Elaine, jouw altijddurende enthousiasme is aanstekelijk. Jesse, jouw aangeboren schrijftalent is onmiskenbaar, en blijft me verbazen. Lieve commissieleden, bedankt! - Ayra Lintsen

alleen in Nederland.

De Amerikaanse onderzoekster Shoshana Zuboff deed hier interessante uitspraken over: “Will we be the masters of information, or will we be its slaves?” en “If the digital future is to be our home, then it is we who must make it so”.

Smartphone detoxing is populair.

Olav: ‘We werken dus minimaal één dag vooruit.

kort mogelijk.

Candidate Board 2018-2019 Now that the new academic year is starting, there’s a new board in town. This year’s board will again consist of five people. Robbert Spaargaren (Chairman), Nina Rooze (Secretary), Ayra Lintsen (Treasurer and Vice-chairman), Dirk Goosen (Internal Affairs), and Anouk den Doelder (External Affairs). We met up with them to talk about their journey leading up to their board year and their plans to take Flow to the next level.

From left to right: Ayra Lintsen, Dirk Goosen, Anouk den Doelder, Robbert Spaargaren, Nina Rooze

Our Chairman for the next 12 months will be Robbert Spaargaren, last year’s study trip commissioner, who was born and raised in Nieuw-Vennep, Noord-Holland. During the summer, he went on a 3-week road trip through California and now he is back to take on the role of Chairman of Study Association Flow. Robbert, when did you realize you wanted to be part of Flow’s board? I think this happened gradually. I got in touch with Flow during the TOP Week and I struggled to choose between

15

Flow and a student association. Obviously, I made the right decision. After a year of committees and activities, I got more involved into Flow’s world. All the fun activities and promising prospects made me thrilled to be part of Flow’s Daily Board. Every position has something to offer that suits me. I considered Chairman to be the most favorable, because it demands both responsibility and flexibility, which I believed was the best fit for me. I don’t like to leave tasks unfinished, can perform under pressure and don’t mind helping others when I can.

Can you already tell us something about next year’s policy? We’ll discuss our entire policy at the upcoming General Members Meeting on September 5th. At the moment we still have to work on some finishing touches, so I can’t go into detail as much as I’d like. However, I can already tell you that we’ve got quite some promising ambitions for the upcoming year. One thing you’ll probably notice, is that we want to continue the development of our educational activities. Besides that, we’ve got some nice additions to Flow’s social media platforms in mind. What are your first impressions of your fellow board members leading up to the start of your board year? I happen to know quite some things about my fellow board members already. We realized that this doesn’t necessarily mean that our synergy is perfect from the start. That’s why we’ve spent a lot of time together during meetings and leisure time over the summer. I think that having spent some time together during summer will pay off during our board year, as we know we can rely on each other, and have a lot of fun together. What do you look forward to the upcoming year? I look forward to achieving the targets we will set at the beginning of the year. We really want to lift the association to an even higher level than it already is. Furthermore, I am eager to meet the new freshmen and see if there are some blue-yellow youngsters amongst them. They will have to behave themselves before I will make my striking appearance on the 5th of December… Next up is our Secretary, Nina Rooze. She is one of the two Zeeuwen on the Daily Board and the former commissioner of the Introduction Committee. She likes to read and write and is a water scout in her spare time. Nina, what was the moment that you realized that one day you wanted to be part of Flow’s board? Immediately during my matching day before I even started studying at Tilburg University. I immediately felt very welcome and part of the group. That feeling has always stayed with me, so that’s when I knew I wanted to do a board year. Why did you want to be Secretary? Were there other positions you considered? I always knew I wanted to be Secretary, because I really like to have things organized and I don’t mind taking the minutes at meetings. For a while I also considered becoming Chairman, but with my qualities and those of the other board members in mind, I think overall this was the best option.

