After 23 years, I often ask myself what impels me to continue organizing a festival like Artecinema.

Nowadays, art is experiencing a moment of great confusion: artists only seem to exist if they have received market recognition or if their works are sold at auctions or if they are present at all the art fairs. Furthermore, with the same speed as they soared to success, artists can be just as quickly forgotten.

Perhaps creating a film about an artist stems from the desire to overcome the fast-paced consumption of art in order to enter into the longer, more slow-paced dimension of story-telling through the language of cinematography.

Faithfully narrating the story of an artist is no easy task.

When selecting a film, the first thing I look for is the quality of the art and then the manner in which it has been interpreted by the director. With a camera in hand, directors become art critics and express their interpretation in the selection of certain film shots, editing and dialogues. Occasionally, a director’s personality is too forceful and, at that point, the film can’t possibly work because it has become a competition between two artists.

The films I choose are revelations that make me love an artist and allow me to discover his work. I choose films that tell the artist’s story respectfully and with poetry which goes right to the heart.

After viewing a documentary, I have frequently come to appreciate an artist who I did not particularly like before as I had not fully understood or perceived the nuances of his or her work.

pesso mi chiedo cosa mi spinga a organizzare un festival come Artecinema dopo 23 anni.

L’arte oggi vive un momento di grande confusione, l’artista esiste solo se riconosciuto dal mercato, se viene battuto alle aste, se lo si vede presente nelle fiere. E con la stessa velocità con cui raggiunge il successo, così può essere dimenticato.

Realizzare un film su un artista, forse nasce dal desiderio di superare la barriera del tempo e del consumo veloce dell’arte per entrare nel tempo più lungo del racconto attraverso un altro linguaggio.

Raccontare un artista rimanendogli fedele non è cosa da poco.

Quando seleziono un film, guardo per prima cosa la qualità dell’arte e poi il modo in cui il regista l’ha interpretata. Sì, perché il regista con la sua telecamera diventa un critico d’arte, dandoci una sua lettura che esprime scegliendo determinate inquadrature, montaggi e dialoghi. A volte capita che la personalità del regista sia troppo forte e allora il film non funziona più, diventa una competizione tra due artisti.

Il film che scelgo, è quello che mi fa amare l’artista, che me lo fa scoprire come una rivelazione, che me lo sa raccontare con lealtà e rispetto e con la poesia che sa arrivare al cuore.

Mi è capitato spesso di apprezzare, grazie a un documentario, un artista che prima non amavo, perché non lo avevo capito fino in fondo, non ne avevo colto le sfumature.

Il documentario quindi ha una funzione importante, ha la responsabilità di consegnare l’artista allo spettatore, imponendogli un suo tempo di lettura, un tempo lento a cui non siamo più abituati e che, per noi che corriamo sempre, è un dono.

Therefore, documentaries play an important role, they bear the responsibility of entrusting the artist to the spectator and setting the pace of interpretation: a slow-paced tempo to which we are no longer accustomed and which, as we are all in a perpetual hurry, is a precious gift.

With Artecinema I would like to offer time: time to dedicate to beauty, to poetry, to personal growth and a moment to forget about ourselves and be open to others .

Works of art, which are the irrepressible expression of this creative thrust, with their integrating power, have an effect on human beings because they transport personal experiences into a form of universal meaning which touches the hearts of all. Con Artecinema vorrei quindi offrire del tempo, un tempo da dedicare al bello, alla poesia, alla nostra crescita interiore, dimenticando noi stessi per aprirci all’altro.

ART DOCUMENTARY - A COMPROMISE ON THE NATURE OF TRUTH

Like any documentarian I set out to make a record of Maurizio Cattelan’s work and life - something that

could stand on its own as a document. But as the project developed, it became clear that this film would have to be more than that. As we hear Maurizio say in the movie, “truth is a function of efficiency”. Locating “truth” is really quite impossible. That’s what this movie is about in many ways - there’s no way to truly know another person when you have to rely on their presentation of themselves. This film deals with that in an upfront way, by acknowledging that identity is a slippery thing. And as soon as we establish that inevitability, we realize that like this one, almost every tale is necessarily a story within a story.

This elusiveness is just as true of Maurizio’s work as it is of the man. Capturing and exploring his body of work was a challenge as well. I tried to approach each piece as a character of it’s own, but the work itself defies easy characterization, just like Maurizio. One of the things Guggenheim curator Katherine Brinson says in the movie is that his work has two temporalities - two time lines. You come to a piece and it’s almost like a one-liner - you see it as a joke. You laugh and it’s easily understood. Then, as you sit with it, there are deeper layers of meaning underneath the work. It can turn horrifying, tragic or sad upon deeper consideration.

You can laugh at Maurizio’s work but you can also be instantly offended - it’s complicated. It was important to me that people realize that Maurizio’s work can be funny on one level but also quite serious and even painful on another, and our editor Lyman Smith worked hard to underscore this point.

Some of Maurizio’s creations speak to the most tragic and horrifying things in life. Feeling alone, or desperate, or scared - that’s all part of the human condition. It’s something we’ve all felt at one time or another. We’re all terrified of dying, or of losing love, or of failing, and Maurizio’s work deals with those big subjects.

