Ah, summer – said to be the warmest of the four seasons, but this summer has been downright HOT! But even in the heat of the day, it’s been wonderful to spend time with family, cooling off with dips in the pool and enjoying the long days. And with the days growing longer, you’ll likely want to embrace the endless summer sun both inside and outside your home. Lucky for you, we have the best surroundings to enjoy it all in our Peralta Hills area. From the rural feel of our streets to the plush and unique estates that line them, we have it all right here. According to the latest trends, our real estate values are rising. It’s a great time to live in Anaheim. Jolynn and I would like to welcome our longtime friends, Bill and Cathy Manos, to the neighborhood. We have known the Manos family for years and are delighted they found a little piece of heaven on Peralta Hills Drive to settle into. On Independence Day, we were so honored to represent our Peralta Hills neighborhood in the 4th of July Parade. The fireworks were truly spectacular! Speaking of spectacular – mark your calendar for the next PHEIA Gala - September 14th! I can’t wait to see the lovely home of James and Jael Tanti transformed into a Saturday Night Fever dance hall with a disco theme! I challenge every one of you to a shimmy off with the “Ace” Band. The evening starts at 6pm with lots of fun, food, and some pretty fancy getups! We are certain to have some wonderful auction items again this year as well. Jolynn and I will be offering up a trip with us to New York – we hope you will consider putting something together to donate as well. I look forward to seeing you all around the neighborhood! All the best, Patrick

Brazil/Argentina Trip

by Niles Guichet

My wife, Emily, and I and the Cramers bid and each won a week in the Wildvank’s Brazil beach home at the Peralta Hills Gala in 2008. After four years, Richard Cramer said let’s take this trip together. So in February we did just that. We started with four wonderful days in Buenos Aires, Argentina, then took a flight to Porto Alegre, Brazil and drove to the Wildvank beach home.

Niles & Emily Guichet, Gail Jiles, Veronica Nogeur, Eric & Terri Guichet, Mary & Richard Cramer

Our fantastic week right on the beach was filled with Brazilian barbecues, caipirinhas on the beach, in the home & everywhere else. It was too much fun! We took another flight to Rio where we met up with the Wildvanks for a wild time during the world famous Carnival. What a night! We went to bed at 4am! The next day, the Wildvanks planned and toured all day with us in Rio. Which of course included more caipirinhas. Thanks to Roseli and Craig Wildvank for an unforgettable experience!

Neighborhood Watch

by Sheila Ponce

Dear Peralta Hills Neighbors, Co-Chairs: We have moved into the summer months which means James Jekums & Sheila Ponce some of you will be taking extended vacations and your homes 714.348.0930 714. 931.2577 will be unattended while you’re gone. I want to encourage you to notify the post office and to let your close neighbors know of your absence so they can keep an eye out for your property and be aware of any strange vehicles parked in the area.

I contacted Sgt. Janocha with the Anaheim Police Department and asked how Peralta Hills was doing as far as criminal activity, and I’m happy to report we have been quite crime free! He did mention that residential burglaries were up in the canyon area so be alert while driving in our neighborhood. Have a safe summer! Page 2

How to Protect Your Pets from Coyotes by Raza Kitsigianis

Below are a number of things you can do to prevent your small pet from being attacked by a coyote. 1. Keep small pets (cats, small dogs, and other pets) indoors from dusk until dawn. Or keep pets in a coyote-proof yard, area or cage from dusk until dawn. 2. Install a fence or convert your fence to prevent coyotes from entering your yard. 3. Feed your pets indoors. Or if you feed them outdoors, do so during the day and never leave pet food out at night. 4. Make sure trash is not left outside in bags and that all trash cans have secure lids with locking mechanisms. Secure the trash cans to a fence or wall with rope or elastic cord so the trash can cannot be tipped over. 5. Install motion sensor lights in your back yard and around your house. 6. Don’t leave fruit, berries or compost on the ground or uncovered. 7. Don’t overflow birdfeeders. Hang them high or in areas that are not accessible to coyotes. 8. NEVER feed coyotes. 9. Clear brush and vegetation to remove habitat for small animals that may attract coyotes and to eliminate areas where coyotes can hide while stalking their prey. 10. Always keep pets on a leash when walking in parks, forest areas or in residential areas.

Can coyotes jump fences or walls?

