GETTING AROUND IN THE CITY OF DESIGN AND CREATIVITY!

Kortrijk is preparing for the 24th run of the international Biënnale Interieur. From 17 to 26 October, a holy shrine of contemporary design will be erected in the halls of the Kortrijk Xpo and throughout the city. In addition to the cultural programme from curator Joseph Grima (GB) and his collective, Space Caviar, entitled ‘The home does not exist’, commercial renewal is the main focus, and the halls of Kortrijk Xpo will be transformed into dynamic, open landscapes with central agoras. INTERIEUR 2014 amazes with new stand concepts, exhibits and specially created Interieur bars based on designs from the winners of the Interieur Awards.

The INTERIEUR 2014 city programme is devoted to experience, encounters and avant-garde design and is a visual link to a route that runs along the Buda Factory, the Broel Museum, the restored Broel Towers and the Broel School. The latter is a new Biënnale location where the Interieur Bistro, among other attractions, will be erected according to the collective design of the 8 Designers of the Year (2006-2013) and with the theme ‘Belgian Banquet’. In the Buda Tower, the band Goose, from Kortrijk, is planning a ‘design performance’ on the first five evenings of the Biënnale. We are looking forward to this unique concept which is sure to 'colour outside the lines' and which casts a fresh look at creative impulses.

Elegant and timeless or hyper-advanced and modern - today the selection of watches is more extensive than ever. So a watch is the ideal accessory to lend that extra touch of distinction to your personal style. Moreover it is an investment which brings pleasure to the wearer for decades to come. Here we present you with an overview of the newest models.

TIME FOR LUXURY Touch of nostalgia The original Hamilton Pan Europ, introduced in 1971, was one of the world's first automatic chronographs. Modern materials and colour schemes transform the Pan Europ heritage into a dazzling, contemporary watch. It has a power reserve of 80 hours and comes with a cloth band and one in leather, together with a tool for switching them.

HIGHFLYER

The multi-level dial of the Khaki X-Wind limited edition produces a fascinating 3D effect. The watch embodies the multidimensionality of the aviation theme with contrasting metal touches on a two-tone dial plate, available in a sandblasted or a brushed finish. The combination of stainless steel and rubber reinforces that effect, and the hands are reminiscent of the instruments in an airplane cockpit. This highflyer has a power reserve of 60 hours. Hamilton Khaki X-Wind limited edition

Hamilton Pan Europ

10 Radiant elegance The delicate play of the lines of this design is an homage to the shape of the moon and the glittering of a starry night and is a symbol of the passage of time. Its soft silhouette is emphasized by the pure simplicity of the dial, while the whole piece is illuminated by bright diamonds.

High-tech design

Two time zones for when you are travelling, an altimeter with differential pressure sensor, a chronograph with lap times and interval logbook, a compass, a timer, an azimuth, regatta function and background illumination. With this solar-powered watch with a touch screen made of scratch-resistant sapphire glass, you can do almost anything. The design is modern and dynamic, the push buttons are ergonomic and the structure of the band is the finishing sporty touch on this watch. Tissot T-Touch Expert Solar

Longines PrimaLuna

ROBUST SPORT WATCH This sport watch is rugged, too. Among other things, it has survived a session of spraying with corrosive liquids, a fall onto a concrete floor and a sand storm. And all of that without losing its cool, streamlined look. It is crafted from stainless steel, and the optional silicone bumper ensures extra protection. It is available in three colours: black, blue and green, each with a complementary rubber watch band. Victorinox Inox rugged watch

CULINARY KORTRIJK GASTRONOMIC TOPCREATIVITY

Mechelse koekoek, celery root, garlic lemon sauce and farm fresh eggs

14

Ingredients 1 Mechelse koekoek / 2 lemons / 1 garlic bulb / 1 shallot, finely chopped / 1 onion / 2 carrots / thyme / bay leaf / 1 celery root / 4 farm fresh eggs / flat-leaf parsley

This year, Culinary Kortrijk and Creative Kortrijk meet during the Biënnale Interieur. Design Tables, an initiative of Toerisme Kortrijk [Tourism Kortrijk], brings design straight into the culinary heart of the city. In eight restaurants, including Va et Vient, Taste and Colours and Table d’Amis, you can discover the handiwork of a designer and enjoy design on, or next to, your plate. These three chefs give you a preview of their mouthwatering dishes.

Preparation The celery root tapenade: Clean the dirt from the celery root. Without peeling, season it with salt and pepper and add some thyme. Wrap the seasoned celery root in aluminium foil, and bake in a oven preheated to 180-200° for 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until soft. Allow to cool and carefully peel. Mash the cooked celery root and season with salt, pepper, lemon zest and a small amount of lemon juice. Mechelse koekoek and sauce: Remove the fillets and the bones from the chicken carcass. Roast the carcass and the wings for 20 minutes in a 200° oven. Place the roasted meat in a stew pot and add 2 carrots, 1 large onion, 2 bay leaves, 3 sprigs of thyme and 1 garlic bulb. Add water to cover and allow to simmer for 1 hour. Pass the stock through a fine sieve and reduce. Season with lemon zest and lemon juice. Add the finely chopped shallot and some finely chopped garlic. Season the chicken fillets on both sides, and fry until the skin is crispy, turn, finish cooking and allow to rest. Farm fresh eggs: Fill a saucepan with water, add a pinch of salt and a dash of vinegar and bring to a boil. Crack each of the eggs into a coffee cup and poach them one at a time for 2 minutes. Garnish with a few young leaves of flat parsley. Matthias Speybrouck Chef at Va et Vient Matthias Speybrouck went to earn his stripes with Piet Huysentruyt in the Ardèche before he landed in the kitchen of In De Wulf with Flemish Foodie Kobe Desramaults. After that, he gained more experience at Oud Sluis before going on to be part of the team to open the Vitrine in Ghent. Today, Matthias is at the stove at Va et Vient, a trendy restaurant with an informal atmosphere, where you can enjoy a creative menu every day.

