…’s year was defined by preliminary discussions on the Student Centre, the Policy Paper and Strategy reforms and the development of the Council groups’ work.

How We Advocated for the Students’ Interests in 2018

In the field of municipal influencing in Espoo, many of AYY’s goals made good progress. Espoo reserved funds in the 2019 budget for offering free-of-charge contraception for under-25-year-olds.

Otaniemi also gained its own city bike stations. The HSL discount on public transport extended to cover all students regardless of age, which put pressure to save on the amount of the student discount.

AYY undertook influencing work in Espoo to maintain the student discount percentage. The final decision will lower the season ticket discount from 50% to 45% and remove the discount from single tickets.

In 2018, the two-year curricula that AYY has long hoped for were implemented at Aalto and, as per AYY’s wishes, the Aalto course selection was published already in the beginning of the summer.

Aalto also implemented the course ‘Influencing in a community’ that offers study credits for participation in volunteer operations.

AYY also prepared for the coming year’s parliamentary and European Elections e.g. by reforming its Policy Paper and visiting Brussels on a study trip.

More than 5 000 bookings of AYY’s rentable festive and hobby facilities in Espoo and Helsinki.

Renovation of several rentable facilities in connection with the renovation of the Jämeräntaival properties. In 2018, a total of 8 facilities underwent renovations and will become available for members’ use again in 2019.

At the end of 2018, a total of 2 572 apartment seekers in the Domo system.

During 2018, 1 862 tenancy agreements made for apartments.

Nearly 1 000 answers received for the service questionnaire sent to the membership in autumn 2018, whose results will be utilised in developing the services.

Properties and Planning

Student Centre

•

The big renovation project of Jämeräntaival 3, 5 and 7 was partly completed in 2018, and the property’s topping out was celebrated in Servin mökki in November 2018.

The topping out of Otaniemi’s Miestentie was celebrated in autumn 2018. At the turn of the year, 131 new apartments were completed in the property.

•

The planning of Otakaari and Servinniemi have advanced in 2018, and the plans will be presented to the City Board for approval in spring 2019.

The Student Centre is a project related to building the Aalto community, whose goal is to get the operations of AYY, Aalto University Business Students (KY) and Teknologföreningen (TF) under the same roof.

The theme of 2018 was the strong involvement of the community in the planning as well as increasing awareness of the project among associations, volunteers, the Representative Council and members alike.

If realised, the Student Centre would offer a new kind of event platform and a living room shared by all Aalto people in the most central location on campus.

Association trainings were developed.

The scoring of organisations’ grants was lightly renewed.

The magazine’s operations continued in the usual manner, and it was published four times during the year. Some of the magazine’s contents were in Finnish and some in English.

About a dozen people took part in making the magazine.

The Organisation Sector executed the new Event Organiser Guide in cooperation with the Community Sector.

During the year, the most discussion arose from the Inside Joke story on inappropriate behaviour and the values of the Aalto community, which was also noted in other media.

Staff During 2018, 16 persons were recruited for AYY into various positions. A total of 7 persons were hired as permanent employees. The remaining 9 persons were hired as fixed-term employees, either to work on a project, as higher education interns or to cover permanent employees’ study or parental leave.

A three-year Personnel Strategy was also implemented for the first time during the year and the equality plans updated for the next three years.

Artistic Activities

In 2018, AYY celebrated the creativity of Aalto people with the Year of Arts. A separate working group was put together for this, and the goal was to bring out the artistic side of the whole membership as well as the members’ different ways to express their creativity. During the spring and summer, the Väre Wall Art competition and the Maarintie 8 light installation competition were organised in cooperation with Aalto University.

In the autumn, the Elossa film festival featuring ten screenings was executed together with Kino Tapiola and Kino Sheryl. The pinnacle of the Year of Arts was the Otaniemi Night of Arts festival that took place on Saturday 6 Oct. The interdisciplinary event run by students featured more than 50 activities around the campus and involved dozens of different organisations.

In 2018, the Campus Section organised a campus sauna, Flower Day with a new concept and the Wappurieha declaration. Particularly pleasant surprises were the amount of people taking part in cleaning up the campus at the Village clean-up and the Village Christmas Party that has regained its popularity.

From spring to autumn, the Section was kept busy especially by the Otaniemi bike collection in which the bicycles abandoned in bike racks and storage rooms were collected and sold to a new home or donated for recycling.

Campus Section

The Housing side was developing the Castle Warden operations transferred back to the Campus Section, organised inspiring living-related competitions and, during the autumn, put on a whole themed week around the central themes of student housing.

Aalto Open Air, organised in the spring, brought the community’s own performers to the Wappu opening.

New features were the party at Amfi lasting into the night and the tent village put on in the spirit of festivals, where the bravest spent the night. AYY’s sold-out 8th Annual Ball was held in Koskenranta in warm weather, and the following day’s brunch traditionally took place in Smökki. Autumn started at speed, with Aava being involved with organising Aalto Party in the orientation week and Dipoli filling out with Aalto Afterparty-goers in the evening. Supersillis, which ended the orientation week, was done in cooperation with KUVA and the Teekkari Section, and the cooperation continued on Aalto Amazing Race in October.

The year ended with the Hugo Gala, in which the community’s accomplished associations and similar groups were awarded. The sports operations raised their profile during the year, with LTMK organising an all-day multi-discipline tournament with about 250 student participants from across Aalto.

The Teekkari Section and its committees organised about 35 Teekkari-spirited events during the year for a total of more than 10 000 visitors. Of the events, especially the Dipoli Wappu, the Otatarha Race and the Teekkari Tradition Party surprised with their popularity. The Teekkari Section also celebrated the 125-year history of the Teekkari cap with a picture crossing generational borders taken at Ullanlinnanmäki at Wappu.

In addition, a Teekkari cap monument was erected outside Jämeräntaival 1, with the contest-winning idea coming from a group of friends calling themselves Teekkarikiviyhdistys.

Teekkari Section

Mosaic

In early October, Teknologföreningen and the Guild of Architecture approached the Teekkari Section and the AYY Board to change the study field criteria for the Teekkari cap. The Teekkari Section participated in the discussion on the topic.

Mosaic was busy organising events for the whole Aalto community with an international emphasis, and especially the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and Halloween were positive surprises in terms of popularity. The Section’s visibility among the community was increased, and events were organised more than ever also in cooperation with other operators. The Section also took part in the Year of Arts activities by curating the programme of the Elossa film festival and organising the Dinner in the Dark subevent at Otaniemi Night of Arts.

Mosaic was also involved with organising the My Career in Finland event that was aimed at international students and brought a lot of students and working life representatives interested in the topic to Dipoli.

The Polyteekkari Museum’s year was once again busier than the last, with the Museum having more than 5 000 visitors. Almost 200 freshman and cap tours and other tours of the Museum were organised as part of the basic operations. With the tours, other visits and events combined, the Museum offered its guests experiences on 275 occasions. The Museum was at its busiest during the autumn term as the JMT3 renovations, due to begin in spring 2019, motivated guilds to organise more freshman tours than usual already in autumn.

Polyteekkari Museum

The end of the year saw the recordings of the Museum film, set to replace tours of the Museum, being prepared and executed with the irreplaceable help of OUBS ry. On a Saturday in December, more than 60 volunteers gathered at the Museum to help pack and move the items, materials and some surprising stuff. The Museum was bid farewell just before Christmas, and autumn 2019 will see a return to the basement museum that has been reformed both technically and in terms of content.
