his quotation from an ancient philosopher says much about the long-term mission of ACCESS Academies. Education is the key to real freedom for our students: •

• Freedom from poverty -– able to provide for themselves, their families and their communities because they gain the intellectual tools to be productive citizens.

high schools – parochial, private and public. That’s 48 of our 50 8th grade graduates.

• 92% of our graduates from ACCESS schools’ Class of 2006 –which totaled 22 students -- completed high school in May 2010 within four years.

• Enrollment in the ACCESS programs in September 2010 climbed to 244 students.

• Our annual NativityMiguel Scholarship Dinner generated more than $230,000 for funding high school scholarships for our graduates.

• Freedom to pursue spiritual and moral growth –- able to lead lives marked by integrity, compassion and commitment to the common good.

BY THE NUMBERS • Our ACCESS graduates of 2010 totaled 50 eighthgraders, 96% of whom are now enrolled in college-prep high schools.

• Our total number of graduates in six years now totals 286 and we have another 244 currently enrolled in our four ACCESS Academies schools.

• In addition, 29 of our first 35 graduates (Classes of 2005 & 2006) – or 83% -- are now pursuing post-secondary education.

96% Total 8th Grade Graduates in 2010: 50 Succeeding with Reading is an ACCESS Academies program aimed at igniting a love of reading and writing among urban third, fourth and fifth graders. Its impact expanded in 2009-10 due to the generosity of donors, who more than doubled donations over a year ago to top $130,000.

GRADUATE SUPPORT A unique element of the NativityMiguel school model nurtures graduates with an array of support services to navigate the path to academic success during high school and beyond. The effort is mission-critical to students working to become the first in their families to graduate from high school.

ACCESS’ Graduate Support Program dedicates a full-time graduate support advocate at each of our four schools to:

VISIT every graduate each month during their four years of high school (now 249 students)

ASSIST each family with tax returns, financial aid applications and electronic filings, in collaboration with Saint Louis University Law School volunteers

CULTIVATE relationships with students’ high school teachers, counselors and administrators

Through the ACCESS Graduate Support Program, students receive needed financial support during the high school years to ensure success in their college-prep high schools and solid preparation for college.

Visions of a collegiate future are developed on 8th grade field trips to area colleges, where students meet professors, get to know athletic team members, visit dormitories and talk with college students. The joy of students’ success is witnessed at the annual NativityMiguel Park-A-Palooza event for 8th grade students attending all seven NativityMiguel schools in St. Louis.

“NativityMiguel schools are the only schools to follow our graduates, and stay on them and with them for four more years. We give them the encouragement, tools and support needed to ensure each one’s success,” notes Carolyn Dubuque, director of mission effectiveness for ACCESS Academies. “Our end game is getting them in college. This dedicated support creates access to college for our graduates.”

FUNDING HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS Today, 185 high school freshmen and sophomores are attending the college-prep school of their choice because donors are “funding the gap.” This collaborative NativityMiguel Network scholarship fund-raising effort ensures financial access to aspiring students who are ready to work, achieve and contribute. Many are the first in their families to graduate from high school, fully prepared for success in college.

early 400 supporters of St. Louis’ seven NativityMiguel network schools and 21 area college-preparatory high schools united in June 2010 to raise more than $230,000 at the second annual St. Louis NativityMiguel Scholarship Fund Dinner, underwritten by the Vatterott Foundation.

The funds raised are now supporting tuition scholarships averaging more than $1,000 each for 185 students, including 87 freshmen and 98 sophomores, at 27 local college-prep high schools.

Three graduates shared how their experiences at NativityMiguel schools had charted the course of their lives and their visions for the future: • Joshua William (Class of 2010 at DeLaSalle Middle School; Class of 2014 at DeSmet Jesuit High School) • Luis Llanos (Class of 2006 at St. Cecilia Academy; Class of 2010 at St. Louis University High School; Class of 2014 at University of Notre Dame) • Terrie Webb (Class of 2005 at Marian Middle School; Class of 2009 at Rosati-Kain High School; Class of 2013 at Truman State University)

“NativityMiguel schools and local college-prep high schools share a fervent mission -- providing greater educational opportunities to students living in some of our poorest neighborhoods,” said Tom Nolan, executive director of ACCESS Academies. “Our students are grateful for the financial and emotional support of our donors. Our community’s generosity is a testament to what can be achieved when we align efforts and work together.”

The St. Louis NativityMiguel network includes four ACCESS schools: the Academy at King of Glory Lutheran School, Central Catholic Academy, Holy Trinity Academy and St. Cecilia Academy. Other network members include De La Salle Middle School, Loyola Academy and Marian Middle School. All seven NativityMiguel schools are located in the city of St. Louis.

ACCESS Academies Executive Director Tom Nolan was a featured guest on a one-hour interview and discussion about alternatives to ensure that those in St. Louis’ urban core have equal access to effective education, June 15, 2010.

The story of how ACCESS Academies at St. Cecilia made college a reality for the three Carrillo brothers -- Alfredo, Alex and Jesse -- was told in a column by Susan Weich in the St. Louis PostDispatch on May 5, 2010, reaching an audience of more than a quarter-million readers.