Can you explain to us what the position of Secretary entails and why it’s so important? Being a Secretary means you are in charge of all of Flow’s internal communication. It’s your task to send e-mails to the members, make notes at (general) board meetings and you’re also responsible for the member administration. If you don’t have a Secretary in your board, everything will be a mess, and nobody could do their work properly. Flow has been focusing on internationalizing the association for a while now. How important does this board consider this? Internationalization of course is still very important for Flow and the board. We have quite some international students, and we think it is very important to try to integrate them in our association. Everybody should feel welcome here, and your origins and the language you speak should not play a role in this. That’s why we are working very hard to ensure every international student integrates well into our association. What do you think will be your biggest personal challenge for the upcoming year? My biggest challenge will probably be trying to let things go more easily. I’m a person who can take some things a bit too serious and personal from time to time. It will be a challenge to prevent that from happening. What do you hope to have learned one year from now? One year from now I hope to have mastered English (and of course Dutch) spelling and grammar. Besides that, I hope to learn more about myself and about how I react to such close teamwork. Ayra Lintsen, or ‘Ayr’ for friends, will be in charge of Flow’s funds for the upcoming year. Our Treasurer (and Vicechairman) can get oddly excited about simple things like buying a new garden plant, and she sometimes bursts into laughter quite easily, but you’ll get used to that. Ayra, what was the moment you realized that one day you wanted to be part of Flow’s board? When I started my studies, I already wanted to become an active member at a study association. In my first year I was a member of the study trip committee, which is very intensive. After becoming commissioner of the inFlow committee the next year, I was certain of it: I wanted to become part of Flow’s Daily Board. From day one I wanted to become Treasurer, because I think this position suits me best. I’m a very organized person who can keep an overview of multiple things simultaneously without a hassle.

16

What are the tasks of the Treasurer in the months leading up to the start of the new year? How does the previous Treasurer help you with these? The Treasurer makes a budget estimate prior to the start of the academic year. In this estimate, it is specified how much money each committee can spend and how much is being held back for the board and for other expenses. I do this together with the previous Treasurer, so luckily I don’t have to figure out everything by myself! This year you also are the Vice-chairman. responsibilities does this position give you?

What

As Vice-chairman, I am responsible for taking over the Chairman’s tasks when he is not present, for example because of illness or already planned meetings. This means that I am, at that moment, responsible for making the agendas for meetings, leading the meetings and filling in for the Chairman at other appointments. This year, a new committee, the Sports and Games committee will be introduced. What is the goal of this committee and what are the expectations of the board for this committee? The activities that this committee will organize are not defined yet, because it is a whole new committee. Therefore, the commissioner and the committee members will also have a big say in it. We expect the committee to organize accessible and fun activities. The activities focus on sports and games (duh) in its broadest sense: the committee could, for example, organize a Mario Kart tournament or gather Flow members who want to participate in a run in Tilburg. What do you think will be your biggest challenge next year? I think it will be very hard for me to let go sometimes. I like having an overview of things, and really strive to keep that overview on things. However, sometimes I have to realize

17

that that’s not possible, and I’ll just have to let go for a while. Dirk Jacobus Johannes Goosen, or Dirk for short, also known as the master of the Gin & Tonic, will be Flow’s ‘first’ Internal Affairs. After his studies he wants to become a rock n’ roll star, or something in the field of IT. Dirk, you are the first person that can call himself Internal Affairs of Study Association Flow. What has changed compared to last year and what will your tasks entail? The position is renamed from Vice-chairman to Internal Affairs, because the previous board figured that Vicechairman should be the label for the person to step in when the Chairman is not present. However, the tasks that the Vice-chairman had aside from standing in for the Chairman are now tasks for the Internal Affairs. These tasks entail mainly the educational and IT aspects of the association. Flow is an association that always tries to develop itself further in the area of online presence and technology. What are the plans for the upcoming year to keep this trend going? That is correct, and I am very happy to see this growing online presence continue. This growth has been going on for a long time, and many Vice-chairmen and Web Committees are to thank for it. I am excited to see what I can do to contribute to this in the role of Internal Affairs, working together with Ivo and his Web Committee. We all know Ivo’s great video editing skills, so videos might be something to look out for. We also hope to be more consistent on the online media. What has Flow brought you over the last years? Those who knew me in the first year would have never expected me to be in Flow’s board someday. When I started my introduction week, I was an introverted and awkward person. At first, I wasn’t even sure whether

