First Dates REALITY

Who hasn’t seen it? The famous First Dates programme is a real hit. We asked ourselves: ‘Is it actually like what you see on TV?’ Do they only pick out the awkward moments or do they make it seem hotter than it was? We travelled the country for you and asked two remarkable participants what is was really like...

Joep First of all, can you tell us who you are and what you’re currently doing?

My name is Joep, I’m 25 years old and I work in individual healthcare, which means I help people who have become demented at an early age with their daily proceedings.

Why did you decide to take part in First Dates?

Last year, I saw First Dates NL for the first time. Back then I was in a relationship, but I thought “if I ever become single again, I want to take part in this,” so I did.

What did you have to do to take part in First Dates?

I filled in an extensive questionnaire on the BNN-site on a Saturday evening.

The questions were about who I am, what my intentions were with First Dates and what kind of person I would like to be my partner. The next Monday I’d already received a call from the producer of First Dates, who told me they wanted me in their show. We had a thirty minute conversation over the phone about my questionnaire. After that, he said they were going to try to find my perfect match, but it could take two months before they would call me again. Suddenly, after half an hour they called me again and told me they had already found my perfect match and asked me if it was possible for me to come to Amsterdam that Thursday to record the date.

With what kind of feelings did you go to the date? Did you already have some expectations?

Actually, I wasn’t even nervous. I did expect I would fall off my barstool when my perfect match walked in, but that didn’t happen. I’m pretty down to earth, so I just let everything happen.

Was your experience in real life what you expected from what you saw on TV? Yes, it was like what I expected. In fact, it was even better. Everyone was really kind and caring. During the date you don’t even notice getting filmed, because they use small cameras.

That was really chill, because it made me feel like I was just in a regular restaurant.

What did you think about the way they presented your date on TV, compared to how it really happened?

The aired fragment of my date was not even ten minutes long, but I was at the location for about seven hours. Obviously, the producers only broadcast the parts they liked the most, but despite that, everything was presented just like how it happened.

How did you experience your date? How did things end with your date?

I think the date was fine. I would describe my date as a passer-by I just had a chat with. I didn’t feel anything, regardless of the fact that he was a super nice and kind person. I do think the match was ridiculous. I have no clue about why they matched us. Beforehand, I clearly told my intentions to the producers: monogamy is not always the case in the gay scene, but that is one of the most important things for me in a relationship. When I saw my date on TV saying that he wasn’t sure about that, I thought it was even more weird that they matched us. I never spoke to that boy again after the date.

Would you like to participate again?

The producers called me about whether I would like to go on another date. I said no to that, and you know why? Because I participated just to experience it and I hoped something nice would come from it. Sadly enough, that didn’t happen, and I think it was quite a mismatch. Therefore, I wouldn’t like to participate again.

Firoza First of all, can you tell us who you are and what you are currently doing?

My name is Firoza, I’m 23 years old and I study cultural heritage in Amsterdam. I’m from a place nearby Arnhem and I’m half Dutch and half Arabic Indonesian, but I feel mostly Dutch. I’m currently busy with making music and I like to dress up.

What was the reason you decided to participate on First Dates?

That’s quite a funny story, because I didn’t sign myself up to participate.

Three years ago, I met two girls and they became the new matchmakers of First Dates and they approached me to ask if I wanted to participate, because they thought they had found my match. I didn’t have to fill in the whole questionnaire, they were mostly interested in what I was looking for in a partner. The producers later called me to ask some questions to see if 6 Mark 6 (my date) and I would match.

Did you have any expectations when you went to the date?

When the producers called me, they asked three times if I liked talking about the universe and they pushed me to dress extravagant for the date. Because of this, I expected my date would be extravagant and sort of a ‘stoner’.

When I met my date, Mark turned out to be nothing like what I expected, he was much more fun and relaxed.

How did you experience the recordings?

