Closing 105 Years of Stuartholme with heart, hope and purpose As we bring our 105th year to a close, we are reminded that a Sacred Heart education is not measured simply in years, but by the lives it shapes. Our community has been formed over generations through people who have chosen to live with courage, with compassion and with a belief that education of the heart transforms the world. We stand in gratitude for this story, because we are part of it, and we are responsible for carrying it forward.

This milestone year has highlighted something profoundly simple about Stuartholme. The true strength of our school is found in the relationships that sustain us. We grow here because we are seen, we are known, and we are encouraged to flourish. This is why our community matters. Long before achievements, events or milestones, there is the daily work of encountering one another with dignity, generosity and purpose. It is in these encounters that the love of the Sacred Heart becomes real.

The Stuartholme legacy is not contained in buildings or records, but in the lives of young women who leave this place with integrity, confidence and conviction. They discover their voice, they ask thoughtful questions, they lift others up and they act with courage when it matters. They are shaped by the example of those who came before them, and in turn, they shape what our future will become.

This year, we have witnessed this legacy in the quiet influence of students who support one another with grace, in teachers who accompany with wisdom and in families who walk alongside us with trust and goodwill. We have seen it in our growing Junior School, in our commitment to excellence across learning and culture and in the many ways we have deepened our faith life as a community.

As we close the year, we return to the heart of our mission. A Sacred Heart education is not about perfection or polished outcomes. It is about forming young women who understand what it means to be human, to respond with heart and to make decisions that reflect integrity, hope and care for others. In essence, we want our graduates to step forward ‘seriously begun on a wide basis’.

As we step into a new year, we do so with hope for our students and the future. The world needs leaders of heart, thinkers of depth and young women who recognise that their education is not for themselves alone, but for the lives they are called to influence.

One of only 34 schools nationwide to receive this honour, the award celebrates our holistic approach to education and commitment to nurturing confident, capable young women. Nationally recognised for innovative practice, the teaching team nurtures curiosity, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. This collaborative environment empowers students to think critically, act compassionately, and lead with confidence.

The School’s unique blend of day and boarding education cultivates resilience, independence, and connection. Students benefit from personalised learning pathways, wellbeing programs, and leadership opportunities that encourage them to flourish. Initiatives such as the Wise Wellness curriculum and The Hive, where alumnae mentors provide peer-based academic support, reinforce Stuartholme’s student-centred approach.

Co-curricular opportunities are equally vibrant, with more than 88% of students involved in sport, the arts, enrichment, social justice, and special interest clubs. From rowing before dawn to performing in the actor’s ensemble or coding in the Robotics Club, these experiences foster exploration, growth, and leadership.

Stuartholme continues to lead with vision and heart, preparing young women to meet the future with compassion, confidence, and courage.

On Saturday 23 August, Stuartholme School marked a milestone moment with the Stuartholme Soirée Gala Ball, a spectacular celebration of 105 years of girls’ education. Held at the stunning Howard Smith Wharves Rivershed, the evening brought together our vibrant community of parents, alumnae, staff and special guests for a night filled with colour, laughter and connection.

We extend our gratitude to our Master of Ceremonies, alumna Danyelle Britz (Class of 1993) and Founder of Bloom PR Agency, for leading the evening with grace and energy.

Her presence added a personal touch that resonated with everyone in attendance.

On Thursday, 23 October, the Concert Hall at QPAC was alive with the spirit of Cor Unum as our community gathered for the 2025 Celebration of Excellence. This annual event honours student and community achievements across academic excellence, co-curricular, service, and the presentation of senior awards. Always a highlight in the calendar, this year’s celebration held special significance as we marked 105 years of Stuartholme School.

This milestone is a representation of the enduring heartbeat of a community that continues to live out the vision of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat with courage, compassion, and confidence. Excellence at Stuartholme has never been a destination. It is a shared journey, seen in every classroom, on every field and stage, and in the quiet moments where our community lifts one another up.

Deborah Lonsdale-Walker exemplifies strategic, compassionate leadership that places people at the heart of educational innovation. As Deputy Principal, she has driven initiatives that align whole-school objectives with the wellbeing of staff, students, and families, creating an environment where every member of the community feels supported and empowered.

Jane Morris has redefined what a contemporary boarding program can be. With decades of experience and a steadfast commitment to student wellbeing and academic achievement, Jane has created a nurturing home-away-from-home for students from across Queensland, Australia, and the world.

Among her most significant contributions is the implementation of the Wise Wellness Program and the promotion of self-managed learning, reshaping the traditional school day to embed wellbeing practices and encourage personal responsibility. Deborah has also led workforce innovation in response to national teacher shortages, introducing flexible arrangements such as job sharing and remote work. These strategies have re-engaged highly qualified teachers, supported staff wellbeing, and contributed to Stuartholme’s recognition as a 2024 5 Star Employer of Choice.

Her influence extends beyond the school gates. As the first female Chair of the Iona College Board since 2021, Deborah has played a pivotal role in shaping strategic direction and policy, demonstrating her impact on education at a sector-wide level.

Under her leadership, Stuartholme has seen a 275% increase in First Nations enrolments through partnerships with the Cape York Leaders Program and the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. Boarders achieve equally outstanding academic results, supported by programs like evening tutoring and learning plans that foster ownership and success.

Jane’s impact is deeply personal. Families from regional and remote communities speak of the reassurance and genuine connection they feel through her engagement – whether via regional tours, tailored wellbeing support, or the Parent Boarder Network. Beyond Stuartholme, Jane mentors emerging professionals through the Australian Boarding Schools Association, fostering leadership development within the sector.