IL DOCUMENTARIO D’ARTE - UN COMPROMESSO SULLA NATURA DELLA VERITÀ

I

n principio, da brava documentarista, ero partita con l’idea di documentare la vita e le opere di Maurizio Cattelan. Nel corso del progetto, però, è emerso in modo nitido che questo docufilm sarebbe stato molto di più. Maurizio sostiene che “la verità è una funzione dell’efficienza ma la localizzazione della verità è impossibile”. Di questo parla il film: non c’è modo di conoscere davvero un’altra persona quando ci si deve basare sulla presentazione che la persona in questione fa di sé. Il film affronta la questione in modo diretto, riconoscendo che l’identità è inafferrabile. Una volta chiarito questo è facile capire che, come in questo caso, ogni racconto è necessariamente una storia all’interno di una storia.

Anche le opere di Maurizio sono elusive come lui. Indagare ed esplorare le sue opere è stata una sfida. Ho provato ad avvicinarmi a ogni singola opera ma esse, proprio come Maurizio, sfuggono alle classificazioni facili. Una delle cose che la curatrice del Guggenheim, Katherine Brinson, dice nel film è che l’opera di Cattelan si legge lungo due assi temporali. Quando ci avviciniamo a un’opera questa ci colpisce come una battuta, un motto di spirito, una barzelletta. Ridiamo e pensiamo di averla capita. Poi, guardandola e studiandola, a una riflessione più attenta cogliamo gli strati più profondi di significato e l’opera può diventare spaventosa, tragica o triste. Era importante per me che la gente capisse che il lavoro di Maurizio può essere divertente ma anche serio e doloroso. Il nostro montatore Lyman Smith ha lavorato sodo per mettere in risalto questo punto.

Alcune delle sue creazioni parlano dei più tragici e orribili aspetti della vita. Sentirsi soli, disperati o spaventati è parte della condizione umana. Si tratta di qualcosa che tutti proviamo prima o poi. Abbiamo tutti paura di morire, di perdere l’amore o di fallire, e le opere di Maurizio trattano questi temi.

If art can make you feel less alone in your human struggling or more connected to the beauty in life and to your fellow humans, then it’s done its job. His genius is that he takes on these big themes in a singular way - by first making people laugh. I tried hard to make sure that people who came to the movie unfamiliar with Maurizio’s work could understand this dichotomy.

Ultimately it’s impossible to make a film about an artist that can do justice to an entire career. It was particularly difficult to do this with Maurizio Cattelan, because his personality and presence in the world is part of his practice and body of work. But I tried to honor his intentions as I took on this task, and in the end I believe audience will have an experience that brings them to Maurizio in a way that fulfills his oblique approach to the world.

Se l’arte riesce a farci sentire meno soli nell’affrontare i problemi della vita o più connessi alla bellezza che ci circonda e agli altri esseri umani, allora fa bene il suo lavoro. Il genio di Maurizio sta nel proporre questi grandi temi in modo singolare, facendo in un primo momento ridere le persone. Ho cercato di fare del mio meglio per far comprendere questa dicotomia a chi guarda il film e non conosce la sua opera.

Infine, è impossibile fare un film su un artista rendendo giustizia a tutta la sua carriera. È stato particolarmente difficile con Maurizio Cattelan perché la sua personalità e la sua presenza nel mondo sono parte integrante del suo modo di lavorare e della sua produzione. Ma ho tentato di onorare le sue intenzioni quando ho intrapreso questo lavoro e alla fine credo che il pubblico si avvicinerà a lui vivendo un’esperienza in linea con il suo approccio obliquo al mondo.

ART DOCUMENTARIES

I

t always starts with a human relationship.

I am not terribly interested in the subject matter, periods or paintings, but what I am undoubtedly interested in are people. I have an unbridled passion for telling stories about people’s lives.

As Carla Lonzi used to say, for me, these are the true masterpieces with their rises and falls and their charted courses. What exactly drives someone to begin a work of art. What spark, what small flicker, suddenly appears in the mind of a little boy or a little girl who, with time, is spurred on to seek out paint brushes or materials to be modelled? And how exactly does that small thought gradually become a drawing, sculpture or whatever? And how does it develop, how is it interrupted and how, ultimately, is it once again resumed?

Ah, those obstacles, those “rough spots” are so intriguing; this is what I find so fascinating, because they are useful even to those who will never have anything to do with creating art.

At one point or another, everyone in the world has had the desire to “externalize” something they felt deep within their beings, in other words, to make art. But in the majority of cases, it is a short-lived thought indeed. There are a thousand possible reasons; the lack of opportunity, the lack of faith in oneself or, simply, a mistaken interpretation of growing up which dilutes, conforms, formats and standardizes.

There are those, instead, who persevere, despite the obstacles.

Therefore, what I like is to place the spotlight on the challenges in a creative life.

To find the crucial points, the curves, the possibilities which were chosen as compared to those which were rejected and, of course, that drive to persevere.