Pan-roasted plaice, broccoli and yoghurt with brown butter Ingredients 2 plaice, 500 g each / 1 broccoli / 100 g Greek yoghurt / 100 g farm fresh butter / olive oil / pepper and coarse salt

© INFO@HEIKKI.BE

Preparation Fillet the plaice, leaving the white skin on the fish. Lay the fillets on top of one another and fry the fish in a hot pan with a drop of oil until the white skin-side is golden brown. Remove the fish from the pan and add the butter in pieces. Allow the butter to brown until it becomes ‘beurre noisette’. Allow to cool to room temperature. Then mix with the Greek yoghurt until creamy. Cut the broccoli rosettes from the plant and cut the stalk into quarters. Chop the rosettes into coarse crumbs in a food processor, and sauté them briefly in olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Blanch the stalks for 1 minute and then place them on a grill pan until a nice grill pattern appears. Season with salt, pepper and olive oil. Arrange the fish on a plate with the Greek yoghurt and the brown butter. Place a broccoli stalk next to the fish, and finish with some broccoli crumbs.

Matthieu Beudaert Chef at Table d’Amis* Matthieu Beudaert was educated as an art historian, but lost his heart to gastronomy along the way. During his art studies, he took a four-year cooking course and travelled through Europe with his wife searching for gastronomic wonders. At his restaurant, Table d’Amis, which was awarded a Michelin star last year and which earned a 17/20 in the Gault Millau Guide 2013, he presents a modern version of traditional cuisine. Nashi pear, beef tenderloin, leek and salsa

15

Ingredients 2 Nashi pears / 250 g beef tenderloin in thin strips / 1 leek Bouillon: 330 ml Chardonnay vinegar / 330 ml dry white wine / 330 ml water / 70 g coarse salt / 150 g sugar • Salsa: 2/3 rhubarb / 1/3 sweet pepper / sugar / butter • coarse salt / salted butter / Himalayan salt / Madagascar pepper / cacao butter • Garnish: hazelnut / black salt / poppy seeds / dried chorizo powder / Mexican cucumber / rocket flower / rat-tail radish

Preparation Poach the pear al dente in the bouillon. Roll up the tenderloin tightly in foil. Season with coarse salt. Cut the rhubarb and the sweet pepper into pieces, mix them together and add sugar to taste. Cook the rhubarb mixture in butter until the moisture released evaporates. Blend the mixture in a blender and then pass it through a very fine sieve. Caramelize the poached pears in butter, sprinkle them with Himalayan salt and season with Madagascar pepper. Slice the leek into fine rounds and brown them in cacao butter al dente. Arrange the warm pear on the plate with the leek and the rolled slices of tenderloin (at room temperature). Garnish with the salsa, hazelnut, black salt, poppy seeds, dried chorizo, Mexican cucumber, rocket flower and rat-tail radish. Dirkjan Decock Chef at Taste and Colours Since he was twelve years old, Dirkjan Decock has been passionate about cooking. In his restaurant, Taste and Colours, you literally dine in the kitchen, in a warm and homey atmosphere. He presents light, playful dishes and focuses on local and sustainable products.

DAAN ROOSEGAARDE

MUSICIAN, CREATIVE ENTREPRENEUR AND INNOVATOR

WILL.I.AM

Once every three years, the Creativity World Forum arrives on our Belgian shores. On 5 and 6 November of this year, Flanders DC is bringing world class speakers to Kortrijk. The goal of this Forum is to be more than just a conference. In fact, there is at least as much opportunity to become inspired and to actualize your creativity off the stage as there is coming from it.

CREATIVITY WORLD FORUM

Kortrijk on 5 and 6 November - the world's innovation capital The first Forum was organized by Flanders DC in Leuven in 2005. It was the starting shot for the world-wide Districts of Creativity network. Since then, the Forum has been organized in one of the 13 world-wide Districts of Creativity.

Headliners in 2014

This year, the headliners are architect Zaha Hadid, ex-Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki, Dutch designer-artist Daan Roosegaarde and Tom Kelley, CEO of innovation bureau IDEO. The finale is a world topper: will.i.am, musician, creative entrepreneur and innovator. Together with his Black Eyed Peas, he has sold more than 33 million albums world-wide. In addition to that, will.i.am is Creative Director at Intel. These creative crossovers make will.i.am an example of an entrepreneur of the future. His story and all of the inspiring sessions with these internationally renowned speakers during the open section of the programme are flanked by readings and workshops for a more limited audience. The goal is to cover the entire spectrum of entrepreneurial creativity in two days.

Meeting potential partners

Collaboration is becoming one of the most important pillars for innovation. Even more so in a country where SMEs are a measure of the economy. Not only will there be room to network during the Forum, we will also make sure that you can meet as many potential partners as possible. Therefore, we have not only set up a knowledge marketplace, but there will also be an opportunity to discuss the inspiration garnered from the Forum and to look ahead to the future.

Innovation in practice

Experimentation is an important way to bring innovation into practice and to stimulate your creativity in new ways. During the Forum you will therefore also be able to work in the Forum's innovation lab. There, during the challenges, new business models arise, and you can talk about your plans with more experienced entrepreneurs. You will also discover the innovation future behind new technologies and then, in smaller groups, delve deeper into the innovation subjects that interest you most.

White lab coats

A look at the line-up for the open section proves that innovation is more than men in white lab coats. Technology is only a first step towards innovation. Social and artistic trends can just as easily be the inspiration for a new earnings model which companies can in turn use to get down to their work. Innovation in the artistic sectors is not only driven by technological progress but also by demands that arise from society. The stories of widely recognized entrepreneurs from the creative sectors can also also serve as an impetus to challenge entrepreneurs from other sectors.

