Fortunately, the fall is not the end of the story. The

good news of the gospel extends even as far as human doing. Along with redemption of all else, there is the redemption of work. Here we find our Lord Christ, who paid the price for our idolatry (on the cross) and who redeemed us from our futility (in the resurrection). Here we find the one who is the true Priest and the true King, restoring us to the kind of worship and the kind of fruitfulness God always intended for us, in a way that is completely dependent on grace. As Paul puts it in Ephesians 2, our salvation is “the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one can boast.” At the same time the creational purpose for our doing in the world is restored: we “were created in Christ Jesus for good works” (2:8-10). In this way we are made once again to be God’s agents for good in the world (in our families, churches, communities and jobs), with the hope of full and final deliverance one day from the sin of idolatry and the curse of futility.

So what does all of this mean for our students at the University of Virginia, many of whom are driven (for good and bad reasons) to do and perform and make something of the world? That, of course, is the question we’ll be addressing in many of its different dimensions across the breadth of our programs, conversations and counseling here at the Study Center. For the long answer you’ll need to join us for some of that, perhaps in person or perhaps through our online resources. We hope you will.

In every case, though, and whatever the specific event or conversation, we pray that God will work in us and in our students a deep sense of His calling on our lives, a great hope in the midst of futility, a deep repentance from the sin of idolatry, and a renewed commitment to worshiping Him in all we do.

POWER PLAY Examining the Gift of Power

What does power have to do with vocation? The two might not seem related at first. We tend to immediately think of power as a bad thing. Lord Acton’s famous saying, “power corrupts,” might well be the first association that comes to our minds. But did power begin with the fall?

These are questions we’re addressing in our vocational teaching at the Center for Christian Study, including the new fall course on “God and Vocation.” Along the way we have been recommending a fine new book entitled Playing God: Redeeming the Gift of Power, by Andy Crouch, the editor of Christianity Today. This fall we plan to host a reading group co-sponsored with Reformed University Fellowship.

Crouch helps us place power within the overall biblical story, beginning not at the fall but at creation. By doing so we discover that power is a gift, rooted in creation and tied to our calling (or “vocation”) to bear God’s image in the world. Work started out as good and so did power, although the fall introduces injustice and idolatry into our use of power. Reckoning fully with the created goodness of power means that to understand our vocation fully we must first understand the gifts God has given to enable us to carry out our calling. God called us to steward His creation on His behalf. He also gave us the gift of power, which is the ability to do that work.

This theological truth has direct bearing on our students’ lives. U.Va. students have tremendous power. They have the power of a world-class education. They have the power to choose what career they want to pursue. They have the power that comes with the network they’ll build here. However, because students tend to see power as inherently negative, they also tend to ignore the power and privilege they have. This neglect of power is not unique to students. We all do it. Yet when Christians choose to disregard our power we miss out on two opportunities: 1) Thankfulness. How we can give thanks to God for the full goodness of His creation if we don’t allow ourselves

to recognize what He has given us? 2) Stewardship. As with all of God’s gifts, we are called to use them for the sake of the world, for the good of other people, in love.

This is what it takes to “redeem power,” as Crouch’s subtitle puts it.

How then do we use the power we have to make room for the flourishing of others? We share it. True power, according to Crouch, multiplies when it is shared. Think of teaching someone a skill. For example: I referee ice hockey games as a hobby, so I am a pretty good ice skater.

When I teach someone else how to skate, I don’t lose my ability. I’ve shared my “power” with another person, but I haven’t lost any. This may seem insignificant, but take another example from our ministry. We’ve realized at the Study Center that we can multiply our effectiveness by expanding our intern program. We are giving responsibility over to students, but the result is a net increase of power: the students gain valuable work experience and the benefit of mentorship, and it also frees up staff time to undertake more student ministry. We look forward to imagining with students how to live this out in their careers, in their neighborhoods, in families, in all of the areas of life into which God places us.

“Playing God” is just one of the four small groups that will be exploring the concept of vocation this fall. We’ll also host a group led by U.Va. Professor John Owen on “Politics & Theology” (reading Oliver O’Donovan’s Desire of the Nations), a group on “Psychology & Spiritual Growth” (reading Anatomy of the Soul, by Curt Thompson), and a reading group on For the Life of the World, by Alexander Schmemann, considering how the church’s worship shapes our vocation. SHARING THE GOOD WORK Vocational Development on Both Sides of the Cap + Gown

Folks ask me regularly what I like about working at the Study Center. Each morning as my feet hit the bottom steps of the stair tower, I feel a building excitement about the day ahead.

After twelve years of this morning ritual, I have discovered that this reaction has little to do with an unrealistic, rosy notion of a problem-free day. Rather it is anchored by a hopefulness of what the Lord will do through this ministry and in the lives of the people inside this building.

Part of this excitement has to do with who I get to work with every day – the staff. They are an amazing bunch of servant-hearted leaders who faithfully love students.

