hello dear reader!

I hope this finds you and your loved ones doing well.

Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil! I am thrilled to be visiting my family after 3 very long years. Last time I visited was in 2019. It’s been very hard to be so far away, especially since the pandemic started. Thankfully they are all doing well.

Coming back here is always fun to visit with family and friends. It is refreshing to meet with them and reminisce on times that I was so happy and didn’t realize. It is not that I am unhappy now - I am very happy and grateful - but at times we allow unimportant things to overshadow what is so meaningful and right in front of us!

While here, it seems time goes by twice as fast. But, I’ll be sure to relish every moment of it.

Anyway, I wish you a month filled with meaningful moments.

What Is Your Interior Design Style? Part I

ften, people don’t know their own interior design style. It is common to have more than one style in a home or even more so one that isn’t clearly defined. In essence, interior design styles are defined by a combination of specific furniture, lighting, textiles, color palette and decor. I have compiled a list that will help you in determining yours.

Traditional – This style is based around English furniture and its details. It trends toward forms and shapes that are more symmetrical. Its furnishings are detailed, and upholstery often has tufting and skirts.

It is formal in both the look and feel of the fabrics, patterns, and shapes.

Modern - Clean lines, with very little embellishments and an overall neutral palette with some pops of color are the defining traits and form the main elements of a modern home.

Transitional- A fusion of traditional and modern styles. This is my personal favorite as this style has a few classic details in its overall look and feel but the furnishings are more clean-lined and modern in style.

It is updated, more inviting than completely modern style and less fussy than a classic, traditional home.

Mid Century Modern - This style first left its mark in the design world in the 50s and 60s and remains a favorite for the simple, clean-lined and minimalistic furnishings made out of warm woods.

Bohemian - Also known as Boho, this style is all about natural materials and organic elements such as bamboo and rattan. Its style is very layered with a mix 3 | Riche Home and Lifestyle

of natural and saturated, colored patterns and textiles.

Eclectic - A layered style with a hodge-podge of various elements that work well together. It is similar to Boho style but, it is less organic and the styling is much more curated and less casual than Bohemian’s.

Modern Farmhouse – Currently en vogue on the DIY/renovation television programs, less rustic than farmhouse, this style is very cozy and inviting. You’ll see textiles and nature inspired materials being anchored by shades of black, white, and gray.

Industrial - Its main materials are metal, rustic woods, and leather. Industrial spaces feel more masculine for its factory/machine-like elements. It’s a sterile look with a very appealing vibe.

Coastal - Displays the casual ambiance with beach elements. Its main elements are those found in beachy, coastal areas. Soothing shades of blue and green, white-washed woods, and whites define this style. It’s cozy and comfortable.

Contemporary - Does not refer to a specific period of time. Its aesthetics are always of the present day, and the furnishings have clean, understated lines with lush finishes and textiles, giving them a stylish feel.

Hopefully these styles will help you either identify your own interior design style or serve as a guide to stir you in the right direction. The most important thing is that you are working on identifying your style, which in turn will allow you to create a home you are pleased to be in, and enjoy with family and friends.

Describe your art in three words.

Approachable, whimsical, multi-layered Describe yourself in one word. Optimistic What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?

There is an identity with place in New Orleans that surrounds the city with a soul warming embrace. This contact allows art to happen.

I have lived in the Quarter, Marigny, the Irish Channel, and Uptown. Each has given me a wealth of material. Uptown, where I now live, fascinates me with its families, dogs, snowball stands, and neighborhood hangouts.

Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?

I will see a connection between elements or events and that suggests a painting. Or, I might just see a found composition and go with it.

Where do you draw inspiration?

Being alive and interacting with a vital, vibrant, fascinating world is a terrific inspiration.

Who are your artistic influences or gurus?

My artistic influences run the gamut from Charles Sanders Peirce and semiotic cognition to Charlie Ward who once told me—“John, you can’t sell three paintings if you don’t have three paintings.”

In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work?

Born and raised in Memphis I grew up on Rhythm and Blues and Rock and Roll. New Orleans added Jazz, and each of these genres has informed my work both formally and spiritually.
