Dear Readers, This issue is all about Inventions. Students wrote and drew about inventions they use daily, that changed the course of the world and/or affected their lives most. Some also came up with their own inventions to make life easier, better or just more fun.

The thought and creativity they put into their submissions are (as always) impressive.

For our spring issue we are focusing on Kindness (see prompts on the opposite page). I recently saw the movie Wonder. I highly recommend it—and the book on which it was based—to everyone (young and old). In Wonder, a teacher named Mr. Browne gives his students precpts every month.

Two of my favorites are: When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind. —Dr. Wayne W. Dyer Kind words do not cost much. Yet they accomplish much.

—Blaise Pascal I’m looking forward to our Kindess issue, and I’m excited to be partnering with TrueStar for that issue as well (see their ad on page 3, and check them out at www.truestarjr.com). Our spring issue will include some submissions from TrueStar students, and some StudentsXpress students will have their work published in an upcoming issue of TrueStar Jr. magazine. I very much admire the women who started TrueStar, and I’m looking forward to our collaboration.

If I was to invent something it would be called “Bad Alert.”

The Bad Alert is useful for policemen to scan people and it tells if the person is a criminal so the policemen can put them in jail before they do harm. And if they scan a serial killer or worse that can decide on whether or not to give them the death penalty. I think it will be a success. I came up with this because I don’t like the fact that there’s bad people in the world. I visualized it and I thought about what it can be used for. —Kaniya J. One of the most important inventions that I do daily is soccer. This is an important invention to me because I love soccer and without it I don’t know what I would do.

If soccer wasn’t invented I probably wouldn’t care but since it is invented I really really really care about it. I also play soccer a lot so that is why I care about it so much.

So that is my invention that I use daily. —Ciara M. Musical.ly has affected my life because you can dance and sing on Musical.ly. I like to dance and I like to sing because I want to show people my talent. I like being on Musical.ly because I like when people give me positive comments. I like being able to share with people more than my family. Last I love Musical.ly because most people love when I share my music and dancing videos because they are very positive. —Dejanae B. I am a foodie. I love food. So of course my favorite invention is the refrigerator. It’s so awesome. It keeps the milk cold and the cheese fresh. It has a special place for butter and the water filter. A little place for the mustard. It can store all my favorite foods and when I go to eat them they will be ice cold. I would like to thank the person who invented the refrigerator. —Anna H. The inventions that changed my life are cell phones, tablets, and game systems and without them I would be miserable. The negative things I have to say about these things is that it can distract you from your school work.

They have changed the course of history, but don’t you think they are kind of annoying.

Like on Christmas you get a new text message every five seconds saying “Merry Christmas.”

The one thing I don’t like the most is when your phone rings at the worst moment.

There are some good sides to having a phone.

You can carry it with you everywhere you go.

Your phone carries all this information in one tiny device.

Things come in a instant on your phone.

Okay so I guess phones aren’t that bad, but I didn’t say that they were that good either.

Just keep that in mind.

Ode to a Cell Phone The cell phone a small, wondrous invention that is so prized.

The intense knowledge kept within a box with a case and screen is rather marvelous.

When the power runs out on my cell phone I slump and my life is sad.

I invented a robot. My robot can not die. And it made me some wings.

My wings connect to my body and the robot can come back to pieces.

The wonderful sensation of a new text or call sends a rush of satisfaction through my blood.

As the day draws to an end I plug my cell phone in to use another day.

Bikes because I love bike riding with my dad mostly every weekend.

I also like bikes because they are a lot of fun to ride. I love my bike because it is purple with teal and dark blue flowers. I love biking so much I could ride it forever.

Inventions

Inventions can be useful, like a computer or a phone, But when inventions get out of hand, They can just barely be overthrown!

I once knew a guy who tried to make a system to detect burglary But ended up needing surgery!

I would invent a museum that will give people that have cancer and other diseases medicine.

Why, because it would help the kids and people of the world.

An invention that I would like to make is invisible food coloring so you could put it on a banana and you would be eating the banana but no one can see the banana.

Swhishlo Sometimes when you write a lot parts of your hand start to hurt. Swhishlo is a pillow on your pencil. When parts of your hand hurt Swhishlo will comfort your hand.

