THE NEW ROOKIE ON THONGLOR OFFERS A BOLD AND SOLID PUBLIC SPACE, ENOUGH TO GET DRESSED AND GO OUT FOR “พื้นที่ส่วนกลาง - กรุณารักษาความสะอาดและทิ้งหรือคืนภาชนะ เมือ่ ท่านทานเสร็จแล้ว” ป้ายเล็กๆ บนเคาน์เตอร์บาร์ชน้ั ล่างสุดของ The Commons ผลงานออกแบบของ Department of ARCHITECTURE ขอความร่วมมือกับผู้ ใช้อาคารเอาไว้อย่างนั้น

ฟังเผินๆ ข้อความดังกล่าวดูเหมือนจะขัดแย้งกับทำาเลที่ตั้ง - ย่าน คนมีตังค์ ใจกลางทองหล่อ ที่ต้องมาเก็บเอง ทิ้งเอง แต่แม้ไม่ต้อง ขอความร่วมมือกันชัดๆ ขนาดนี้ ก็คงยากที่ใครจะกินแล้วทิ้งขว้าง ตามอำาเภอใจ สาเหตุหลักนัน้ น่าจะเป็นเพราะ ‘พืน้ ทีส่ ว่ นกลาง’ ของ The Commons ได้รับการออกแบบให้แสดงตัวออกมาอย่างชัดเจน บนพืน้ ฐานของคำาว่า Community มากกว่าคำาว่า Mall โดยพยายาม สร้างพื้นที่ส่วนกลางมากกว่ายัดพื้นที่ขายด้วยการต้อนรับผู้คนผ่าน พืน้ ที่โถงขนาดใหญ่ซง่ึ เป็นหัวใจของโครงการ ผ่านบันไดขนาดยักษ์ ซึ่งเกิดจากการยกและกดพื้นขึ้น-ลงให้เกิดเป็นพื้นที่ย่อยๆ ให้เป็น ลานบ้าง ทีน่ ง่ั บ้าง ชานพักบ้าง เชือ้ เชิญและนำาพาผูค้ นให้เดินขึน้ -ลง เข้าสู่พื้นที่ต่างๆ ของโครงการด้วยความต่อเนื่องของพื้นที่ที่ค่อยๆ ยกขึ้นเป็นขั้นๆ จากชั้น 1 ไปจนถึงชั้น 3 นอกจากนี้ความสำาเร็จ ของการพยายามสร้างพื้นที่ส่วนกลางยังเกิดจากการที่ mass ของ

The message, at first, seems rather contradictory to the location it is placed in - an upscale neighborhood for the rich in the middle of the Thonglor district where people are asked to put away their own plates. But even without the sign, it’s very unbecoming here for someone to eat and throw away whatever they have left without any consideration for others. The main reason is probably that the ‘common ground’ of The Commons is designed to give off the impression of a place where ‘Community’ is prioritized over ‘Mall’ through its attempt to create a communal area rather than jamming the program with commercial spaces, which are replaced with a massive set of stairs, welcoming people into a large communal

อาคารชั้น 4 และ 5 ซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นกล่องสูง 2 ชั้น ถูกยกลอย ขึ้นเพื่อทำาหน้าที่เป็นหลังคากันแดดและฝนให้กบั ลานและโถงด้าน ล่างนอกจากนัน้ พืน้ ทีบ่ างส่วนเช่นครึง่ หนึง่ ของชัน้ 5 ยังถูกจัดให้เป็น ส่วน Show Kitchen และที่นั่งสำาหรับทำาเวิร์กช็อปของร้านผูเ้ ช่า หรือผูส้ นใจในเวลากลางวัน และปรับเปลีย่ นเป็น event bar ได้ ใน เวลากลางคืน ประกอบกับการเจาะพื้นชั้น 4 และ 5 เป็นช่องเปิดที่ ขนาดและตำาแหน่งต่าง ๆ กันนัน้ ยังก่อให้เกิดความต่อเนือ่ ง ทั้งในเชิง การใช้งานและมุมมองของพื้นที่ส่วนกลางตั้งแต่ชั้นล่างสุดไปจนถึง ชั้นบนสุดอีกด้วย ซึ่งเป็นการออกแบบที่ตั้งใจแก้ปัญหาการไม่คอ่ ย มีคนขึน้ ไปใช้พน้ื ทีช่ น้ั บนๆ ของ Community Mall ได้ องค์ประกอบต่างๆ ของอาคารได้รับการออกแบบให้สอดคล้องกับ การสร้างพืน้ ทีส่ ว่ นกลาง เช่นตำาแหน่งเสาจากฝ้าเพดานชัน้ 3 ลงมายัง บันไดยักษ์นน้ั ถูกจัดวางแบบไม่เป็น Grid ทำาให้พน้ื ทีน่ ไ้ี ม่ถกู แบ่งออก เป็นส่วนๆ อย่างชัดเจน แต่กลับเคลื่อนไหลไปตามการจัดวางพื้นที่ ย่อยๆ รวมทัง้ ความพยายามในการแก้ปัญหาความไม่เรียบร้อยของ รูปด้านภายนอกของ Community Mall ทั่วๆ ไปที่มักจะเกิดจาก หน้าร้านของผูเ้ ช่าทีห่ ลากหลายด้วยการออกแบบให้มี second skin ทีเ่ ป็นตะแกรงเหล็กฉีก โปร่งแสง และเปิดรับลมได้อย่างเต็มที่ หุม้ รอบ อาคารชั้น 4 และ 5 อีกทีหนึ่ง โดยตะแกรงเหล็กฉีกถูกออกแบบให้ มี pattern และแสงสว่างในโทน cool white ทีแ่ ตกต่างกันอย่างชัดเจน กับแสงสว่างโทน warm white ภายในร้านส่งผลให้เกิดความสนุกสนาน จากการที่ร้านต่างๆ มีหน้าร้านที่แตกต่างกันไปยังคงอยู่ แต่ได้รับ การจัดการให้เรียบร้อยอยู่ในกรอบเดียวกันเมื่อมองจากภายนอก โครงการ นอกจากนี้ การเปลือยผิวคอนกรีตขององค์ประกอบพื้น

area. At the heart of the project, the space is created from elevation and descent of the ground. Rhythmically, the landscape is subdivided into courtyards, seats and terraces, inviting people to walk up and down as they are led to different spaces of the program. In a continual flow, the space gradually ascents from the first to the third floor with the communal ground as the starting point.

