SITE HISTORY The site is located in carrington, originally was an island that was underwater at high tide and the topography was gradually built up by ships from the port dumping ballast and other reclamation work. The site emerged as a residential suburb in the 1860’s, whilst still maintaining access and proximity to the city, port and industry. In the 1920’s steelworkers moved into the area to now an unused BHP steelworks site. This site looks into requirements regarding Flood Management from both the Newcastle Development Control Plan and the Property’s Flood Information Certificate.

THE BRIEF 107 Gipps Street, Carrington is currently a retail dwelling of a block of four. The client Mr Williams and his partner has purchased for his new base of operations and family home. Apart from themselves they have asked for an extra room to be created for their ageing mother who has retired and will be in the not to distant future living with them at this address.

Mr Williams has provided a detailed list of requirements for the house with a key design feature to create an outdoor area within the house to enjoy the fresh air and entertaining space. The client is fully aware of their situation and it is for this reason they have asked the UON architect to design a resilient home with intelligence, thought and care to deal with any future flooding event.

DESCENDING TOWERS CINEMAS

THE BRIEF The Tower Cinema site located in Newcastle CBD along King Street is a trapezoidal block, cut into the hill, and offering four brutal, and mostly brick elevations to each of its faces.

The cinema opened in the 1970s and in 2018 it closed its doors and has been dormant ever since. This project aims to restore one of the retaining cinemas while incorporating different set programs in the building, including a hotel, restaurant, bar and a theatre of choice. This project evolves over three stages of demolition, proposition and documentation.

THE PROPOSED My final proposal for 185 king street Newcastle was aimed to create a private and public space for medical student of University of Newcastle. This proposal included a retained cinema from the exciting structure, accommodation, restaurant and bar, and theatre. An adjacent public space was adopted as an access point which included the land way site. With these factors in mind, a concept evolved.

The relationship between new and old of the building was developed through critical thinking of materiality, whilst creating a spatial focus on one of the set programs (Medial Theatre).

The building’s materials demonstrate juxtaposition, with the old retained through the brick work of the façade, and the new represented by the reflective steel as a modern material.

This further highlights the descending of life to death in the building.

The idea between life and death was pushed further through the concept of descending with a design element of a void running through the building. This void captures the natural sun light onto the operating table as the focus.

Life thriving was represented above and around the void with vegetation growth. Hotel rooms were designed facing towards the void, viewing the sign of life growing. This void creates a journey through the building, a path leading onwards, unaware of the dissection of a body below.

SITE HISTORY The BHP Steelworks site was operational from 1915 to 1999. The BHP steelworks was seen as a city within a city that provided jobs, affordability, health, education, and social services. The Administration building holds historic significance as it was central to the BHP steelwork community and is heritage listed today.

This was repurposed also with the rolling shed of the site in the proposed development for the new city within a city.

NSW government had undertaken a remediation strategy for the site. The site contains groundwater, flooding and soil contamination issues. A barrier wall was embedded into the ground, north of the site to reduce the flow of contamination leaching into the waterways. Clay capping was placed over the site to reduce the filtration of rainwater. This also provides protection from direct human contact to the contaminated soil. New storm water drains have been embedded into the eastern and western ends of the site to collect surface run off.

THE BRIEF

Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan (GNMP) claims the need for additional 12,000 dwellings by 2036 for the Newcastle local government area (LGA). This is required to meet the growing demand for housing. To respond to the future housing crisis, GNMP has asked architecture firm University of Newcastle (UON) to generate ideas for new residents of Newcastle to be accommodated in a city within a city.

A section of the former BHP steelworks site in Mayfield North is now owned by NSW government. To respond to this housing crisis, UON must propose a developed scheme of 3,000 residences on the BHP steel work site. UON architects will need to look into heritage, flooding of the site, landscaping and soil amendments, structure, and materials.

This project was driven by the concept of community, a city within a city. The considerations, from living arrangements, to communal areas, and rental schemes, have been embedded to promote the concept of community for the city.

MASTER PLAN

The masterplan the layout of the city within a city. There is 10 buildings in total, housing 300 residents each. There are 9 levels with housing starting on the first level and columns below to hold the structure as well as a cord runner through the middle. An open void runs from the center of the building to filter through light into the communal areas.

The design of the floor plates can be seen in a pivot rotation creating our building shape. The waterway channels are embedded through the site and through some of the buildings to collect rainwater. Community can cross these channels by interaction of steppingstones or bridges. There are multiple paths connecting each building around site and a bus route to promote sustainability.