I wanted to be an active Flow member. However, after attending some drinks, canti, parties and even the study trip in my first year, I quickly decided that I wanted to be more active in my second year, so I joined the Web Committee. Flow always made me feel very welcome, and got me out of my own bubble. In my third year I became commissioner of the Web Committee, and now I am going on this adventure of being a Daily Board member. Thanks to Flow I am less awkward (still awkward but at least less I hope), I got more confident and started to feel really good about myself. Flow gave me a lot of love and I met some wonderful people over time. Flow gave me the opportunity to really enjoy my life as a student thus far. I hope I can contribute to making the best out of every Flow member’s student time and am looking forward to the coming year. Last but not least, Anouk den Doelder, will be our External Affairs. Her favorite drink is beer, except when someone else is paying, then it’s Malibu Cola. With her everlasting enthusiasm and her experience as commissioner of the Informal Activities Committee, she sure will be the perfect fit for Flow’s board. Anouk, your board year starts in September, but as (candidate) board your work starts way earlier. Tell me a bit about what you guys have been up to the last months. We, as the candidate board, have had weekly meetings with the previous board, where we discussed lots of things concerning Flow and also received feedback on our policy, which we used to improve it. Besides that, I’ve had some contact with various companies and I have already been to a few appointments together with Anneloes, the previous External Affairs.

How important is your task to attract companies to partner with our study association? What would happen if your position didn’t exist? I think it’s very important for any association to be able to focus on the acquisition and partnering with companies. Of course we need a budget to be able to cover our expenses, but the partners are equally important in providing Flow with company visits, workshops, et cetera. It would be possible to have the other Daily Board members take care of the external tasks, but the results will be better if one person, the External Affairs, can focus mainly on partners and acquisition. In what way do you think Flow stands out compared to other study associations? Because Flow has lots of varying committees, we have lots of active members. Even though we aren’t the biggest study association, we are able to do so many amazing things with all our members, because of the committees that put a lot of effort into everything they do. What I also love about Flow is that new members feel at home right away. It sounds extremely cliché, but all members are open to meeting new people and everyone fits in, in their own way. What are you looking forward to the most the upcoming year? Everything! From all the trips and activities (both formal and informal) to all the constitution drinks we are going to have as a board. Even the harder stuff such as only getting three hours of sleep a night or four-hour-long Daily Board meetings will be manageable. I am very excited for the upcoming year and can’t wait for it to start!

Changes in the CIS curriculum The CIS curriculum has gone through some major changes during the last few years. It’s time to make an overview of all these changes to make sure that you know what to expect! Every study program goes through some changes every now and then to make sure the program’s content is up-to-date and students know everything about the latest developments in their field of study. However, the curriculum of our study Communication and Information Sciences (CIS) has gone through some major changes during the last few years and some more are planned. Time to make an overview of everything that is changed and is going to change. Track Data Science: Business and Governance The first major change was implemented in September 2015. From then on, Data Science: Business and Governance (DSBG) is a master track within the CIS curriculum. In this English-taught program, students learn to analyze the large amounts of data that today’s society operates on. Students learn to spot trends for businesses, government agencies or nonprofit organizations. More new tracks In the academic year 2017-2018, two new tracks were introduced. The new track New Media Design (NMD) was introduced for master students. Besides that, the track Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence (CSAI) was introduced as a replacement for the track Human Aspects of Information Technology (HAIT), for both students in the bachelor’s and master’s program. However, because this concerns a replacement of a track, students who already started with the HAIT track before September 2017, are able to finish their study program within the HAIT specialization. New stand-alone programs We can conclude that three new tracks were added to the curriculum of CIS. However, that is not everything that is going to change. It is planned that both DSBG and CSAI are becoming stand-alone programs, next to CIS. Firstly, as of February 2019 (or September 2019),