Creativity World Forum 5 and 6 November 2014 in Kortrijk Xpo Order your tickets here: (Early Bird tickets available until 19 September) www.creativityworldforum.be/buy-tickets Be quick to join us! The last edition of the CWF was sold out a month in advance.

The City of Kortrijk and its surrounding design region form the creative backdrop for this Creativity World Forum. In recent years, the impact of design on innovation has only increased. The influence of the creative atmosphere left behind in the wake of the Interieur show two weeks before will certainly have an impact on the prevailing mindset.

TESTIMONIES

Three creative entrepreneurs on design and innovation in Kortrijk.

Gerd Couckhuyt

Business Manager of creative design unit Bhoom

“Kortrijk is a city of creation.” Olivier Caluwier and Mathieu Bellens Owners of design studio Five AM

20

“We got to know each other at school, but after that, in our professional lives, we each went our own way. In 2011, we founded Five AM: a design studio where together we could give shape to our ideas. As far as creativity is concerned, we are on the same wavelength, but of course we each have our own vision and ideas. It is just this interplay that results in constructive discussions and even stronger designs. In the beginning, we had our own place in the business centre on the Leiestraat; later we moved to a building on the Vandaleplein, a green and peaceful square in the centre of the city—the ideal place for us. Kortrijk is a city full of life, where as a designer you have the space to realize things and where creation is stimulated in an open and accessible way. You do, in fact, hear ‘a design city’ quite a bit, but we prefer to speak about ‘creation’, a place where things are made and where there is constant movement. It is the ideal base of operations for actualizing projects, both in Belgium and beyond. Because in addition to local projects, we now also have projects running in Namur, Liège and even in The Netherlands.”

“Two years ago Bhoom was born out of my activities as an interior architect. We “Design is alive in this city.” specialize in product and interior design. Our product designs range from lighting to seating, with the focus on lifestyle in the broader sense of the word. The outdoor seat, Elements, which we designed for Manutti, won a Red Dot Award this year, and the seating elements in K in Kortrijk are also a Bhoom design. In addition, we create concepts for interiors in our own, specific design aesthetic, which is characterized by an organic and futuristic look. We do this for hotel and catering businesses and shops, although nowadays private customers do also dare to go for an interior with such a distinctive style. Kortrijk is a great base of operations for our activities. Design is alive here, certainly while INTERIEUR is going on, and initiatives like Design Region Kortrijk create an important link with the business community. In the meantime, I have married a woman from Kortrijk, so the snapshot is complete (laughing).”

ELEMENTS designed for Manutti - Winner Red Dot Award 2014

New shop concept from Five AM for wine merchant Crombé.

Steven Dehollander

General Manager of Pilipili

“Pilipili designs industrial, medical and consumer products, primarily for the Belgian SME. Our team consists of 13 people. Some of them think up new concepts, the others work these concepts out in concrete form and ensure that they can be put into production and brought to market. The company grew out my own one-man business that was located in Ypres. When I started, 18 years ago, we decided to move to Kortrijk because it was more easily accessible to our customers from the rest of Belgium. Last year we purchased a building on the Kanonstraat, close to the station. So we regularly travel by train or by bicycle. Not only is this convenient and environmentally friendly, but it allows us to be a lot more connected with city life. And that is very often a source of inspiration. Our contact with the university college, the BUDA::lab and with INTERIEUR are also very beneficial to us. We have absolutely found our permanent home here.”

The Lavazza Boutique by Stephanie's has opened its doors in the K in Kortrijk Shopping Centre. The shop took its inspiration from the Lavazza Bars that are located throughout the world. The boutique has two storeys with seating for 80 upstairs and for 60 more downstairs, the majority of which are on the terrace on the Veemarkt.

46

LAVAZZA BOUTIQUE With the focus on coffee Workshops

“It is a place where you can enjoy a good coffee, but you can also stay for a light meal,” they tell us. “We have also tried to bring Lavazza's Italian roots into the shop with a menu with an Italian character.” For example, it is possible to order a focaccia (a warm bread) or to have a panna cotta or tiramisu for dessert, but the Italian influence can be felt in the drinks as well.

Take-away is also an option in the new boutique. “We offer croissants, chocolate pastries and muffins all day long, and the customer can take our coffees with them in a handy mug.” The focus of the boutique, though, is the coffee. A separate coffee menu ensures that the customer has a wide selection of more than 19 different coffees. Connoisseurs can personalize their coffees with 13 toppings such as chocolate, caramel or vanilla, or they can choose a small liquor like Amaretto or Baileys. Our employees are trained to make these coffees by a Lavazza barista who teaches them the tricks of the trade. Besides all of that, there is a corner of the shop where customers who have a Lavazza A MODO MIO machine can buy their capsules. Prospective buyers also have the opportunity to purchase their own Lavazza A MODO MIO machine. And, of course, coffee lovers who do not have a Lavazza machine can visit this corner for coffee pads, ground coffee or coffee beans.

www.lavazzaboutique.be

As a continuation of this vision, the Lavazza Bar is also more than just a place to take a short coffee break. Workshops for the training of future baristas are organized here on a monthly basis. Jeroen Clauwers is the perfect trainer for this programme. He has years of experience as a coffee barista with this Italian coffee brand, and he is a renowned jury member of the Belgian barista contests. Tentative dates for the workshops are 22 September, 21 October, 26 November and 18 December, and the price is 15 euros. The workshop starts at 20:00 and lasts for two hours. The Lavazza Boutique by Stefanie’s is open on the same days as the K in Kortrijk from 10:00 to 19:00 and on Fridays until 20:00. If you are interested in the workshops, please send a mail to jeroen@lavazzahoreca.be.