I felt really comfortable. Also, the cameras are not manned, so it doesn’t feel like they are watching you. After a while you forget they are recording. The producers are committed to you and they make sure you don’t make a fool of yourself on national television.

I arrived and left in a good mood. When I came in and saw Mark sitting at the bar, I was actually relieved he wasn’t what I expected. I was also happy I wasn’t the person who had to wait with the bartender. Mark and I really got along and we talked about the most random things. I have no clue how the matchmakers made the match, but it worked.

You were the first male-female couple who decided to split the bill. Did you know that?

No, I didn’t know! The producers sometimes try to make situations awkward, like with the bill. When the bill came, I didn’t really think about it and suggested to split the bill, so it wouldn’t get awkward. It’s one of the show’s charms to create awkward situations, but I tried to be ahead of them by doing this.

What happened between Mark and you after First Dates?

When they asked us if we wanted to see each other again, we both said yes, but I feel like we just said that to give everyone a ‘happy end’. We texted each other about the episode when it was on TV, but that was it.

Chicken with cauliflower and mango chutney off the baking sheet.

We have a new recipe for you! Easy to make and a perfect combination of the tastes sweet and savoury. You will look like a real chef when making this. You only need one baking sheet, so that means less dishes to do. Enjoy!

We go to the supermarket and buy …

1 Big cauliflower Olive oil Salt 8 Chicken thighs 1 Jar mango chutney Coriander (one hand) One red onion Flatbreads (option) Rice (option) Salad (option)

We go to the kitchen and start with….

Reheating the oven to 190 degrees.

While it’s warming up you can chop the coriander, red onion and the cauliflower (in little cauliflower florets). That’s all you have to do: 5 minutes of chopping. Easy peasy!

Mix the cauliflower florets with one tablespoon olive oil and a pinch of salt.

Spread them over the baking sheet and bake them for around 20 minutes.

When the cauliflower is in the oven, you can mix the chicken thighs with the mango chutney (you can use the whole jar, extra delicious!).

After the 20 minutes, put the chicken on the baking sheet.

Put it back for around 30 minutes. Wait till the chicken and cauliflower are fully cooked (and crispy).

Garnish with the coriander and red onion.

To complete the dish, you can add rice or a fresh salad. You can also add some delicious flatbread.

Jennifer Steenkamp Hey! I’m Jennifer, the most chaotic perfectionist you’ll ever meet. This 19-year-old Brabo is enjoying writing stuff for the InFlow!

If you ever see me grumpy, then three things may be going on: it’s way too early, I need coffee or I’m hungry. If the latter is the case, you’d better give me some food (tip: chocolate or arugula). People always recognize me by my ‘rolling r’ and my fairly ‘hard g’ for a Brabander. My roommate has taught me a very important life lesson that I would like to share with you: ‘’Better an oops, than a what if’’.

Julia Davidse Hi! My name is Julia and i’m 19 years old, but 20 when you read this. I’m in my first year of the bachelor of CIS and therefore this is also my first year as a Flow-member. Rosa van der Vleuten Hello everyone! I’m Rosa and I’m 18 years old. I was born in Amsterdam and mostly raised in Beek en Donk, so none of that above/below-the-rivers discussion for me, thanks. I’m into music, reading, drawing, theatre and all sorts of creative activities, and I enjoy learning new languages, especially if I most probably won’t have a use for them ever. I think I’m mostly described as sweet and funny, even when I don’t intend to be. I enjoy learning new skills and having something to pour my creativity into, as well as working hard to educate and entertain you through our magazine, blog, and newsletter this year with the other amazing girls of the committee.

Nina Rooze My name is Nina and I’m 22 years old. At this very moment I’m in North Carolina for my exchange to East Carolina University.

