Fashion Designer

The legacy that creators are facing today along with designing is the green imperative.

In fashion it is a big dilemma as fashion is subjected to trends induced hyper consumption. Mette Julie Bundgaard-Nielsen chooses not to be a by stander but and puts herself as part of the evolution to green thinking. When building BUNDGAARDN I E L S E N collections, she draws inspirations from her childhood experiences with craft making and what is available around her. This hands-on experimentation makes this 36 years post graduate of Design School Kolding (DSKD) one of the most inventive fashion designers to come out of Denmark today. Mette Julie Bundgaard-Nielsen: I have put a great deal of thoughts into what direction I wish the brand to go. It has been very clear to me from the beginning that if I should put more clothing into the world, it had to be for a special reason. I had a story to be told, a direction to be shared and a feeling to be had. It has always been for the passion of creation, and the creation of something unique. art4d: Did your concept evolve since the beginning?

MJBN: From the beginning of the brand the concept of BUNDGAARDN I E L S E N was focused on making both ready-to-wear and couture. It has been a very interesting correspondence between the two different fashion approaches for me. It has brought me in a position now where I only focus on making couture within the BUNDGAARDN I E L S E N, as I am now also, working as Head of Design, on relaunching a 166 years old Danish fashion house FONNESBECH in Copenhagen with the women’s wear ready-to-wear collection SS15. FONNESBECH had a big influence on Danish cultural history in Denmark, so I’m very excited to re-launch the brand. This way I have a clearer division of the ready-to-wear and the couture. art4d: When did you launch your own brand?

MJBN: I started my company in 2009 doing a lot of different things like costumes, interior design, show casting and production, and of course private clients for made-to-measure clothing. Then in 2011, I launched my brand BUNDGAARDN I E L S E N with a direction of modern aesthetics and craftsmanship and in a responsible way of doing things.

art4d: Did you work in theater?

MJBN: I have never worked in theater. However I have worked as a costume designer for various artists. Costume is a big part of how we dress today; it’s a lot about personal appearance and self-realization. The world and the media are the big stage of today.

art4d: What kind of fashion do you make? Is ‘fashion’ a good word for your creation?

MJBN: I think I create both fashion clothing and couture clothing. The word fashion is fixed to never-ending change towards what is new. Since I also believe in `slow fashion’ and spending time in the design process to make something unique and in craftsmanship/couture, it is a bit of a paradox. Therefore, I believe I do a bit of both, however I try to combine the best of both worlds of fashion, craftsmanship and art into every product or work, just using different percentages for the different purposes in the fashion and art industry. art4d: What is the motivation behind your goals?

MJBN: I strive to be relevant to the modern audience, and doing this by juggling different aesthetic theory and elements, such as beauty. I want to give the receiver an immediate aesthetic experience that forces feelings upon them, gives food for thought and bringing them outside their own comfort zone.

art4d: Tell us what is underneath what you want for your creation?

MJBN: It is to create work that brings meaning into people’s lives, as a comment to the time that we live in.

art4d: Do you see yourself connecting to a larger dream? What is that dream?

MJBN: Ultimately I connect to a ’larger than life’ dream, which is to make the world a better place. art4d: Do you follow seasonal trends and make seasonal clothes?

MJBN: Personally for me, trend is dead. Trend is part of a system of faster fashion. Too many people want to follow the same trend and essentially look the same. This resulting in more or less visionless designers, instead of highly creative designers with their own vision, that each makes unique contributions to the fashion world. All `trends’ exist at the same time somewhere in the world. This means that no trends really exist at all. Though I make seasonal clothing, which is inspired of my vision for the collection.

art4d: Do you make a plan of how many pieces per collection, customer profile… blueprint for your collections?

MJBN: Yes when it is pertinent to the collection.

However I also enjoy very much having the room to `play’ and edit, during the construction of the collection, meaning making no grand scheme in order for the ideas of the collection to play out its own life. art4d: Please explain your creative process.

MJBN: It starts with small ideas, thoughts, pictures, words etc, which I inside my head divide into categories. They grow or die. The ones that grow make it to next level, where I often add techniques, matter and feelings of applicability. Then research.

Here I could start sketching 2D and 3D, and the beginning of a collection is at hand. From here on it is refining and editing, making sure to zoom in and out all the time, to see the big picture and the smallest of details.

art4d: What are the materials and techniques you often use in your collection?

MJBN: I like to use contrasting materials and techniques, as it is very important to me to have a certain dynamics in my collections. art4d: How do you make room for new ideas?

MJBN: I’m connected to a never ending pool of new ideas. New ideas just arrive. art4d: What aspect of your work makes you either traditional or contemporary?

MJBN: My work is a comment to the contemporary world we live in, and the techniques I use for inspiration might be more traditional at heart. art4d: How do you think traditional skills can live on?

MJBN: I think we need the traditional skills! But not to say that we do not need the technology.