The tenth edition of the Biënnale Interieur is on in Kortrijk from 17 through 26 October. ‘W/O - We are the next generation’ is also a party to this event and has therefore taken over the 2nd floor of the Buda Factory in Kortrijk. ‘W/O - We are the next generation’ exhibits virtually everything that creative education in Flanders has to offer.

W/O - WE ARE THE NEXT GENERATION

With young, creative talent during Biënnale Interieur Visitors are submerged in a creative bath and see a selection of student projects within various subject domains from creative academic institutions in Flanders. So, for example, there is product design that places the focus on the trajectory ‘from design and production technology to industrial trade’. In addition to that, a good deal of attention is paid to furniture design, but textiles, fashion and accessories also share the spotlight. The second element focusses on architecture, for interiors, buildings, public spaces as well as for landscapes. And finally, multimedia design will also be exhibited: games, web design and graphic design.

45 and Quinze & Milan

48

This project is a design from student Jolien Rubbens (Howest) and was created as her final academic project in collaboration with Quinze and Milan. 45 is an innovative and whimsical storage and presentation object that is the ideal eye-catcher in an interior or as a shop display. The hexagonal shape offers the user many possibilities. Depending on how it's used, a horizontal, vertical or diagonal surface is available - ideal for books, clothing and even for shoes. The unique use of materials in the insertable section breaks up the solid unit and brings the 45 into perfect balance.

Limulus During ‘W/O - We are the next generation’, a number of very special innovations from the students (from Howest) of Industrial Product Design can be admired. The Limulus, a mood lamp created in collaboration with Passion 4 Wood, which actually consists of one sheet of veneer and a unique suspension system, is on display. The Limulus has all it needs to distinguish itself from existing veneer lamps. An unobtrusive eye-catcher designed for catering businesses and striking interiors. The mood lamp can be placed in various positions, depending on the wishes of the user. The lamp was designed by five final-year students who got together during the third year of their bachelor's programme to form the design agency Crate. These students are: Gregoir Basyn, Frederyk Boudengen, Laurenz Danneels, Ewout Noreille and Michaël Vandezande. Crate can best be defined as a melting pot of skills and friendships. Five designers and five assignments: a fascinating and instructive experience. These five designers did not hesitate to set Crate and the vision of this new design agency on the map. Networking events, negotiating with companies, international travel, contests and various side projects - no effort was too great for these students when it came to increasing their name recognition.

Kabas Howest student Laura Leynen designed the Kabas garment bag in collaboration with Fiveal & Intersales. The interior of the Kabas is a garment bag made for suits of varying sizes. The simple folding system makes this bag quick and easy to take along on holiday or on business trips. The bag is reinforced at various points which keeps the suits from wrinkling. You can carry the bag in one of three ways: in your hand, over your shoulder or on your back.

No better way to finish off your day of shopping in Kortrijk than with a locally brewed beer. Here we present five of these beauties that you may not be familiar with but simply must try.

To your health! 5 locally brewed beers from Kortrijk that you simply must taste

VanderGhinste Oud Bruin

50

VanderGhinste Oud Bruin is a refreshing Southwest Flemish red-brown beer brewed by mixed fermentation, which is typical for the region. The main ingredients of this beer are barley malt, wheat, caramelised malt, hops and water, all of which are transformed by high fermentation into this delightful brew. Fortifying it with beer which is spontaneously fermented results in this typical red-brown beer. The taste is a balanced combination of the fruitiness of the high fermentation and the soft acidity of the spontaneously fermented beer.

Remembrance Beer

- Alcohol percentage: 5.5% - Delicious with poultry, lamb or pork dishes or with fish dishes with creamy sauces.

- Alcohol percentage: 9% - Delicious with chocolate truffles with advocaat filling

BREWERY VANDER GHINSTE

www.brouwerij-eutropius.be

In honour of the one-hundredth birthday of the First World War, the Eutropius Brewery collaborated with two American hobby brewers to brew this special memorial beer. This robust tasting beer is made of three types of Poperinge hops, barley malt, rye malt, water and yeast. The taste is bitter and far from sweet in remembrance of the horrors of the war. In other words, a strong beer with a serious dose of hops.

Brasserie LeFort

Brasserie LeFort is a complex, 8.5% vol, dark beer with soft, sweet and fruity tones. The pale and roasted dark barley malt lends this brew the perfect balance. Aromas of chocolate and caramel and the fruitiness produced by the high fermentation give this dark beer its absolutely unique taste.

Oscar

This light, smooth beer is ideal as an aperitif or with light meals. It is made from three grains, barley, wheat and rye, two types of hops, water, brewer's yeast and champagne yeast. Oscar goes down smooth, is moderately dry and has a beautiful head. With its complex and well-balanced aroma, this is a beer to enjoy to its fullest, one you can drink throughout the entire evening.

- Alcohol percentage: 8.5% - Delicious with tuna steak, beefsteak and other red meat dishes

- Alcohol percentage: 6.6% - Delicious with fresh mussels

Goedendag

Goedendag is one of the heavy, blond beers. It is a beer brewed by high fermentation with secondary fermentation in the bottle. After pouring, this delicious brew shows off its beautiful, strong head. Besides the taste of hops, in this potent beer you will also discover fruity tones with aromas of ripe banana as well as a soft bitterness. -Alcohol percentage: 8% - Delicious with fish

K in Kortrijk is one of the centres of attraction of the Kortrijk region, but thanks in part to the Eurometropolis, it also boasts a strong international allure. After all, with the magnificent TGV connections in Lille at the Lille Flandres and Lille Europe stations, London, Paris and Brussels are only a stone's throw away. And from Lille, you can be in the centre of Kortrijk in just under 30 minutes, even with the train.