19

the Data Science track will be a stand-alone master’s program. The name of this program will then change into Data Science & Society (DS&S). To support the independence of both DS&S and (in the future) CSAI, a new and extra premaster’s program will start especially for students who are interested in DS&S and CSAI. This premaster’s program will start from the academic year 2018-2019. However, students who start with the new premaster or the regular CIS premaster will be admissible to both the regular CIS master’s program and the new stand-alone programs. As mentioned before, the CSAI track will become a stand-alone study program as well, with both a bachelor’s program and a master’s program. It is expected that the independence of the bachelor’s program will take place in the academic year 20192020. The independence of the master’s program will probably take place later. Changes in the regular CIS program In the academic year 2018-2019, more changes will be implemented. First of all, the bachelor’s track Language & Communication and the master’s track Communication Design will be renamed. These tracks will then have the name Communication and Cognition (CC). Secondly, as a student of one of the bachelor’s tracks you will have to follow five (instead of four) courses within a particular track, if you want this track to be mentioned on your diploma. This should result into more in-depth knowledge.

Do you still have questions about the changes within your study program? Contact your study advisor or the students from Student Party Dante.

Tilburg offers more varied sport activities than you’d think! Is summer season already over? Hopefully not. Fortunately, September can still surprise us with hot, brightly sunny days. That means there is still some time left to shape that summer body, and the good news is that there are more ways to do this than just by squatting in the gym. Many student sport associations are located in Tilburg which offer you the perfect opportunity to keep your body and social life fit and healthy at the same time. Let’s place some surprising ones in the spo(r)t lights! TilSAC What? Sport climbing and alpinism! Are you a real outdoor beast and ready to rock the mountains during one of the awesome trips TilSAC organizes? Or do you just want to try this kind of sport by joining a training at the Tilburg University Sports Center? Everybody is welcome to join the squad, which is not only very sporty but also has a nice atmosphere with informal activities.

Flying High Tilburg What? Ultimate Frisbee. I can hear your brains crashing: what does that look like? Ultimate Frisbee is a fast, exciting team sport with a lot of similarities with other team sports like hockey or volleyball. Fun fact: Ultimate Frisbee was born in Tilburg by an assignment of a staff member of the Tilburg University Sports Center: he had to promote a new, refreshing sport, which stimulated students to set up their own student sport association. Feel free to try the Frisbees by joining a training for free! Braga What? For the ones who’d rather skip adventurous outdoor activities, Braga might be a nice alternative. Braga is Tilburg’s student’s ice skating association and provides their members with courses for all levels of ice skating. You are welcome to join the ice rank at Stappegoor on Monday nights from October till March for only €20 a year. Relaxing your abs will not be forgotten at Braga: drinks are organized to catch up and destress. Conclusion: leave your bench and start searching your dusty ice skates!

TSWV Avalon What? Avalon offers swimming and water polo practices and matches for all kind of levels, plus the chance to participate in student competitions and to visit cheerful drinks. Splash it!

Guest column: Dirk Goosen Something wonderful happened in 1991 in Manchester. A roadie from a band called ‘The Inspiral Carpets’ came back to his family after touring in the USA, and noticed his little brother had joined a band. He never knew his brother could play any instruments and was suddenly fascinated. He had always dreamt of being in a band and auditioned before for several bands and even made demos for solo songs. Thus, he asked his mother: “What does Liam play then? What’s his band called?”. “Oh, I don’t know,” replied his mother Peggy, “he says he’s the singer, and the band was called... Oasis? Or something like that. It’s probably all not too serious.” But Noel wasn’t satisfied with this information. He went into town to find Liam and his band. “Liam, a singer?” Noel thought by himself. What a ridiculous thought…

Anyway, Oasis was being announced and it was time for the band to come onto the stage. Without saying a word to the audience, an audience that did not seem very interested in the band, Liam started singing the words to one the songs he wrote. “Take me when I’m young and true, was it me or was it you?” The band played just okay, not too bad. In the back of the pub where Oasis had just performed was Noel sitting, sipping his Guinness, waiting for the band to join him. Noel was astonished by the performance and really liked what he heard. He desperately wanted to join Oasis and write songs for them, and the members of Oasis were delighted to have finally found a song writer and a proper guitarist. Noel only proposed one condition: he wanted to have full authority over the songs, because the lyrics were all over the place.

