The University of Utah College of Nursing is a national leader in nursing, gerontology, and interdisciplinary research. Our graduates are positioned to address pressing local, national, and global needs, which include health disparities, mental and behavioral health, and the health of marginalized communities.

The college is an integral member of Utah’s flagship public research university and part of a world-class academic medical center. We are the sole educational institution in Utah that offers nursing education at the undergraduate, master’s, PhD, and doctor of nursing practice levels.

SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES 53 MILLION US FAMILY CAREGIVERS ARE PROVIDING HEALTH CARE WITHOUT THE SUPPORT THEY NEED. More than one in five Americans provide unpaid family care. They are parents raising a child with a cognitive or physical disability, children caring for aging parents, family members providing care to loved ones living with a mental illness, and aging partners caring for each other as they face chronic conditions and dementia.

We are in a national health care crisis. Health systems expect family caregivers to provide complex care with little training—care that is valued at $470 billion nationally.

Family caregivers have limited access to support services. As family caregivers become overwhelmed, they fail to manage their own health. This compromises their capacity for providing care, and leads to increased health care utilization for both care recipients and family caregivers.

The Family Caregiving Collaborative addresses the needs of family caregivers across the lifespan by partnering with families, researchers, health care and social service providers, and policy makers to: → a dvance scientific training and dissemination of research that provides solutions for family caregivers’ health and well-being. → educate the next generation of health care professionals to recognize and support family caregivers. → foster family-centered health care systems and community-based services. → advocate for evidence-based policy that supports the needs of family caregivers.

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS SUPERIOR CARE GOES FAR BEYOND MEDICAL EXPERTISE. The College of Nursing is deeply committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion. A diverse nursing workforce is critical to the well-being of those we serve–advancing health equity and improving population well-being so that everyone can live a healthier life.

The college is eliminating barriers that prevent top students from all backgrounds from entering the nursing profession—beginning with admissions, and spanning the duration of their education. This work will be accelerated by the Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, a new position that has been added to the college’s leadership team.

Support for the College of Nursing’s work in equity, diversity, and inclusion will ensure that the college’s student body reflects the changing health-care landscape in which our graduates will serve—resulting in better outcomes for their patients.

EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION

The College of Nursing offers a wide range of educational programs—Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Doctor of Nursing Practice, PhD in Nursing, and Dual DNP-PhD in Nursing.

The college offers specialized programs in gerontology, undergraduate and graduate certificate programs, and experiential training through the College of Nursing Simulation Center. Distance learning is available for eligible RN-BS, MS, and DNP students.

Support for scholarships is critical to student success. Scholarships reduce the burden of student debt, allow underrepresented and first-generation college students the opportunity to attend our programs, and reduce the likelihood that students will need to halt their education because of financial constraints. Nurses who graduate with less debt can more easily consider a wide variety of professional roles.

As a result of our loyal donors and our careful stewardship of their philanthropic support, we have increased the number of endowed scholarships we award by two each year. Our goal is to build upon these gains, ensuring that a higher percentage of students receive scholarships and graduate with reduced or no debt—and, in the case of our Ripple Scholarship, that our students are able to continue their education when they encounter unforeseen financial barriers.

STRENGTHENING THE ALUMNI EXPERIENCE While the College of Nursing is building a workforce that is ready for the future of our state and nation, the key building block for this is our alumni. Across Utah and the nation, and in all areas of health care, graduates of the college are providing exceptional, compassionate care.

Growing a larger community of mentors, donors, leaders, and friends is important to the college’s future. There are many ways to become involved, including precepting students, mentoring, guest lecturing, serving on boards, and donating in support of our work.

SUPPORTING EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION AND SIMULATION Support for students enhances the caliber and experience of their education.

The leading-edge College of Nursing Simulation Center, used by College of Nursing and School of Medicine students, makes it possible to learn using technologically advanced methods that did not exist until recently.

U of U health sciences students now become proficient in procedures before ever working with patients. Additional support for experiential learning will save countless lives by significantly reducing human error by professionals.
