hen I was little, someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said a tiger. I really don’t remember why, but I was reminded of this when I read I Want To Be A Dolphin, a book written by Children’s Author and Chicagoan, Terrilyn S. Alexander. This issue was inspired by that book (available at Chicago Public Libraries and on Amazon) AND by the upcoming musical Freaky Friday, being presented by Porchlight Music Theatre this spring (porchlightmusictheatre.org). I have loved everything I’ve seen at Porchlight, and I am really looking forward to Freaky Friday. Both Freaky Friday and I Want To Be a Dolphin explore the idea of what it would be like to be someone else for a day—human or animal. We opened that fantasy up to our writers and artists in CPS, and you will find their clever responses inside. Enjoy! —Rachel

er shoes fit too small, my skin screams as her clothes tighten around my body. My hair tangles as I run my fingers through her hair, and my forehead has become the home of dozens of red dots. My voice is loud and obnoxious. It yells for attention. My hands run through my face as I stare for a long time in the mirror. My eyes are now puffy and red, releasing tears that aren’t mine. My body is thin and small. This isn’t me...I’m not in my body. I’m Her…. I’m heading up the stairs, walking towards my locker, only to find myself there. Me. Standing in front of me. I look at myself, my heart is racing. She’s me…. I back up to her locker, I don’t know her combination. Everyone is staring at me, now they’re turning to each other, whispering, about me… Me, Me, Me…. They’re using words only I ever worried about hearing. These words punch me in the stomach like a soccer ball being kicked around until it finally hits me. I rush up the stairs to my homeroom, accidentally bumping into people. “Watch where you’re going b----” I recognized that voice. It was one of my friends. My friends don’t like me. My friends don’t like Her. I’m in my homeroom now, Me is sitting with my other group of friends. They’re all uncomfortable and annoyed by Me. The way I talk loud enough for the people across to hear. How loud and obnoxious I laugh. Except it’s not me. It’s Her. But people are starting to hate me. The me in Her body. And now the hate is rising on Me. Because of Her. I want to cry. I want to scream. I have no one to talk to. No one likes Me. No one likes Her. I’m Her. Her. Her. Her. I can’t take it. I can’t take my own hate. This needs to end. Make It Stop…. I suddenly wake up. In my room. In my bed. In my body. I look in the mirror, and my eyes turn red and puffy. This time, I’m crying my own tears. I’ll reconsider my actions today. Maybe...I’ll be nicer. The advantages of being a cheetah is that you can run very fast the disadvantages of being a cheetah is you get in a lot of fights and get hunted. oday I’ll be telling you if I could be something else rather than myself, I would be a dolphin. If I was a dolphin for a day I would swim all day and go as deep as I can in the ocean and I would swim with all the fish that there are in the ocean. The advantages of being a dolphin are that you live in the ocean and you can swim all you want without stopping. One disadvantage of being a dolphin is that you can get eaten by bigger animals than you for example by a shark or a whale. Finally what I would miss about being myself is my family, friends, and playing with my dog. —Joanna G.

What I would do if I was that person is make music every day so people could hear my songs and I could be the most famous DJ. The bad things are my dog (who is in my body and doesn’t understand what humans do) wouldn’t know what to do at school or at my gymnastics (and I compete at gymnastics! Some disadvantages about being this animal (Bird) is that you wouldn’t know how to talk or go to school to learn and you would not know your directions for navigation or when a bird flies it does not know where north is, south, east or west so they would get lost easily. One advantage is I would have all this money. One disadvantage is people could take advantage of me. One thing I would miss is my height. —Jaylen H.

he animal I would be is a zebra because I love them but some zebras don’t have stripes. The coat that’s on the zebra keeps you warm. The coat is so big that it covers the whole body. Some things that I would do as a zebra is keep people safe help people and some zebras live in Africa, every zebra has a unique pattern of black and white stripes some zebras are part of the Equidae family along with horses and donkeys. Some advantages of being a zebra are that the stripes may help zebras camouflage themselves and escape from lions and other predators, they can avoid bites from flies they also can control body heat you can adjust your body temperature. The disadvantage is that zebras must spend a considerable part of their day feeding to maintain the high rate of intake. The increased time spent foraging exposes them to greater risks of predation. —Lakisha C.

f I would want to switch bodies with an animal for a day, it would be a cheetah because they are really fast. I would like to be a cheetah because I am not faster than my friends, my friends are faster than me. So, that’s the reason why I would want to be a cheetah. But the thing that I am missing about myself is I do not want to eat other animals. And that’s the reason I would want to be a cheetah. —Melanie S.

f I could be an animal, I would be an alligator. Alligators live in the water, and they can swim very fast. Furthermore, they are green, so they can camouflage into their surroundings. I would eat large animals, like ostriches, and I would have my own treehouse, with an elevator. Moreover, I would have tropical birds brush my teeth for me every morning. I think it would be exciting to be an alligator, because I would be able to enjoy the beautiful wildlife scenery, and it would be easier to hide from more ferocious animals than in the desert or the savanna. —Amilo R.

I can get hurt very easily and or pass out. I would miss not having so much attention on me and not being able to go shopping or being with my friends. t’s hard to choose just one person or animal to switch places with, so I would choose to spread it out over a week. Monday, I’d switch places with a basketball player, like Lebron James, and feel what it’s like to be really tall and athletic. Tuesday, I’d try out life as a hippopotamus to see what it’s like to be one of the most dangerous animals in the world. Wednesday, I’d choose someone from the past, like George Washington, so that I can experience what it was like when the United States won independence. Thursday, I’d stick closer to home and choose to swap with my dad so I can see things from his point of view. Friday, I’d choose Bill Gates so that I could be smart, rich and help make the world a better place. Saturday, I’d like to switch places with someone my age who lives in Sweden and see what his life is like. What I would like to be for a day is a white shark because it can sense bits of blood from miles. A shark can pounce high. It’s the largest meat eater. It has really good hearing and can see really good.