Yes, coyotes use their front paws on the top of a fence and use their hind legs to propel themselves over the barrier. Coyotes are good diggers and often will dig under fences as well.

Do coyotes attack people?

Yes, coyotes have attacked people. It is not common, but there have been more attacks reported in recent years due to the urbanization and population growth of cities that border wildlife areas. Coyote attacks on humans and pets have increased within the past five years in California. Normally coyotes are timid and shy away from people, but they have been known to attack as well.

What should I do if I see a coyote?

You want to harass or scare the coyote so it fears you and leaves. You can do this by shouting or yelling at the coyote. Wave your arms and throw rocks at the coyote if necessary. You can make loud noises by clapping your hands, blowing a whistle, knocking two boards together, using a car horn, or other noise making device. Page 3

A Long Awaited Victory

by Joan Schlund

Scotland’s Andy Murray is the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years since Fred Perry won in 1936. Murray is also the first Brit to win Wimbledon in shorts since was the custom in 1936 to play tennis in long trousers. Andy grew up in Dunblane, Scotland where his mother was a top tennis player. She was most responsible for putting a racket in his hand and shaping his game. The game played at Wimbledon earlier this year against Novak Djokovic, the worlds number one, will long be remembered. Playing with a calm that was lacking in previous matches, Murray knocked off Djokovic in a straight sets match that lasted over three hours thus ending a cloud of anxiety that has hung over Great Britain. Britain’s Royal Mail is to celebrate Andy Murray’s historic win by issuing commemorative stamps starting August 8th.

Mas Historica

by Lucille R. Krueger

Perhaps most of you know, before California became part of the United states it belonged to Spain. In fact, at that time, Spain held the entire southwest. When Mexico won independence from Spain, the area became part of Mexico. It wasn’t until the treaty of Guadalupe Hidgado that this area was annexed to the United States. In the early 1800’s when John Rowland immigrated to new Mexico from Ohio in order to become a citizen and own property, he was required by the Mexican government to become Catholic and be married to an “hija del pais” - a Mexican. Many “Gringos” did just this, including many names that are prominent in California history. Rowland even had to register coming into California from New Mexico at Mission San Gabriel Archangel. So he is written up in both Mexican and California history. Talk about immigration laws!

Much has been written about the Yorbas in Orange County, which is important, but part of Rancho la Puente juts down into Orange County and is a portion of the Mexican grant held by John Rowland and his partner, William Workman, who were both prominent in Los Angeles County history.

Advance & Empower Yourselves

by Francisca K. Klos

Thomas Jefferson once said, “The key to the success of America would be a concerned and active citizen.” He also said he liked “the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” I believe the dreams of our nation and our youth are great, so with these words in mind, I challenge our high school students to get involved and learn about the values and practices that are essential to be a responsible citizen in a free society. To achieve this, it is critically important that they step up and strive to gain a better understanding of the principals and ideals upon which our great nation was founded. Education and action are the key, and it will affect their future. So where do our youth begin? One place to start would be attending the Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program. This is a four day conference sponsored by Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge. Through living history, educational experiences, seminars, leadership workshops, trips to historical sites, and interaction and collaboration with their peers, students are provided with unique and life changing experiences. This fun program held at Valley Forge, helps our nation’s youth become better leaders and citizens, inspiring and empowering them to become more active in their schools, neighborhoods, churches, and homes. So high school students I challenge you to heed the words of Thomas Jefferson when he said, “Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.” This is your opportunity so ‘Act’! Orange County’s local Freedoms Foundation chapter is looking for high school juniors and seniors to participate in this valuable program. To qualify for sponsorship, interested youth will need to submit an essay on a patriotic topic (to be determined). For more information visit, www.freedomsfoundation.org. You can also contact Lane Curtis at 714.381.8393 or email lane.curtis@gmail.com for more info. Page 4

Kelly Lanphier : Artist Statement

Kelly Lanphier is an eighteen year old artist nestled in the tropical jungle of Cobblestone Lane. Being constantly immersed in this environment, Kelly has taken a strong interest in the natural world and its inhabitants. Not only is she fascinated by our underwater world, but also by the mystery of outer space. Kelly started an art business in November of 2012 selling glow-inthe-dark galaxy paintings over social media sites. This catalyzed her recognition as an artist and she had her art hung in multiple galleries, designed for a clothing company, and now is the featured artist at Buffalo Exchange in Costa Mesa. Quickly, the demand for her paintings grew and she was flooded with orders for glowing galaxies, but she needed more inspiration. In order to fuel her passion for the ocean, she became an education volunteer at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. This is where she is most inspired to make masterpieces. Through gaining knowledge about sea life and the importance of its conservation, Kelly transforms blank canvases into personal expressions that reflect her desire to change the way we see our underwater world. Her dream is to build curiosity and instill respect for the seas and space through her art. Contact Kelly at 714.745.4704 or kellylanphier@gmail.com if you are interested in purchasing her art or for more information about her work. “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” -Ryunosuke Sataro

