It brings me great pride and gratitude to share that this month The Mag turns 2! Two years of much love and dedication to this monthly publication. There is a lot of thought and intention on every page. I am so grateful for those who are still here since its inception. Your support is much appreciated.

My intent is to, truly, help each one of you to live in a home that is as nurturing and beautiful as it is functional to your lifestyle. As we each have our own unique lifestyle, I hope that all ideas, inspirations, and recommendations shared inside every issue will encourage you to seek to live a home that will allow you to live well and love where you live.

Understanding the Meaning of Interior Design

A

ccording to Merriam-Webster, the definition of Interior Design is, “The art or practice of planning and supervising the design and execution of architectural interiors and their furnishings.”

Further, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) defines the profession as “the professional and comprehensive practice of creating an interior environment that addresses, protects, and responds to human needs.” The aforementioned definitions may sound like technical jargon, but interior design is much more than simply beautifying a space.

Interior design is about merging beauty with function and improving people’s lives throughout their habitat.

The interior designer, who is an expert with vast knowledge in understanding human behavior, has received specialized training about concepts, principles, and techniques about how interior design is applied in real life. An interior designer will create spaces that are aesthetically pleasing and functional while addressing the issues present, as well as those pointed out by the client. Functionality is a key point in interior design, as frequently, clients are unaware of the lack thereof. An interior designer recognizes and addresses interior dysfunctions while creating a beautiful, inviting, and comfortable space.

The purpose of interior design is to ensure people live in optimized spaces that are beautiful and stylish while enhancing their functionality. Interior designing a space means creating a beautiful room or home that will elevate your lifestyle, affect your mood, and the way you feel and live every day.

Perceptively, the interior designer will assess the space, and ask many questions to uncover your pain points, while intently listening to your wants and needs. Then, they will intentionally address and solve your issues, while creating a gorgeous space or home that reflects your unique lifestyle.

Professional Interior design is about optimizing the function of the space in how it supports and enhances everyday living while maintaining beauty and appeal.

This goal can be achieved in several different ways: by combining selections of a specific fabric, lighting, texture, shape, and color; and by creating balance, symmetry, and harmony for the desired ambiance in the space. For instance, while appropriate selections are made to enhance relaxation in a bedroom, ample seating is strategically placed in living spaces where lots of entertainment happens, or specific fabrics are selected if you have pets and or children. These are general ideas where each set of challenges and requests are specifically assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Further, interior design extends to enhancing the architectural features of a room or home. Adding architectural elements will optimize the appearance of the space, thus supporting the design elements in the room. Crown moldings and wood beams are two notable examples. Their added detail makes the room appear grander, making the furnishings in it feel even better suited for the space.

Now that you know the depths of interior design, you understand when someone says my room or home was interior designed. Remember, an interior designer will design your space or home to beauty and enhance your quality of living.

Local Art Painting Describe your art in three words.

Landscape, Abstract, Musical Describe yourself in one word.

Thoughtful What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What particular part of your immediate Emory Nolan environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?

Most people in this area appreciate and support art and music and most are artists and musicians themselves. I'm inspired by the close relationship between the City and Nature: a marching band winding through the neighborhood Oaks practicing for Carnival; Catsclaw taking over an old home; the constant battle between the roots and roads; watching birds migrating Intracoastal Interlude up and down the Mississippi.

Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?

I usually begin by turning up some music and cleaning the studio. When I can, I also enjoy building and stretching my own canvases. I find this helps me slow down and connect with the piece and the process.

Where do you draw inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere, especially here, but your eyes, ears, and mind must Ibis Fall be open to it. City Park continues to be a never-ending muse for me.