I’ve always felt a nameless tinge of displeasure and regret when reading about lives viewed in terms of passages or end-products. What I have always truly enjoyed is seeking out the interrupted paths and roads, which were taken up again later. In short, to tell the story of what surrounds and goes into a successful work of art.

DOCUMENTARIO D’ARTE

A

ll’inizio c’è sempre una relazione umana.

Non ho un grande interesse per gli argomenti, le epoche, i quadri ma certamente per le persone. Ho una passione smodata nel raccontare le vite.

Come diceva Carla Lonzi, i veri capolavori sono questi per me. Le parabole, le traiettorie. Cosa spinge qualcuno a cominciare a lavorare d’arte. Quale scintilla, quale guizzo di bambino o bambina che spunta improvviso e che, crescendo, cerca pennelli o materiali da plasmare. Come si organizza quel pensiero piccolo che diventa disegno, scultura o chissà. E come cresce. Come si interrompe, come riprende. Ah che belli gli inciampi, lì c’è qualcosa di affascinante per me, perché serve anche chi d’arte nulla farà mai.

Non c’è creatura al mondo che non abbia desiderato ‘portare fuori’ qualcosa che sentiva dentro. Fare arte.

Ma nella stragrande maggioranza dei casi è un pensiero che si interrompe presto. Mille le ragioni possibili: le possibilità che mancano, la sfiducia in sé, o semplicemente un malinteso senso del crescere che annacqua, adegua, formatta, uniforma.

E c’è chi invece continua, a dispetto di tutto.

Ecco, mi piace mettere in scena la sfida di una vita creativa.

Cercare gli snodi, le curve, le possibilità scelte rispetto a quelle trascurate. Quell’insistere.

Ho sempre provato un dispiacere senza nome nel leggere le vite come punti, come prodotti. Ho sempre provato un piacere limpido nel cercare i percorsi, le strade interrotte e poi riprese. Raccontare quello che sta intorno ad un’opera riuscita.

L’intenzione rinnovata ogni giorno e mantenuta nel tempo.

In sintesi: quando racconto un artista penso a chi artista non è.

This intention is renewed every day and has been maintained over the course of time.

In brief: when I describe an artist I always think of who the artist is not.

My favourite challenge is to tell the story of someone who did not receive the recognition he or she deserved, perhaps because the artist was too silent or perhaps too far ahead of his or her times. When this occurs, it may result in having to work with reduced means but, on the other hand, with a great amount of creative freedom.

As is the case in the film about Renato Mambor.

Personally, I viewed him as a brilliant artist who received far less recognition than he deserved. What I loved most about him was his humanity, which is “art”, as well as his dignified reserve. His great height provided him with a different perspective of things. He was also irreproachable, a form of irreproachableness that went far beyond a physical attribute. His filter-less manner of being as well as his continuous generosity.

I choose to have time, because it is useful.

It reconnects us with our most intimate inner selves.

During the course of my career, I have told the stories of people who are still alive as well as of those who are no longer with us.

And so, I pursue a present time in which I was not present. This work requires a somewhat savage form of excavation, a jolting search for the precise moment in which something happened caused a door to move, to be pushed wide open. Long conversations, long periods of time skimming through papers, long periods of time studying.

The need to go places which bore witness to the present as it was being formed, to search for a trace, for a finger print.

La sfida che preferisco è raccontare qualcuno che non ha avuto il riconoscimento che merita. Perché troppo silenzioso o magari troppo in anticipo sui tempi.

Fare questo può comportare lavorare con mezzi produttivi ridotti.

Ma anche una grande libertà di ricerca.

Come nel caso del lavoro su Renato Mambor.

Artista folgorante per me. E assai meno conosciuto, oggi, di quanto meriti.

In questo caso ho amato di lui massimamente la qualità umana, che è ‘arte’.

La sua ritrosia anche. Lui così alto, di un’altezza che era anche un punto di vista sulle cose. Così dritto, di una drittezza che era più di un dato fisico. Il suo essere senza filtri, come il suo continuo movimento del dare.

Scelgo di avere tempo. Perché serve.

Serve per rintracciare quell’intimità.

Mi è successo di raccontare persone vive ma anche persone che non ci sono più.

E allora inseguo il presente in cui io non c’ero. Un lavoro di scavo, un po’ selvaggio, alla ricerca sballottante di quell’attimo in cui è successa quella cosa che ha mosso, che ha spinto una porta fino ad aprirla del tutto.

Lunghe conversazioni, lungo scartabellare. Lungo studiare.

Andare nei luoghi che hanno visto quel presente formarsi. Cercare un’impronta.

Il documentario (d’arte e non solo) è la forma di manipolazione della realtà più alta che c’è. Assai più delle storie di finzione. Perché c’è, nel documentario, il presupposto di un rapporto più fedele alla realtà che si racconta. Un film è, per sua stessa natura, facilmente riconosciuto come opera arbitraria, selettiva e personale. Un documentario no.

Documentaries (about art but not only art) are the highest form of manipulation of reality. Much more so than in fiction because in documentaries there is an assumption of a narration which is more faithful to reality. Instead films, by their very nature, are easily recognized as arbitrary, selective and personal works which is not the case with documentaries.