Live Forever

That week Liam’s band was performing in a pub somewhere. Liam knew Noel was back in town, and secretly, he found it very important what his older brother would think of him as a singer and his band. He knew Noel was a good guitar player, and his band really needed a lead guitarist. He used to listen to Noel strumming on his guitar in his bedroom with his ear to the wall. Noel could even write songs, something the band really was struggling with. Liam was writing songs, but most of them didn’t seem to make any sense, it didn’t help that Liam could not play any guitar himself.

From that night on, Oasis was practicing four nights every week. The costs for rehearsals were really high, as they were renting a room to play in. They did not get much money for the few gigs they played here and there, and the future was not looking bright for these five lads from Manchester. Until one night Noel came back from a bar where he’d scribbled down some lyrics and chords on a napkin. These chords would turn into iconic Gallagher-chords, and the lyrics would still be sung 25 years later all over the world. This one’s called Live Forever.

Appie Tomorrow An interview with Rupert Parker Brady Albert Heijn is always busy thinking about the future of supermarkets and testing smart innovations which can make grocery shopping easier. The food retailer commissioned retail expert Rupert Parker Brady to write the book Appie Tomorrow to explore all ingredients for a better life in 2025. We talked with the author about his book and the future of food and food retailing. Can you tell us something about your background?

I

started my career in journalism and have worked as chief-editor and publisher of several business publications. Purely out of my own interest, I founded and edited the first retail marketing magazine in the Netherlands in 1997. From 2004 onwards, I established myself as an independent writer and speaker. I organized and hosted the Elsevier Retail Summit and the personality award ‘Retailer van het Jaar’. The last seven years I have written and published management books about well-known retail entrepreneurs, and made a name for myself as independent retail expert and commentator. That’s how I ended up writing two books for Albert Heijn over the past two years. How did the idea for writing the second book develop? Wouter Kolk, the CEO of Albert Heijn, is a good acquaintance of mine. About two years ago he asked me to write a book for internal use only. Voortrekkers, as that book is called, consists of stories told by his colleagues at Albert Heijn. The book was distributed among members of the leadership team in Zaandam, and the management teams of the 1000 different stores. The board of management of Albert Heijn commissioned me to write the second book for the celebration of Albert Heijn’s 130th birthday. They came up with the idea to look ahead to the year 2025, combined with a look into the future. I also was present at the birthday event held for 300 of Albert Heijn’s external relations and stakeholders where Albert Heijn asked all of them to tell about their expectations for the future.

Where do you think the Dutch food retail industry is heading in the future? For the next seven years - at least in the Netherlands - there will still be an Albert Heijn supermarket in every town and shopping centre. Smaller chains however will slowly be taken over by bigger chains, just like Emté, which was recently acquired by Jumbo and Coop. Another development is that food services will become integrated in supermarkets. Albert Heijn is boosting its investments with cafés and restaurants in their supermarkets. Jumbo for example has acquired and integrated the restaurant chain La Place in some of their supermarkets. A third development is the growth of the online sale of (fresh) groceries. AH.nl is still the largest player on the market with a turnover of €500 million and a nationwide logistic home delivery operation. Meanwhile, Jumbo is buying market shares by acquiring ecommerce partners, like Smulweb. Food experts expect a moderate growth of online sales over the coming seven years. Right now online sales only amount to a few percentage points of the total turnover in food retail. How will Artificial Intelligence supermarkets of the future?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can for example be used to help consumers coproduce new products or combinations of products and services, based on the needs of specific types of customers. Another possibility is that AI can suggest whether you should buy other products which are healthier or better fit your lifestyle, based on the knowledge of your past buying and eating habits. This summer, Google launched the Dutch version of Google Assistant. Before the start of the festive season this autumn, Google Home will

become available for the consumer market. You can use this intelligent speaker at home for information, making grocery lists and actually buying products. Albert Heijn is one of the parties involved in this exciting development. Brands obviously have the desire to communicate with their customers when they’re at home and make sure that they won’t forget to choose them instead of a competitor. AI will eventually play a bigger role, but right now it is still in its infancy. The possibilities are limitless and consumers will embrace AI.