Japanese Cuisine is the most difficult cuisine to replicate in one’s home. More than once, have I left a Japanese restaurant and within 24 hours found myself again craving the complex flavors, balance, and beauty of the cuisine. Only to find, to my dismay, that there were no cost-effective Japanese restaurants in the area. Enter Fuji Grill, the brainchild of Japanese master chef, Kazuo Ikeda. Mr. Ikeda’s goal was to bring Japanese fine dining style cuisine to a quick-service environment. And that is exactly what he has done. Fuji Grill offers an assortment of Japanese fine dining dishes without sacrificing quality or taste. Traditional items such as miso soup with little cubes of tofu are flavorful. The Seaweed Salad is a rare find. An ample portion of translucent seaweed atop a bed of mixed greens with a sesame dressing is filling and healthful. The grilled items are fresh off the grill. The teriyaki chicken featuring Chef Ikeda’s own Fuji Teriyaki Sauce is a flavorful balance of savory and sweet. The teriyaki sauce is a perfect complement to the tender strips of chicken. Teriyaki beef is truly a fine dining dish at a bargain price. The beef undergoes a special marinating process for flavor and tenderness and melts in your mouth. The Hoka Hoka chicken and Hoka Hoka beef are more robust and spicy, but also addictive. Grilled Salmon is marinated in a complex mix of spices. The portion size is generous and perfectly grilled, not overdone. Most entrees can be ordered either as Rice bowls or Sushi Bowls. The Sushi bowls are served bento box style, and are accompanied by sides of imitation crab, rice, and edamame. There are also veggie bowls. Fuji Grill offers an assortment of sushi from a Red Dragon Roll which is spicy tuna with eel on top to a Crunch Roll which consists of avocado with shrimp tempura. Eight pieces of sushi runs approximately $8.50 to $8.95. Chef Ikeda retains the tradition of balance and beauty of presentation. Many entrees are accompanied by a single piece of tempura, crispy and light. A bonus is that all of the dishes are healthful. No MSG or skin is used. Nutritional information is displayed for all items. Fuji Grill also offers catering. Fuji Grill is a delightful Try one of their bento combos for the best value. place to visit and revisit. Peralta Hills Wine Club

by Cathy Wills

The Peralta Hills Wine Club held a meeting recently at the beautiful home of Larry and Bonnie Bann. This was the second time that the Banns generously opened their home to the Peralta Hills Wine Club. About 40 neighbors were in attendance at this spectacular event. We continued with a pot luck theme for this tasting and the food was incredible. Some great wine favorites complemented the many delectable dishes. Special thanks to the Banns for supporting & hosting the Wine Club events. I am now planning the wine tasting events for the rest of 2013. Currently, I have no host volunteers for future meetings. If you are interested in hosting a wine tasting at your home, please let me know. It is helpful to know when you want to host the party & what theme you prefer. I can be reached at 714.998.3716 or at cawills@pacbell.net. We will continue with pot luck gatherings to minimize the work & expense for the hosts.

Neighborhood 4th of July Party

by Cassandra & Kyle Chen

This year’s 4th of July pool party at the Mullaheys was a blast! The kids had fun playing in the beautiful pool which had a water slide and a diving board. We also enjoyed jumping on the trampoline and bounce house, and sliding down the inflated water slide. We had tons of yummy food to eat, varying from hot dogs and hamburgers to grilled chicken and tacos. There were many games and races for the kids to compete in. There was an egg toss, wheelbarrow race, sack race, egg race, and water bucket race. The kids also collected lots of candy after they beat up several piùatas and spilled the goodies found within. Many thanks to Tim and Kim Mullahey for hosting a great party. We had lots of fun!