Another attempt to create a communal space is complemented by the elevated box-shaped mass of the 4th and 5th floors. Such mass also functions as the canopy protecting the area from sunlight and rain.

More communal spaces such as half the space of the 5th floor that hosts the Show Kitchen and seats for tenants or interested vendors to organize workshops during the day with the ability to be adapted into an event bar for nighttime social events. The voids on the 4th and 5th floors are in different sizes and locations, bringing about a functional and visual flow to the communal space from the ground to the top floor. Such design solution intends to solve the problem found in most community mall projects where considerably less crowds visit the top floors.

Some of the most prominent features are the position of the columns from the 3rd floor’s ceiling that shies away from the grid convention, resulting in the flexibly divided space that flows along the spatial program. The unorganized finish of the exterior elevation commonly found in this type of building is reconciled by the second skin made of stainless steel wire mesh whose fully ventilated and translucent finish wraps around the mass of the 4th and 5th floors. This particular second skin is designed to possess a unique pattern and cool white tone lighting, which is different from the warm white tone used with the shops’ interior. This way, the design of each retail space and display window can show off its individuality while still being in the same visual frame with others.

In addition, the exposure of the concrete structure and surface become a humble background for the window displays to stand out, ultimately boosting up the energy of the communal space.

บน พืน้ ทีบ่ ริเวณคอร์ทกลาง ชัน้ 1 ซึง่ อยูใ่ จกลางโซน The Market เป็นโซนร้านอาหารที่แชร์ พื้นที่นั่งรับประทานบางส่วน ร่วมกัน TOP THE COURTYARD LOCATED AT THE FIRST FLOOR’S MARKET ZONE WHICH PROVIDES SOME SHARING SPACE FOR DINING

As we walk around the mall, we sense certain disruptions from some of the details of the design, from the super high and spacious staircase that can be a bit nerve wracking or the way another staircase leads us directly to a vehicle lane in the parking lot, and so on. But all and all, we have a pretty delightful time listening to the sound of the Ukulele being played by a Eurasian girl on the ground floor. A bunch of students walk up and down the gigantic staircase while a couple of lovebirds spend their quality time on the bench underneath the stairs of the third floor. A floor down, a salesman is making his pitch to a customer. Moving up, our eyes meet two beautiful girls who attempt to capture the perfect selfie. These behaviors often take place in a nice café or restaurant in a community mall, but here at The Commons, they’re all happening on different corners of the same public ground. On this common ground, we have our own spot where we can sit back and observe dynamic interactions between people. Nevertheless, what we have learnt from projects such as The Commons is that the birth of a decent public space is rare and often comes from the intention of a private investor and an architect’s vision, not from the Government that should be using taxpayers’ money to provide the things we deserve.

ในขณะที่การเกิดขึ้นของธุรกิจร้านกาแฟในบ้านเรากลายเป็นของยอดฮิตที่ บรรดาคนรุน่ ใหม่ (ซึง่ กำาลังเห่อคำาว่า slow life แบบเข้าใจถูกบ้างเข้าใจผิดบ้าง) ต่างพากันเทคะแนนให้ ภาพของร้านกาแฟที่เราพบเห็นได้ทั่วไป โดยเฉพาะ ที่ตั้งอยู่กลางธรรมชาตินั้น กลับหนีไม่พ้นที่จะใช้แต่วิธีการซ้ำาๆ กันในการ สร้างบรรยากาศและประสบการณ์ ให้กับลูกค้า ทว่าท่ามกลางความอิหลักอิเหลื่อกลางธรรมชาติ ที่องค์ประกอบต่างวัฒนธรรมถูกนำามาใช้อย่าง ฟุ่มเฟือย กลุ่มสถาปนิกจาก Secondfloor Architects กลับเลือกนำาเสนอ ทางเลือกที่ต่างออกไปผ่านการออกแบบ Yellow Submarine Coffee Tank ร้านกาแฟสีดาำ ทะมึนที่เลือกซ่อนตัวอย่างสงบเสงี่ยมอยู่กลางธรรมชาติของ เขาใหญ่

As one of the dream career paths of the current generation of young adults (whose interpretations of the so-called ‘Slow Life’ are still very doubtful), the café business has brought us repetitions of styles that hope to hit the jackpot with the right vibe and user experience. As a result of that, we end up seeing many unbecoming attempts to converge built structures with nature, as well as the excessive use of cultural elements.

Secondfloor Architects, however, takes a different approach toward their architectural presentation with Yellow Submarine Coffee Tank. This dark architectural mass rests humbly, embraced by the majestic surroundings of Khao Yai.

Impressed by the site’s natural backdrop, where 80% of the land is occupied by the Indian Mahogany forest, the architect’s execution of the design for Yellow Submarine intentionally simplifies any possible dramatic forms and utilizes such simplicity to accentuate the presence of nature (calling it nature is somewhat a bit unseemly considering that those trees are grown by humans).