in most supermarkets in cities. I seriously don’t think that we will have invented a completely new supermarket concept in 2025. People are creatures of habit and enjoy having a grocer at every corner. But if I think about the developments we will have made in 2050, then I don’t know what supermarkets will look like. Nobody does. How will good service be maintained with less cash registers and therefore less cashiers?

In my book the suggestion is made that possibly thousands of part-time jobs in the stores will no longer be needed. The staff at the head office of Albert Heijn is currently busy thinking about how to organize The impact of technology will of course only the workforce differently, because they see all “AI can suggest increase. Millennials and Generation will soon be normal to pay without a cashier Z appreciate speed and ease of use. Most of and scan everything yourself, and pay without them expect that they will be able to pay in the cash or card. Whether the cashier will disappear altogether blink of an eye in 2025. I don’t know, but I do know that there is still a need for good service. Service is one of the unique selling points of What do you expect supermarkets will look like in the future? the Albert Heijn formula. This service will be provided by people who not only stand behind the counter but actually If you look seven year ahead, I honestly don’t think it will have a free role, walking around the supermarket helping look very different than it does now. In 2025, there will be customers. Thanks to technology, they can also see on more supermarkets using payment in-store without using their tablet that they are helping Mr. or Mrs. Jansen. If Mr. a cash register. and eating habits. It does mean that certain types of jobs will be replaced by new ones. But this will happen gradually, it won’t happen overnight. It happens as fast as the market and technology will let it happen. Albert Heijn is still a company run by people who deeply care for people. They can’t just suddenly run the supermarkets without any people like Amazon does to a large extent. It’s not part of their DNA. Do you see any drawbacks in the supermarket of the future? Drawbacks? Well, the only con I can think of is that there might be less personal contact, and everything might be computerized and rationalized. It is up to the consumer to decide what he or she prefers. At ‘AH to go’, you don’t need to communicate with staff at all. Just grab your groceries, ‘tap & go’, and you’re outside in less than 60 seconds. If you are shopping in a conventional supermarket, you might need more time and have other needs. Supermarkets can supply all sorts of services to all kinds of people. For years we have gotten used to the dry cleaner, cash machine and postal service at the supermarket counter. Anything is possible. What it boils down to, is that the supermarket still plays a major part in our daily lives. The supermarket manager or franchiser is often ‘the last man standing’ in a small town or village. He is a well-known personality who meets and greets people and organizes activities to get them all together. In the future you can maybe also drop off your kids if there’s a school holiday. There are all sorts of possibilities to align services in the store. The supermarket of the future will be much more a complete service concept, where you can use all sorts of services and facilities; one of these is grocery shopping. It would be nice if, like mentioned by Wouter Kolk in the book, the walls of the kitchens in the staff canteen of every Albert Heijn store are taken away, so that those who live in the neighbourhood can cook a meal for the whole neighbourhood once or twice a week. That way, it could become more of a community concept

