“Holocausts” is the artwork where the artist expresses his profound suffering due to the war in the Gaza Strip between Palestinians and Israelis, placing the emphasis on the ongoing massacre. But the artwork is also a cry of hope for peace and brotherhood between the two peoples, both oppressed by cruel historical events.

Contro ogni forma di dittatura!

L’artista prende ispirazione da una frase di Ennio Flaiano, contenuta nel libro La solitudine del satiro, 1973: “Il fascismo: un orologio fermo che due volte al giorno segna l'ora esatta. È questione di un attimo. Ma in quell'attimo grida: “Spacco il minuto!” e tutto finisce qui, il Tempo non si ferma.”.

Il fascismo quindi è come un orologio fermo, che ha immobilizzato la realtà, e che è inutile e sterile. È un orologio fermo che, per forza di cose, segna l’ora esatta due volte al giorno, in cui grida “Spacco il minuto!”, e sulla base di questa vanità si attribuisce una grandezza di cui in realtà non ha meriti e che non dà veri frutti. Ma il Tempo vero, e quindi anche la Storia, va avanti al di là del fascismo, non si ferma, a differenza dell'orologio.

L’artista ferma il suo orologio sulla tela simbolicamente alle ore 10.50, il momento in cui Mussolini arrivò trionfante alla stazione Termini dopo la Marcia su Roma, il 30 ottobre 1922, per incontrare il re Vittorio Emanuele III. Le frustate di colore rosse sull’orologio invece rappresentano la ribellione al fascismo, la Resistenza, e il Tempo, la Vita, che riprendono la loro corsa.

Contro ogni forma di dittatura!

The artist takes inspiration from a phrase by Ennio Flaiano, contained in the book The Satyr’s Solitude, 1973: “Fascism: a stopped clock that tells the exact time twice a day. It’s a matter of a moment. But in that moment he shouts: “I’m breaking the minute!” and everything ends here, Time does not stop.”.

Fascism is therefore like a stopped clock, which has immobilized reality, and which is useless and sterile. It is a stopped clock which, by force of circumstances, marks the exact time twice a day, in which it shouts “I’ll break the minute!”, and on the basis of this vanity it attributes to itself a greatness for which in reality it has no merit and which it does not bear real fruit. But real Time, and therefore also History, moves forward beyond fascism, it does not stop, unlike the clock.

The artist stops his watch on the canvas symbolically at 10.50 am, the moment in which Mussolini arrived triumphant at Termini station after the March on Rome, on 30 October 1922, to meet King Vittorio Emanuele III. The red lashes on the clock instead represent the rebellion against fascism, the Resistance, and Time, Life, which resume their race.

Luglio ‘74 - Io Non dimentico - July 1974 - I don’t forget

Δεν ξεχνώ (den xechnò) non dimentico che il 20 Luglio 1974, sotto il consenziente sguardo internazionale l’isola di Cipro, l’isola di Afrodite, territorio abitato da greci da millenni, viene invasa dalla Turchia con il pretesto di difendere gli interessi della minoranza turca in seguito al recente colpo di stato militare. L’invasione durò dal 20 luglio al 18 agosto del 1974 e si concluse con la conquista turca della metà dell’isola e la creazione di due stati: a Sud la “Repubblica di Cipro” membro della Comunità Europea e riconosciuta dall’ONU e a Nord la “Repubblica Turca di Cipro del Nord” non riconosciuta dall’ONU ma dalla sola Turchia.

Tuttora, dopo 50 anni la capitale Nicosia è divisa in due, come lo fu Berlino. Nessuno s’indegna, nessuno dice niente, tutti hanno dimenticato.