With only 100-square-meters of functional space, both concrete and abstract architectural details immediately become the essence of the project.

The lengthwise orientation of the building follows the shape of the land. It stands on the steepest part of the property with a series of ramps used to link the parking space at the rear of the building to the entrance. Creating such a transitional space offers visitors time to contemplate the surrounding nature while the period before users’ direct access with the architecture is expanded. Our expectations as to what’s hidden behind the tall, black wall are imaginatively kindled.

The interior space of Yellow Submarine is divided into three different sections, each with its own scale of spatial experience. The architect team cuts down the existing trees to open one perspective to the scenic spectacle of Khao Yai National Park before visually framing it with two adjacent black walls. Not only is the space a manifestation of nature’s grand presence, but it also causes us to consider and question the differences between nature and this built environment.

The architect’s intention to display varying levels of black color tones within the interior comes into form at the center of the shop, where materials and architectural details are intensely diversified. With the combination of Chinese ink, the sand washed walls look and feel more unique and less dense.

Flooring materials such as sandwashed slabs and loose stones are used to distinguish the perception of the space and the building’s 2-storey-high (6 meter) steel structure, which helps to lessen the compactness of the interior space. The upper part of the building is constructed with bricks where voids are partially created to relieve the wind loads on the building. These openings also welcome in the reflected light from the trees outside, subtly yet tangibly conveying a sense of nature through the attendance of light and sound within the space.

The deepest end of the coffee tank is in complete enclosure; nevertheless, the openness of the overhead plane and the use of black tiles on the walls are the key components the design team employs to transpire the paradoxical element of the space. Interestingly discernible are abstract details within the inner court rendered through reflection of a simulated forest created by human intent, which exists in comparative presence to the surroundings of what seems to be manmade nature.

As a coffee house, Yellow Submarine bears great distinction from other coffee fixers in the Khao Yai perimeter, particularly for the successful collaboration between architecture and its site that gives birth to an entirely new space. The coffee tank shies away from the convention of a thematic design and succeeds to attract users’ interests with its perfectly enclosed space. The obstruction of the surrounding view is intentional, as this significant implication allows us to place our focus on ourselves, the cup of coffee in front of us and the people that we are sharing this space with. While in an ordinary coffee house, we wouldn’t have that many chances to interact with strangers, but the space of Yellow Submarine Coffee Tank makes a conversation held between human beings to be an effortless one.

หากจะพูดถึงความเป็นร้านกาแฟ ก็นับว่า Yellow Submarine มีภาพที่ค่อนข้างขัดแย้งไปจากภาพของร้านกาแฟอื่นๆ ใน บริเวณโดยรอบอยู่พอสมควร โดยเฉพาะการให้สถาปัตยกรรม และที่ตั้งทำางานร่วมกันในการสร้างให้เกิดเป็นพื้นที่ใหม่ แทน การใช้วิธีการเดิมๆ อย่างการสร้างธีมสเปซบางอย่างขึ้นมาใน พื้นที่ รวมไปถึงวิธีการที่ถือได้ว่าสร้างความสนใจให้กับผู้คนได้ มากอย่างการเลือกใช้การปิดล้อมโดยสมบูรณ์ นัยสำาคัญของ การปิดล้อมภาพทิวทัศน์ โดยรอบในลักษณะนี้ ก็เพื่อให้เราได้ กลับไปโฟกัสที่ตัวของเราเอง กาแฟที่อยู่ตรงหน้า และผู้คนที่ อยู่ภายในพื้นที่แห่งนี้ได้มากขึ้น เวลาที่เราไปร้านกาแฟอื่นๆ ทั่วไป เราอาจจะไม่ได้มีโอกาสพูดคุยกับคนที่อยู่ภายในร้านสัก เท่าไหร่ แต่การมายังร้านกาแฟแห่งนี้ สเปซที่นี่จะเปิดโอกาส ให้เราได้คุยกับผู้อื่นมากขึ้น

หลังจากการเติบโตแบบไร้ทิศทางมาเป็นเวลาหลายปี โครงข่าย ความสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมของกรุงเทพฯ ก็ดจู ะเลือนหายไป นับแต่นน้ั การสร้างบ้านสักหลังในเมืองใหญ่แห่งนี้ ก็เบนเข็มไปสูก่ ารสร้างโลก ใบจิ๋วขึ้นมา อย่างบ้านหลังนี้ที่ตั้งอยู่บนที่ดินขนาด 50 ตารางวา บนถนนประชาราษฎร์บาำ เพ็ญที่ทอดยาวคดเคี้ยวท่ามกลางย่าน ที่พักอาศัยที่หนาแน่น ทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของกรุงเทพฯ การใช้ชีวิตในเมืองที่อีเวนต์มากมายผุดขึ้นที่โน่นที ที่นี่ที พร้อมกัน บ้าง เหลือ่ มกันบ้าง ไม่หยุดหย่อน ไม่ตา่ งอะไรกับตอนทีเ่ ราท่องไป ในโลกอินเตอร์เน็ต บ้านในใจของบางคนจึงกลายเป็นสถานทีส่ ว่ นตัว ทีป่ ล่อยให้เขาหรือเธอได้มีโอกาสหลบออกจากความวุน่ วายของเมือง ที่มุ่งหน้าสู่ความทันสมัยอย่างรวดเร็ว เหลือบ้านเอาไว้เป็นที่ว่าง เพื่อให้เรามีเวลาอยู่กับตัวเองบ้าง เพราะทุกวันนี้ การเชื่อมต่อหรือ ตัดขาดตัวเองจากโลกภายนอกไม่ใช่เรือ่ งใหญ่อกี ต่อไป ตราบทีค่ ณ ุ ยังสามารถเอือ้ มมือไปหยิบอุปกรณ์สอ่ื สารสักชิน้ ขึน้ มา กดคลิกเดียว การนัดปาร์ตี้กินข้าวสักมื้อก็เรียบร้อย เจ้าของบ้านหลังนี้ คุณไชยชุมพล วัฑฒกานนท์ บอกกับเราว่า บ้านของเขาไม่ได้เตรียมไว้สาำ หรับจัดงานเลี้ยงสังสรรค์แบบจริงจัง เพราะเขาคิดว่าถ้าจะจัดงานอะไรแบบนัน้ สถานทีค่ วรจะเป็นนอกบ้าน ช่างดูเป็นคำาพูดทีช่ ดั เจนตรงใจดีจริงๆ ใช่ไหม? จากนัน้ เราก็ได้รู้ เรือ่ งราวของความสัมพันธ์ทน่ี านๆ จะได้เห็นกันสักที ระหว่างเจ้าของ บ้านกับสถาปนิก - อภิชาติ ศรีโรจนภิญโญ หนึ่งในสองผู้ก่อตั้ง Stu/D/O Architects ทั้ง 2 คนเป็นเพื่อนกันมาตั้งแต่สมัยเรียน มหาวิทยาลัย คนแรกปัจจุบันกลายเป็นภูมิสถาปนิก ส่วนคนหลัง เป็นสถาปนิก จะว่าไปแล้ว บ้านหลังนี้ก็ถือเป็นผลพวงของความ คุ้นเคยรู้ ใจกันของเพื่อน 2 คน

