art4d: For our readers that are new to COLORS, it would be good to explain what the importance of diversity is for you?

Patrick Waterhouse: COLORS began 23 years ago and was based on this very simple powerful equation of looking at globalization. It was a celebration of diversity and it was called at the time the ‘MTV of global culture.’ The question that I had when I began was the fact that the central premise that it is based on is more true than it was 23 years ago, the world is even more globalized and interconnected and I suppose the question I had was is diversity and globalization just a good thing? I don’t think that it is necessarily because we have lots of unforeseen consequences, whether that is social and political, how the market works or issues on the disparity of income.

The issues that I have been making were based around the idea of Survival Guides. By taking that vernacular, both in terms of a visual reference and the deconstruction of issues, it allows us to put the audience in the center of the story. We are not just showing people things but actually telling them how to do things and that has been the underlying approach to give the magazine some continuity, which is what I felt COLORS needed. It is an in-depth engagement with different issues where each one has a different idea behind it, so it is that balance between something with continuity and something which changes depending on the concept.

art4d: The angles from which you are looking at these different topics are different to what we are seeing in the mass, in terms of how you document the human condition, people’s behaviors and emotions in a social and political context?

PW: Yes, it is an engagement with social issues but it is very visually driven. It comes from serious research, the ideas that it engages with, but it ends up being something which is as important in a visual medium as it is in the written, so it is that marriage between both of those things. art4d: I find that when I read the new issues, the spirit of the old ones are still present. There is also more information in the new issues too?

PW: Yes, the word counts are bigger and there are more bits. There are footnotes and longer articles and that was a very conscious decision. In a way COLORS has got a very big history, so I can’t put that out of my mind. Tibor Kalman has defined it in the past and so I just imagine that we are where we are today, but then when you look back at what you’ve done you realize that the past has influenced you.

There is a DNA that links those to now but it is quite subconscious.

art4d: So who is the creative director of COLORS? PW: I am. Well, the honest answer is that I changed the title because people kept asking me who the editor-in-chief was but there is none, and that’s the truth because I don’t come from a magazine background. You’re given a huge amount of freedom and the only thing that has to be is a masthead and it existing as a printed magazine. The way that I look at it, it is built on a trust relationship based on a set of humanistic values. People imagine that there is this fixed editorial structure but there isn’t. It is editorially as free as it can be. I work with a team of people, which I’ve built, some of which are very good friends of mine I’ve worked with in the past as well. I see it more like making a book than a magazine or an in-depth project about something. art4d: How do you develop each theme for each issue? Do they stem from personal interest?

PW: I have a long list of themes. The theme is where I see it as being a relationship between looking at larger global trends, issues which are relevant, but not part of the daily news cycle, so looking at things that in some ways almost capture the zeitgeist. For example, one issue was on the market but really it is looking at economic principles or how free market dominance may have led to ethical questions.

But it’s not a story about the financial crisis, it’s looking at it from a wider perspective so I think there is that more highminded aspect to it which is more conceptual and then there is something which is very practical which is in knowing that you can get a certain kind of imagery from the particular subjects. It is the marriage of those two, which often can turn very superficial to say that you need to get a certain

75 art4d: I have read an article in Creative Review in 2011 where there was a piece about COLORS that said it was time to say goodbye.

PW: I saw that too. That was before I was there. art4d: Did you agree with that article?

PW: You are really putting me on the spot here! Well, I think there were elements that were true about it, but I think that there is much more variety of ups and downs, which meant that it was quite schizophrenic and it lost its continuity.

That is not to say that it didn’t have elements that weren’t brilliant along the way. I think what we have tried to do now is make something that is a body of work with a clear editorial light, so having a stronger vision of what the thing should be, hopefully you feel that and know that while they are all very different it still holds an identity.

kind of imagery, but actually you need both. You need to know that there is a visually interesting aspect to the subject as well as it being something that is important and worth talking about. art4d: How do you approach an issue?

PW: We’ve tried to make something that has some continuity, but also is conceptually coherent for the issue, so you feel like it is asking some fundamental questions, but also when you step back you can see it as being part of a larger body of work. I spend a lot of time trying to get the big picture right and also think about the different angles from which you can approach an issue. There is usually a more conceptual element to it, but then maybe if someone like Cosimo and Luiz interviews someone and the interview is great and says it all, we then drop what was planned and we just go with the interview because it is already inherently interesting, so it changes all the time.

art4d: We recognize that aesthetics is very important to COLORS, how do you create and maintain this vision?

PW: I mean in all of COLORS we’ve tried to make sure that it has a method-based approach that ensures continuity in our voice. So even the photography tries to have a very consistent lens that the photographer uses and the way in which the picture is taken so that it feels like it has a COLORS style. All the writings as well, you know it goes through a big process to feel coherent like one thing, so in some ways you lose the flair of the individual to making something which I believe makes it more powerful. It is something that is very coherent as a body of work and that even goes down to the questions and the way in which the questions are asked. There is a core team of people and the contributors usually will find a story and then there is someone within the informal networks of COLORS and Fabrica who will go to the location or get someone locally to do it.

art4d: Any particular story or project in the past that you feel is still relevant for you today?