Il mondo non solo ha dimenticato ma quasi volta le spalle all’idea che il sopruso possa passare inosservato, che la superbia possa essere giustificata, che il sangue possa scorrere per nutrire la sete di potere

e di denaro di poche persone. Dovremmo essere più sensibili più attenti più a consocenza delle tragedie che subisscono alcuni popoli, separandoci dalle “lectio magistralis”dei mass media che spesso non sono obbiettivi e che distolgono dalla reatà. La pace, il rispetto non sono utopia. Affidiamoci alla cultura all’arte e alla condivisione del sapere per guardare negli occhi l’altro per avere il meglio dall’umanità. “Non dimentico”deve essere la parola d’ordine di tutti.

“Non dimentico” che sono un essere umano come il mio simile e come tale devo comportarmi, stringendo la mano per fare amicizia e non per buttare a terra l’altro. Nicosia e le tante Nicosie non vanno dimenticate mai! A Nicosia e alle tante Nicosie va data giustizia, libertà e dignità! Nel nome della cultura, dell’arte della reciproca e pacifica convivenza. Even today, after 50 years, the capital Nicosia is divided in two, as was Berlin. Nobody is indignant, nobody says anything, everyone has forgotten.

The world has not only forgotten but almost turned its back on the idea that abuse can go unnoticed, that arrogamce can be justified, that blood can flow to feed the thirst for power and money of a few people. We should be more sensitive, more attentive, more aware of the tragedies that some people suffer, separating ourselves from the “lectio magistralis” of the mass media which are often not objective and which distract from reality. Peace and respect are not utopia. Let’s trust on culture, art and the sharing of knowledge to look each other in the eyes to get the best from humanity. “I don't forget” must be everyone's watchword. “I don't forget” that I am a human being like my fellow man and I must behave as such, shaking hands to make friends and not to throw the other down. Nicosia and the many Nicosias should never be forgotten! Nicosia and the many Nicosias must be given justice, freedom and dignity! In the name of culture, of the art of mutual and peaceful coexistence.

Nel marzo 1992 un giovane Dino Marasà, adesso editore di Studio Byblos e autore di queste due pagine, ha visto con i suoi occhi la situazione a Cipro, le testimonianze dell’invasione turca, i danni gli scempi, la velata tristezza nei visi delle persone. Qui consegna un dono da parte dell’Università di Palermo all’ex Presidente della Repubblica di Cipro Giorgio Vasileiou in nome dell’amicizia dei popoli.

In March 1992 a young Dino Marasà, now editor of Studio Byblos and author of these two pages, saw with his own eyes the situation in Cyprus, the testimonies of the Turkish invasion, the damage, the ruin, the veiled sadness in people’s faces. Here he delivers a gift from the University of Palermo to the former President of the Republic of Cyprus Georgios Vasileiou in the name of the friendship of peoples. Mentre il tempo moriva, restava l’amore Dedicato a Giorgio Agatino Giammona e Antonio Galatola uccisi a Giarre (CT) nell’Ottobre del 1980 dall’odio omofobico familiare e mafioso.

E rifiorì alla sera, senza leggi da rispettare, come un Dio che dispone, sicuro di sé, bello come la scoperta, profumato come la luna. Ma poi si addormentò in un angolo di cuore per un tempo che non esisteva e il tempo cercò di prevalere, nel grigio di un’assenza senza musica, senza colori.

E sbriciolò le ore nell’attesa, nel tormento per dimenticare il suo viso, la sua verità. Ma l’amore negato, offeso, fuggì senza allontanarsi, ritornò senza essere partito, perché la memoria potesse ricordare e le parole avessero un senso e i gesti una vita e i fiori un profumo e la luna una magia. Perché l’emozione bruciasse il tempo e le delusioni, perché la danza dei sogni fosse poesia.

Così mentre il tempo moriva, restava l’amore.

E l’amore guardò il tempo e rise. Un sorriso lieve come un sospiro, come l’ironia di un batter di ciglio, come il sussurro di una verità scontata.

Perché sapeva di non averne bisogno.

