You are one of the lucky few to receive a free Empowerment Planner! We feel so blessed to be able to provide this resource for you, and we wish we could print unlimited copies. This planner was created specifically for women in prison and/or women in transition. This project started when we received a letter from a woman named Krystal who was incarcerated in a Texas prison. She wrote to us because she used to use our planners, but she was unable to have one in prison because of the metal binding. We were extremely touched by the kind words in her letter, and just how much positivity and hope our planner was able to give her during a trying time in her life. We purchased wire cutters, cut out the metal binding and bound the planner with a plastic spiral. We then mailed the planner to her with a note about second chances and the seed was planted. Our mission at bloom is to inspire and empower women. A planner is so much more than paper; we know how a planner can empower you to take control of your life. Partnering with Arouet, we held focus groups with incarcerated women and recent transitions to find out just what tools they wish they had when they were in your shoes. We are so proud to be able to donate these planners to thousands of women like you and provide a tool to help you stay organized and on track. We hope you find this planner useful, and that it helps you become the best version of yourself. Someone is here. Someone cares. We believe in you. Sincerely,

The

ADVICE FROM PAST INMATES You are not alone! Thousands of women have been in your shoes, and they want to see you succeed. We’ve curated some advice from past inmates, post release. Here is what they wanted to share with you: “Don't let your past define you. Everyone makes mistakes. It is how you fix those mistakes that defines the true character of a person. Never give up on yourself because of where you are or what you have done. Be knowledgeable, be powerful, be empowered, and you will find something inside of yourself that you thought was lost. You will find yourself and that is the most beautiful thing of all.” - Jennifer N.
“Stop worrying about what you are going to when you get out. Start worrying about what you need to do to stay out.” - Brandy S. “My best piece of advice is to stay busy. The most satisfaction and confidence comes from accomplishment. Even small things.” - Sam G. “Be patient. Your life didn’t get this way overnight, you will not re-build overnight. Don’t 'should' on yourself. Make a decision and go to any length to make good on it. Crawl if you must, but keep moving. Not everyone deserves a front row seat in your life. Don’t deny someone the gift of helping, reach out.” - Virginia M. “Believe in your infinite possibilities, miracle after miracle, and wonders never cease! Everything with love!” - Cristy C. "Be grateful and be thankful that you are alive and no longer where you once were. Every minute spent worrying about "the way things were" is a moment stolen from "the way things can be." - Deborah J. “Let go of who you think you should be in order to be who you really are. Spend this time figuring out what your perfect is and know that is enough and then embrace your enough. Identify what your values are and stick to them. DO NOT buckle under pressure! Learn from those who paved the way. Show appreciation. Get personal, reach out, connect, listen, have empathy and offer support. Don’t just stand there - meet new people, try new things and NEVER stop learning! Focus on the solution, not the problem. Own your actions. Say what you mean and do what you say. Create a mental photograph of how you want your life to be then journal on how to make your photograph a reality. Embrace vulnerability.” - Deborah J. “I am who I am today, because I once wore orange, and now orange is my favorite color. You can choose how you allow this time to define you, it can be your scarlet letter or can be the opportunity that enabled you to become the best version of yourself.” - Michelle C.

O

ORGANIZE PRIORITIES: What is the first step in preparing for this goal? What might have to take a back seat in the meantime?

FORGIVE YOURSELF We tend to be harder on ourselves than anyone else making the same mistake. Give yourself love, compassion, and understanding and forgive yourself as you would forgive a good friend. • What do you need to forgive yourself for?

• What do you potentially lose in your life by not forgiving yourself?

• What space in your mind is taken up with this distraction?

• What do you feel in control of by forgiving yourself?

• What do you need to do in order to relinquish that control?

Challenges, difficulties, mistakes, hurtful events, hard moments in my life

Why I'm grateful for them, what it taught me, what skills I gained

I, , am flawed, as every person is, but I deserve to be freed of fear and resentment of my mistakes as they've taught me lessons that I keep with me every day. Forgiveness is love. I will choose to let go of negativity I have been living with and love myself exactly as I am from now to forever. X Give Back Planner pgs 1-156_purple _ one week per page.indd 13

We all face choices every day that will either lead us towards our values and desired identity or away from them. Develop small, effective habits that constantly guide you towards larger goals by listing the habits you would like to create. Color the corresponding square when you perform the habit each day. After one month, you'll have 10 new habits to help you be your best you.

Benefits of meditation include decreased stress, higher brain function, more effective decision making and increased attention span. Use these steps to start benefiting from regular meditation today.

1.

2.

FIND A QUIET SPOT You don't want to be disturbed.

SIT COMFORTABLY Keep a straight but relaxed back. Relax your shoulders, arms and legs.

7.

3.

PRACTICE DAILY Make meditation a habit. Use our tracker below and see how many streaks you can get.

FOCUS ON YOUR BREATH Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, filling your belly like a balloon. Exhale slowy through your mouth.

6.

4.

AIM FOR 5 MINUTES EACH DAY If that’s too much, start with 1 and work your way up.