EUROMETROPOLIS

A international meeting place, for shopping, too. Did you know that more than 80 million potential customers livewithin a 300 km radius around the Eurometropolis Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai , and that it is the largest metropolitan area in all of Europe?

52

The Eurometropolis Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai itself consists of three subregions that form a cross-border metropolis (2.1 million in habitants) around Kortrijk, Lille and Tournai (together 143 municipalities). Within this collaboration platform, the states, regions, provinces and 5 intermunicipal utilities work together with the civil society to realize one and the same goal: to simplify the daily lives of the inhabitants who want to live, work, enjoy the night life, visit etc. over the border. That, of course, also means that mobility must be optimized and that the set-up of new cross-border initiatives within the Eurometropolis must be encouraged. By creating this dynamic, it must become possible, in a step-by-step manner, to break down the geographic, language and psychological borders.

Combine your shopping experience with a sightseeing visit

Obviously, shopping and sightseeing are the pre-eminent reasons for crossing the border. Well now, why not combine the two? Our multicultural and multilingual Eurometropolis has much more to offer than you'd think. Even for its own inhabitants. Anyone who wants a clear overview of all of these highlights can rely on one of our handy guides. • A completely revised tourism map, available in all tourism offices. This map quickly familiarizes you with the entirety of the French-Belgian metropolis. There you will find not only a handy overview of the sights you simply should not miss, but the urban centres, with their rich cultural offerings, are also highlighted. Active walkers, cyclists and river tourists can find rural areas there, too, which they can explore to their hearts' content. • The tourism site www.visiteurometropolis.eu, which highlights various original options for exploration. The themed tours on video are certainly fascinating. • The Lonely Planet Guide on the Eurometropolis Lille-KortrijkTournai (2013): the classic guide for the modern traveller.

And meanwhile, there are also several fascinating activities that you won't want to miss:

• ‘Eurometropool Tour’ from 2 to 5 October: stage race for professional cyclists. The racers will arrive in Kortrijk on 2 October. • ‘Kortrijk à Lille’ from 9 to 12 October: three inspiring Kortrijk days. Everyone who's anyone in Kortrijk will be presenting themselves (expositions, performances, …). • ‘Passions secrètes, collections privées flamandes’ from 10 October until 4 January in the Tripostal in Lille: an exhibition of more than 140 contemporary works of art from more than 80 artists. What is so exceptional about this exhibition is that it includes high-profile works from the collections of many discreet but important Flemish art collectors which have never before been exhibited.

New location for the Eurometropolis Agency On 25 August, the Eurometropolis Agency moved from the Casino Building on the Casinoplein to a space in the Parkoffice building at Doorniksestraat 63 in the centre of Kortrijk. In cooperation with the Group Hugo Ceusters – SCMS, a new office was quickly found. Some four years ago, the well-known real estate agent started a new branch in Ghent. From there, they served the East and West Flanders regions. In addition to an intensive build-up in the City of Ghent, where they succeeded in positioning themselves alongside their colleagues who have been active there for years, the Group is focussing more and more on the province of West Flanders. Their increasing street presence, also in and around Kortrijk, is certainly a result of these efforts. This is how a good cooperation with Eurometropolis came in to being. This resulted in their finding a new location, in concrete terms, in the offices of Parkoffice at Doorniksestraat 63 in Kortrijk.

Tel. 056 21 88 05 • www.ceusters.be

For quick transportation throughout the Eurometropolis, you can consult www.eurometropolis.eu. There you will find various travel routes for train, bus, bicycle or car. (http://nl.eurometropolis.eu/leven-in-de-eurometropool/zich-verplaatsen.html) Meanwhile the Eurometropolis is making arrangements with the NMBS and the SNCF [National Belgian Railway Company] to launch concrete campaigns in the near future to make cross-border public transport more attractive, for the shopping addicts, too! HOU JE MANIEREN IN 50 STAPPEN [MIND YOUR MANNERS IN 50 STEPS]

Look after it yourself and mind your manners - two things that mothers often say to their children. So, Dries and Yuri, the guys from WASBAR, thought that the next logical step after their “Trek je Plan [Look after it yourself]” was to show Flanders how to “Hou je manieren in 50 stappen [Mind your manners in 50 steps]”. When should you answer your phone and when not? How should you behave on an airplane? How do you eat sushi like a true Japanese? What can be posted on Facebook or what are the real rules of e-mail etiquette? They also talk about correct table manners and how to be the perfect host or guest. With their witty writing and colourful images, they breathe life into the fundamentals of etiquette in an original manner. With extra tips from Joy Anna Thielemans, Lize Feryn and Noémie Wolfs (Hooverphonic). Hou je manieren, Dries Henau & Yuri Vandenbogaerde, published by Manteau, available in bookshops and in the WASBAR starting in October.

CUSTOM-MADE BICYCLE © PHOTOJOOST.COM

KORTRIJK UNIQUE# We all have at least one, a piece of furniture which we just can't seem to part with. Luckily, that is no longer a problem. At least not if it is up to Phatcatsam, aka Sam van der Wiele. Six years ago he started to upholster furniture in his garage. Nowadays, he has his own upholstery studio and showroom at Groenestraat 330 in Menen. There, old armchairs, car interiors, seats, cushions, decorative pillows and sofas are all given a second life. Good for your wallet and a nice way to give your interior a personal touch. You can admire several of his creations in one of the display windows in K in Kortrijk on the Wijngaardstraat. www.phatcatsam.be

After his death, cycling champion Marcel Kint left behind not only his home and his workshop in Kortrijk but also the design for the exclusive bicycle frame that he built in the workshops of his sponsor Mercier in 1938. These days, grandson Marniek Kint and his wife Lien Baguet use this design as the foundation for the custom, handmade bicycles they sell from Het Salon - the old residence of the ex-world champion. There, together with the customer, they create a customized Marcel Kint bicycle with authentic parts in combination with contemporary design. You choose the (technical) features and how the bicycle will look yourself. Furthermore, the bicycle is finished with the characteristic Marcel Kint signature and the metal head badge from 1954. Everything is assembled locally, resulting in a completely unique Marcel Kint bike.