Perché sapeva l’infinita potenza del cuore e la sua poesia e la magia di un universo perfetto, al di là dei limiti del tempo e dello spazio…

ROSA D’ANGELO prio amato ma che ben presto si trasformeranno in veri e propri atti, persecutori, di violenze sia fisiche che psicologiche, troppo spesso segnati con epiloghi di estrema crudeltà, di uccisioni contro le moltissime donne. È un invito a riflettere per capirne e comprenderne l’origine di così tanto odio da parte degli uomini verso colei che dicevano di amare. Museo a cielo aperto di Celle Ligure (Giardino Sistino) by Ettore Gambaretto Dalla mente geniale del Maestro Ettore Gambaretto, milanese e allievo di Lucio Fontana, nasce l’iniziativa della creazione del “Museo a cielo aperto di Celle Ligure” (detto anche Giardino Sistino in onore di Papa Sisto IV) in provincia di Savona, in Liguria. Savona è la città natale di Sisto IV, mecenate, che si prodigò al rinnovamento architettonico di Roma e alla costruzione della Cappella Sistina.

Da secoli l’arte e la cultura sono radicate in chi nasce o abita questi luoghi della bella Liguria e recalamano la pace così da dare fondamenta salde al progresso umano. Non guerra ma pace, non buio ma luce. Al Museo a Cielo aperto di Celle Ligure o Giardino Sistino troverete bravi artisti che amano la pace.

Ho avuto una vita e mi è stata rubata.

Ho avuto un sogno ed è stato cancellato.

Adesso non credo e non vivo.

Qualcuno ha ucciso la mia voglia di vivere la mia gioia di volare.

Se il dolore è così grande mille volte meglio questa morte che ha pietà del corpo torturato.

Quando Dio ha creato l’uomo voleva solo dargli col suo soffio una vita per sapere amare, ma cosa ha fatto quest’uomo di quell’alito divino, cosa ne ha fatto di quell’Amore senza fine?

ISABELLA MELONI Al di là delle linee

in modo simile Afrodite la Bella, la dea Reitia venerata dalle antiche popolazioni venete dell’alto Adriatico, è l’anima dell’universo che genera il mondo e anche l’anima di ciascuno di noi.

L’idea è felicemente espressa dall’adagio sufi “Certo Dio è bello e ama la bellezza”, da cui deriva quel principio di armonia e quelle geometrie celesti che hanno ispirato poeti, artisti e uomini illuminati.

La geometria, che ha come inizio il Punto, venne scelta nel mondo islamico come unico linguaggio adatto a creare quelle forme artisticamente astratte e antinarrative, non decorazioni ma ornamento, dove il rigore si sposa all’essenza dei colori e alla sostanza della luce.

In tutto l’Islam e in particolare in Persia, il compito assegnato all’arte era ben altro dal rappresentare eventi e personaggi o compiacere lo sguardo: l’arte può trasfigurare la materia e farla diventare Luce.

Per tale motivo, Ibn Khaldum, grande filosofo e storico del XIV secolo, affermava che il grado di raffinatezza di un’opera d’arte è l’unità di misura del livello di civilizzazione raggiunto da una società.

Nel 1200, la geometria e le sue linee purissime consentiranno a matematici e artisti islamici di ideare dei mosaici con stelle e poligoni, chiamati girih in persiano, diventati sempre più complessi, come quelli della moschea dello Shah a Isfahan, nel 1453.

Qui l’ornamento si estende, apparentemente senza limiti, in ogni direzione e l’osservatore ha sempre l’impressione di vedere soltanto una parte di un disegno più ampio. L’assenza di definizione tra ciò che è in primo piano e lo sfondo rende manifesto il senso dell’infinito.

Non molto tempo fa, uno studio scientifico di eminenti astrofisici di Princeton ha rivelato che queste complesse decorazioni geometriche nascondono sofisticate formule mate-

Dove dirigere la propria vita?

Verso una cultura occidentale, con i suoi poeti, musicisti e scienziati, pervasi dalla forza della ragione e della logica, o verso Oriente e seguire il soffio del vento sul mare e sul deserto in direzione di una luce che, sfolgorando sulle sabbie e sull’acqua, sulle maioliche invetriate e sugli arabeschi di pietra, crea un pensiero sottile e ammaliante: “Era qui che volevo venire!”