5. RETURN TO YOUR BREATH As your thoughts pass, bring your attention back to the present by focusing on your inhales and exhales.

NOTICE YOUR THOUGHTS It’s natural to have your mind race during a meditation. Don’t fight or judge your thoughts, simply notice what pops up.

Meditate daily and mark off each day. See how long of a streak you can get going and notice the change in your energy daily. 1

Anything can be addicting. Addiction occurs when a substance or activity allows for your goals and needs to lose priority. A behavioral addiction is triggered by an action made to an unhealthy degree or in an unhealthy manner. A substance addiction relies on a physical need for a specific thing, typically drugs or alcohol. Answer the questions below to recognize if you have an addiction.

• Do you have a compulsion and use anything that can be ingested? Y / N • Does the compulsion cause you to have physical symptoms? Y/N • Does it affect the way you think? Y/N • What stimulation causes a craving?

• Have you ever attempted to not give in to the complusion and succeeded? If your attempt failed, why?

• What programs or activities do you engage in to break the cycle?

List red flags for triggers, who you can turn to for support in a time of struggle, and ways to distract yourself from relapsing on the behavior or substance.

Analyze your relationships before reaching out to people from your past and before you welcome new people into your life. Healthy relationships are key to making the right choices. A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP: brings you more happiness than stress. is based on equality and respect. is supportive, offering reassurance and encouragement. strives for compromising solutions in disagreements. requires space and personal privacy. demonstrates acts of kindness. AN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP: is judgemental and unforgiving. is possessive or jealous of whom you associate with. is unconcerned with your needs. is physically and/or verbally combative or aggressive. is controlling, manipulative, or threatening. is unsupportive or encourages old, negative behaviors.

What you are going through/have been through is tough, but you are tougher. You will climb your mountains and conquer your fears. Recognize the misconceptions you might already have in your head and know that there is hope; this is just a hurdle in your life. Your past does not define you.

FALSE TRUTHS

REALITY

I won't have a support system. I'll find myself alone.

There are organizations and plenty of others who have been in your shoes that are here to help you. bloom and Arouet included; the book you have in your hands has been made with love solely to help you succeed.

My Parole Officer is waiting for and expecting me to violate my parole regulations.

They want to see you better yourself. They are there to give you the right tools and help you stay out of prison.

I won't be able to get a job.

In a poll, 92% of employers said they do consider hiring men and women who were previously incarcerated (U.S. Department of Labor). Present yourself as employable. See the "Job Interview Tips" page.

The classes I have to attend will be awful.

You are in a safe spot. You can be vulnerable and share and listen from those who know what you're going through.

I'll be alone if I'm released in a city/state where nobody knows me.

While this can be intimidating, it is also empowering when you consider it from a different perspective. No one knows you, so no one knows your past life. You have a fresh start. Own it!

Connect with others who have faced similar obstacles. See our Resources page at the front of your planner for weblinks and phone numbers.

Remember that things may not go according to plan - and that's okay! You may find yourself overwhelmed with the number of options you have. If you find yourself having a panic attack, remember you are in absolutely no physical danger and this feeling will pass. Splash water on your face, breath deeply, close your eyes, and/or write down your thoughts,

1. RESEARCH PREVIOUS EMPLOYEES Knowing what the company is looking for in someone's skill set or resume can help you focus on what to highlight in your interview. By finding people (on LinkedIn or InDeed.com) who actually got the job and by scanning their public resume, you can get an idea of what you need to do to get where they are/were.

2. DRESS APPROPRIATELY Keep your outfit modest, professional, and neutral in color (nothing distracting, bright or overly patterned.) If you choose to wear heels, make sure you can walk in them before walking in to the building.

3. ARRIVE EARLY But not too early; let your interviewer prep for your arrival. 10 minutes early is perfect.

4. RELAX AND BREATHE Be yourself, slow down your breathing, and speak slowly and clearly. Don't tap your fingers, shake your feet, or click your pen. Keep your hands in a relaxed position on your lap,

5. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU BRING TO THE COMPANY The interview isn't really about you, it's about service to the company. Know their story and explain how you can add to it (get specific if you can!)

6. HAVE A POSITIVE, FRIENDLY ATTITUDE No one wants to bring someone onto their team that complains, is arrogant, or expects to receive without giving first.

7. DON'T INTERRUPT THE INTERVIEWER Interrupting (even if you want to branch off specifically about a talking point) means that you aren't fully listening to what the interviewer is saying. Wait until they are finished with the thought first.

8. ADDRESSING YOUR CRIME If you are asked about your time in prison, state the fact that it is a part of your past, but don't give details of what happened. State the obstacles you've overcome, the actions you're taking to improve yourself, and how those actions connect to the position you are applying to.

9. DON'T GET ATTACHED Remember that it's just as important that you feel like the company is a good fit for your as you are a good fit for them. An interview is a two way road; be prepared to ask questions, too.

10. EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST IN THE JOB Close the interview by asking what the next steps are.

11. SEND A THANK YOU FOLLOW UP Be sure to email your appreciation for their time and/or write a thank you card to your interviewer(s) within 24 hours.