THE HOUSE SPRINGS OUT OF THE GROUND FROM A SINGLE POINT OF GRAVITY, A JACARANDA TREE IN A TINY COURTYARD ล่าง ชีวิตประจำ�วันวนอยู่รอบ คอร์ทต้นศรีตรัง บันไดท�ง ขึ้นบ้�นท�งซ้�ย กับส่วน รับแขกและนั่งเล่นท�งขว� BOTTOM EVERYDAY LIFE HAPPENS AROUND THE COURT WITH THE JACARANDA TREE, THE ENTRANCE STAIRCASE ON THE LEFT AND THE LIVING SPACES ON THE RIGHT

Following years of urban sprawl, the social fabric of Bangkok has disappeared so that the construction of a single house in such a metropolis has moved toward the creation of a singular micro cosmos. The house is situated on Pracharat Bamphen road, a tortuous road in a high-density neighborhood of the northeastern zone of Bangkok. Living in the city where a number of events happen here and there simultaneously and continuously as if one is surfing the Internet, the house becomes an intimate place in which its inhabitants feel free to withdraw themselves from the chaotic movement of the rapidly modernized metropolis. Today, being connected or disconnected to the world is no longer a big deal as long as your device remains somewhere within arm’s reach.

A dinner meeting can be done in one click! Let alone a house finding function as a space where one can stay at ease with oneself.

The owner of the house, Chaichoompol Vathakanon, revealed that his house does not mean to support any serious socialized activities. If there will be any event, it will be held beyond his fence. A clear statement, isn’t it?

Then the unusual story of the reciprocal relationship between the client and architect, Apichart Srirojanapinyo one of two principals of Stu/D/O Architects, came out for they have been friends since they were university students. The former became a landscape architect while the latter an architect. The house, thus, is a final product of these particular sympathies.

The spaces are stacked vertically so that the small but lively court and an elegant open space are possible. Walking up and down in the house does not give us any strong feeling of being in a box, as the inside and outside blend together through several huge glass panes in relation to the spatial articulation of the two main elements of the central gravity.

Even though the design scheme is a tall and fairly solid mass, the house elicits a strong contrast between perceiving it from the outside and living in it, thanks to the playful balconies. Some are small and some so spacious, both of which relate to the courtyard or the green space nearby the site. They actually draw breath to all spaces inside. The entire house will become even more charming in the years to come, as Tamarind trees will be planted in front of the house, scattering delicate and fine green leaves over the sharp white concrete mass.

The textures of the two trees selected by the owner soften the overall impression of the house and render it more enjoyable.

From the outside, the house looks like a living camera obscura, as if “the house-skull quietly contemplates the tree through the porthole-eye,” like Michel Serres wrote in his book ‘Five Senses: A Philosophy of Mingled Bodies’ (2008:146-48). But living in a place is very different from seeing each image of the outside world through a single window. Caring too much about visual perspective can bring about photogenic spaces, but that is not the only

matter that should receive our attention when building an intimate space. The pleasure of lingering in a space until the next moment arrives and pushes you to do something else does really matter. After we move inside the house, its appearance turns to offer a subtle play amongst simple and clean architectural details, compact and functional spaces, generous open space and an apt structural solution. While the rest of the house uses simple post and beam in reinforced concrete, beside the Jacaranda tree stands the only fine steel column in the house.

Nowadays, contemporary Thai architects are still searching for their own way to express themselves and try to bring new meaning to the ever-changing world. The broken social and urban fabric may make us long for the pleasant past, but it also allows for us to create and explore the new possibilities and, sometimes, to transform ourselves to be even more chaotic. Just be positive and seize the right moment when it arrives, it sounds optimistic, doesn’t it? Why not? As we are at somewhere, in the beginning period, the adventurous road lies ahead, and the search continues, please stay tuned.