Il nostro viaggio, tra Est e Ovest, deve essere teso all’ascolto di tutte le voci che, in apparente dissonanza, si incontrano con la storia, le culture e le religioni del nostro mondo; nella ricerca di quel sentimento universale che fa incontrare e abbracciare mondi paralleli, dove ognuno diventa custode del proprio destino solo riuscendo a guardare con gli occhi dell’altro.

Dove iniziare a guardare? Nel “al baḥr al abyaḍ al mutawassiṭ”, il “Bianco mare di mezzo” delle popolazioni arabe o mar Mediterraneo, un mare che tutti contiene, un mare ampio nel quale nuotiamo e forse non conosciamo, ma “...non ti crucciar se a intender non riesci e lo san forse cos’è il mare i pesci?”, come recita un anonimo poeta persiano.

Forse, come per gli artisti curiosi, è necessario seguire le tracce, sottilmente custodite nel cuore delle tradizioni di ogni popolo, di quel miracoloso caleidoscopio di conoscenze che, ad ogni occhiata, ci rivelerà una nuova sfaccettatura della realtà.

L’idea e la ricerca della percezione della bellezza si ottengono attraverso un’esperienza personale, una rivelazione, non certo tramite la ragione o la semplice erudizione. La bellezza o Tiferet, una delle dieci Sephirot, di tradizione ebraica, rappresenta l’armonia, l’equilibrio e l’integrazione degli opposti, a

ISABELLA MELONI matiche, che l’Occidente avrebbe compreso solo 500 anni dopo, a partire dal 1970, grazie alle iniziali ricerche di sir Robert Penrose. Nel 2002, Peter Lu, ricercatore dell’università di Harvard, d’origine uzbeka, durante una vacanza nella sua città natale, Bukhara, venne attratto da un mosaico della Madrasa delle Fenici, gli ricordava i disegni delle strutture “quasi cristalline” che aveva studiato di recente. Ritornato ad Harvard Lu compì un’ampia ricerca scoprendo che dagli schemi di matematici eccellenti, abilissimi artigiani realizzarono tassellature aperiodiche del piano utilizzando un decagono, un pentagono, un rombo, un esagono e un triangolo che, uniti tra di loro, formano decorazioni diverse da quelle tradizionali e che finora si riteneva fossero solo linee casuali senza schemi precisi. Dietro la loro realizzazione ci sono concetti matematici noti nel mondo islamico più di 500 anni fa.

Perhaps, as for curious artists, it is necessary to follow the traces, subtly kept in the heart of the traditions of every people, of that miraculous kaleidoscope of knowledge which, at every glance, will reveal a new facet of reality.

The idea and the search for the perception of beauty are obtained through a personal experience, a revelation, certainly not through reason or simple erudition. Beauty or Tiferet, one of the ten Sephirot, of Jewish tradition, represents harmony, balance and integration of opposites, in a similar way Aphrodite the Beautiful, the goddess Reitia venerated by the ancient Venetian populations of the upper Adriatic, is the soul of the universe that generates the world and also the soul of each of us.

The idea is happily expressed by the Sufi adage “Of course God is beautiful and loves beauty”, from which derives that principle of harmony and those celestial geometries that have inspired poets, artists and enlightened men.

Geometry, which begins with the Point, was chosen in the Islamic world as the only language suitable for creating those artistically abstract and anti-narrative forms, not decorations but ornament, where rigor marries the essence of colors and the substance of light.

Throughout Islam and in particular in Persia, the task assigned to art was much more than representing events and characters or pleasing the gaze: art can transfigure matter and make it to become Light.

Behind their creation there are mathematical concepts known in the Islamic world more than 500 years ago.