I’ve worked with very much pleasure on this year’s first edition of the Flowzine. Me in a nutshell: Very talkative, overenthusiastic plant lover and craft beer drinker. In my spare time I love to read, watch films, 12

Fabiënne Jansen Howdy y’all! My name is Fabiënne, I’m 21 years old and I live in Reusel. I’m a third year CIS student and just got back from studying in North Carolina! Going on exchange was a phenomenal experience in which I got the chance to continue one of my biggest passions: singing! I joined NC State’s Women’s Choir in which we sang the craziest songs ever. One night, we had a concert in which we performed the ‘’French Fries’’ song. You probably wonder what that’s supposed to be. In a nutshell: we were making the weirdest sounds with our voices and - no surprise - I burst out laughing right in the middle on stage. That perfectly fits with how my friends would describe me: always happy and positive, sometimes a little embarrassing. Although I’ve missed the first semester with the fabulous InFlow girls, I’ve loved every second of working on the Inflow, blog and this Flowzine with them!

My name is Alieke. I am 21 years old and in my fourth year of my Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Information Sciences. I grew up in the beautiful Zeeland (Axel). However, after high school I decided to study in Tilburg. Still happy with my decision because I love the “Brabantse gezelligheid”. I love to write and to be creative, so that’s why I became the board buddy of the inFlow committee. I’m really enjoying doing that!

(Commissioner) Dear Flowzine readers! My name is Laura, but people call me Lau. I’m a 21-year old in the middle of my student life, which I enjoy to the fullest! I was born and raised in the beautiful province Zeeland in the Netherlands. This might be the reason that I’m ‘addicted’ to going to the beach and the sea in summer.

However, I’m a big fan of the opposite as well: snowboarding. That’s also why Flow’s ski trip was like a present to me. Furthermore, I am active at T.S.R. Vidar and I have two jobs, I can’t sit still. If I had to describe myself further, I would say I’m a bit clumsy, but luckily that makes people laugh. Lastly, I love being a commissioner of these babes from the inFlow committee!

ROOMMATES... ...AND THE STUFF COMING ALONG WITH IT

It’s a Thursday morning and I’m in the kitchen, scrubbing the grease off the tiled backsplash. There are two things about the situation you should know.

The first is that I should’ve done this yesterday at the latest. But before you judge me too hard: the red and yellow stains can in no way have been from this week alone, meaning someone else didn’t clean here last week at all.

Neglecting my cleaning duties makes me feel extra guilty , because I know I give my roommates a lot of shit when they do. I share an apartment with two of my friends from high school. Every time I hear myself nag about their stuff lying around all I hear is my parents. I feel like there’s two approaches when you move into the few square meters you’ll be calling your home. The first is becoming aware of your responsibilities and seeing yourself become more like your parents now that you can acknowledge their struggle. The second, of course, is making sure you diverge from parental norms as much as possible by living out your wildest dreams. Often in the form of alcohol or the many other forms of intoxication student life has to offer.

Two sharp barks sound from outside, and through the kitchen window I can see our neighbour walking across the gallery of the flat to make his way downstairs and walk his dog.

I remember when we moved in in September and our fresh household

sounded like every teen’s dream, reminiscent of Friends, or The Big Bang Theory: three long-time friends moving into an apartment. Shenanigans ensue! For the first three months what was underneath the sitcom-fantasy we were living was like the irresistible force-paradox. Immovable object vs unstoppable force.

If I’ve learned anything in my time here it’s that making compromises is not my forte, no sir. But if there’s anything you have to do when your roommates are as stubborn as you and form a coalition against you, it’s making compromises. In my time in Tilburg, I feel like I’ve been pushed through some kind of magical car wash and what has come out is a shiny little freshman. She seems to be a newer, cooler version of me. And being passive-aggressive over an abandoned hairbrush doesn’t sound like it should be a thing she does.

So, I started accepting more clutter around the house. We’re all happier now, even if I short-circuit a bit when there’s somehow eight unused bread clips on the counter and nobody admits to putting them there.

I close the kitchen window when the wind starts blowing harder. It’s a window that requires you to push harder than your instincts initially allow, but it adds character. Maybe we’ll get to live that Friends-fantasy yet. But for now, I’ll gladly make do with the immense contentment the spotless backsplash grants me.