ในวันนี้ สถาปนิกไทยยังคงค้นหาแนวทางในการแสดงออกของตัวเอง และพยายามสร้างความหมายใหม่ๆ ให้กับโลกที่เปลี่ยนแปลงอยู่ ตลอดเวลา โครงข่ายความสัมพันธ์ของสังคมและเมืองที่ขาดจาก กันบ้าง แยกย่อยบ้างนัน้ อาจจะทำาให้เราโหยหาถึงอดีตทีห่ อมหวาน ในขณะเดียวกันมันก็ให้โอกาสเราสร้าง และสำารวจความเป็นไปได้ ใหม่ๆ และในบางครั้ง เราก็ยังสามารถแปลงรูปเปลี่ยนร่างตัวเรา เองให้มันดูวุ่นวายโกลาหลเข้าไปอีก แค่เรายังมองให้เห็นด้านที่ เป็นประโยชน์ และฉวยชั่วขณะที่ใช่ในวันที่มันมาถึงตรงหน้า ฟังดู แล้ว มันช่างเป็นวิธีของคนมองโลกในแง่ดีเหลือเกินใช่ไหม ก็แล้ว ทำาไมมันจะไม่ได้ล่ะ ในขณะที่เราเองก็ยังอยู่ตรงไหนสักแห่งของ การเริ่มต้นบทใหม่ ทางที่ชวนหัวหกก้นขวิดพาดลงอยู่ตรงหน้า และการค้นหายังไม่หยุด ฉะนั้นโปรดรอตามฟังข่าวกันให้ดีๆ

An image of colorful yellow flowers on the pixel art wall says a big hello as soon as we push open the glass door and walk into Supanniga Eating Room, a Thai restaurant located in a quiet neighborhood of Sathorn Soi 10. This shophouse turned restaurant has a team of designers from Onion taking care of its design. They explain the concept of the project as an attempt to camouflage the box-like space commonly found in most shophouses and recreate new experiences for users with different methods and aesthetic approaches for each floor of the building.

Nevertheless, on every floor, what one can find is the fabrication of interior and exterior connections through the visibility of the outdoor ambience and presence of natural light in the interior space.

The ground floor creates a sense of space similar to those under the elevated floor of a traditional Thai house. The details of the design and utensils give off a home-like vibe while creating a sense of relaxation and friendliness.

The kitchen is situated on the second floor, which automatically lessens the space to accommodate customers.

The design team works out this dilemma by linking the area with the porch, creating a semi-open/outdoor space for smoking tables as well as an area for those who wish to enjoy their drinks and small talk outside. The area overlooks the view of the neighborhood and is visually linked to a nearby exhibition corner where artworks are displayed. The top floor is reconciled into a space reminiscent of a sunlit attic with the overall ambience

Corrugated, galvanized iron sheets are used for the ceiling for their ability to reflect and create an eccentric refraction of light and shadow due to the complicated surface and corners of the roof structure.

The design of space and overall decoration reflects the personality of the homemade food from Khon Kaen being served at the restaurant in the liveliest manner. The team picks up on contemporary everyday-life cultural details and uses them with the interior space such as the locals’ ability to redefine the beauty and functionality of ordinary objects. Among the few are the use of corrugated, galvanized iron sheets where the details of the folded materials are harmonized into rhythmic and flowing visuals, or hundreds of spools that are arranged into a pattern of yellow silk cotton flowers on the walls. The designers intentionally left several other symbols and gimmicks within the space, enhancing a sense of discovery as each trace is unfolded, whether it be the way yellow is used to represent the color of the Supanniga flower (yellow silk cotton) or how the story of weaving is told through the presence of different materials (threads), apparatus (loom), methods (pulling, weft, interlocking, tying) and the formation of textile patterns (pixel).

In addition, we are able to see a stylish combination of modernity and traces of local craftsmanship in almost every piece of the furniture specifically designed for the project. The pattern on the tables’ surfaces is inspired by the ‘reed’ (an important component of a loom), while the detail of the wall mimics the details of local carpentry.

Other details are such as the stone tabletops fashioned in a shape and form that reminds us of those commonly used in rural homes.

Long story short, the ‘Thai digital locality’ style that the design team of Onion tries to define is essentially the story of ordinary rustic characteristics where creative design concepts are straightforwardly expressed. It is simple, uncomplicated and easy-going stories, told using modern materials and an international design language. Attentively harmonizing the different points of focus, these stories and compositions set in the different spaces of the building communicate with and awaken our visual perception. This is achieved not only by the diversity of materials, but also the details of mechanisms, installation and fabrication. Generally speaking, these aesthetic elements become the sensory stimulation, complementing our delectable experience of grandma’s recipes for authentic Thai food.

เมื่อเอ่ยชื่อของ คัดสรร ดีมาก สิ่งแรกที่ทุกคนนึกถึงคือบริษัท ออกแบบตัวอักษร แต่ในเกือบหนึ่งปีที่ผ่านมา เราเริ่มเห็นชื่อของ คัดสรร ดีมาก ในฐานะส�านักพิมพ์ที่จัดท�าหนังสือออกมาหลายเล่ม ทั้งที่เป็นต�ารา (ฉบับแปล) ด้านการออกแบบตัวอักษร รวมผลงาน ออกแบบและเนื้อหาจากการท�างานของบริษัท รวมบทความจาก เว็บไซต์ของคัดสรร ดีมาก จนถึงหนังสือแสดงแนวคิดของ นักออกแบบไทยที่มีชื่อเสียง

We’re sure that most people remember Cadson Demak as a typeface design studio. But over the past year, we have begun to see the name given as publisher for a good number of publications ranging from a font design textbook (translated version) that brings together the company’s retrospective and a selection of essays from Cadson Demak’s website to a book that presents a collection of visions of reputable Thai designers.