Megan’s recognition highlights her transformative leadership in shaping contemporary learning for Stuartholme’s Junior School.

Since launching the program in 2024, she has driven bold, student-centred initiatives that redefine learning for Years 5 and 6.

Genevieve Rossi brings passion, innovation, and advocacy to early years education. Her commitment to equal access stems from her own experience as a student with a hearing impairment, inspiring her to ensure every child feels supported and empowered.

Her innovative co-teaching model in English and Mathematics enables flexible, differentiated grouping, ensuring every student receives tailored support and challenge. Through goal setting, assessment, and reflective practices, Megan empowers students to take ownership of their learning.

Genevieve’s academic and professional achievements are remarkable. A graduate of QUT, she served as lead author on research exploring integrated STEM pedagogies and robotics, and continues to contribute nationally as Education Director for Space Design Competitions Australia. In 2024, Genevieve became a founding teacher of Stuartholme’s Junior School, shaping its curriculum and culture with her expertise in STEM and studentcentred learning. Her work continues to inspire curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning in Stuartholme’s youngest students.

She has also advanced STEM and Technologies through projectbased learning, engaging students in robotics, coding, engineering design, and sustainability projects—fostering creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

5-star Innovative Schools FOR 2025

Stuartholme School has once again been recognised as one of Australia’s most forward-thinking educational institutions, earning a place on The Educator’s prestigious 5-Star Innovative Schools list for 2025. This marks the third consecutive year Stuartholme has received this accolade, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in contemporary girls’ education.

The award celebrates Stuartholme’s Junior School Curriculum Design, a pioneering approach launched in 2024 to transform learning for Years 5 and 6. Purpose-built to challenge traditional models, the Junior School combines cutting-edge pedagogy with flexible learning environments that foster collaboration, independence, and student agency.

Principal, Daniel Crump explains, “This recognition reflects our commitment to creating a future-focused, inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive. Our Junior School is built on a philosophy that empowers girls to become active, confident learners.”

The curriculum was inspired by a desire to make learning exciting and meaningful. At its heart is a co-teaching model in English and Mathematics, where two classes are taught by three teachers. This structure enables personalised learning through dynamic grouping,

allowing students to select from four differentiated levels based on readiness and goals. Instruction is delivered through the Campfire, Cave, and Watering Hole framework, which supports explicit teaching, independent processing, and peer collaboration.

Beyond core subjects, the curriculum embeds project-based learning across STEM, Humanities, and Technologies, with students engaging in robotics, app design, and sustainability challenges.

Wellbeing is equally prioritised through weekly lessons and initiatives such as “Tribe Work,” that teach collaboration and conflict resolution.

The impact of this innovative approach has been transformative.

Students have demonstrated significant academic growth, with PATMaths gains of 8.6 points, well above national benchmarks, and notable improvements in literacy. Engagement levels are equally impressive, with 85 percent of students reporting they feel happy and connected to their learning. Parents have strongly endorsed the program, praising its ability to boost confidence, independence, and enthusiasm.

Stuartholme’s Junior School has not only reshaped learning for its youngest students but has also influenced teaching practices across the school and beyond. Elements of the model have been shared nationally through conferences and mentoring, reinforcing Stuartholme’s role as a catalyst for educational transformation.

Learning in Action:

Stuartholme Junior School Showcases Education with Purpose At Stuartholme School, learning is designed to be purposeful, visible, and connected to the real world. This philosophy comes to life through the Junior School Learning Showcases, interactive events that celebrate student learning in engaging and authentic ways.

Led by Director of Junior School, Brendan Downes and curriculum design by Leader of Learning - Years 5 and 6, Megan Moffatt, the showcases were inspired by a desire to make learning exciting and meaningful. Students are encouraged to be active participants, not passive recipients of information. These events provide a genuine audience for student work, celebrate the process of learning, and shift the focus away from assessment. They also strengthen the partnership between school and home, offering families a deeper connection to their daughter’s educational journey.

Each showcase is designed to link directly to the curriculum while being elevated by a real-world context. Students might become travel agents in the Year 6 Travel Expo or sustainability advocates in the Year 5 Sustainability Summit. These roles allow them to apply knowledge creatively, think critically, and communicate confidently. The events also prompt meaningful conversations at home about learning, curiosity, and purpose.

Units are selected for their inquiry-based, hands-on nature and their potential for authentic audience interaction. The Year 6 Travel Expo explores Geography and Humanities through Australia’s connection to Asia. The Year 5 Sustainability Summit integrates English and Technologies. The Year 5 Science Fair focuses on light and scientific investigation. Each unit fosters creativity, problemsolving, and critical thinking — skills essential for lifelong learning.

Stuartholme’s inquiry-based pedagogy is grounded in the belief that learning should be active, relational, and purposeful. Each unit begins with a real-world question or problem that invites investigation and action. The showcase becomes the culminating event where students present their findings and engage in dialogue with an authentic audience. This approach supports the development of independent thinkers who are guided by curiosity and driven by purpose.

Our approach draws on constructivist theories of learning, particularly the work of John Dewey and Jerome Bruner, who emphasised learning through experience and reflection. It is also influenced by contemporary inquiry frameworks such as Kath Murdoch’s model, which prioritises student questioning and authentic action. Research around project-based learning and parent engagement in education also informs our work, highlighting

that when students see the relevance of their learning and when parents are actively engaged, motivation and achievement both increase. We are also inspired by John Hattie’s research on “Visible Learning,” particularly the importance of making learning goals clear, involving parents as partners, and providing authentic feedback opportunities. Project-based learning frameworks and inquiry pedagogy underpin our curriculum design, ensuring that students engage in meaningful tasks that develop both content knowledge and transferable skills.