The designers of Coolwood have a love of wood and of design, and that is evident in their creations. Wooden stag heads cut out with a laser cutter, modern wooden lamps, furniture and other accessories are their specialities. Their mission? To make sustainable design affordable and to continue to produce high-quality and original products. On top of that, all of their designs are given form with respect for the environment. Their sunglasses are made from recycled wood from discarded skateboards or wood remnants from furniture factories and only wood with an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label is used for the other objects. www.coolwood.be

Creative with motorcycles Custom gowns à la carte The creative spirit that is Katia Desauw has always been fascinated by buttons, ribbons, designs and patterns. With a head bursting with designs and ideas, she got down to work and created Mijn jujupeke, her own concept for exclusive custom-made clothing for kids and teens, girls and boys. Together with you, she creates an original design that fits you and your tastes perfectly. You choose a style, fabric, piping, buttons … and in doing so create your own personal article of custom-made clothing. The ideal fancy dress clothing for a wedding, communion or spring festival or the perfect sweet-sixteen dress. Flower girls' and ring bearers' outfits are designed to perfectly match the bride and groom, and you can be sure that no one else will be wearing your one-of-a-kind dress or suit. www.jujupeke.be

Steven Decaluwe and his wife Sofie have a soft spot for vintage and for motorcycles. They have even opened their own shop based these themes. It's called MotoKouture. There they sell vintage motorcycles and motorcycle apparel with an authentic look but which incorporate the most modern safety features. Everything that they sell is made by the couple themselves, and no two items are the same. They use a different donor bike for each project; they then give it a new design and a unique look. They also have their own line of leather motorcycle apparel. These pieces are custom-made by hand in their own atelier. www.motokouture.be

The Wijngaardstraat suffered a bit of a hard time after the opening of K in Kortrijk. The construction of the shopping centre disrupted life on the street and created a good number of vacancies in the pedestrian-only street. Luckily, all that is beginning to change. Thanks to dynamic (new) businesses, initiatives from the city and the efforts of the shopping centre itself.

KORTRIJK'S WIJNGAARDSTRAAT IS RALLYING Finally, a revival Several years ago, approximately half of the buildings in the Wijngaardstraat were empty, but in recent months, the situation has started to change. After the earlier arrival of WASBAR, a skate shop and a brasserie, one day in August three new businesses opened their doors - the shoe store Dedito, the sneaker shop Num Nut and the baby specialty shop Petit Chérubin. “The shopping street suffered greatly when the shopping centre came to town,” confirms Dominique Desmeytere, Manager of K in Kortrijk. “As a matter of fact, we can all cheer now that a real revival is taking place.”

Attractive shop windows

58

Last year the management of K in Kortrijk spearheaded the initiative to revitalize the empty shop windows in the Wijngaardstraat and the Sint-Jansstraat. On the initiative of Natacha Jaumain, a jewellery designer from Kortrijk, the empty windows of the shopping centre were given a new purpose. They were made available at no charge to thirteen young entrepreneurs and new small businesses. That way she could give the contacts that she created with Karamblas an extra boost.

The windows are not shops but provide starting businesses with the chance to show their wares. “We wanted to set a good example with this initiative,” says Dominique Desmeytere. “By giving the empty sites a purpose, you stimulate sales in all of the shops in the area. Everyone reaps the benefits of these efforts.”

Joining forces The efforts the city made in this area are also visible today. Under the title Kortrijk Sows, the City Council aims to reduce the number of empty sites in the street by making the shops available for less to young, starting businesses. Another initiative supported by the cornerstones of our business district, who have had shops for years now, and one that gives the Wijngaardstraat a new dynamism. “The gulf between small businesses and the larger chains sometimes appears very large indeed,” Dominique Desmeytere tells us, “but this is the best evidence that synergies can always be found. By joining forces, we make shopping in and around the Wijngaardstraat more attractive, and that is good business for us all.”

Night Shift Kortrijk is a new trade show concept - with the emphasis on concept. This entire event revolves around tasting, dancing, experiencing and encountering. All of the best of West Flanders is brought together under one roof and presented, but then in a most creative manner. While enjoying good music and cocktails, entrepreneurs and visitors swap energy and ideas.

NIGHT SHIFT

The new networking in Kortrijk

Not your standard networking function Organizers Maxime Neslany, Mathieu Luyens and Jean-Michel Teerlinck wanted to treat the invitees to something other than a standard networking cocktail party or dinner. The trio has the necessary event planning experience and possess a heavy dose of organizational talent. Night Shift, the platform where local businesses and initiatives meet. After editions in Antwerp and Ghent, they are now also organizing the event in Kortrijk - an event where you will truly enjoy yourself and where the energy between all of the creativos in attendance will be overflowing.

“ Night Shift. Business never sleeps.

64

On 4 October, Kortrijk Xpo welcomes the first West-Flemish edition of Night Shift. Young, local businesses as well as tried and true establishments show off what they are all about and present themselves to hip 'n happenin' West Flanders. Not your standard trade show with aisles and cubicles, but an open space full of unique initiatives and amazing experiences. The entrepreneurs who take part in Night Shift are multi-taskers, just like the organizers are. Besides their core businesses, they also develop other initiatives. Companies and people with an open vision, that is what makes the Night Shift formula so successful. The carefully selected companies are unique in their sectors, which means that there is no competition during the event. Cross-pollination and interesting encounters are the focus, even for the entrepreneurs themselves.