APPLEJUICE changed his life...

â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I Love Zeelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;-apple juice: from thesis spun out of hand to successful local business Last November, our own Eva Jinek, Laura van Houdt, travelled to Hulst to interview Gert-Jan Hiel about his apple juice. What started with a thesis that got out of hand and an affordable hand mixer eventually turned into a lucrative business that runs exclusively on natural, local products.

Gert-Jan Hiel studied Entrepreneurship and Retail Management at the Avans College in Breda, which was at that time home to research into juices in the restaurant business. Gert-Jan thought of doing research into exclusively the restaurant business in Zeeland, and one thing led to another.

Gert-Jan’s love for apple juice originates from his youth. This, together with the current demand for non-carbonated drinks made Gert-Jan start experimenting with 100% natural apple juice made from real Zeelandic apples. And healthy it is: there’s no added colorants or sugars! Becoming a fitgirl has never been easier.

‘I Love Zeeland’ is currently run by Gert-Jan alone. It’s busy, he has to admit, so he’s planning on hiring some personnel soon. Our very own Laura might have been able to acquire PR job on the spot, while Gert-Jan does concern himself with communication. He promotes ‘I Love Zeeland’ on social media such as Instagram and Facebook. But he also communicates proactively with the restaurant business. The company visits several restaurants, bars and cafés to represent its product, and often attends hospitality fairs to not only sustain existing customer relationships, but also to create new ones.

Plans for the future are ready to go. Research into the Belgian market is running as we speak, so after ‘I love Zeeland’ has conquered all of Zeeland, we might see ‘I love Zeeland’-apple juice on the other side of the southern border.

Another plan for the future is something that is secret for now, but there is no doubt you will all be hearing from this soon... Gert-Jan has no limits and the possibilities are endless!

Further, the aspect of sustainability is something that carries a lot of importance within the company. Every apple is grown in Zeeland, and Zeeland is also exclusively where the product is processed and sold to wholesale distributors, making sure the transportation process is as short as possible (thus minimizing carbon emission). This feat has been rewarded with the ‘Zeker

Zeeuws’-label, which guarantees the customer that the product originates 100% from Zeeland.

Next to their “standard” apple juice, ‘I love Zeeland’ also produces Zeelandic apfelschorle, a kind of carbonated apple juice, which is sold in places such as Domburg, Zoutelande and Renesse and attracts German tourists in particular. After noticing a demand, 100% natural orange juice of Costa Rican oranges was also added to the range of products.

The Five Most awkward moments on first dates...

Bad pickup lines A sad mistake which apparently hasn’t been joked about enough for people to stop. If anyone still thinks bad pickup lines are cute, let me confirm they’re very much not.

Not liking the food Imagine ordering a delicious steak but when it arrives it is not so delicious anymore. An invasion of mushrooms is staring you down. You hate mushrooms so what now? Are you just going to eat the food and quietly throw up in your own mouth or are you not eating it and come across as a picky person to your date? It’s up to you...

Running into your parents One of the most stressful things in the beginning of a relationship is meeting the parents from the person you’re dating.

All the preparations beforehand you usually do, like choosing the right outfit. But imagine if you’re on a date and you see your parents enter the restaurant. Oh no, what should you do? Hide behind the menu, run to the bathroom, leave your date alone and go home or just introduce your date to your parents? Either way, it will be awkward.

Paying the check So who’s paying for the whole ordeal? The person who asks for the check, or the person who takes it when it arrives? This is 2019 and even more so as a student, we can’t assume the man will pay, even less if the number of men taking part in the date makes this especially difficult. So we split? Seems fair, but maybe a ‘Tikkie’ is not the sweetest goodbye message.

Saying goodbye Oh god. Oh no. After a date, except when it went exceptionally good, you’ll have to say goodbye. This might just be the hardest part about a date, because there’s so much opportunity for awkward mistakes, condensed in a short moment.