The shared morning teas and lunches that follow each event reflect the strong sense of community that defines Stuartholme.

The Junior School Learning Showcases are a celebration of curiosity, creativity, and connection. They reflect Stuartholme’s commitment to purposeful education and highlight the transformative power of making learning visible.

Cape York leaders program CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP

In 2025, the Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP) celebrates 20 years of empowering young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through education. For over 15 of those years, Stuartholme School has proudly partnered with CYLP, welcoming students from Cape York into our boarding community and supporting them to thrive academically, socially and spiritually.

The partnership is grounded in shared values, believing in the power of education to transform lives, and a commitment to nurturing young people who will return to their communities as leaders, role models and changemakers. Stuartholme’s Sacred Heart mission of education and social justice aligns closely with CYLP’s vision of helping students take the best of both worlds, cultural knowledge and formal education, to build a future of opportunity for themselves and their communities.

Fiona Jose, CEO of Cape York Partnership, reflects on the significance of this work, sharing, “Providing our First Nations students the opportunity to gain high quality education beyond Cape York is a very unique opportunity, unfortunately only available to the lucky few. If youngsters stay in their community for secondary schooling they have a 1 in 100 chance of achieving Year 12 success. That is why orbiting from Cape York to places where good boarding school options are available is essential.”

The transition from remote communities to a metropolitan boarding school is significant. Many students arrive from schools with adjusted curriculums and may be navigating English as a second, third or even fourth language. They also carry the strength and complexity of walking between two worlds — balancing cultural identity with the expectations of a new environment.

Stuartholme supports this transition through a strong partnership with CYLP, which includes a pre-term residential camp, ongoing mentoring, and the presence of Indigenous Support Officers who help students navigate both school life and cultural responsibilities. The school’s own Indigenous Support Officer, Tessa Bulsey (Class of 2015) — a CYLP alumna and Stuartholme graduate — brings lived experience and leadership to her role, offering guidance, advocacy and care to the next generation of students. Academic support is tailored to meet students’ individual needs. Stuartholme staff work closely with First Nations students to ensure they have access to the tools, pathways and encouragement they need to succeed — whether that’s through ATAR, TAFE, vocational studies or work experience. Co-curricular involvement is equally supported, with students participating in everything from sport and art to music and leadership programs.

Stuartholme’s commitment to First Nations education is also reflected in its broader actions which are guided by the Schools Reconciliation Action Plan and has recently appointed a dedicated Indigenous Support Officer, further demonstrating its commitment to learning, listening and walking in partnership with First Nations communities.

What makes this partnership truly meaningful is the sense of belonging and mutual respect that has grown over time. Generations of sisters, cousins and aunties have passed through the school, creating a living legacy of connection. The school community is honoured to be welcomed into these families and communities, and to be part of their daughters’ journeys.

We congratulate Cape York Leaders Program for 20 years, and celebrate the strength, resilience and brilliance of the young women who have walked through our gates, and the communities that continue to shape them.

While students from Cape York travel south to learn at Stuartholme, many of our Year 10 students also have the opportunity to travel north to learn on Country, through the school’s partnership with Red Earth.

At Stuartholme, the Red Earth Immersion Program offers students a rare and powerful opportunity to step outside the classroom and into Country — to walk alongside First Nations communities, to listen deeply, and to learn through experience.

DEAR DIARY In 2025, students on the Red Earth Immersion shared daily reflections with their families through a digital journal, offering insights into their experiences and deepening the connection between home and country.

There are many ways to learn about First Nations culture, through books, museums or guided tours, but it is something entirely different to be welcomed on Country. To walk where ancestors walked, to sit with Elders, and to hear stories passed down through generations is a privilege that leaves a lasting impression.

“We were met by welcoming families… and were nervous for the smoking ceremony, which were of course unfounded.

The Red Earth experience is not about observation. It is about immersion. Students are invited into community life, participating in cultural practices, language lessons, and everyday routines. They learn the importance of stillness and presence — a concept known in some First Nations languages as dadirri, meaning deep listening and mindfulness.

“We stopped by natural bush medicines such as green ants… and were shown beautiful ancient cave artwork. An interesting part of these artworks was the story behind the medicine man… there was a rather nice equality in the sense that women too could learn to be medicine men.”

The partnership with Red Earth has also created deeply personal connections. In one recent immersion, students stayed with the great-grandparents of Year 8 student, Harley in Maraka, outside Hope Vale. They lived, walked and learned on the land Harley calls home, seeing her way of life through the eyes of her matriarch. It is in these moments that the heart of the partnership is revealed — mutual respect, curiosity and love.

The Red Earth immersion is a deeply humbling and grounding experience. It invites students to slow down, to reflect, and to connect with the land, with others, and with themselves.

Sports Excellence Breakfast One of the highlights for our sporting community was Stuartholme’s inaugural Sports Excellence Breakfast, held on Friday 10 October. This special event brought together athletes, coaches, families, and supporters to celebrate the dedication, teamwork, and outstanding achievements across our sporting program.

We were honoured to welcome Ariarne Titmus as our guest speaker. A dual Olympic Gold Medallist, World Champion, and World Record Holder, Ariarne captivated the audience with stories from her inspiring journey as an elite swimmer. She spoke candidly about the resilience required to compete at the highest level and how she balanced training, competition, and life beyond the pool.

Her message to our students was clear: • Embrace your nerves as a superpower. Nerves are a sign that your body is ready to perform.

• Injuries can be an opportunity for growth and personal development, allowing you time to focus on the 1% that you may normally miss.