Outside the box

The participating entrepreneurs and companies have been challenged by Night Shift to step out of their comfort zones and put together something original. Definitely outside the box and interactive - the visitor will reap the benefits of this challenge. There will be something to taste, experience, win or discover at every stand. And the beauty of it is this: almost everything presented at Night Shift comes from the region. Local goods that are easy to find again after the event and addresses that are actually useful. Employees' organizations VOKA and BRYO support the event and will be in attendance with a their own stand. The community for the creativos, Design Regio Kortrijk, will also be represented. The evening will be accessorised with cocktail bars, acts, music and shows. What starts as a trade show with refined background music breaks open, in crescendo, into a high-end party. The networking continues, but on the dance floor.

On Saturday and Sunday, the 4th and 5th of October, the moment will have finally arrived: TEXTURE is opening its doors in the former flax catalogue house in Overleie at Noordstraat 28 in Kortrijk. TEXTURE invites everyone to participate in this festive opening weekend, free-of-charge!

The 'Museum over Leie en Vlas' opens on 4-5 October!

Mathias Speybrouck from the restaurant Va et Vient has put together a delicious dish composed of vlaswijting (pollock in English, but literally flax fish in Dutch), Vlaskaas (a Dutch cheese, literally Flax cheese), flax seed and tomato.

Modern museum in a lively neighbourhood

Flax dishes and embroidery bombs

noAarchitecten and MADOC converted this warehouse and catalogue house (1912) into a modern museum building while maintaining and highlighting the industrial character of the building itself. Inside TEXTURE there is also a multi-purpose room, a workshop, a cosy museum café and a spacious tourist reception area. The museum embodies the link between the region's history with flax and the innovative developments and applications of flax in composite materials and other features. The museum plaza has been transformed into a garden designed by studio BASTA. The inhabitants of Overleie were closely involved with the design of the garden and the plantings. The Overleie Neighbourhood Association asked the local residents for typical local sayings, and the best submissions will become part of the floor of the museum plaza. TEXTURE connects!

Mathias Speybrouck has stood behind the stove of chef Kobe Desramaults's ‘In de Wulf’ as well as having stirred the pots of Sergio Herman. This spring, though, he started his own restaurant, Va et Vient, in the Handboogstraat in Kortrijk. He has put together a delicious dish of vlaswijting (pollock in English, but literally flax fish in Dutch), Vlaskaas (a Dutch cheese, literally Flax cheese), flax seed and tomato. The recipe is being distributed as an publicity gadget during large events in the Kortrijk Region and can also be found in the museum. In anticipation of the opening, the non-profit textile atelier Bolwerk is going wild. Just like knitting, embroidering is hip once again. Together with all embroidery fans, Bolwerk will take over the city. If you feel like joining us for some embroidery bombing, then contact us as soon as possible at roos@bolwerk.be

Free visit from 10:00 to 18:00.

Avant-première with Radio 2

During the opening weekend, everyone is welcome to visit the museum free-of-charge from 10:00 until 18:00 and discover the different ‘rooms’ in the museum. The Wonder Room is based on today's world. Why make a conscious choice for flax? It is not a showroom or a shop but rather a lab where you can discover, taste, feel and test the different flax variations. The Leie Room presents the story of flax processing in the the Leie Region - an intriguing history of stops and starts with a cast of thinkers, risk-takers and hard workers playing the main roles. During his lifetime, a flaxworker had to deal with many highs and lows, and the sector itself went through historical ups and downs. But with resilience and ingenuity, the region always managed to solve its problems. In addition to the flaxworkers, the dealers, engineers and businessmen were also part of the story. Together they helped the flax region achieve world-wide fame. The Treasure Room is located under the golden crown - a feast for the eyes with a selection of top products made of flax and linen. Here, the highlights are the radiant damasks, lace, embroidery and fine fabrics which make up this abundant and exceptional textile collection.

Pigeons and messages During WWI, the old flax catalogue house was requisitioned by the German occupiers and converted into a pigeon prison, since at that time pigeons were used as a means of communication. In TEXTURE, the pigeons can be found throughout the installation from textile artist Christien Meindertsma. At any rate, during the opening weekend they have an individual message in store for each visitor! (In cooperation with Productions&Zonen)

On Thursday, 2 October, Avondpost Radio 2 West-Flanders will broadcast live from TEXTURE between 16:00 and 18:00. We are giving 2 couples the chance to join us at the live broadcast! Starting at 15:00, they will be personally greeted with an exclusive tour of the museum and a tasty lunch in the museum café! Would you like to join us, then send an e-mail to texture@kortrijk.be with the answer to the following question: What was the flax catalogue house used for during WWI? Noordstraat 28, 8500 Kortrijk +32 56 27 74 70 texture@kortrijk.be www.texturekortrijk.be

Surprise and experience

Come and sample the offerings during the opening weekend. Bring the children along, because they have some work cut out especially for them with Madam Bobbin. In the lace initiation workshop, they can make a nice bracelet in no time at all. More of a technical type? Then you can go visit the swingle turbine where Marcel De Poortere will tell you all about its technical features. More interested in the local flax history and the other sites to see in the Overleie neighbourhood? Then go along on a Vlasdate, a walk in the immediate vicinity of TEXTURE accompanied by the expert explanation of Filip Decock. The final event of the opening weekend is the TEXTUUR Dance Show, a cross-border art project between Kortrijk and Roubaix where dance and textile meet.

All info about the opening weekend programme can be found on the TEXTURE Facebook page and at www.texturekortrijk.be

based on a concept from the Designers of the Year (2006-2013). The Biennale Interieur has invited all the Designer-of-the-Year winners from the past 8 years to collaborate on the development of the Interieur Bistro for the Biennale INTERIEUR 2014. We are looking forward to bringing together the pinnacle of Belgian design to create an unforgettable dining experience. Their collaborative concept will revolve around Belgian hospitality and a limited but fine selection of top-quality Belgian food. The Interieur Bistro will be located in the Broel School, a new Biennale location in the heart of the City of Kortrijk.