In the viewer’s expectations, there is the prevailing concept that this is a more scientific narration tied to facts, the historical period and realities of that time. Instead, precisely because there is the presumption of reality, documentaries are the most subjective form of narration.

Therefore, what counts is the intention.

I immediately reveal that I am the one telling the story.

The narrator’s voice is my voice, it has been recorded, but not in the studio. It is a huskier voice, recorded in the room where I write and develop my plans. It’s me, not in the least neutral, but rather, to the contrary, partial and very much involved in what I am narrating.

Being able to speak to young people, to those who are disenchanted or who have never had many opportunities to become familiar with art, is a way of looking at things that is constantly shifting. Finding leaps or intervals in time is one of art’s specialties. It breaks time into countless pieces and gives it back to you as if it were yours.

Nell’idea di chi guarda prevale l’aspetto di una narrazione più scientifica legata ai fatti, alle epoche, alla realtà storica. E invece il documentario, proprio perché si suppone reale, è la forma di racconto più soggettiva che c’è.

Dunque quello che conta è l’intenzione.

Svelo subito che sono io a raccontare.

La voce narrante è la mia. Registrata, non in studio. Voce più ruvida. Registrata in una stanza, quella in cui scrivo e progetto. Sono io, per nulla asettica, e anzi parziale e partecipe di quello che racconto.

Parlare alle persone giovani. A chi coltiva il disincanto. O a chi non ha avuto molte occasioni di frequentare l’arte, che è un modo di guardare alle cose che non si ferma mai.

Trovare i salti nel tempo. Perché l’arte ha questa specialità, rompe il tempo.

Lo spacca in mille pezzi e te lo restituisce come fosse il tuo.

Ian Forster, Stati Uniti, 2018, 17’, inglese Barbara Kruger usa immagini prese da contesti diversi e vi sovrappone brevi frasi di denuncia.

Julie Mehretu ricontestualizza la storia della pittura paesaggistica americana mettendo a confronto le sue visioni sublimi con la dura realtà.

Simona Ostinelli, Svizzera, 2018, 53’, italiano, inglese Lawrence Carroll da oltre trent’anni porta avanti una ricerca sul monocromo. Il film lo segue a New York, nel suo studio di Bolsena e in Svizzera mentre prepara una retrospettiva al Museo Vincenzo Vela di Ligornetto.

François Lévy-Kuentz, Francia, 2017, 54’, inglese Alla fine della Seconda guerra mondiale centinaia di artisti europei si rifugiarono a New York. In questo contesto di grande fermento culturale una nuova generazione di artisti, fra cui Pollock, Rothko, de Kooning, emerse sotto la bandiera comune dell’Espressionismo astratto.

Rafael Salazar, Ava Wiland, Stati Uniti, 2018, 56’, inglese Fin dagli anni ‘90 Berlino ha accolto artisti provenienti da ogni parte del mondo. Questo film esplora il lavoro di alcuni dei più noti artisti stabilitisi nella città tedesca: Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg, Olafur Eliasson, Hiwa K, Susan Philipsz.

Un angolo della scultura è stato “strappato” e gettato nel cratere del Vesuvio. La distanza tra le due parti è la linea immaginaria di 18,53 km che dà il titolo all’opera.

Il film ripercorre gli oltre quarant’anni di carriera dell’artista, dai suoi esordi come designer nel gruppo Condé Nast fino a un recente progetto di arte pubblica in uno skatepark di Manhattan. Julie Mehretu ricontestualizza la storia della pittura paesaggistica americana mettendo a confronto le sue visioni sublimi con la dura realtà.

Il collaboratore Jason Moran, compositore e pianista jazz, segue l’artista nello studio per creare un arrangiamento musicale ispirato al suo processo creativo fatto di segni improvvisati e cancellature.

Barbara Kruger layers found photographs from existing sources with pithy and aggressive text that involves the viewer in the struggle for power and control that her captions speak to. This documentary traces Krugers’s 40 year career from her start as a designer at Condé Nast to a recent outdoor public art project in a Manhattan skatepark. Julie Mehretu recontextualizes the history of American landscape painting by merging its sublime imagery with the harsh realities not depicted. Collaborator Jason Moran, a composer and jazz pianist, joins Mehretu in the studio to create a musical arrangement inspired by her improvisational process of markings and erasure.

Ogni Aspirante Aspiratore, creato dall’artista Sissi, ha un’identità ben definita e con un nome che indica un concetto chiave, coerente con la sua forma e la sua funzione. Attraverso un originale casting, gli Aspiranti Aspiratori presentano al pubblico la loro genesi iniziata per commissione della Fondazione Ermanno Casoli e dell’azienda Elica che ha chiesto all’artista una riflessione sul tema della purificazione dell’aria.

This animated video realized by Maurizio Finotto using stop motion animation, narrates the birth of a family of ten Aspiring Aspirators: ten potential characters aspiring to become purifiers. Each Aspiring Aspirator created by the artist Sissi, has its own well-defined identity and a name which reveals a key concept coherent with its form and its function. In a very original casting, the Aspiring Aspirators present the public with their genesis initiated upon request of the Ermanno Casoli Foundation and of the Elica company which asked the artist for her reflections on the theme of air purification.