• Self confidence is important. When she lined up for a race, she told herself it was her competitors’ job to beat her, not the other way around. She also wrote pages of positive affirmations every day throughout her major competitions.

The Edwina Howard Sports Award Stuartholme sport is built on strong values, including commitment, teamwork, and integrity.

The Edwina Howard Sports Award was established in 1989 to honour these principles, recognising students who demonstrate outstanding dedication to sport, strive for excellence, and embody true sportsmanship over at least three years of representing the school.

“Sometimes it’s not the girl who achieves the highest standard,” reflects Edwina Howard, whose name the award proudly bears.

“It’s the one who commits to all aspects of Stuartholme Sport across individual and team sports, shows dedication, leads the spirit circle or finds opportunities like umpiring.” For Edwina, the award was never just about winning; it was about acknowledging the girls who show up, give their best, and contribute to the sporting community in every way — whether as players, umpires, or coaches.

Edwina’s own story reflects the spirit of the award. During her years at Stuartholme, she competed in swimming, athletics, cross country, and netball, often filling in wherever needed. Her versatility taught her that fitness and resilience transcend individual sports: “Your time is your time… swimmers and runners can carry fitness across sports.”

Edwina’s message to the next generation is simple: “Have fun. Do any sport and every sport. If you want to stay with one, just stay with one. But don’t take life too seriously — be open to challenges.”

From her own career journey, which spans Nursing, Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Sales, Marketing, and Government Procurement — shows the value of adaptability and lifelong learning. “You’ve got to be able to adapt quickly… it’s not a race to the top. Diversify your skills and keep moving forward.”

This year, the award was presented to Paige van Gelder, a student who exemplifies the spirit of the Edwina Howard Sports Award through her dedication, versatility, and sportsmanship.

After school, Edwina continued swimming until health challenges forced her to pivot. She embraced netball and sailing, later supporting her children’s sporting pursuits — two of whom now compete at national level. Her lifelong connection to sport shaped her belief that participation should be fun, inclusive, and a foundation for lifelong wellbeing.

Paige reflects, “Receiving the Edwina Howard Award feels like a genuine recognition from the Stuartholme community of the effort, dedication, and time I’ve put into contributing to sport at Stuartholme. Throughout my years here, I’ve always tried to immerse myself in the community, support others, and uphold the values that make Stuartholme such a special place.”

When Edwina was a student, sport was limited to a few options. Today, Stuartholme displays a thriving program with pathways for athletes, coaches, and officials. Alumnae return as coaches, and students explore roles beyond playing, such as umpiring and mentoring.

For Edwina and the recipients before Paige, the award represents more than a trophy; it is a symbol of opportunity, resilience, and the joy of sport.

“It doesn’t end at the gate,” Edwina says. Sport now opens doors to

Stuartholme Netball: A Record-Breaking Season of Growth, Grit and Greatness

2025 was an extraordinary year for Stuartholme Netball — a season marked by record participation, exciting milestones, and a vibrant sense of community on and off the court.

With 311 players across 33 Downey Park Club teams and 27 students representing three CaSSSA teams, participation soared to an all-time high. In total, 338 students — an impressive 41% of the entire school population — pulled on the red and yellow dress this season, making netball the largest and most widely represented sport at Stuartholme.

On the court, our teams delivered outstanding performances across every level of competition, culminating in seven premierships and two runner-up finishes. These results are a testament to the players’ hard work, discipline, and unwavering team spirit. Adding to the celebrations, Stuartholme proudly received the prestigious Sue Maskell Spirit Award, recognising our passionate and supportive fans throughout the finals series — a powerful reminder that showing up for one another matters just as much as the scoreboard.

Our strength extended beyond the court, too. This year saw 46 student umpires officiating throughout the season, supported by eight experienced umpire mentors. Nine of these students proudly achieved their Downey Park Junior Badge, and one attained a National C-Badge accreditation — remarkable milestones in their officiating journeys. Under the leadership of Umpire Coordinator and 2024 alumna Stella Berge, the umpiring program continued to uphold the highest standards of excellence, sportsmanship, and respect. Stella’s contribution was recognised at the Association level, where she was named a finalist for the President’s Award and a joint recipient of the Joan Pentecost Award, celebrating her dedication to the umpiring community.

To cap off an exceptional Downey Park season, Stuartholme recorded the highest per capita participation of any school in the Association. This achievement reflects not only the program’s growth but also the inclusive and supportive community that continues to thrive within Stuartholme Netball.

Among the many highlights of the season, one of the proudest moments came when our Shield Championship Vicki Wilson team progressed beyond the Met West regional round for the first time in Stuartholme history, earning a place at the Vicki Wilson State Championships and ultimately finishing 18th in Queensland. For a team made up largely of Year 8 students, their achievement signals a bright future for the program’s next generation.

As we reflect on this record-breaking year, we celebrate not only the victories but also the friendships forged, the confidence gained, and the pride of wearing the Stuartholme colours. With this year setting a new benchmark, the future of Stuartholme Netball looks brighter than ever.

Charli Woodard

In Stuartholme’s 105th year, Charli (Class of 2025) has lived out the spirit of Cor Unum with quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and a deep commitment to community. As Cor Unum Captain for 2025, she has led not through volume or visibility, but through consistency, dedication and genuine care. “I’m hoping that in the future, when people remember the 2025 Cor Unum Captain,” she says, “they think of someone who showed that leadership isn’t always about being the loudest voice or the best in the class. It’s about kindness, inclusivity, and being true.”