What do you say? Will the other want to send you off with a kiss, and what to do if they do? And when you think you’ve survived, said your last goodbyes and are ready to take off, of course your date needs to go in the same direction as you.

Ski Trip RECAP!

In the beginning of January, Flow went on its very first ski trip to Prapoutel, France. It was an adventure we did not want to miss! For many of us it was the first time on skis or on a snowboard, so the question was if everybody would come back in one piece. Luckily this was the case! Everybody survived and it has been a trip to remember.

The bus trips

We all know the classic long bus trips to the destination and back home. They’re basically an adventure on its own. We met up after dinner on the 3rd of January and started driving. We all knew it was going to be a long night, but it was not yet time to sleep.

The most well-known game of the year could not be forgotten on this trip (yes, 30 seconds indeed). The game satisfied everybody for a while and believe me when I say that things can get intense… people get caught up in the game very quickly. This also amounts to the bus trip as

the perfect opportunity to get to know each other. After a while everybody got tired and sleeping didn’t seem like a bad idea, as far as that is possible in a bus though.

Seriously, where do you have to put your legs? You can’t lie down on your side either, and besides that, some people snore quite loud. Despite all that, most people did somehow manage to sleep for a bit. Flow was not alone in the bus. Some boys from Lelystad and a couple of women from Amsterdam also joined the bus trips. Both bus trips were long, but a lot of stories were shared and friendships were made, so maybe they weren’t so bad after all.

Ski+Snowboard Lessons

Approximately 2 hours after arriving by bus the beginners had their first ski lesson. We put on our skis and we had to take the ski lift up the mountain, which caused some panic. Most of us didn’t know how it worked so it was a stressful situation, but once our butts were planted on the seats we had time to relax and enjoy the view. The panic rose again when we had to get off. It was quite the challenge with those heavy ski shoes and ski poles to not trip or poke someone. Our first mission was to go down a hill of approximately one centimetre high, but it was definitely the most scary centimetre of my life. We had to practice the most well-known position: “PIZZA PUNT”.

Everyone quickly got the hang of it, so some of us got to go down the blue slope with an instructor.

Unfortunately the instructor didn’t trust me and my friend, because we sucked. He didn’t say it, but he definitely thought it. Thus, he had us practice some more on the kiddie slopes. Down the mountain in a chain of clumsy skiers and back up with the lift.

At the end of the lesson we went “like a JEKKO” according to our instructor Mark, so we got to go down the blue slope for the first time. With trembling knees and full of anxiety we went down the blue slope “like a JEKKO”. After falling a few times we made it down.

Luckily it was over and it was time to get a delicious lunch: hamburgers! Afterwards we had time to practice some more on the kiddie slopes.

The next morning we had lessons again at 9.30. It was a very early morning and for some of us it was hard to make it on time because it had been a bit too much of a good time the evening before. It was time to practice some more.

The more advanced snowboarders and skiers had free time and were going to do the “squirrel route”, which lasted two hours.

Instead of the beginners who only went off the blue slope, there were also more advanced skiers and snowboarders who went of the red slope.

Après-Ski

The first evening we all went out together to eat. Afterwards we were free to go out at La Taverne or just go to bed, since most people hadn’t slept in the bus and the lessons were exhausting. People played games at La Taverne, like ‘ride the bus’, ‘fingering’, ‘most likely to’ and ‘piccolo’. After that, the people who stayed at La Taverne started to party, dance and let’s not forget: SHOTS. DJ Robbert took care of the beats, which led to an amazing night.

The second night there was a pink party. Everyone was dressed up as nice as possible including something pink. It all began with a polonaise, and from there on everyone was swinging on the dancefloor. Around 2 o’clock in the evening it was time to move from La Taverne into our beds. Some of us didn’t feel like sleeping and went sledding.

Others had an epic after party in the storage space with lots of chips. After that it was really time to go to bed and dream about this wonderful ski trip.