Dal giardino di una casa napoletana si vede il Vesuvio. Le curve del vulcano separano il mare dal cielo. Un cuneo di bronzo bianco alto tre metri è piantato per quasi tutta la sua altezza nel terreno del giardino. Il cuneo, prima di essere realizzato in bronzo, è stato modellato in creta e vi è stato strappato un angolo, a sua volta poi fuso in bronzo. Quest’ultimo pezzo è stato gettato nel cratere del Vesuvio: la distanza tra le due parti della scultura è una linea immaginaria di 18,53 km che dà il titolo all’opera di Francesco Arena.

Vesuvius can be seen in the distance from the garden of a Neapolitan house. The curves of the volcano separate the sea from the sky. A white bronze wedge, some 3 meters in height, has been planted for almost its entire length in the earth of the garden. Before its realization in bronze, the wedge was modelled in clay and a corner was torn away which was then, in turn, cast in bronze. This piece of corner was subsequently thrown into the crater of the Vesuvius: the distance between the two parts of the sculpture is a virtual line of 18,53 km for which the work by Francesco Arena is named.

This film observes Alfredo Jaar’s creative process. His works address big issues in different parts of the world, such as immigration at the Mexico and USA border, genocide in Rwanda or the military coup in Chile. Jaar believes that art is “the last place of freedom” in our society and he displays his work as an act of resistance. This is the first film done about this great artist and is also a journey through his work, with exhibitions in Finland, Venice, Buenos Aires, Santiago and New York. The soundtrack of the documentary is by his son Nicolas Jaar, one of the most influential musicians of the world current electronica.

Pappi Corsicato è nato a Napoli nel 1960. Ha studiato danza, coreografia e recitazione a New York. Nel 1993 ha scritto e diretto il suo primo film, Libera, che vince il Ciak d’Oro e la Grolla d’Oro per il migliore lungometraggio. Tra i suoi film: Buchi Neri; un episodio del film collettivo I Vesuviani; Il seme della discordia; Il volto di un’altra. Dal 1994 ha diretto oltre quaranta video-documentari su artisti contemporanei fra i quali: Richard Serra, Jeff Koons, Robert Rauschenberg, Jannis Kounellis, Anish Kapoor e Gilbert & George, alcuni proiettati anche alla Tate Modern di Londra e al Centre Pompidou di Parigi. Inoltre ha curato la regia e l’allestimento scenico di opere liriche come Carmen nel 2000 al Teatro San Carlo di Napoli e La voce umana al Ravello Festival nel 2006.

Ignorato dai critici che non gli riconoscevano nessun talento, il pittore olandese Han Van Meegeren diventò un chimico autodidatta e un abile falsario. Fu uno dei più esperti contraffattori del ventesimo secolo e durante la Seconda guerra mondiale riuscì a vendere per cifre altissime i suoi falsi Vermeer che riproducevano perfettamente la tecnica e lo stile del pittore. Van Meegeren riuscì a raggirare numerosi direttori di musei e collezionisti, compreso il Maresciallo del Reich Hermann Goering.

Dismissed by critics who were unable to recognize any talent in his works, the Dutch painter Han Van Meegeren became a self-taught chemist and a master forger. He was one of the twentieth century’s most skilled forgers and during the Second World War managed to sell for enormous amounts of money his false Vermeers, which perfectly reproduced the painter’s technique and style. Van Meegeren even managed to fool numerous museum directors and collectors including Reich Marshal Hermann Goering.

Duccio Brunetti è nato a Spoleto nel 1991.

Nel 2011 ha frequentato l’European Film College, scuola di cinema e arti visive in Danimarca. Ha lavorato come AD per produzioni cinematografiche quali: Ben Hur; Zoolander 2; Biblical Project; Mary Magdalene. Ha diretto diversi progetti, che vanno dai cortometraggi ai videoclip, ai documentari, alla video arte. Nel 2016 ha vinto il Nastro Azzurro Video Talent Award al Festival di Milano con l’opera TRIART e il premio Edison for Nature organizzato da Edison, con il documentario Gocce di energia.

Durante il Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto, ha diretto il concerto Luci dal mondo esterno - 2016 di Jeff Mills con la Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra.

Non lo sappiamo. Quello che sappiamo è che noi di satelliti ne abbiamo uno, la Luna. E se ne avessimo due? E se la Terra ne avesse sessanta? Lune è il racconto dell’installazione luminosa composta da sessanta lune disseminate nel centro storico di Spoleto realizzate da Giancarlo Neri nell’estate del 2017 per celebrare i sessant’anni del Festival dei Due Mondi.

We don’t know. What we do know is that we only have one satellite, the Moon. What if we had two? What if the Earth had sixty? Lune (Moons) tells the story of the luminous installation, sixty moons distributed throughout Spoleto’s historic center, that artist Giancarlo Neri did in the summer of 2017 to celebrate the sixty years of the Festival of Two Worlds.