Nevertheless, Cadson Demak’s Anuthin Wongsunkakon says that it is really not that surprising for the status of font designer and publisher to collide, considering the fact that during the time prior to digital printing, a publisher or printing house hired staff with typesetting expertise and abilities to actually design fonts. In many cases, publishers become the initiators of new developments of fonts to serve the growing production of media. But that is still not the main reason behind the studio’s new role as a publisher. The organizational structure of Cadson Demak has a Content Management unit overseeing the studio’s creative output, which basically revolves around the administration of a body of knowledge in academic, design and other dimensions that can be beneficial for designers and the general public. Apart from printed publications, the works come in different forms of media, encompassing a wide range of activities such as lectures and workshops.

Throughout its 15 years, Cadson Demak’s production of knowledge has been considerable and continual, utilizing different platforms of communication. The oldest article published on the website anuthin.org dates back to February 1999, whereas essays with relatively close publication dates are brought together in the book, Documented Lectures of Anuthin Wongsunkakon: 10 articles of private studies on graphic design (published

by Corporation 4d back in 2000). In retrospect, we have witnessed many changes in Thailand’s graphic design industry. But one thing that is shockingly the same is the lack of textbooks and translated versions of internationally recognized publications in Thai language within the academic arena. The fact that Cadson Demak, as a publisher, chooses to publish a translation of the prominent typography textbook, Stop Stealing Sheep & find out how type works by Erik Spiekermann while making its

Make no mistake, this is a deteriorating time for print media, but it is undeniable that textbooks are still very much needed and validated as an official form of academic knowledge. Perhaps, having more graphic design textbooks in Thai language could open the door for outsiders to gain a better understanding of the discipline. It will also allow for everyone to comprehend the role and connection between graphic design and other fields of study be it marketing, history, economics or social science. Waiting behind that door may be the world where clients and designers reach a new level of mutual understanding and respect while designers are able to develop their communication skills through reading and writing, hence, the possibility for their communication with the general public becoming more accessible and efficient.

With its books being viewed as too expensive, which contradicts their objective to promote design awareness among the general public, Cadson Demak’s team still strongly affirms that everything has been critically analyzed to the point where the studio is able to figure itself all out. The expensive price is essentially a reflection of the actual capital and related to factors such as minimum order and stock management. The team does not believe in the reduction of production quality in order to obtain a cheaper selling price or significant increase of sales, as taking such position could potentially jeopardize support gained from the design-conscious readers who will shy away from less beautiful books.

In conclusion, Cadson Demak expects the content to indirectly influence people’s understanding of design while generating greater benefits for the main business.

As for the consumers, acknowledging and understanding the actual capital and intellectual values of a book they buy are also crucial.

Jorge Pensi, a Barcelona-based designer, mentioned in an interview at BODW 2015 in Hong Kong that, “Obstacles lead to good designs, and the problem solving process is where a work is formulated and becomes tangible.” This particular quote goes perfectly well with ‘Found-Wood Working Project,’ an exhibition that showcases different approaches to the recycling of wood found in the area around Nangrong district in Buriram. Limitations, conditions and obstacles are all effective stimulators that ultimately bring about new applications and solutions including new ways of thinking behind the conceptions of much more diverse and creative end results.

Some of the main problems are the humidity of unprocessed wood, including the size of green wood that prevents the material from being ready-to-use.

Nevertheless, such unprocessed qualities come with certain elements (which may be absent from the processed material). These special characteristics allow for designers to explore and experiment with new possibilities. ‘Overgrown’ by Sarin Tgamol uses

DESIGN bark from several types of wood by boiling the material before extracting the colors into a spectrum of brown pantone. The colors are poured onto a thick piece of linen cloth creating a new, naturally derived interior decoration material. The method is somewhat a part of an ongoing experimental process of wood scrap weaving created by Ada Chirakranont, which offers a different take on and perception of the material when compared to common carpentry and woodwork.

It seems that while designers’ personal interests are the influencing factors, some individually choose and utilize one of the limitations as the subject of their designs whereas some decide to ‘overlook’ the obstacles and use recycled wood simply as a material. This particular approach can be seen in the process by which the ‘Paperweight’ sculpture by wood artist, Pakpoom Wittayaworakan is made. The artist intends for the round shape of the sculpture to create a sense of relaxation for users while the experience of the making of the piece helps to shape his own mind and spirit. For Wittayaworakan, that piece of wood is “representative of inner feelings or the conversation between humans and wood.” For ‘Nakar-Branch Watch,’ Apirak Buranajade turns barely usable wood branches into a collection of watches where the size of each watch varies according to the size of each found branch.

The piece indicates certain values conceived from the design process where simplicity and uniqueness are present without reliance on any abstract implications.

The ‘Nobi’s Axis’ bench by Ratthee Phaisanchotsiri is an exemplification of equilibrium and the conveyance of abstract messages achieved through design. The industrial designer elaborates upon the message he wishes to send out as “two sides of the coin between the superficial glory of Capitalism and the imperfect and, often times, overlooked, beauty of nature.” The idea is materialized into a wood/acrylic bench that reflects the binary of oppositions between nature and industrialism.

There are several other interesting designs that are not mentioned in this article. Generally speaking, having designers from different fields of design working under one subject matter can result in wonderful reflections of their different ways of thinking, perceptions towards materials and working processes. Individually, these elements are varied by each designer’s personality as we notice the strengths and weak points of design practitioners from different disciplines. Nevertheless, a flaw does not necessarily need to be fixed and a stain does not always have to be polished because it is, in a sense, a designer’s inherent identity and signature hidden in the work he creates.