Charli’s leadership has been shaped by the Sacred Heart tradition. She speaks often of the wisdom of Madeleine Sophie Barat and the Sacred Heart Goals, which remind students who they are becoming matters just as much as what they do. Her words echo the heart of this year’s theme, All For Her — a call to live with awareness, compassion and purpose. “It’s one thing to see what’s happening in the world,” she reflects, “but it’s another to care enough to do something about it.”

Her journey at Stuartholme has been a long-held dream. With sisters and cousins who wore the blue dress before her, Charli grew up knowing the strength of the community she would one day join. “Becoming Cor Unum Captain is something I’ll cherish forever,” she says. “It means more than words can say.”

That sense of belonging has shaped her understanding of leadership. “The best leaders stay true to themselves,” she says. “Being authentic is contagious and creates a community where everyone feels free to be themselves.” Charli has helped foster a culture where students look out for one another, where kindness is a daily practice, and where every girl feels seen and supported.

She describes being a Stuartholme girl as someone who notices when others need help, who reaches out, and who lifts others up. “There’s a real sense of care that flows through the school,” she says. “We don’t just pass each other by; we take the time to ask how someone’s going, to listen, and to offer support.”

As Charli prepares to graduate, she leaves behind a legacy defined not by perfection, but by presence. Her journey has been shaped by moments of courage, compassion, and quiet strength — the kind that shows up even when things feel uncertain. “Strength isn’t measured by how perfectly we glide through life,” she says, “but by how bravely we keep walking when the ground feels unsteady.”

She reminds younger students that failure is not something to fear, but something to embrace. “It’s kind of the whole point,” she reflects. “Failure teaches you how to succeed. It’s how you grow, how you learn, and how you figure yourself out.”

Charli’s message to those still walking the Stuartholme journey is simple, “be the one”. Be the one who lifts others, who chooses kindness, who dares to be authentic. “You’ll find your place,” she says, “not by changing who you are, but by daring to be exactly that.”

In this milestone year, Charli has truly been the heart of Stuartholme — a leader who lived All For Her, who inspired others to lead with love, and who reminded us all that the Sacred Heart is not just a tradition, but a way of being.

SHAPING HISTORY:

Erin Longbottom (Class of 1994)

Praised by her peers as possessing “intellectual rigour, an outstanding work ethic, a strategic mind, respect and empathy”, the Honourable Justice Erin Longbottom (Class of 1994), has been welcomed into the Federal Court of Australia — Appointed on 5 December 2024 and sworn in 20 December 2024 before a Welcome Ceremony in February this year.

The appointment of the mother and stepmother of six was welldeserved after playing a prominent role in some of the most significant Commissions of Inquiry in our nation’s recent history — including the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide (DVSRC) and the Australian Capital Territory Board of Inquiry on the Criminal Justice System (Lehrmann Inquiry).

Yet, when I spoke with Her Honour who had just returned to her office from a busy day in Court on a Friday afternoon, she remained humble. “It is a tremendous honour to be appointed,” she said.

Before going to the Bench, Her Honour was appointed a Queens Counsel in 2019. A year later, Her Honour was appearing in the High Court, stand in for the Solicitor General of Queensland1. In 2023 she was Counsel Assisting on the Lehrmann Inquiry. Her opening statement, which was live streamed, was described as “a masterclass in clarity, [and] succinctness”2.

Later in the DVSRC she had to examine the Chief of Army, Chief of Navy, Chief of Airforce, and the Defence Secretary all in a twoweek period. By the time she got to the Chief of Defence Force, Angus Campbell AO DSC, he made a public apology, admitting that not enough had been done for veterans when it came to suicide prevention.3

Beside these high-profile matters, Her Honour was an expert in Native Title, appearing for both the Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments and Indigenous applicants. She had “roughed it” in remote locations when the Court sat in Borroloola, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Woorabinda. Her Honour was remembered by those she was for and against as being friendly, fair but formidable. In one trial a witness refused to return after lunch to be further cross examined by Her Honour. When ordered to come back to Court the witness withdrew from the case.

Where does this alumna attribute her success to? “Stuartholme played an important part” her Honour says. “Just look at the alumnae who have managed to carve out a successful career in the law, including barristers Marjorie Daley, Sarah Holland (both Class of 1994) and Dr Pip Coore (Class of 2006) not to mention the Honourable Patsy Wolfe AO (Class of 1961), the first woman appointed Chief Judge of the District Court of Queensland, and the Honourable Mary Finn (Class of 1963) formerly of the Family Court of Australia”.

“I received enormous encouragement at Stuartholme” Justice Longbottom says. “Its teachers, including Mrs Andrew, Madame Vial, Ms Parer, Mr Spence, Mr Turnbull, Mr Elliot and Ms Bedford made a lasting impression.” “The ethos of The School was very much that there is no single blueprint for success. We were supported to work hard and pursue our individual interests, whatever they might be.”

“My sister, Alix Armstrong (Class of 1997) is another example of that. Alix followed a completely different path, studying medicine.

She is now a very successful GP in Brisbane.”

“I also had the benefit of being a boarder.” Her Honour outlined.

“Boarding enriches not only the lives of the boarders in the opportunities it presents but also the friendships you get to experience with girls from very different backgrounds. Those friendships that I formed at Stuartholme, most notably with Marj Daley and Siobhan Greathead, remain incredibly important to me today.”

I received enormous encouragement at Stuartholme.

Queensland, Cate Heyworth-Smith KC and the President of the Queensland Law Society, Genevieve Dee. Her Honour observes that circumstance was “entirely uncontrived but a lovely sign of how times have changed.”