where everybody shares and no one is left out. That’s very sustainable and future proof. Are you currently working on other projects for Albert Heijn? At the moment, I am working on arranging an in-depth conversation with universities to engage with their lectors and students about the future of food and retail. We are in contact with Nyenrode Business University, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam and Wageningen University & Research (WUR). With the WUR we are busy organizing a day on campus where the board of Albert Heijn shows alumni and students their ideas about 2025, in order to discuss the challenges and dilemmas. Note: The book ‘Appie Tomorrow, Alle ingrediënten voor een beter leven in 2025’ is now available in bookstores and online at Bol.com. Three quarters of the proceeds will go to the Albert Heijn Foundation. Unfortunately, this book is only published in Dutch. Besides the book, the Albert Heijn staff at the head office in Zaandam also posts vlogs on their YouTube channel Appie Today. A recent example of a video is one about a fridge that knows about the products in it that are almost out of date and which products need to be bought again. A few recipes are suggested, which can be used whilst preparing the leftover products. The idea is that less food will be wasted. ‘The staff of the Marketing department wants to bring things to life with Appie Tomorrow. This fridge is actually based on the HIKU-experiment which Albert Heijn tested in a few hundred households in 2017. After a few months it was terminated,’ says Rupert Parker Brady. If you are curious about concrete new technologies that might appear in supermarkets or households in the future, you might want to check out these vlogs.

Serious games We all are or know someone who plays The Sims, FIFA, Fortnite or one of numerous other games out there. There are, however, other games than those only meant for entertainment purposes: serious games. These serious games are used by industries such as defense, education, healthcare and politics. In this article we’ll discuss the development and implementation of these games. The early days of serious gaming Although serious games only really have gained familiarity to the general public over the recent decade, the phenomenon goes back way further. In popular culture, Pong by Atari (1972) is considered the first video game. It might be the first video game to have gained commercial success, but it is not the first video game per se. Before Pong, there were some other games designed for serious purposes. One of the first computers, the Manchester Mark I, which was created in 1951, already supported a chess game that could play against a human, although it wasn’t perfect yet. In 1958, the first game able to play a game of chess was released for the IBM 704 computer. All of these aforementioned games were created by scientists in order to do research in computer science, especially in the artificial intelligence field. During the Cold War, the U.S. army invested a lot of money in research. This lead to the creation of various computer programs to serve military purposes. In 1961 one of the first digital serious games not solely designed for computer research, was released. This game, called T.E.M.P.E.R., was

27

designed by Clark Abt, an American researcher. This was a Cold War simulation game used by American military officers to study the Cold War on a worldwide scale. Although most of these serious military games were classified and not available to the general public, we consider them as being the ancestors of various serious games we know today. In his book published in 1970, conveniently called ‘Serious Games’, Clark Abt gave a clear definition of serious games: “We are concerned with serious games in the sense that these games have an explicit and carefully thought-out educational purpose and are not intended to be played primarily for amusement. This does not mean that serious games are not, or should not be, entertaining.” Serious gaming today The first digital serious games might have been developed with primarily military use in mind, but the military isn’t the only domain where serious games are common nowadays.

Healthcare The main goal of serious games used for healthcare is to pass on knowledge and skill and to serve a medical purpose

by simulating a situation to avoid risk and also to cut down costs. There are four genres of serious healthcare games: health monitoring, detection and treatment, therapeutic education and prevention, and rehabilitation.

the only way to develop soft skills. Because these often are too theoretical, they lacked the necessary interaction to train employees in skills like communication, leadership and negotiation.

In that last category are for example patients afflicted by neurological disorders who are making terrific progress in regaining control over their motor skills with the help of serious gaming. Using serious games proved to be a good solution to the lack of motivation caused by the repetitiveness of exercises in traditional physical therapies.

These domains are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the possible applications of serious gaming. With the recent progress made in the area of Virtual Reality, a whole new avenue of possibilities for serious gaming has opened up, so there is much more to be expected from serious gaming. If a serious game hasn’t crossed your path yet, it sure will in the future, because soon, a world without serious gaming will be unthinkable.

Education Nowadays, serious gaming for educational purposes is almost considered normal. At the age of two, some children already walk around playing educational games on their parents’ tablet. Some schools even require their students to buy tablets, because their learning methods no longer involve material books. Children do their exercises in the form of games on tablets. Digital material allows teachers to better adapt to each student’s particular skills and speed. The classroom of the future is a connected one, with the teacher able to zero in and control the flow of information and learning. No wonder the educational games industry is considered the fastest growing part of the gaming industry with a market expected to grow to a staggering 150 billion dollars (!) by 2020.

