ABOUT //

Hello, my name is Zsófia Komáromi. I am a 26-year-old architect from Hungary. I live in Budapest and grew up in the suburbs not far from the city.

I completed both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and spent a semester abroad at Sapienza University of Rome, where I broadened my perspective on architecture and urban culture. I graduated in 2024. After that, I spent a few months backpacking in East Asia, and then I began working at an architectural firm.

A defining part of my university years was being an active member of the Építész Szakkollégium / https:// eszak.eu/en /, a self-organized student community. Within this community, we organized multidisciplinary art camps, workshops, and exhibitions, where I learned how to work in a team and share ideas.

Creation has been an essential part of my life since childhood. While architecture remains my primary focus, I am also engaged in other artistic practices, including cinematography, photography, drawing, painting, and hands-on crafts. I am driven by curiosity and a constant desire to explore new forms of expression.

Traveling and spending time in nature are essential parts of my life. These experiences inspire me and shape how I think about space, materials, and atmosphere.

RESEARCH // PROJECT

The field I wish to study and reserch in is a very essential and surpisingly exciting architectural movement: vernacular architecture.

It involves a design and construction process that is not created by architectural firms or according to institutionalized rules, but is based on the knowledge, experience, and everyday needs of the local communities. It develops over a long period of time. It is characterized by the use of locally available materials, simple yet sophisticated structural solutions, and responsiveness to the climate. Vernacular architecture is not a specific style, but a constantly evolving, site-specific way of thinking, where the built environment is created by the community.

Vernacular architecture plays a key role in preserving cultural heritage, as it carries building knowledge that is closely tied to local identity and communal memory. These buildings are not merely living spaces, but also imprints of stories, customs, and social relationships.

With the advance of globalization and a homogenizing architectural approach, this knowledge is gradually being pushed into the background, even though it is precisely local experiences that hold the answers necessary for understanding contemporary social and environmental challenges. Vernacular architecture is therefore not just something from the past, but a living cultural resource, whose preservation and thoughtful reinterpretation remain highly important today.

In my diploma project, I followed a similar approach within architecture by engaging with regional architecture, which means reinterpreting vernacular traditions and integrating them into a contemporary design language. The project was located on my greatgrandmother’s house, which I revitalized by giving new life to the building. Alongside this, I designed a new barn that functions as a restaurant, creating a space where people can gather and enjoy local food in a setting rooted in tradition yet expressed in a contemporary way.

I believe it is essential to study and truly understand what already surrounds us—to appreciate its value and learn from it. I have many ideas for how to interpret and translate the knowledge I will gain, whether through photography, painting, film, exhibitions, or installations. With my experience in multidisciplinary art, I am confident in my ability to find meaningful and appropriate ways to convey these values.

One way or another

Based on a true story…

One day, the feud between two ancient rivals escalates to the point where one of them steals the other’s most cherished treasure, with the aim of stripping his opponent of all his strength and putting an end to their struggle

But the one left weakened does not surrender. Against all odds, they set out on a determined quest, using every means within reach to recreate what was lost and become whole once more..

This short animated film explores the phenomenon of memory distortion. Me and my partner created it using a combination of analog and digital techniques, and we illustrated this duality duringourpresentationby superimposing digital and slide projector images on topofeachother.