Having a laboratory to turn ideas into reality is not as easy as it seems. Perhaps this is why it took Eko Nugroho and Galeri Salihara almost two years to put together “Landscape Anomaly,” his first solo exhibition in Indonesia in four years.

The gallery’s seamless oval-shaped space seemed to have presented its own challenge to the artist, known for his work with and on diverse media such as murals, embroideries, paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, and tapestries.

He welcomed the challenge with open arms, creating over twenty new works presented boldly and decisively as an array of interconnected ideas, protests, humor, colors, shapes, and mediums. The exhibition curator, Nirwan Dewanto hailed the effervescent nature of the ambiance that is simultaneously harmonious and discordant, as a carnival or a celebration.

Eko Nugroho is an Indonesian artist whose artistic history grew and flourished Post-Reformation. His ability to come up with endless outstanding concepts, to his daring use of mediums and ability to apply humorous ‘cushions’ to his sharply-aimed protests has cemented his international career. His works are very much influenced by the cultures and life of the communities around him, as well as comics as a means of expression. In “Landscape Anomaly,” we can trace his sympathetic understanding of the social issues, political turmoil, and economic problems that are relevant to the situation in Indonesia and around the world.

One of the artworks that made a clear jab at contemporary behavior is ‘Ancient Series’, comprised of four flexed arms arranged in a row on the wall as though precious hunting trophies. With one of them holding a drawn sword and another one passing judgment, he has described the ‘spirit’ of the era. However, the selfie stick that also appears in this work serves to mirror back our own daily conduct, even when we are online.

Other works discuss the issue of change and loss due to power or authority. How an agrarian culture has been eroded by modernization, where farmers can only stare at the empty promises of prosperity on a land they no longer own. Or the pyramid of forty gas cylinders, each

donning a pair of eyes representing persons of various ethnic groups in Indonesia, serves as a portrait of the monopoly of energy that has divided ethnicities into different levels, based on the amount of cash in their bank accounts.

Not just context, the mural that he made over a fortnight on one part of the gallery’s walls, demonstrates Eko Nugroho’s sensitivity to colors and forms. Hybrid beings—each form brilliantly executed—present the absurd combination of deep sea and outerspace, elaborated with Javanese ‘batik kawung’ or scale-motifs.

This landscape completes the “land-bound landscape” that dominates the rest of the exhibition space.

In its role as initiator, Salihara did not only provide its gallery space to be transformed but also facilitated the expansion of his artistic reach, through a fashion collaboration. This collaborative project, running alongside the exhibition, is perhaps the first of its extent in Indonesia. Unlike when his painting ‘Republik Tropis’ (2013) was adapted into Louis Vuitton limited edition scarves, this time Eko Nugroho was involved in every stage of the collaboration. His very unique visuals were responded to and further developed by the designer duo, Ari Seputra and Inneke Margarethe from one of Indonesia’s foremost fashion brands, MajorMinor. The collaboration resulted in two fashion collections that are sophisticated, spontaneous, and dynamic, with feminine colors and impressive details.

Eko Nugroho was raised in a crowded urban village (kampong) along the banks of Kali Code in Yogyakarta.

He lives in the city still, though his daily experiences are now far removed from the din and chaos of his kampong. From his studio by a paddy field on the outskirts of Yogyakarta, he has immersed himself in the stream of global art, presenting solo exhibitions at, among others— Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2012) and Singapore’s Tyler Print Institute (2013).

He was one of the highlighted artists at the Indonesian Pavilion of the 55th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. Recently, he created a mural at Frankfurt’s Kunstverein to support Indonesia’s participation as Guest of Honor at Frankfurt Book Fair 2015.

Dutch photographer Iwan Baan’s images of our built environment picture architecture as far from inanimate entities – calling upon the ways in which buildings and cities are utilized, transformed and ultimately brought to life by inhabitants to allow for their stories to be told.

“My background has always been in more documentary photography, so for me it is very important to show what happens in these places, what the consequences of a building being in a specific place are and not just an iconic image of an isolated building that could be anywhere.

I am interested in the story of the city, what people do there and how the city around the project evolves.”

One of Baan’s recent stories told finds setting in Yekaterinburg, Russia a city characterized by its scenery rendered by constructivist heritage, seemingly unchanged in form since the 1920s and 30s but completely reenvisioned in terms of the plots and functions that unfold within. Example being a large community building that was once an important constructivist monument which Baan captures as backdrop to a dance class for senior citizens, or the former water tower which, now completely derelict, serves as a utopian canvas for graffiti and a playground for children. “Everything was just as it was at that time, but the activities happening there are completely different these days. These places evolve over time and, often, things change and are re-enacted.

Many of these places still make very much sense in today’s society.”

Through Baan’s way of looking that places people and setting on par, his recent ‘Anonymous Histories’ project for the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial depicts the city itself as supporting character amongst the living personalities it is inhabited by. “I spent about ten days in the city, photographing what Chicago is these days.

Petroleum (BP) has refineries and all the steel mills are around. In the 1920’s, a workers’ village was established there where people live in the midst of this incredible industrial area. People have their small gardens and a whole different life, but industry is still connected there and going through every part of the city as a kind of everyday background for city life, people having their morning walks between these industrial monuments.”

These moments caught within and between functioning as the source of dialogue upon which the story of a place relies.

“What interests me really is all these models that you can’t really plan for, capturing these moments and how people basically try to improve their living environment and make something special; you see that from the starchitects to people who are building things out of pure necessity. To see that whole scope and what is happening in the world today is a big part of my work and it also brings us back to reality after often seeing all the sort of star-struck things, how you can do things with totally minimal things. I try to be really a fly on a wall, just being present there for a couple of days and seeing what happens when people sort of don’t see you anymore - that is when things start to happen and you can really document what is happening in a place.”