When not working, her Honour likes to spend time with her husband Joe Crowley (son of Patricia Scanlan (Class of 1963), children and friends, exercise (which she said is vital for her mental health) and indulge in her love of art, fashion and travel (sometimes in combination like visiting Australian designer Martin Grant’s atelier in Paris).

Given the fact that Federal Court judges are not required to retire until the age of 70 — Her Honour has decades ahead of her to continue to make positive impact in our community.

PRESERVING HISTORY:

dr Jane Wilson AO FAICDLife (Class of 1975)

For decades I’ve driven past Lamb House, the grand federation-style home that sits in the commanding position atop Kangaroo Point cliffs … I’ve been intrigued by what’s beyond the mysterious iron gates and wondered what it would be like to walk through the large grounds and step foot inside that magnificent home with wrap-around verandas that look out across Brisbane city …

I was so very lucky to be warmly invited inside by owner and fellow alumna Dr Jane Wilson AO. It was like walking into a story I’d envisioned for years. It’s everything you can imagine and more. It’s grand, with soaring ceilings and intricate woodwork. You can’t help but wonder ‘if only these walls could talk’. And Jane, well, she is so generous, welcoming and kind ... a scholar, so passionate about architecture and art.

It was serendipitous that we would be sitting down together in a property that was built in 1902-1903, discussing history and architecture in the year that our school is celebrating 105 years.

Long before Jane became one of the state’s most respected identities in the medical, finance, banking and commercial technology sectors, as well as the custodian of a portfolio of historic properties, Jane was a spirited Stuartholme girl with a sharp mind, a love of science, and a curiosity that would take her far beyond the gates at Mt Coot-tha.

Jane’s journey from Stuartholme to the lecture halls of Harvard and executive boardrooms beyond is anything but conventional. Her story is one of curiosity, courage, and a deep belief that anything is possible — a mindset she credits, in part, to her formative years at Stuartholme.

From a young age, Jane was drawn to science. “I knew I wanted to do science,” she recalls. Encouraged and inspired by Sister Spruson, Jane excelled academically, earning top marks in physics and paving the way for medical studies. She also considered studying veterinary science and dentistry.

Jane, who travelled to school each day on the #84 bus from Fig Tree Pockett, also enjoyed tennis — under the coaching of the late, great Trevor Fancutt. Jane then realised her passion for art — acknowledging Dr Norman Behan’s collection which once hung on the walls at Stuartholme and was later relocated to UQ where Jane would study medicine from 1976-1981.

Following UQ, Jane began her clinical years at Greenslopes Repatriation General (Teaching) Hospital where, as a young doctor at age just 23 or 24 years, her instinct to innovate was clear: she organised monthly lunches for medical staff, brought people together, and looked for ways to make systems more efficient — It was no surprise that she was acknowledged with the ‘Intern of the Year’ award.

A trip overseas with friends then opened Jane’s eyes to broader horizons. While on a ski lift, she got to talking with English MBA students and had a “light bulb moment.” She then found herself living in London, working in Harley Street, and vying for a place at Harvard. “There were 21,000 applicants, and just 800 spots.”

Her time at Harvard was transformative. She embraced business education with the same intellectual curiosity she had for science — combining her medical background with strategic vision and becoming the first doctor and second Australian woman to graduate from Harvard with an MBA. Jane returned to Brisbane and married husband Steve Wilson AM FAICD in the Stuartholme chapel. They had five children and poured their shared love of architecture and design into restoring significant historical buildings — including their beautiful family home in Highgate Hill (also an AB Wilson design — just like Lamb

House) as well as the iconic Princess Theatre in Woolloongabba to name a few.

Jane has also served on more than 40 boards and has recently retired from: Costa Group Ltd, the Australian Advisory Board on Technology and Healthcare Competitiveness, Transurban Ltd and Sonic Healthcare Ltd. Jane is currently a Director of Rugby Australia and Oceania Rugby — proudly wearing her Wallabies’ jacket and scarf for our chat … “It’s a privilege to be in a place where you can help,” she said. “I can’t wait until my grandchildren start to play rugby.”

She is also the owner of Barambah Wines and has seen her phenomenal success recognised — being listed in the inaugural Australian Financial Review Top 100 ‘Women of Influence’ and receiving the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ prestigious Gold Medal.

Jane’s extraordinary achievements are matched by her grace, warmth and wit!

When we were finishing up, I couldn’t help but ask if she ever used the old lift at Stuartholme? “Well, yes,” she said. “But I never got caught!”.

I so enjoyed meeting Jane. She has embraced change without fear, boldly followed her curiosity across continents, and yet remained deeply connected to community. “You can do anything,” she said.

“Dream big — and then do it.”

What a woman!

Driving out past those tall gates I reflected … Lamb House is perched so proudly over the Brisbane River and so sits Stuartholme — high on the hills of Toowong. Both historical buildings are linked by timeless architecture and commanding views. One nurtured families, the other generations of young women, yet together they cherish the past while looking to the future.

Stuartholme School was honoured to host the 2025 Sacred Heart Conference, welcoming educators, leaders and students from Sacred Heart schools across the Asia-Pacific region. This year’s theme, Igniting Hearts: Moving Beyond Neutrality with Social Awareness and Action, invited participants into the heart of Sacred Heart education and challenged us to lead with courage, compassion and purpose.

Delegates travelled from across the ANZNet network, including Baradene College in New Zealand, Kincoppal-Rose Bay in Sydney, Sacré Cœur in Melbourne and Sophia Education Ministries, along with international guests from Sacred Heart schools throughout Asia. Over two days, the conference provided a treasured opportunity to pause and reflect, to learn from one another and to explore how the Goals of Sacred Heart Education continue to shape our shared mission in diverse school communities.