A partire dalla fine degli anni ‘80 e nel corso della sua trentennale produzione, Cattelan ha sconvolto il mondo dell’arte contemporanea e ha continuato a provocare e ispirare fino alla sua mostra al Guggenheim Museum di New York, nel 2011. Con questa installazione, che presentava tutte le sue opere sospese al soffitto della famosa rotonda del museo, Cattelan ha deciso di porre fine alla sua meteorica carriera proprio al culmine del suo successo.

His stunning exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City featured all of his works to date suspended from the ceiling of the world-famous museum’s rotunda, encapsulating a brief but meteoric career that Cattelan himself terminated at the height of his success.

Un ritratto intimo della scultrice britannica Rachel Whiteread mentre prepara una grande retrospettiva alla Tate Britain di Londra. Il suo lavoro esplora i temi della memoria e dell’assenza, creando calchi da semplici oggetti domestici come lavandini o borse dell’acqua calda, fino ad arrivare a calchi di stanze o case intere. In questo film rivisitiamo il controverso lavoro intitolato House, una replica in scala reale dell’interno di una casa nell’East End di Londra che alimentò un acceso dibattito sull’arte contemporanea.

L’artista ricorda quel giorno del 1993 quando fu la prima donna a vincere il Turner Prize e nello stesso giorno apprese che House sarebbe stata demolita e che sarebbe stata obbligata ad accettare un premio di protesta come “peggiore artista del mondo”.

Morag Tinto è una documentarista nordirlandese. Il suo lavoro spazia in una vasta gamma di argomenti e situazioni. Ha girato nelle prigioni della Scozia; in Madagascar a bordo di una nave ospedaliera; a Vienna con una bambina prodigio compositrice durante la messa in scena della sua prima opera. Negli ultimi tre anni ha realizzato i ritratti di alcuni tra i più importanti artisti che lavorano oggi in Gran Bretagna per la serie Imagine della BBC. Ha vinto numerosi premi.

An intimate portrait of British sculptor Rachel Whiteread as she unpacks her life’s work for a major retrospective at Tate Britain in London. Her work explores themes of memory and absence, casting sculptural forms from familiar domestic objects from sinks and hot water bottles to living rooms and a terrace house. In this film we revisit Whiteread’s acclaimed and controversial work entitled House, a full scale replica of the interior of a terraced house in London’s East End, which fuelled a national debate about contemporary art. Rachel Whiteread recalls that turbulent day in 1993 when she became the first woman to win the Turner Prize and simultaneously learned that House was to be demolished and she would be obliged to accept a protest prize as the “worst artist in the world”.

Nel 2001 vince la Menzione Speciale al Minimum Prize, Università delle Idee di Michelangelo Pistoletto, con il progetto Quel tanto di differenza. Ideatrice e fondatrice con l’economista Giovanna Galletti dell’Istituto di ricerca e comunicazione Labodif, dedica la propria vita allo svelamento dello sguardo femminile.

Uno sguardo intimo sulle opere e la vita di Renato Mambor, artista della Scuola romana di Piazza del Popolo, oltre che attore, autore e regista teatrale. Gianna Mazzini ha instaurato con Mambor e la sua compagna, Patrizia Speciale, un rapporto di amicizia profonda, seguendolo per quindici anni fino al giorno della sua scomparsa, nel dicembre del 2014. Era stato Mambor stesso a chiederle un documentario, senza musica, e lo straordinario materiale raccolto e assemblato in questo film gli restituisce un ritratto inedito.

An intimate view of the works and life of Renato Mambor, artist and member of the Roman School of Piazza del Popolo, as well as an actor, author and theatrical director.

Gianna Mazzini established a profound friendship with Mambor and his life partner, Patrizia Speciale, and accompanied them for fifteen years until the day of the artist’s death in December of 2014. Mambor had personally asked her to make a documentary without any music, and the extraordinary material gathered and assembled for this film provides us with a never-before-viewed portrait of the artist.

Soundings 2018 documenta l’opera presentata allo Studio Trisorio di Napoli nel 2014 e installata poi al Maxxi di Roma nel 2016. Soundings è un lavoro sul concetto di lontananza che indica percorsi visivi e sonori attraverso i tabulati delle maree di vari porti del mondo. Il termine inglese “soundings” ha un doppio significato: al plurale “fondali” e “misurazione del mare”; al singolare “cassa armonica” e “sonorità”.

L’installazione si incontra e si confronta con Cardiologia, la canzone che Francesco De Gregori rivisita e ritrascrive in dialogo con le “partiture di luce” di Lucia Romualdi e i suoni dei proiettori Kodak in movimento continuo. La doppia struttura di Soundings rispecchia concettualmente il dialogo fra i due artisti.

Paolo Pittoni si è laureato al DAMS di Roma nel 2010 in Cinematografia e Fotografia con specializzazione in Arte e Spettacolo. Dal 2003 è assistente di studio di Lucia Romualdi e collabora con fotografie e riprese a molti suoi allestimenti in spazi pubblici e musei, sia in Italia che all’estero.