Studio Glithero has created a fantastic trip through the Broel Museum based on the intriguing, Pepper's Ghost technique. Pepper’s Ghost is a Victorian invention. Utilizing optical effects, it creates ghostly apparitions in a staged scene. The absent collection of the Broel Museum will also be brought to life using this technique. Studio Glithero played with several beautiful items from the collection and created a world of illusion. While you walk along the display windows, you will see objects appear and then disappear. One fantastic ceramic object suddenly has four different guises.... Fantoom takes you on a journey through the museum space. In the installation, a story, which reflects the material existence of the past as well as the virtual reality of the present, slowly unravels. NEWS FROM KORTRIJK Architect, artist, restorer and connoisseur of tapestries, Reza Hatamian is a multi-faceted man. He loves art, in the broadest sense. Abstract, surrealistic or classical, he is at home in various styles. That also applies to the carpets that he designs himself for his clients in his studio on Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat in Kortrijk. “Contemporary or classical, I design each carpet individually according to the wishes of my clients.”

A CARPET BRINGS COLOUR INTO YOUR HOME

Reza Hatamian working in his studio in Kortrijk.

72

Love of the craft

Versatile artist

Reza Hatamian was schooled as an engineer-architect, but in the 1980s he started working as a designer in an industrial carpet factory. “It was during a recession; there was little work for architects, and I had learned the art of tapestry in my youth. My roots are in Iran, the cradle of Persian tapestry, and I was born with an immense love of art. Creating and drawing designs - in those days that was all done by hand. First to scale and then at actual size. A long-term effort, indeed, but I loved doing it. When design switched over to computer programs, I started by own business, Artes Design; I did it for my love of the craft. By now, I have been in business for 30 years.”

Reza’s craftsmanship as a restorer of tapestries is well-known, even beyond our own borders. Here at home, he has restored the tapestries from the Ooidonk Castle. In addition, he keeps himself busy with other types of art. Painting, lithography, etching, silk screening, sculpting in polyester and ceramic, glass and bronze—he has mastered practically every possible technique. “Art is my life, and I love continuously trying out something new. Tapestry, painting, ceramic, as long as I can create, I am happy (laughing).”

Artist Neighbours

Life in your interior “I search for all of the carpets that I sell myself: authentic hand-knotted Persian carpets, but also carpets from other countries. Here you will find traditional designs as well as more abstract carpets which fit in contemporary interiors. I also regularly make carpets for my clients, according to a unique design in the colours that they choose themselves. Sometimes these are abstract designs, in shades that fit with their interiors. Other clients are more fascinated by symbolism and the stories found in the classical Persian tapestries. No matter which style they choose, a carpet always brings colour and life to their interiors and to their lives. That is the beauty of this trade.”

Would you like to see Reza Hatamian at work? Visit his studio on 17, 18 or 19 October during Buren bij kunstenaars. There, you can discover his works of art and attend a pottery demonstration. More info: www.burenbijkunstenaars.be

Fresh breeze blowing through Dille & Kamille Kortrijk Dille & Kamille has 8 stores in Belgium. The shop in Kortrijk - directly across from the shopping centre - opened its doors in 2010. At that time, the opening of K in Kortrijk, and other initiatives led by the Kortrijk City Council to transform Kortrijk into a real shopping city, proved to be an irresistible force of attraction on Dille & Kamille. Since then, you can find their beautiful tableware, table linens, kitchen implements, wooden toys and other articles for the home, garden and kitchen on the SintJansstraat in Kortrijk - everything you could classify as ‘Natural simplicity’. But lately, a fresh breeze has been blowing through the shop. Store Manager, Miguelle Lust, took over the reins three months ago. Together with her Store Manager Miguelle Lust took over the reins of the Dille & Kamille in Kortrijk three months ago.

team, they want to make Dille & Kamille even more well-known in the Kortrijk area. “Of course, we remain a shop that first and foremost radiates simplicity and calm,” Miguelle tells us, “but at the same time we will have more of a presence on social media. This autumn, in fact, we are organizing various workshops, and our customers can expect all kinds of surprises. In honour of our 40th birthday this year, each week starting 29 September, there will be something new on the programme, from various tastings to a ‘Cooking with vegetables from the kitchen garden’ workshop. Anyone who is curious about the events or who has not yet discovered our shop should definitely stop by.”

On the trail of a spy Op 5 December 1917, Evarist De Geyter was sentenced to death. His crime? Reporting information to the Allies about German transports, troop movements, billeting and the positions of anti-aircraft defences and weapons depots in Kortrijk. The story of Evarist De Geyter, the spy, runs like a red thread through the exhibition “On the trail of a spy”. You will come to understand how life in Kortrijk was in the period 1914-1918, how the citizens experienced the occupation and which measures the military leadership adopted. You will discover the many airfields in the vicinity of Kortrijk where legendary figures, such as Manfred Von Richthofen, risked their lives and see the trail of destruction left in the wake of the air raids. Liberation was finally achieved with the disastrous final offensive in October of 1918. It is an exhibition full of incredible stories, unique images and moving testimonies. Short films and sound fragments bring the whole exhibition to life. These beautiful extras were realized by director Klaus Verscheure, who also worked on In Flanders Fields. We don't want to give it away just yet, but we also promise several show-stoppers of international importance. Be there, beginning of September!

Practical information The exhibition ‘On the trail of a spy’ will take place from 12 September 2014 through 23 December 2015 in Kortrijk 1302, the city's history museum located at the Begijnhofpark. www.kortrijkbezet14-18.be