A est, la Madrasa delle stelle di Ulug-Begh, famoso astronomo, nipote del grande condottiero e sovrano Tamerlano; a ovest l’imponente Shir-Dor, “quella con i leoni” e al centro la scintillante Tillya-Khori, “quella d’oro”. Il turchese della sua cupola cambia a seconda della luce: verde limpido e puro dopo il tramonto, verde- mare sotto il sole di mezzogiorno.

Una dimostrazione che il concetto del bello e la ricerca dell’armonia sono patrimonio comune dell’umanità, al di là di tempo, confini e religioni, al di là di qualsiasi linea tracciata da un progenitore neolitico o dal più moderno dei contemporanei, è il Divino celato che scintilla in ognuno di noi.

La fenice o Simurgh, è un uccello mitologico della letteratura persiana, sovrano di tutte le specie di uccelli conosciute al mondo; posto agli estremi delle terre conosciute, verrà raggiunto solo da chi compirà il proprio viaggio iniziatico, alla volta della sua visione accecante.

Per gli antichi Egizi, la fenice era un uccello sacro, con piumaggio rosso fuoco, aveva la caratteristica di morire ogni 500 anni e di rinascere dalle proprie ceneri. Come simbolo di morte e di rinascita, immortalità e unicità, è presente nell’antica cultura greca, mentre nella tradizione cristiana, è simbolo della Sapienza divina, incarnata nel Cristo; nei miti tibetani e cinesi è raffigurata come un drago, mentre in occidente è raffigurata negli stemmi araldici, nelle insegne delle legioni romane e sui frontoni di musei e teatri.

Questo simbolo accomuna popolazioni, culture e religioni in vari tempi e in luoghi diversi; unisce scienza, filosofia, senso spirituale e religioso parlando con un unico linguaggio comprensibile a chiunque: il linguaggio dell’arte, immortale e imperituro.

L’idea di immortalità sembra realizzarsi a Samarcanda, nella vertigine del blu di Shirin e nella piazza Registan. Il mausoleo di Shirin, sorella di Tamerlano, appare come

ISABELLA MELONI bird, with fiery red plumage, it had the characteristic of dying every 500 years and being reborn from its ashes. As a symbol of death and rebirth, immortality and uniqueness, it is present in ancient Greek culture, while in the Christian tradition, it is a symbol of divine Wisdom, incarnated in Christ; in Tibetan and Chinese myths it is depicted as a dragon, while in the West it is depicted in heraldic coats of arms, in the insignia of the Roman legions and on the pediments of museums and theaters.

This symbol unites populations, cultures and religions in various times and in different places; it unites science, philosophy, spiritual and religious sense, speaking with a single language understandable to anyone: the language of art, immortal and imperishable.

The idea of immortality seems to come true in Samarkand, in the vertigo of blue Shirin and in Registan square.

The mausoleum of Shirin, Tamerlane's sister, appears as an aristocratic and delicate architecture, sublimated by a glazed ceramic covering with all the shades of blue, light blue, white and, among the turquoise inlays, the inimitable green of Central Asia , iridescent under the sunlight until obtaining pearly shades. It is difficult to find the words to describe the chromatic sensitivity, the sweet harmony and the poignant affection that ooze from all the possible shades of blue.

The vertigo turns into amazement and wonder in seeing our Renaissance concept of the “ideal city” reflected in the Registan. The square is a rare example of a complete and closed architectural whole, similar to a gigantic scene, a

stage open towards the south, corresponding to the idea of the ancient forum.

To the east, the Madrasa of the stars of Ulug-Begh, famous astronomer, nephew of the great leader and ruler Tamerlane; to the west the imposing Shir-Dor, “the one with the lions” and in the center the glittering Tillya-Khori, “the golden one”. The turquoise of its dome changes depending on the light: clear and pure green after sunset, sea-green under the midday sun.

A demonstration that the concept of beauty and the search for harmony are the common heritage of humanity, beyond time, borders and religions, beyond any line drawn by a Neolithic progenitor or by the most modern of contemporaries, is the Hidden divine that sparkles in each of us.