Soundings 2018 documents the work presented at the Studio Trisorio in Naples in 2014 and then at the MAXXI Museum in Rome in 2016. Soundings is a work based on the concept of distance, which indicates visual and audio experiences through the tide tabulations of various ports in the world. The term “soundings” has two meanings: in the plural “sea bed” and “measuring the depth of a body of water” and in the singular “sound box” or “sonority”. The installation serves as a point of encounter and comparison with the song Cardiologia by Francesco De Gregori which has been revisited and re-written in keeping with Lucia Romualdi’s score and the sounds of Kodak projectors in continuous movement. The dual structure of Soundings is a conceptual reflection of the dialogue between the two artists.

In seguito collabora a diverse trasmissioni culturali e realizza circa cinquanta ritratti di pittori, scultori, scrittori e di numerosi cineasti tra cui Jean Painlevé, Rainer W. Fassbinder, Louis Buñuel. Da oltre vent’anni si dedica essenzialmente ai film sull’arte. Ha realizzato grandi monografie di artisti come Jules Pascin, Marc Chagall, Man Ray, Yves Klein, Salvador Dalí, Piet Mondrian, Alexander Calder e film su movimenti artistici come Le scandale impressioniste; Quand l’art prend le pouvoir. I suoi film sono stati premiati a numerosi festival internazionali.

Alla fine della Seconda guerra mondiale, il mercato dell’arte di Parigi era fermo.

Numerosi artisti europei del gruppo surrealista in fuga dal nazismo, si erano rifugiati a New York. La città intellettuale era in grande fermento e grazie al boom economico del dopoguerra nel giro di pochi anni prese il posto di Parigi come capitale mondiale dell’arte. In questo contesto, una nuova generazione di artisti, come Pollock, Rothko, de Kooning, emerse sotto la bandiera comune dell’Espressionismo astratto. Dopo gli orrori di Auschwitz e di Hiroshima, questi giovani pittori americani sentivano che il mondo non poteva più essere rappresentato come prima e optarono per la pura astrazione. L’avanguardia americana ha offerto un nuovo modo di considerare l’arte e di rappresentare questo mondo che andava ripensato e ricostruito.

At the end of World War Two, the art market in Paris was at a standstill. Numerous European artists of the Surrealist group fleeing Nazism had taken refuge in New York. The city was buzzing intellectually. Boosted by the post-war economic boom, within just a few years New York had taken over Paris’s role as the world capital of art. Against this background, a new generation of artists, such as Pollock, Rothko, de Kooning, emerged under the joint banner of Abstract Expressionism. After the horrors of Auschwitz and Hiroshima, these young American painters felt that the world could no longer be represented as it had been before. Instead, they opted for pure abstraction. The American avant-garde offered a new way to consider what art is and how to represent this world which needed to be rethought and rebuilt.

Alan Yentob joins South African artist William Kentridge as he prepares an epic frieze along the banks of the river Tiber in Rome, and visits him in his hometown of Johannesburg, the inspiration for his magical hand-drawn animated films. Brought up during the Apartheid era, Kentridge has witnessed the transition to a multi-racial democracy and his art reflects South Africa’s turbulent recent history.

Patrick Ladoucette inizia la sua carriera come fotografo e da oltre trent’anni realizza film di viaggio, arte e architettura. Con il regista François Bel, ha partecipato per oltre un decennio a varie spedizioni artiche e antartiche collaborando alle riprese e al montaggio di diversi lungometraggi, tra cui L’art et le déluge.

In ambito culturale ha diretto film per i maggiori musei francesi e per importanti mostre internazionali. I film più recenti: Les lumières de l’Islam; Africom, lutte contre le trafic illicite des biens culturels africains; La nef de Charles Quint, le temps d’une renaissance; La cité interdite. Ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti tra cui il premio dell’Association Internationale d’Art Photographique, il premio Géo-Magazine e il Grand Prix del Festival du Film de Voyage per il film Irlande, l’autre île.

All’incrocio tra Occidente e Medio Oriente, la costruzione del Louvre Abu Dhabi è un’avventura architettonica, museale e culturale tra tradizione e modernità. Il documentario ci mostra il processo creativo dell’architetto Jean Nouvel dalla fase di progettazione fino alla realizzazione di questo “museo universale” concepito per un clima desertico in una città moderna.

At the crossroads between the West and the Middle East, the construction of the Louvre Abu Dhabi is an architectural, museum and cultural adventure merging tradition and modernity. The documentary provides us with behind the scenes view of all the phases from the design, the creative process put into being by the architect Jean Nouvel, and ultimately the realization of this “universal museum” conceived for a desert climate in a modern city.

Juliette Garcias è nata nel 1970. Dopo gli studi in Storia dell’arte alla Sorbonne ha esordito lavorando al montaggio e poi alla regia di documentari della serie Architectures per il canale Arte. Tra questi ricordiamo: L’église Notre Dame du Raincy, 2011; Le Centre national de la danse, 2011; Le Rolex Learning Center, 2012; Photo: après la photo, 2013; L’École d’art de Glasgow, 2013; La maison d’hôtes - Wa shan, 2015. Nel 2009 è stata premiata per il lungometraggio Sois sage.