Principal, Daniel Crump captured the spirit of the event sharing, “Gatherings like this are more than professional development. They are a moment to reconnect with our shared mission and to consider how we lead with courage and purpose in the face of challenge, complexity and injustice.”

Student Stream: Turning Awareness into Action The Student Stream focused on the Sacred Heart Goal of Social Awareness that Impels to Action under the theme Come with a problem, leave with a plan. Students were encouraged to identify a social issue relevant to their own school context and devise an actionable plan they could implement.

Using the design thinking process, groups worked through stages of empathise, define, ideate and action planning to develop practical solutions. Collaboration was central.

Students worked in mixed-school teams, sharing ideas on inclusion, sustainability and wellbeing. This exchange sparked new approaches and strengthened connections across the Sacred Heart network, showing the power of collective action.

The program included a pre-conference workshop to define issues and prepare students, conference workshops to collaborate and create plans, and post-conference check-in workshops scheduled for early 2026 to review progress and share outcomes.

The experience promoted student voice, leadership and social action while deepening understanding of the Sacred Heart Goals. Stuartholme’s student delegates also demonstrated hospitality and leadership by hosting visiting students throughout the event.

Inspiring Keynotes and Alumnae Voices The conference featured keynote presentations from Sacred Heart alumnae and distinguished guests, including Juanita Wheeler (Class of 1992), founder of Full & Frank and expert in strategic advocacy; Fr Frank Brennan SJ AO, renowned human rights lawyer and Jesuit priest; Jason Barry-Smith, celebrated opera performer and educator; and Danielle Leedie Gray (Class of 2005), proud Bidjara and Wakka Wakka artist.

A standout moment was the Alumnae in Action panel, hosted by Deputy Dean of Boarding and Leader of Social Justice Claire Lawler and facilitated by students Grace Goey (Year 12) and Charlotte McCosker (Year 11). The panel featured alumna, Emma Barry (Class of 2021), Anna-Louise Kassulke (Class of 1982), Nicola Bone (Class of 1999, founder of Sound Off for Schools) and Katherine Gough (Class of 2007). Together, they shared reflections on social justice, the importance of hope and the power of young people finding and using their voice. Grace and Charlotte were widely commended for their thoughtful and confident facilitation.

Educator Workshops Across a range of workshops and presentations, educators explored practical approaches to leading social awareness and inspiring action in their school communities. Topics included ethical leadership, cultural identity and belonging, youth empowerment and faith in action. These sessions provided tools and strategies to embed the Sacred Heart Goals in meaningful ways.

A Shared Mission for the Future The 2025 Sacred Heart Conference was a powerful expression of unity and shared purpose. It celebrated the enduring legacy of Sacred Heart education and reignited a collective commitment to forming hearts and minds for a more just, compassionate and hopefilled world.

Unity CELEBRATING THE UNIQUE INTEGRATION OF DAY AND BOARDING LIFE AT STUARTHOLME

Stuartholme has been a Boarding School for 105 years, beginning its journey in 1920 as a home for girls. While it began as a boarding-only school, Stuartholme has since evolved to welcome day students from across Brisbane and surrounding areas. Today, the integration of boarders and day students creates a vibrant, inclusive environment where friendships flourish across postcodes, time zones, and life experiences. It is a unity that strengthens the heart of the school.

From the moment boarders arrive, they are embraced by a community that extends beyond the dormitories. One of the most beautiful expressions of this connection is the way day families wrap around boarding students with genuine care. Whether it is baking birthday cakes for girls far from home, offering lifts to weekend sport, or opening their homes on the weekends, day parents play a vital role in helping boarders feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger.

“It’s such a simple act, but for a girl celebrating her first birthday away from home, it means everything,” says Dean of Boarding, Jane Morris. “To be surrounded by friends, candles glowing, and a cake made with love, that’s where belonging begins.”

This sense of belonging is mutual. Boarders bring a richness to the school culture that is both grounding and inspiring. They offer perspectives shaped by rural, remote, and international experiences. Their resilience, independence, and drive are quietly woven into the fabric of daily life at Stuartholme.

“There’s a particular determination in our boarders,” Jane reflects. “They’ve seen hardship, they know the value of hard work, and they bring that energy into everything they do.”

For day students, these friendships offer perspective.

station or joining boarders on a trip to Goondiwindi, day girls gain a deeper appreciation for the diversity of life beyond the city. These shared experiences foster empathy, broaden horizons, and create bonds that last well beyond graduation.

Academically, the boarding environment also fosters a culture of collaboration and peer support.

With structured routines, access to tutors, and a natural rhythm of shared study, boarders often become informal mentors and sounding boards for one another. “People don’t always realise how academically strong our boarders are,” Jane notes.

“They’re incredibly collaborative and often help each other refine ideas, review assessments, and stay motivated.”

But perhaps the most powerful impact of boarding at Stuartholme is the way it shapes the entire community. It teaches everyone, boarders and day students alike, that home is not just a place, but a feeling. It is found in shared laughter, in late-night conversations, in the quiet support of a friend who understands. It is in the way students learn to care for one another, to listen, and to grow together.

In a world that often feels divided, the unity of home and school at Stuartholme is something truly special. It is a reminder that when we open our hearts to one another, we create a community where everyone belongs.

THE CLASS OF 2025 BOARDERS On Tuesday, 18 November, Stuartholme School’s boarding community gathered to farewell the class of 2025 Boarders. This annual tradition is a celebration of the remarkable young women who have shaped the spirit of our boarding house and left an indelible mark on our community.