Their steady presence has been a wonderful constant in the midst of a continually transitioning student population. We have weathered many changes together and, along the way, they have become dear friends.

Each one has arrived in response to the new and changing demands of a growing ministry, and each one has been uniquely equipped for his or her individual ministry calling here. As if providing the right people was not enough, each time a staffing need has arisen, God has provided the funding for it through the generosity of Study Center alumni, parents and friends.

This year is no exception. In a few weeks, the Study Center staff will greet students with some new, yet familiar, faces in the mix. After watching student leadership programs develop at the Study Center for almost a decade, we began exploring the possibility of continuing this vocational development with our recent graduates. With the full support of the staff and Board, this idea turned into a strategic initiative beginning this academic year. We wanted to create a post-graduate opportunity for those who wish to explore careers in college and non-profit ministry.

Through the sponsorship of the Lilly Endowment, we are able to match each new staff member with a Study Center Director who will provide ministry training, mentoring and professional development. We are very excited to make room for our alumni to pour back into the ministry that supported them while they were students.

Liz Cosgro (Curry, ’14), one of our undergraduate Hospitality Interns, has joined our staff ranks as our Facilities Assistant. She will be working here part-time while she completes her student teaching and fifth year in the New employees Jaclyn Stokes, Keri Kerns, Curry School of Lindsay Goodrich and Liz Cosgro (from left Education. Liz’s can-do attitude combined with her ability to fix whatever is broken and notice anything that is askew (thanks to summers spent turning over rental units for a local management company) has been fun to watch. Her timing was perfect, coming along at just the right time to fill Kara Schrum’s very hard-to-fill shoes. Kara served us faithfully for two years before moving to California in August. Her husband Ethan, a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture, will begin his teaching appointment at Azusa Pacific University this fall.

Lindsay Goodrich (A&S, ’13), one of our student leaders who majored in Religious Studies, has returned to us after a year in El Paso, TX. While there, she worked in ESL education, youth ministry and community development as a Border Fellow with Cuidad Nueva Community Outreach. She joined the staff in August as the Undergraduate Ministries Intern for the 2014-15 school year. This is a newly created position that enables us to better respond to the needs of a growing student population. Lindsay will work 20 hours a week alongside our Undergraduate Ministry Directors, Lane Cowin and Jay McCabe, in relational ministry to new students. She will be helping us with outreach events like our Move-In Day Lunch as well as inviting new students into the Study Center community and walking alongside them throughout the year.

Jaclyn Stokes (A&S, ’13) is stepping up to the plate again after pinch-hitting this past academic year as our postgraduate Communications and Administration Intern.

Her organizational giftings, attention to detail and love for “getting the word out” to students were invaluable while our Director of Communications Ashley Wooten was out on maternity leave last fall and subsequently moved to a reduced schedule in the spring. Jaclyn transitioned to a newly created Communications and Program Assistant role in July as Ashley transitioned into being a stay-at-home mom. Keri Kerns, a 2013 Wheaton College and 2014 Trinity Fellows alumna, was introduced to the Study Center through our seminary courses and also joined our Communications Team in July. Her academic background is in communications and her heart for people and this ministry led Keri to want to use her gifts here. Like Jaclyn, Keri is also serving as a Communications and Program Assistant.

Having freshly minted alumnae on staff is a new ministry direction for us, but investing in the vocational development of our students has long been part of our mission.

For the past three years we’ve been shifting responsibilities and putting structures in place to more effectively mentor and develop student leaders. One of the ways we do this is through our internship program, which currently employs 12 undergraduate students each year.

Three directors on staff – Lane, Jay and myself – meet with interns one-on-one, lead project management meetings and provide training and mentoring support.

This program has been rewarding to witness as we see ourselves as preparing the next generation coming behind us. Part of our time to do this has been sponsored through a five-year Lilly Endowment grant awarded to the Study Center last fall.

Last May, eight of these students graduated and headed out to begin making their way in the world. It was a joy to work with them throughout their internship year as they wrestled with the meta questions surrounding the looming and difficult question: “What’s next?” Now, to our delight, we get to watch them take those next steps in faith. Three have begun ministry positions in college outreach – one here, one with Reformed University Fellowship at Emory University and another with Intervarsity at Randolph Macon College. Two have entered the business field, and one is taking a year to participate in the Capitals Fellow Program. Another has begun her nursing career in U.Va.’s I.C.U. while her classmate begins her field work with International Justice Mission in Cambodia. Still another is exploring opportunities in the culinary arts. It is bittersweet to see students leave our house, but we rejoice in the knowledge that each one is walking in faith and earnestly seeking his or her calling.

As we watch former students leave and post-graduates return, our hearts are full. It is a humbling experience to be allowed to help shape these young men and women into leaders in Christ’s service. But this is not something we can do alone. We have been richly blessed by the support of parents and alumni as well as the Board of Directors and the Lilly Foundation to be able invest into their vocational development for this moment in time.