PW: There are periods in the past where I think that some really interesting things have happened because there is so much freedom; you are always going to have a bit of a rollercoaster kind of up and down thing. But I think when they were done, the Tibor Kalman issues were amazing because they were doing something new. I think that there were these two editors Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, who did a series on community, which I think still hold up as being an amazing body of work. I think that the good periods for me have been thought about with a larger idea, something that has got a slightly bigger picture than just dealing with one specific issue.

art4d: COLORS is still funded by Benetton and related to Fabrica?

PW: Yes, we are still funded by Benetton. I mean COLORS existed before Fabrica. It existed and it moved around, it was in Rome, I think it was in Paris, it was in New York. And I think it came to Fabrica, even left Fabrica and went back to New York and then came back again. art4d: But it was always owned by Benetton?

PW: Benetton has always owned both of them. I began being in Fabrica so in a way there is an obvious relationship.

Had I not gone to Fabrica I would probably never be doing this so you are in the environment that it is being made but it is its own thing and it is about getting an idea which pulls you down a path and feeds the research because all the big themes can be approached from a thousand different ways and it is about getting something that unlocks the subject that you are looking into – like Transport. You could have approached it in many different ways. You could have done it about the transport infrastructure or traffic systems of Bangkok for example. It is the idea of looking at issues around people and people who are making their own forms of transport that gives you a very specific lens to look through, which pulls you down a line of research and thinking.

PW: No. Benetton is the sponsor of the magazine and I wanted to make it as much like a book as possible and value COLORS as being something different and not try and just make it look like a magazine for the sake of making it look like a magazine.

PW: No, it’s more expensive. It has gone up a lot. Before it was 5 Euros now it is 13 Euros.

art4d: How many languages do you translate to?

PW: Every issue is translated from English into French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. All of them have to be laid out and typeset and laying out all of the languages is a huge logistical job. The Chinese and the Korean editions are printed and distributed in China by IdN. We do editions of all of those languages. Distribution has although been slightly difficult recently in many other countries but it is improving.

art4d: I think it is a bit unfair to talk about just COLORS, you do more than just that, what are you working on at the moment?

PW: I’ve just published a book, which is the end of a six year project about a building in Johannesburg.

art4d: Just illustrations then?

PW: Yes, it was just illustrations but it was more about spending a year working slowly with a friend of mine, Walter Hutton, who wrote the notation, read the book aloud and I would sit and draw. I’ve also been doing workshops based on the Survival Guides and doing Survival Guide Notebooks but it is much more workshops where I have done them in various different places around the world. I did one in Brazil with street kids and it is, I suppose, making them the authors of the Survival Guides. The great thing about the notebook was that it was absolutely anything, which made it very simple and beautiful as an idea. art4d: Will this be put into an exhibition at all?

PW: Yes, and that is also where Fabrica can get more involved if there is an exhibition or other things which relate to the theme. We had an exhibition at the Design Museum on the Survival Guides in London and the news cover as well as doing a talk at the journalism festival in Germany. In Germany we actually built the machine on the cover into a real machine that took live feeds. This is where the programmers from Fabrica got involved in building that physical machine.

Importantly, I still believe in printing but that is not to say that you don’t need to build a world around what you do.

art4d: Is that the Ponte City project?

PW: Yes, it was printed by Steidl earlier in 2014. I was in Johannesburg doing a pop-up exhibition and a book launch in the building and I am also in an exhibition that is touring at the moment. I suppose it is different in many ways but informs a lot of the ways in which I approach COLORS. I’ve been taking pictures for years, collaborating with a South African artist and Magnum photographer called Mikhael Subotzky. We both take pictures and we spend a lot of time in Ponte City talking and interviewing people. art4d: So the book shares both of your photographs?

PW: Yes, and also lots of interviews. It is a book with 17 other books, which have lots of different essays and even bits of fiction around Ponte City, which is this building that has got a huge amount of myth around it and has been a symbol for the rise and fall of South Africa’s commercial capital. It was built in 1976, which was a very significant year in South African history because it was in the middle of apartheid and there is also a more universal story about living in high-rise buildings and of modern living. Whether I am drawing, doing this or doing that, it is all in some ways related. Another thing, which I was doing, was a commission for an Italian publishing house, Mondadori, where I did some drawings for a version of Dante’s Inferno.

art4d: Lastly, are there any areas that you want to maintain and push for COLORS in the future?

PW: I think COLORS just exists in a very different world out of a lot of market pressures because Benetton funds it. I hope that it is more in depth and in a way I don’t want to just push boundaries for the sake of pushing boundaries.

In the past, COLORS has been something of a sensationalist where they were intentionally quite provocative. I think it is ok to do that if it is the byproduct of actually doing something that you can back up, but I don’t just want to do it for the sake of it. If you do a stunt then there should at least be some depth that is behind it.

Importantly, I still believe in printing but that is not to say that you don’t need to build a world around what you do. A milk carton now has a website and probably a YouTube channel and everything else, so you have to have all of those other channels of communication but you also have to have a core. So I would think building that world around the core is important to get it right.