One invention I use daily is running water, and it is important to me because I use it literally all day, every day. Think about it, how many times do you use running water just in the first hour after you wake up? This is my morning routine without running water: I wake up, change out of my pajamas and into my clothes, then go to the bathroom, wait nope! Then I wash my face and hands, wait never mind! Then I brush my teeth, wait I can’t! See? And that’s just in 5 minutes!

I could list EVERYTHING but the list would be 8 trillion miles long, right?

—Rei F. I felt happy when I got my iPad for Christmas last year. The iPad gives me something to do when I don’t have school. The best thing about my iPad is the math games. I learn about addition, multiplication, subtraction and division. I can watch YouTube On my iPad. My favorite YouTube programs are “Kid TV” and “CJ So Cool.” I take a lot of pictures with my iPad and save them. The iPad is a great invention for kids because you can learn math, you can watch TV programs and take pictures with it. —Makhiya D.

An invention I use daily is my iPad. I use it for entertainment and my homework. If I didn’t have it then I wouldn’t be able to use it for homework or information or even entertainment! It is very important to me and if I didn’t have it then I would be bored all the time! This is probably my favorite invention ever! —Leilani F. If I could invent anything, I would invent Holo-Time. It would be just like FaceTime, but instead of looking at a screen, you would be looking at a hologram. You would put your phone on the floor, and the hologram would project out of it. I think it would be super cool to see your friend in 3-D instead of 2-D. —Ashley W.

My invention is a car that can go underwater and you can’t open windows because the car shouldn’t have water in it. You don’t have to drive because there is a self drive. —Dillon M.

Carmen C. Television programs are just too boring! I have a TV with YouTube. It is a great invention. It has a lot of shows for kids and parents. It’s important to me because I can learn new words. YouTube has new shows every day and it’s fun to watch.

You should not watch shows that are intended for grown-ups.

People who are entertaining us on YouTube please keep making good ideas so people can be entertained and educated.

An invention that has helped me in my life is my tablet because I can look on YouTube or look up things.

My tablet can also help me with my homework.

When I got my birthday present last May 21, I never knew how much fun it could be. I got my first cell phone! I took pictures of myself, my baby sister and me, and a picture of my baby sister.

I downloaded games from the Apple Store, and I watched YouTube videos. I put the phone number in the phone for people whose house I go to. I used to the calculator on the phone for math homework. I found out that phones are fun and important because I can call my mother and she can call me if there is an emergency. —Tyanna D.

Phones are Important Phones are very important in our world today. They are important because they provide us with information and they take really good pictures. I use my phone every day.

The main reason phones are important is because they have many uses. One use is being able to call people. If there is an emergency, you can call the police or fire department. You don’t have to be stuck at home without any help.

You can use your phones to take pictures of your family and friends. You don’t have to have a photo album anymore. When I am by myself I use my phone to look at pictures.

Those pictures make me smile. We were on a field trip last week and we saw many people taking pictures. Some of the parents took pictures of their children. The parents were able to see the pictures right away and everybody laughed. Taking pictures on a phone is so much fun.

In conclusion, phones are very useful. We need them for many things. If we did not have phones, we would not be able to call or look at pictures. The resources that a phone has are important. —Ta’nyla W. My invention is an ultimate clothes Christmas 2015 was the best ever! My mother dresser. Something that I would like to invent is a limo with no roof and there would always be a parking spot and if you want to have parties in your no-roof limo. I came up with this invention because if you have a big family your family can have enough room for most family and friends.

—Dajanai O. Headphones are the Best Invention Ever Some people would not consider headphones to be a good invention, but I do. Without headphones, I would not be able to do things privately. Everywhere I go there are people around. They are always looking at me and minding my business. They never leave me alone. Sometimes I want to be by myself to chill. Having headphones helps me enjoy my privacy.

Headphones are very nice to have. They are very good if you want to lock out the noise around you. Where I live, it is very noisy. There are houses being built next door so there are a lot of construction trucks in the neighborhood and they make a lot of noise. I also live near the railroad trains and they make a lot of noise too. So I go into my room and put my headphones in my computer and I listen to music and relax. My music is soothing and keeps me from thinking about all the noise that is in my neighborhood.

Headphones are easy to carry. They are small and just fit in your pocket. I use them all the time because they are convenient. I could be at the park or in my basement. It does not matter. My headphones are always with me.

As you can see now, headphones are a good invention.

I don’t know who made them, but I’m happy somebody did. Headphones are amazing to have because they give you privacy and are easy to carry around with you.