Corporate training Even adults can benefit from learning through serious games. During the last years, the use of serious gaming in corporate training has spiked. Well designed training games make learning more fun and challenging. Research already suggests that serious games enhance knowledge acquisition and skill development by introducing the learner to different situations, challenges and problems. The use of serious games in corporate training is increasingly focused on soft skills training, which are skills that have to be practiced in order to develop them. Prior to the development of serious games for corporate use, classroom training was

Praises all over the place Everything will, sooner or later, come to an end. Your childhood (probably) ended a while ago, and believe me or not: one day, you won’t be able to go out every night anymore. Just like that, my year as inFlow commissioner is also coming to an end. I feel super content, but mostly proud. Proud of my committee members, proud of the things we did together. Proud that we dared to change the online newsletter, and proud that we published the first English Flowzine. To top that all off, I am extremely proud that we interviewed so many interesting people for this edition of the Flowzine: Bol.com, Albert Heijn, NS, say what?! Even though I am mostly proud, it also saddens me a little bit that this inFlow year is coming to an end. I will miss my committee members a lot, and want to thank them personally. Elaine, your everlasting enthusiasm is contagious. As long as you hold onto that, you can accomplish so much! Laura, you always knew how to brighten our day with your subtle puns. Have you already spotted her pun in this edition? Merel, you were always down to help. I’ve seen you grow a lot over the past year, and that’s great to see! Jesse, your natural writing talent is undeniable. If you don’t use this later, I will personally come haunt you. Anne, your critical view on things and experience at Dante delivered powerful, informative pieces. It’s nice to follow your new blog, where you post things concerning sustainability. Last but not least, Nina, my dear board buddy whose network was so big that she always could hook us up with someone to interview. Dear committee members, thank you! - Ayra Lintsen

I may have caused a heatwave. Whoops. Us Dutchies have some interesting habits. Besides the fact that we like to sit in circles at birthday parties while we eat little sausages and little cubes of cheese with freaking mustard, we also like to complain. We tend to do this a lot, about anything you can possibly think of. Normally, I try to refrain myself from nagging and bitching about every little thing that’s out of my control. During this summer however, I transformed from a perfect son in law (ahem) into a whiner, a cry-baby, a pain in the ass of mythical proportions, and a lot of this had to do with the weather. My string of complaints started when me and my girlfriend were visiting Lisbon. During our stay we went to a nearby coastal town for a day. Our plan was to spend the afternoon at the beach, sunbathing, feeding each other grapes, putting sunscreen on each other’s backs… Okay, I might be drifting away from the subject a bit. Anyway, we left Lisbon while the sun was shining brightly, but during our train ride, the weather changed dramatically. The sun made place for clouds, menacing white-grayish clouds, and the nearly silent Portuguese air made place for a Zeeuwish-like sea breeze. This is the point where I started to rant about the weather. It wasn’t good enough, it was too cold, it was too windy, it was too cloudy. In hindsight, I should not have done that. Mother nature turned out to be unforgiving. She definitely heard my complaints, because when we left a rainy Lisbon some days later and got out of the airplane in Eindhoven, mother nature slapped me in the face, literally. 35 degrees Celcius, no clouds, no wind at all, zero drops of rain, thousand drops of sweat, I simply got what I asked for.

I may have asked for it, but after the excruciating 200 meter walk to the baggage claim area, I realized what I had done. I was the reason behind this heat wave, not global warming (okay, maybe it happened mainly due to global warming, but for the sake of my story, let’s assume that I caused these hellish temperatures). The following weeks where challenging. For once, I started to regret not getting a summer body and instead eating all those kapsalons during the spring (and winter, and autumn and the previous summer, I might have a problem, I am well aware). I did make a friend during the heatwave. I bought a new fan, and we quickly became inseparable. We did have our ups and downs. I tried to feed him grapes once, but I think it came too soon in our relationship, because he pulverized them as soon as I came too close. So yeah, I might have inadvertently caused a heatwave. How was your summer? Jesse Janse