Vista dall’alto, assomiglia a un lungo serpente, a una balena, a un fiume. All’interno, invece, è un’enorme vetrata. Ideata dal designer israeliano Ron Arad, noto in tutto il mondo per i suoi mobili giocosi dalle forme arrotondate, la struttura si snoda per oltre 350 metri attraverso la Médiacité, un gigantesco centro commerciale, costruito a Liegi nel 2009 per rivitalizzare una zona industriale in dismissione. Alla Médiacité Arad è riuscito ad applicare le sue idee innovative ad un progetto architettonico di ampia scala.

From the sky, it resembles a serpent, a whale or a river. From inside, it looks like a huge stained-glass window. Dreamed up by the experimental, provocative Israeli designer Ron Arad, whose playful furniture designs featuring rounded, sculptural shapes have made him world famous, this startling construction swells, curves and winds its way through Médiacité, Liège’s gigantic shopping centre, for over 350 metres. It is a covered mall - the main artery of a huge shopping centre built in 2009 to regenerate an abandoned industrial estate. At Médiacité, Arad has set out to conquer architecture, putting his ideas into practice on a bigger scale.

Ian Forster è produttore e regista presso la società di produzione Art21. Dal 2009, anno in cui è entrato a far parte della società, ha partecipato a cinque stagioni di Art in the Twenty-First Century e a William Kentridge: Anything Is Possible. Ha supervisionato la serie digitale Extended Play producendo oltre cento brevi ritratti di artisti. Nel 2013 ha creato e diretto Artist to Artist una serie di video online di conversazioni tra artisti registrate durante le varie biennali internazionali in Italia, Turchia, Emirati Arabi e Stati Uniti.

L’artista Robin Rhode (1976, Città del Capo, Sudafrica) con una squadra di collaboratori crea vivaci murales temporanei che servono da sfondo per le riprese fotografiche di perfomance. Girato nel quartiere in cui è cresciuto, dove vive una comunità multietnica afflitta da droga e guerre tra bande, il film riprende Rhode alla testa di un gruppo di giovani che condividono le stesse speranze partecipando insieme a un progetto artistico. Gioiosa e coraggiosa, Zanele Muholi (1972, Durban, Sudafrica) fotografa persone di colore gay, bisessuali, transgender e intersessuali in Sudafrica sostenendo la loro lotta per dare visibilità a una delle comunità più vulnerabili del paese.

Artist Robin Rhode (b. 1976, Cape Town, South Africa) and his team of assistants create vibrant, temporary outdoor murals that serve as backdrops for photographed performances. Filmed in the neighborhood where he grew up in a mixed-race community plagued by drug and gang wars, this film captures Rhode as he leads a team of local young men in creating a new work and shares his hopes for what participation in an art project can offer. Joyful and courageous, Zanele Muholi (b. 1972, Durban, South Africa) photographs black gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex individuals in South Africa, driven by their intense dedication to increasing the visibility of one of the country’s most vulnerable communities.

Randy Barbato e Fenton Bailey sono registi e produttori. Si sono conosciuti alla New York University e hanno formato il duo discopop-rock Fabulos Pop Tarts. Nel 1991 hanno fondato la casa di produzione World of Wonder con sede a Los Angeles. Nei loro film hanno sempre trattato temi controversi come in Party Monster, 1998; The Eyes of Tammy Faye, 2000; Inside Deep Throat, 2005. Tra le produzioni televisive segnaliamo le serie RuPaul’s Drag Race; Million Dollar Listing; Big Freedia; Island Hunters. Il blog aziendale della WOW è stato nominato Best Counter Culture Blog da LAWEEKLY. Nel 2014 Randy Barbato e Fenton Bailey sono stati premiati con l’IDA Pioneer Award per i loro documentari.

Questo film, primo lungometraggio sulla vita di Robert Mapplethorpe realizzato dopo la sua morte, è il ritratto di uno degli artisti più controversi del ventesimo secolo.

Mapplethorpe ha ritratto il sesso maschile, la nudità e il fetish agli estremi, portando il suo lavoro a essere ancora etichettato da alcuni come “pornografia mascherata da arte”. Le testimonianze di amici, modelli, famigliari, dei suoi più stretti collaboratori e la speciale partecipazione di Patti Smith si intrecciano a inedite interviste nelle quali lo stesso artista racconta apertamente la sua vita, gli amori e il lavoro. Arricchiscono il racconto filmati e fotografie inedite provenienti direttamente dall’archivio della Mapplethorpe Foundation.

This film, the first full length feature film on Robert Mapplethorpe’s life since his death, is a portrait of one of the twentieth century’s most controversial artists. Mapplethorpe depicted male genitals, nudity and fetishes, causing his work to be labelled by some as “pornography masquerading as art”. In the film, interviews with friends, models, family members, his closest co-workers and especially Patti Smith are intertwined with interviews with the artist himself where he speaks, in shocking honesty, about his life, his loves and his work. The directors mix the filmed narrations with a never before viewed photographic repertory from the Mapplethorpe Foundation archives.