Out of all things that have tremendously affected my life, it’s books. Books! I think books are awesome because they give you entertainment, but also some books like the dictionary, atlas, and the encyclopedia, give you knowledge, and you really can’t live without knowledge. That may sound stupid, but think about it. Take cookbooks. If you didn’t know how to cook chocolate chip cookies and you ate them raw you would get sick. Also, I bet you set the oven to too high, and maybe that would light your house on fire.

Everlasting Life My invention is the “Everlasting Life.” It’s a machine that can save anyone at all. It can cure you from cancer, HIV or pneumonia.

Whatever it is my machine can save you or a loved one.

I would like to invent a bike that would transform into a car to make life easier because the car runs off of air. But if you don’t feel like driving you can ride your bike that can transform into a car. So you can drive your car any day you want because your car/bike comes with a built-in air pump that never runs out of air. So you can ride your bike or if you get tired of pedaling you can drive your car. Adults only.

My Icey Cup Invention 1000 tells the time. And every time you press on it it will start icey. Then you press what flavor you want. Finally it will make an icey cup. Something that was invented was the cell phone. It changed the course of the world by being able to call people on it. Also it’s very useful in finding your way to somewhere. It’s also fun for kids to use when they are bored or something. Pros are: it can be educational, it can help you find your way, it’s fun for grown-ups and kids to play, you can download apps on it. A phone was invented and has changed the course of the world both positively and negatively. The positive impact is that people can now connect in a short amount of time. The negative impact is that now people don’t spend enough time with each other. They spend most of their time on their phones. A phone is also dangerous because if you drop it it will shatter and some people may cut their feet or other injuries. But phones are portable and can entertain humans when we are bored. We can also look up information much quicker on a phone than in a dictionary or encyclopedia. But we can waste knowledge and damage our eyes if we look at one for long enough. —Sophie

The first

Inventions are definitely part of our daily life. If you don’t think inventions are important then imagine this. You are a regular person forty-five thousand years ago. You live in a cave because houses and the building tools haven’t been invented yet. You are starving because you definitely don’t have grocery stores yet and you can’t hunt because you haven’t invented spears. You see a large mammoth pass by. You are so desperate you run out and start hitting it.

Unfortunately, your nails aren’t very sharp and instead of meat you are left with one very angry (and very big) mammoth. RUN!!! On the other hand imagine you’re a few hundred years in the future. You get to school by whizzing through tube systems. Just on time. Then your teacher mentions your homework. You jump back into the tube system, grab your homework off the kitchen table, and are back in your seat in less than thirty seconds. —Chloe R.

Computers have helped me the most because they can do so many things.

The thing that I would like to invent is a Weapon Law. I don’t see why we need weapons. If we only people don’t have weapons, we wouldn’t worry about people hurting each other. My invention: TV glasses With my invention you can throw out your TV because I’m working on TV glasses. The picture will show on the glasses. The sound will come out of the speakers on each side of the glasses. You press little buttons to turn it on and off and change the stations. You press the top to turn up the volume and you press the bottom to lower the volume. You have to charge it every night. An invention that positively affected my life is a refrigerator. Because it keeps your food cold which is the food that I eat every day.

Some refrigerators make ice and have water on/in their refrigerator. If we did not have refrigerators life would be HORRIBLE. Because we would have to eat food right away before it goes bad from sitting out. —Kelly A.

An invention that I use daily is my TV. I love TV! And TV is important to me because without TV I could not watch my favorite shows. —Jamya O. Technology is one of the things that change our course of life. It changes how we live and think. More deaths have been caused because of technology. The internet, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media, phones, Xbox, PS4 and other consoles like that change how we think. But there are good things about technology not just bad things.

The good things about our technology today is you can make good money off it. You can also be entertained by technology. Such as an Xbox. You can play it when you’re bored. There are so many good and bads to technology.

Back then when technology wasn’t out the kids went outside to have fun. That is one of the bad parts about technology.

Today kids stay in the house and they don’t go outside to play even if it’s nice out. This is how technology changes our course of life. —Aaron W.

Xbox Vulture X2 I plan on making a better Xbox or controller designed better than PS4 scuf controller.