The first was Bierut’s boss and mentor who taught him to be a true designer; the latter was a fellow designer who taught him the unbounded ability of design that could change the world.

How to is the continuum of Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design (2007) and the first official monograph of Bierut himself. With his roles as a partner of Pentagram New York, a graphic designer, a professor, a writer and an editor, the 35 years of his career are represented through 35 of Bierut’s most notable projects. Named in different how to methods, each project illustrates the specific nature of the client and the work itself. The chapters range from how to be a graphic designer in the middle of nowhere (Introduction) and how to think with your hands (40 years of hand drawing on notebooks), how to create identity without a logo (Brooklyn Academy of Music), how to design 24 logos all at once (MIT Media Lab), how to pack for a long flight (United Airlines) and how to shut up and listen (New World Symphony).

Each how to provides a description and process of that particular project from briefing and maintaining relationships with the customer to the creative and design process, presentation and ultimately the finished work that later becomes widely recognized.

The book features essays, sketches, photographs of the presentation and the final works in Bierut’s mood and tone, encompassing projects in almost every form of graphic design be they logo, poster, book, publication, packaging, signage, and so on. It’s literally everything you see written on the cover. We’re guessing that in this case, we CAN judge the book by its cover.

The first series of the magazine strives to expand the landscape of architectural academia in an unconventional approach and manner. RAD makes its debut with the content from the first ten issues of Volume where they translate interesting, cutting-edge subject matter into Japanese language with their own points of view featured in the translator’s comments.

What LOG/OUT does pretty well, presentation-wise, is the way it executes the layout of the graphic work and the content in the zine format. Not only is LOG/OUT able to differentiate itself structurally with the layout and printing material, its content (selected from the original magazines) also excels in terms of its attempt to critique social and political issues along with the existence of architecture. RAD’s picks range from the philosophy professed in the first issue of Volume (Beyond), which implicates the role of architecture in a larger sense than being just a building or a house, or the discussion on the power of architecture on society in the 5th-7th issues (The Architecture of Power), to the influences of political and social interventions in different dimensions on architecture in the 10th issue (Agitation). At the very same time, LOG/OUT challenges readers by asking them to contemplate the role of the “architect and architecture under the current social, political, economic and cultural environment.”

(Blackstar) is the name of the last album by the recently passed David Bowie. The legendary artist went through such a continual and artistically inspiring transformation in terms of both his image and music throughout the 50 years of his career before leaving the world only two days after the album was released on 10 January 2016.

For an artist whose career was as long and creatively diverse as his, selecting a new designer to design every new album’s cover could be the way to go. Instead, Bowie chose Jonathan Barnbrook to serve as his collaborator over the last 15 years. The prominent graphic designer is reputable for his repertoire of communication design works and their profound social references. The two worked together on four of Bowie’s albums (plus one compilation album).

With the exception of Nothing Has Changed, the compilation album released in 2014, the Barnbrook’ designs of cover art for Bowie’s albums from 2002 to 2016 seem to share a certain continuity, and that is the minimization of Bowie’s own presence. Such tendency begins with Heathen (2002) where the cover features Bowie’s face and the word ‘heathen’ written upside down. The illustration for the sleeve is full of the destruction/ violation of sacredness and the value of art, which seems to be unanimous with the album’s name. For Reality (2003), the cover features Bowie’s unfamiliar visual depiction as envisioned by artist Rex Ray. The illustration is accompanied by a typeface and other compositions, collectively expressing a sense of rawness just like one can find in his music with a photograph of Bowie in the same attire and posture hidden inside.

For ‘The Next Day’ (2013), Barnbrook puts a white frame on the cover of ‘Hero’ (1977), one of Bowie’s greatest albums with one of the most memorable works of cover art.

It’s the manifestation of Bowie leaving his past behind and moving on to the future and new possibilities. With his last album, ‘Blackstar’ (2016), we see only a black star with white background for the CD cover. As for the vinyl edition, the design cuts a star out of the black sleeve so that the record inside is visible. At the bottom, a cluster of geometric forms was placed and, after an attentive stare, we become more aware that it is actually the logotype of the name BOWIE. The tranquility and simplicity perfectly encapsulate the album’s lyrical narrative about the confrontation with death.

We’ve seen some amazing relationships and collaborations between graphic designers and musicians, be they New Order and Peter Saville, the Pet Shop Boys and Mark Farrow or Storm Thorgerson and Pink Floyd. However, while these designers are known for their works with several other artists, Barnbrook’s creative contribution to the music industry is much less often. Maybe that is one of the reasons why Bowie and Barnbrook’s collaborations are so special. The two were introduced after the design Barnbrook did for Damien Hirst’s book caught the eye of Iman, Bowie’s wife.

Barnbrook was later asked to design Iman’s book before he began working with Bowie on their first collaboration. Perhaps the fact that the singer knew of the designer’s works from the books he designed is explanation for the specially significant presence of typefaces in every work of cover art they realized together, where Barnbrook would use his own fonts, and sometimes a brand new one that hadn’t been used anywhere previously, for Bowie’s album covers.

To design album covers for the artist with one of the most unique and original styles and images in the history of music, the easiest and most marketable approach would be to make the best use out of his mesmerizing persona. But Barnbrook and Bowie chose to walk upon a more challenging path. They intentionally lessened the presence of the singer while incorporating the use of visuals, typefaces and symbols to connote the lyrical essence of each album.

Whether such continuity is intentional or not, what we are able to learn from these great works is that being whatever you want to be and having the courage to restlessly experiment and contribute something new is more important than the presentation of one’s individuality. Even if that individual is David Bowie…
