Established in 1919 in the area that the company’s name derives from, our carpets, still crafted today in Beiriz, Portugal, are the result of the passion and skill of extraordinary artisans dedicated to this timeless art. The story of Beiriz Carpets began over 100 years ago in the small parish of Beiriz in Póvoa de Varzim, where it witnessed the creation of the first carpets bearing its name.
Production grew rapidly, and the factory gained significant recognition, with the founders receiving several awards at national and international exhibitions.

THE ARTISTRY OF BEIRIZ
At Beiriz, our craftsmanship is rooted in a rich history that dates back over a century. In the early days, our factory utilized hand-drawn designs on technical paper sheets, where each tiny square represented an individual knot created by the skilled hands of our artisans. This meticulous process was essential for crafting the renowned Beiriz knot, which has become synonymous with our brand.
As the world has evolved, so too has our approach to craftsmanship. While we continue to honour the traditional techniques that define our heritage, we have embraced innovation to enhance our production methods.
Initially, our rugs were crafted exclusively from 100% wool, which was the only material used at the time and is still considered the most reliable. Today, we have expanded our repertoire
to include sustainable materials such as bamboo, Tencel, Cotton, and Recycled Polyester. These additions enable us to accommodate a wide range of projects, utilizing the finest yarns for intricate details and desired textures.
While our craftsmanship and materials have evolved, the passion for production and expertise that has defined Beiriz for over a century remains unwavering. We skilfully mix these exceptional materials to achieve the desired effects, or we may choose to highlight their unique compositions in their purest form.

MADE TO MEASURE
All Beiriz hand-tufted carpets are created by a process that combines hand craftsmanship with high precision. From start to finish, our made-to-measure carpets go through a rigorous design and development process, ensuring that each piece is tailored to the exact size, shape and colour adjustments required. All rugs are created to custom dimensions. Colours can be selected from the Beiriz Pom Boxes, an extensive and sophisticated colour palette system.
TEXTURES & YARNS
As with all Beiriz custom rugs, texture and yarn choice are paramount in determining the character and aesthetic of the final product. Beiriz hand-tufted rugs can be produced in cut pile, loop, cut-and-loop, or shag pile, and are available in the same yarns used in Beiriz’s finest collections.
COLOUR MATCHING
Colour plays an important role in bringing rug designs to life and capturing the inspiration behind them. When developing custom colours for proposals, Beiriz makes every effort to match them in the final production dyeing. We use the best dyes and the finest fibres available, using state of the art equipment during the process. While an exact match is impossible, we will always pursue the best possible match.

MAINTENANCE & CARE
REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS
After installation, rugs may show temporary wrinkles that disappear over time. Regular vacuuming prevents dirt from settling and prolongs the rug’s life. Rugs should be rotated to ensure even wear, and direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent color fading. Beiriz uses the finest fibers in the textile industry; however, certain variations may occur, none of which are considered manufacturing defects.
FLUFFING OR SHEDDING
New carpets may fluff or shed short fibres. This occurrence is not considered a manufacturing defect but a natural occurrence. Frequent vacuuming is suggested up to six months after installation.
SPROUTING
Occasionally, tufts will dislodge from the backing of the carpet. These loose ends should simply be trimmed flush with the surrounding surface pile with sharp scissors. Excessive sprouting is often caused by wheels of luggage carts, castors, inadequate or improper use of vacuums, and is not considered a manufacturing defect.
SHADING (WATERMARKING, POOLING, PILE REVERSAL)
Shading is caused by the different effects of light playing off the sides of fibres versus their cut ends. Shading is a normal phenomenon for any cut pile carpet made from any type of yarn. It does not indicate wear, fault in manufacturing, flaw in materials or a combination.
FADING
Natural oxidation of dyes will occur, especially when a carpet is exposed to sunlight. This is not considered a defect in manufacturing or materials.
FUZZING
Fuzzing is caused by wheels of luggage carts, castors and inadequate or improper use of vacuums. Use of a vacuum with a beater bar or harsh brushes can also cause fuzzing.
CARPET MAINTENANCE TIPS
VACUUMING
Carpet must be vacuumed routinely.
1. Light to moderate traffic areas: vacuum at least every 2 to 3 days.
2. Heavy-traffic and pet areas: vacuum daily.
Routine vacuuming is the most important part of any maintenance program. We recommend the usage of a good vacuum system regularly with an average power of 2000w.
TREATMENT OF SPOTS AND SPILLS
1. Check for spots daily and treat immediately.
2. Act Quickly! The longer the delay, higher the probability for a permanent stain.
3. Blot liquids with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or plain white paper. Do not scrub the area. Continue to blot until the area is essentially dry.
4. Gently scrape up semi-solids with rounded spoon and vacuum. Do not add moisture.
5. Remove spots and stains with water first. The spill may be simply removed with just water.
6. When using stain removal cleaners, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for use, including proper ventilation.
STORAGE
When storing a rug, it is essential to roll the piece rather than fold it, as folding can cause permanent wrinkles, even in the short term. Always vacuum the rug before rolling. Place a cardboard tube of the same length at one end and roll the rug around it as tightly as possible. Fasten the roll securely with adhesive tape and store it in a clean, dry room. Long-term storage should be avoided.
CLEANING BY PROFESSIONALS
There are different methods available for deep cleaning. To ensure the best results and that the right technique is applied to the specific fibers of each rug, we recommend contacting a professional cleaning service. Ask your local rug and carpet cleaning professional about the injection/extraction method, which allows a deep cleaning with low temperatures and a rapid extraction of the liquid. Don’t wait until dirt is clearly visible, as cleaning becomes more difficult and may shorten the rug’s lifespan. We advise to contact a professional and recognized rug cleaning company.

1919
Over a century ago, Beiriz began producing high-quality rugs on wooden looms, each featuring its own original and unique design. Founded on July 17, 1919, by Hilda D’Almeida Brandão Rodrigues Miranda and her husband, Carlos Rodrigues Miranda, the company started as a small workshop with just six employees. In a short time, the factory expanded to employ around a hundred workers.
The rugs crafted using the “Beiriz” knot became highly valued, as this technique contributed to the company’s reputation, particularly for their intricate decorative patterns.
Weavers would “sing” the colours from charts that illustrated the designs, and through their exceptional skill, they created patterns that made Beiriz rugs excellent representatives of Portuguese artisanal production.