I plan on calling it the Vulture X2 and the attachments to come with it are controller joysticks extension and also to make where it’s easy to shoot is triggers where you put the tips of your fingers at to aim faster, shoot faster, or just get around your Xbox faster. My iPhone is very good at keeping me connected to my friends. For example, I use my iPhone to call people in my classroom. I do not have to wait to see them at school to do that. Calling my friends on the phone is easy. I just dial their numbers and I start talking to them. I can even FaceTime them which is good because I get to see what they look like.

Another reason the iPhone is a great invention is because it is full of resources like the Internet. When I am at home, I use my phone to do my homework. I log onto Compass Learning and I learn how to do my math and reading. I also use the iPhone to play educational games.

I play other games too on my phone. When we are in class and I do not know something, I can look it up on my phone. Sometimes I do not know what something looks like so I press images on my phone and I can see how it really is.

Cars have changed the world in so many ways! The black, gray, blue, red, white and many other colors are fascinating. No two are the same. Cars represent the personality of the driver.

Cars have evolved so much and used to go 12 mph! Now they go hundreds of mph! I am so glad they are around because without them, I would have to walk everywhere. Cars aren’t always good and useful though! They keep you unsocial and keep you from riding buses to meet new faces. They also create air pollution and global warming. Life without a phone Life without a phone would be horrible!

My Phone The best invention ever is the phone. I use my phone every day. It is very useful. Two useful things you can do on a phone is use the different apps and take pictures.

One way I use my phone is to take pictures. When I was on my field trip to the Art Institute, I used my phone to take pretty pictures of the building and artwork. We went to the park and I took pictures and I showed them to my mom when I got home. She was so happy because I had a good time. She felt like she was there at the park even though she was not.

Phones have many apps that you can use. On my phone, my favorite apps help me play games. I can be anywhere and be entertained. When I am taking a long ride with my parents, I sit back and enjoy the ride while listening to music. I can play any kind of rap music on my phone. I just go to YouTube and press play. I make Musical.ly videos on my phone.

The best thing about a phone is you can use it to call people. You can talk to your friends all over the world. When you cannot see people, you can call them and know about their lives.

My iPhone The most important invention is the iPhone. The reason why I say that is because the iPhone can do more things than other phones before. The iPhone is good for calling people face to face, taking pictures and looking at them on your phone and it is easy to carry around with you.

One thing that you can do on an iPhone is FaceTime people. You can see their faces as you talk to them. That is especially good because it feels like you are right next to them. I have a cousin who lives in Minnesota. She calls me on my iPhone and we FaceTime. We have a lot of fun because we see each other.

All iPhones take beautiful pictures. Many years ago people had to take pictures in cameras that could not instantly display them. People had to wait in long lines just to see their pictures. Now, you can see pictures right away when you take them on your iPhone and you can delete the ones you do not like.

One more reason I like the iPhone is because it can fit right in your pocket. That makes carrying it around easier. Nobody wants to carry photo albums with you.

They are too big and they get in the way. When I want to show my friends what I am doing, I just take out my phone.

An invention that really changed the world in both positive and negative ways is the sewing machine. In a positive way, people got jobs selling clothing in stores. People had more options and there was more quantities of clothing which allowed people to have more clothing. Also, clothing used to be handmade by the woman in the house. It would take quite a long time to make several pairs of clothing for the whole family. Sewing machines are more efficient and eliminate the woman’s extremely hard work of making clothes all day. But they also eliminated people who depended on hand sewing.

Also sewing machine store-bought clothing is more expensive than hand sewing, which means people with less money cannot afford clothing from stores. Sewing machines are expensive to buy to own.

Something that I would like to invent to make life more fun is a backyard waterpark. I came up with this invention because I know everyone in the whole world likes waterparks and I thought hey wouldn’t it be cool if someone could have a waterpark at their house?

And then I thought of the backyard waterpark.

Each backyard waterpark costs $3500. Each backyard waterpark has 15 long waterslides and 50 short waterslides. There’s one wave pool and 4 racer slides.

Yaroslav wanted the machine to be shaped like a printer, but without the open paper slot. Just the beige, metallic, hollow rectangle that Yaro had seen in so many offices. The machine would have buttons on the front, and some writing on the side. The writing would say, “Водяной трансформатор” or “Water Transformer.” Since Yaro had lived most of his life in Russia, he thought it would be cool to put some Russian writing on it.

The machine could transform water into anything.

My sister had a baby in May, so now I am an aunt. When I visit them, I love playing with my nephew except for diaper changing time. So I would invent a diaper changing machine so I wouldn’t have to see or smell a dirty diaper.
