First Friday Speaker Series

Nicollet Island Pavilion The Frist Friday Speaker Series brings together hundreds of alumni, students, faculty and staff members, and friends for thoughtful presentations by community members. Join us for this month’s speaker, Sam Kaplan, former US Ambassador to Morocco, and Sylvia Chessen Kaplan. Pre-registration is required and the cost is $25 per person. Transportation to this event is not provided. More information about registering will be included in your confirmation email.

Enjoy the opportunity to play any of the electronic and table games, first come, first serve in ‘85 (1st Floor, Anderson Student Center), Scooters (1st Floor, Anderson Student Center), or the Bowling Alley (Lower Level, Anderson Student Center). Most games are free to minimal cost with current student ID. For those families and guests who like to bowl, each game is $1.00 per person and shoes are free.

The demands of life can quickly distract us from feeling well, whole, and otherwise human. Mindfulness Practice honors these existential needs by directing our attention to the present moment, without being critical of ourselves or being carried away by thought. Whether you are experienced or new to mindfulness practice, please consider joining us in the Wellness Center for a guided meditation session. Your facilitator, Dr. Brendel, regularly facilitates workshops and provides guest lectures on mindfulness practice.

One Month Down: A Few More To Go - Family Transitions Part II Hearth Room, Anderson Student Center The tears! The fun! The changes! Sending a student off to college is a series of ups and downs that transcends understanding! Discussion of the many issues and emotional stresses arising from the changing relationship between a college student and his or her family.

Captain James Lovell, Apollo 13: A successful Failure Woulfe Alumni Hall, Anderson Student Center A great American hero, astronaut Jim Lovell is most famous for his role in the American space age, specifically for his calm and careful command of Apollo 13. Lovell stoically articulated the five-word message, "Houston, we have a problem," which quickly became a part of the American lexicon. The infamous problem was the explosion of the oxygen system inside the Apollo 13 spacecraft--a malfunction that seemingly doomed the NASA team.

Through teamwork and decisive leadership Lovell and his crew modified the lunar module into an effective lifeboat to safely return to Earth. As captain, he was instantly transformed into a national hero, and received the nation's most distinguished honors including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Captain Jim Lovell's inspirational story is a testament to the essential elements of heroism: a courageous spirit, quick and well-reasoned thinking, meticulous attention to every detail, and the spirit of teamwork that guided him and his crew safely back to Earth.

Tommies Under the Stars Observatory, Top Floor Anderson Parking Facility When Worlds Collide: Collisions Between Galaxies. This event will begin with an astronomy discussion and question and answer session, followed by an opportunity to tour St. Thomas’ state of the art observatory and, as weather permits, to view celestial object in the night sky. Space is limited to the first 100 registrants.

Enjoy a delicious buffet of grilled salmon, chicken picatta and sliced beef along with mashed potatoes, salads, and fresh fruit. Entertainment provided by UST student group Summit Singers following President Sullivan’s remarks. Tickets are limited and pre-registration is required. The College Art Gallery Collaborative (CAGC) invites students and families to this annual neighborhood gallery crawl. This free, family-friendly event features local art exhibitions and receptions at nearly a dozen college and university art galleries, bringing our community together in celebration of the visual arts. The Fall Art Tour is free but reservations are requested. Visitors will choose a starting school, stay with the group for the duration of the tour (usually six or seven of the galleries) and end at their starting school.

Twin Cities Marathon Summit Avenue Enjoy the annual Twin Cities Marathon, an annual local athletic event that has several components from 5 and 10K run to the Marathon that runs through a beautiful route taking in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. The Marathon begins at 8 a.m. near the former location of the HHH Metrodome - Mall of America Field in downtown Minneapolis and ends in St. Paul at the Minnesota State Capitol. Your family and friends can enjoy watching the runners on Summit from E. Mississippi River Boulevard to the St. Paul Cathedral. The best view will be at Summit and Cretin from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