We need both, and in the perfect mix. Taking the best of each world can only make a better result in the end. art4d: The know-how in craft, where does that come from?

MJBN: Essentially it comes from my grandmother, who mastered just about any craft that exists.

And she taught me how to be creative with my hands, leading me to sew my first clothes on an old hand-swing sewing machine from the 19th century. art4d: In a highly industrialized country like Denmark, what does craft mean to the general public?

MJBN: It is a general assumption that craft is a little old and ’dusty’. It has been associated with domestic middle-class pursuits. Now that has changed. art4d: What do you see as the future for craft?

MJBN: It is getting more important to know your craft. Craft is a good thing.

BUNDGAARDN I E L S E N ไม่ได้ให้ความสำาคัญกับเรือ่ ง ของเทรนด์เพราะเธอเชือ่ ว่า เทรนด์เป็นสิง่ ทีต่ ายไปแล้ว หนึง่ ในผลงานของเธอทีท่ าำ ให้ เห็นแนวคิดทีว่ า่ นีก้ อ็ ย่างเช่น รองเท้าแบรนด์ Imprint ซึง่ เป็นงานออกแบบรองเท้า หนังแท้ๆ ทีจ่ ะวัดตามขนาด เท้าของลูกค้าแต่ละคน นอกจากนีย้ งั เห็นได้จากการ เลือกใช้วสั ดุทม่ี คี วามแตกต่าง กันมาใช้ผสมผสานกันไป เช่น หนังกับลูกไม้ ในผลงานด้วย

art4d: What would be a good lesson that you have learnt in combining sustainability, aesthetic and running a business?

MJBN: A good lesson would be that you can only do as much as you can do. Rome wasn’t built in one day. art4d: How does your culture affect your design thinking and outcomes?

MJBN: In Denmark we have a long tradition for design in our culture, especially in interior design, and that definitely has an influence on my design thinking, because it very much is imbedded in our cultural self understanding. art4d: Is it easy for the brand to be community minded, environmentally friendly and existing in the market full of big brands and fast fashion?

MJBN: I find it easy to be community minded, but it can be a struggle existing in a market of fast fashion because of the price and quantities issues.

However I hope for a change in peoples buying habits, towards buying better quality, unique and long-lasting clothes. art4d: The hand-made approach in your designs is a time consuming process and I imagine that it would make the price relatively high- How do you handle this in today’s economy and customer’s purchasing power?

MJBN: Grow slow. art4d: Generally, what do you see as the future for fashion?

MJBN: Slow fashion, with more attention to detail, much better quality, responsibility and uniqueness.

I think people want to feel that the clothes are made for the individuals. art4d: Tell us about the shoes?

MJBN: The Shoes Imprint, is handmade leather shoes. It is made-to-measure for the individual footprint. art4d: Do you design other objects in your personal life? If any, what are they?

MJBN: I have many ideas of designs and objects, for instance I designed modular cube furniture made of clear plexiglass sewn together with organic cotton cords. I used it for an exhibition last summer.

But I constantly want to learn new things, so I can do more things. I want to do something with ceramics/glass and molded wood. However I never have enough time.

art4d: What is the typical atmosphere in your studio/workshop?

MJBN: With lots of light, fresh air and concentration. art4d: Do you have a particular silhouette that you use all the time?

MJBN: I try to be very aware of my designing/ creative habits, so that I keep challenging myself and pushing myself in new directions. I cannot help it, I need to keep learning and trying out new ways of doing. This is a way for me to continue my growth as a creative and never to ’rest on the laurels’. art4d: Tell us about your use of materials like leather and lace- What cultural narrative do they give us? What about other materials?

MJBN: Materials like leather and lace is an example of a dynamic composition, which I love- The fragile and the sturdy. Leather grows more beautiful with age and attains personal patina. Lace requires a certain treatment and protection to maintain itself in the best way. I like both of the different mindsets, and find it interesting in designing clothes that support both mindsets. Furthermore there are a lot of cultural narratives in the two different materials, that gives the beholder an individual aesthetic experience and I hope it opens up to the use of the materials in a new sense. It could also be other materials with different stories that once combined, becomes something which gives a new life to the cultural narratives. For instant, the use of technological materials such as neoprene or recycled polyester from plastic bottles, together with embroidery or handmade weaving. This is my driver.

art4d: Do you ever wish you were working in a fashion capital?

MJBN: It is very nice to work in Denmark, but I also have dreams of living and working elsewhere.

It has always been a part of me longing to travel, live and experience other cities and cultures, which I am not finished with yet. So I’m sure it lies in the future.

While there is no complete solution for sustainable thinking, it is certainly a question worth asking. Mette Mette Julie Bundgaard-Nielsen as part of the change is offering a glimpse of what a single effort can do to reach that ideal in the face of all kinds of socio-cultural and economic challenges. With a strong belief that one cannot continue to work in the same old way, her effort helps to form a springboard from which others will work in the future.