Bhavna Uppal Gwen Tang

In every community, there are Housewives who excel in everything they do. They are loving & dedicated wives, supermoms, outstanding professionals, and role models... Raised in an extended family in a small coal mining town in Eastern India, Bhavna Uppal grew up to value culture and tradition. Her Catholic school education expanded her knowledge, increasing awareness of the disparate cultures and societies around the globe. Further education led her to St. Bede’s College, Shimla, in the foothills of the Himalayas. There she topped the university, graduating with Honors in English, Psychology and Home Science (with an emphasis in Fashion, Interior and Textile Design). After her college studies, Bhavna travelled extensively in Europe and Asia. In 1992, she met her husband, Bob, who was visiting New Delhi from the United States. Soon thereafter, they decided to tie the knot and moved to Yorba Linda where they had three children, Prayerna, Mayher and Armaan. With encouragement from her family, she started a small home business designing wedding and formal party attire and jewelry. As the business grew, Bhavna decided to open a design studio in the Little India area of Artesia. During this time, she designed clothes for NBC’s daytime soap, Passions, as well as Fox Television’s, So You Think You Can Dance. Her outfits have also been featured in the New Year’s Rose Parade, at the Emmy Awards, and at The Bhavna Uppal Oscars. Despite her burgeoning business, Bhavna had a desire to spend more time with her growing children, so she decided to downsize her business and make it home based again. Presently, their eldest daughter, Prayerna, is a junior at UC Berkeley, where she is majoring in English and hopes to attend medical school upon graduation. Mayher, the second child, is a junior at Valencia High School. Prayerna and Mayher started RLOVE (Rising Leaders’ Organization of Volunteers for the Elderly) in 2009, a charitable organization created to increase awareness for the needs of senior citizens. Both girls are also competitive tennis players. Armaan, the youngest (and only son) is in middle school. Her husband, Bob, is involved in hospice care. Bob’s mother, Prem (who resides with them) is also active in hospice care and has been volunteering for the past 15 years. The family enjoys travelling together, music, sports, reading and sampling different cuisines. As newlyweds, Bhavna remembers their many visits to this neighborhood, wishing to one day move here with their family. The serenity and unique beauty of each home in Peralta Hills always held a charm for them. As luck would have it, the opportunity arose in 2003 and the Uppal Family became residents of Peralta Hills and have been ever since.

Gwen Tang Page 10

After a long search for their dream house, Gwen Tang and her family landed in the picturesque and tranquil neighborhood of Peralta Hills this past February. Before that, Gwen followed her husband, Jeff Liu, to the United States from Taiwan to pursue a higher education. In 1991, Gwen received her MBA and Masters in MIS from the University of Iowa, and has been working in the IT industry since 1997. She is currently employed by HP as an information specialist supporting the City of Anaheim’s account. Jeff received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iowa and is currently the Director of Software Development for Multibody Solver at Altair Engineering. Gwen is a dedicated mother of four children- David (19), Amy (16), Andy (9) and Lauren (9) and an active member of the Yorba Linda United Methodist Church, where she sings in the choir and plays bells in the handbell choir. Juggling work and family does not seem to tire her as she enjoys hiking, reading, playing guitar, gardening and Bible studies in her spare time. ‘Carpe Diem’ (Seize the Day in Latin) is her credo in life, and Gwen hopes to savor every moment and create beautiful memories in her new home with her family and friends.

Rita Wadhwa Mary Grace Cachuela In Peralta Hills, meet some of these exemplary Housewives... Rita Wadhwa is a woman who has truly seen the world and what it has to offer. She arrived in the U.S. in 1991 with her husband, cardiologist Dr. Parvinder Wadhwa. When she arrived, she was ready to take on the American culture and raise a family here. Despite being so engrossed in the culture, she has still managed to keep her Indian roots. She is a housewife who enjoys the pleasures of cooking her (grown) children and husband breakfast, and still manages to find time to run two businesses including a home health care company and managing her husband’s practice. Rita enjoys Zumba, exercising, lounging at popular places around town with friends, and spending time with her family. Rita and her husband frequently travel all around the world to unique places each time. Recent travels include an array of countries in South America including Brazil, Rio de Janiero, Peru, and Thailand. She has already scheduled a South Africa trip for later this year with her husband.

Rita Wadhwa She also enjoys shopping, taking pictures, and updating her Facebook page. She is very proud of her three children, all of which are in medical school at the moment aspiring to be physicians just like their father. Rita has truly mastered the art of combining the American culture along with keeping certain Indian traditions in the home.