Whether through undergraduate internships or our new post-graduate positions, we are eager to see how God is shaping our students and leading them in their various callings.

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY

Transitioning into college is a significant adjustment for students and parents alike. Twice in the last four years my husband, Scott (‘88), and I faced an exciting yet somewhat nerve-wracking status: being parents of First Years.

Amidst the typical anxieties that come with sending a child off to college for the first time, we deeply desired that our children would quickly find Christian fellowship at the University, and we sought counsel accordingly. Veteran parents encouraged us to register to attend the Center for Christian Study’s Move-In Day Lunch and we soon found that an air-conditioned place to eat lunch and rest on a hot, hectic day was truly a gift.

In addition to graciously providing physical comforts, they also shored us up emotionally and introduced us to an abundance of opportunities for involvement in U.Va.’s Christian ministries. Our children, along with other wide-eyed First Years, were welcomed personally, finally able to connect faces to the names that had been reaching out to them all summer, and were issued specific invitations to join the Christian community on Grounds.

The students, and later the parents, were addressed by Professor Elzinga, who blessed us with his perspective as a Christian faculty member and with wisdom from his many years teaching at U.Va. He encouraged the students to take note of the people sitting in that room because they would become their classmates, life-long friends and maybe even their future spouses. Little did we know all of this would become true for our daughter, Adair (‘14).

The Center for Christian Study became a homeaway-from-home for our children and many of their friends, not to mention a literal home for our sonin-law who actually lived in the building for three years. Its central location is convenient, but that’s not the essence of what makes the Study Center a home; rather, it’s a place where students gather to become a family and can always find a listening ear, a celebratory hug and a fervent prayer. Sadly, during Adair’s time at the University, two classmates tragically lost their lives. The Study Center was where students grieved as they were welcomed to cry, talk and seek the Lord’s help together in those difficult days. I’m sure many parents were blessed by this support as well. Scott and I certainly were. We find great comfort in knowing that the advice and teaching offered at the Study Center is

grounded in the truth of the Bible. Whether they were rejoicing, weeping or just going about their day, the Study Center was there to care for our children and provide the support they needed. The staff even saved the day by inviting Adair to share their offices when there was a shortage of places on Grounds to complete her job interviews via Skype. Sounds like home away from home to me!

Students are not the only ones welcomed into the Study Center family. The staff readily create space for parents and families to come alongside them in ministry. I, along with other Richmond-area moms like Sally Jesensky, Elizabeth Cross and Beth Shefferly, have enjoyed loading down our cars with food and heading west on I-64 to help facilitate a family reunion of sorts, otherwise known as Exam Snacks. Each semester, the Center manages to add a spark to the dreaded exam week as it offers a seemingly unending supply of goodies for students. What a joy it has been to watch the line of students weaving out the door, up the sidewalk and around the building, waiting for a bit of home and fuel to get them through exams. I always look forward to greeting my children’s friends, and there are always new ones to meet. It warms my heart to represent the hundreds of parents who have joined with the Study Center to make this event possible.

Now we can speak as parents of three Wahoos. Our son, John, is a rising second year and Adair and her new husband, William Barber, graduated in May and recently moved into their new home in Arlington, Virginia. All three of our children have taken advantage of the many opportunities the Center for Christian Study offers, from weekly Bible studies and special guest speakers to Exam Snacks, quiet study spots and the endless coffee supply. In addition, Adair and William both benefited greatly from participating in yet another facet of the Study Center family: the Elzinga Residential Scholars Program, Adair for one year and William for three. Adair recently commented, “This ministry of the Study Center was a transforming experience as I learned the importance and blessing of Christian community.” The Study Center’s consistent provision of nourishment, physically, relationally and

spiritually, was a blessing all three have depended on for true sustenance.

The Lord has faithfully used the Center for Christian Study in our family for two generations. It all started when Scott lived in the attic and participated in the Darden Christian Fellowship. Never did we dream that our future children and son-in-law would one day follow in his footsteps as a part of this wonderful ministry. Scott’s attic abode is now office space, so William, our son-in-law, made his home in the basement and our daughter lived in the Yellow House next door.

How grateful we are that the Center continues to reach out to students with truth and grace, and that our children have especially benefited from being grafted into this family tree. We have experienced first-hand the fruitful ministry of the Center for Christian Study and are so very thankful to have been asked to serve on the Board of Directors and participate in what the Lord is doing in this very special place.

Amy Ziegler and her husband, Scott (Darden, 1988), have been actively involved in the ministries of the Center for Christian Study over the last four years. While their children, Adair and John, attended and even helped lead many of our undergraduate ministries, Amy and Scott have partcipated in our parents’ ministries and volunteer opportunites.

This year, Amy will serve her first term on the Study Center’s Board of Directors.