At the heart of Stuartholme lies the boarding house, a place of laughter, learning, friendship and resilience.

Within these walls, stories have been shared around tables, challenges overcome with courage, and milestones celebrated that will be cherished for a lifetime.

One of the evening’s most poignant moments came when Eve Tully reflected on their shared journey: “I’ve been a boarder at Stuartholme for six years, and tonight, when I look at all of you, I don’t see the scared, homesick little Grade 7s we once were. I see strong, brave, independent young women, women who will go on and do incredible things. You’ve all lived the words of Matthew: ‘Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds.’ And that light, your kindness, your courage, your love for each other, has shone brighter than you will ever know. You’ve been there for each other in ways that matter, in ways that stay with you forever — the hugs when someone needed it most, the late-night talks, the comfort when words weren’t enough. You’ve given each other what the world sometimes forgets to give: care, understanding, and the certainty that we are never truly alone.”

As these young women step into the next chapter of their lives, they carry with them not only memories but the enduring bonds of friendship and the values that will guide them wherever they go. The class of 2025 Boarders have truly let their light shine, and in doing so, they have illuminated the path for those who follow.

In the Corner Store Year 9 Boarders Learn Life Beyond the Gates

Tucked into a cosy corner of the Year 9 dorm, a small but mighty enterprise is teaching Stuartholme’s boarders lessons that extend far beyond the classroom. In the Corner Store is a student-run shop, providing them with hands-on financial literacy designed to equip students with real-world skills, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of value and responsibility.

Launched as a boarding initiative, the store was created to address a common challenge for adolescents — understanding the value of money. “Often, young people have a lot of needs and wants, but don’t always grasp the financial imperatives behind them,” explains Deputy Dean of Boarding, Claire Lawler. “We wanted to create something that would bring the girls together, teach them how money works, and build soft skills they can take into the workforce.”

Each Year 9 student plays a role in the store’s operations, from ordering stock and managing inventory to pricing, using the EFTPOS machine, and balancing the till. The girls were given a $250 startup fund, with the goal of repaying it within three months.

From there, profits are divided into three parts — reinvestment into stock, a cohort activity or outing, and a donation to a charity of their choice.

The store’s name, In the Corner Store, was chosen by the students themselves. It reflects both its physical location and the nostalgic feeling of a local corner shop. “It’s the little things,” Claire says.

“They run it two afternoons a week, but it’s become a hub where girls from all year levels come together.”

Beyond the financial lessons, the initiative is fostering leadership, collaboration, and generosity. The Year 9s are now preparing to train the Year 8s, ensuring the store continues as a legacy of learning and giving. “They’re learning how to rotate stock, how to avoid waste, and how to make decisions that benefit others,” Claire shares. “One girl even said she now has a real appreciation for how her parents’ grocery shop.”

In the Corner Store is a shining example of how Stuartholme’s boarding program nurtures independence, empathy, and practical life skills. It is not just about running a shop. It is about preparing young women to step confidently beyond the gates of Stuartholme, equipped with the knowledge, experience, and heart to make a difference.

STUARTHOLME ELEVATES THE ARTS WITH

opera Queensland Collaboration Stuartholme School proudly announced a new partnership with Opera Queensland, officially launched in May at the Festival of Opera in the Outback. This exciting collaboration brings together one of Queensland’s most dynamic cultural institutions and Brisbane’s only Catholic Girls’ Boarding School to support a shared commitment in artistic excellence, creative learning and cultural enrichment.

The partnership positioned Stuartholme as a key event partner for this year’s Festival of Opera and later welcomed Opera Queensland performers to the school for workshops and performances. These experiences gave students a rare opportunity to engage directly with world-class artists and explore the magic of live performance.

Leader of Learning, The Arts, Ms Lucy Harkin, shared her excitement: “This is an incredible opportunity for our students to learn directly from practising professionals in the arts industry. First-hand experiences like these are invaluable for inspiring creativity, building confidence and opening students’ minds to future pathways in the performing arts.”

SENIOR ARTS STUDENTS The creativity and depth of our Senior Arts students also shone brightly in the newly refurbished Theatre. Year 12 Drama students delivered a gripping, contemporary adaptation of Euripides’ Medea.

Entirely devised by the class using Contemporary and Physical Theatre techniques, the performance explored raw emotion and moral complexity, challenging audiences to consider how far we are willing to go in the pursuit of justice and what we sacrifice along the way.

Alongside drama, the annual Senior Art Show celebrated the extraordinary talent of our visual artists.

From intricate paintings to bold mixed-media works, the exhibition showcased individuality and imagination, reinforcing the vital role of The Arts in shaping confident, expressive young women.

From opera to original theatre, gallery walls to music studios, The Arts at Stuartholme continues to flourish. These experiences nurture not only artistic skills but also resilience, collaboration and critical thinking, qualities that prepare our students to shape the world with courage and creativity.

Already, students in Years 5–8 have enjoyed a lively introduction to opera through The Adventures of Figaro, presented by Opera Queensland and directed by the multi-award-winning team at Shake and Stir. This energetic and humorous production follows the spirited Figaro as he helps Count Almaviva find the courage to tell Rosina that her singing voice is the best thing since singing began.

The performance brought laughter and learning to the stage, sparking curiosity and joy.

Alumnae Erskine Stuart Recognition Award 2025 Recipient Patricia Ferrier (Class of 1972) At the 2025 Celebration of Excellence, Stuartholme School proudly announced Patricia Ferrier (Class of 1972) as the recipient of the Alumnae Erskine Stuart Recognition Award. This honour celebrates Patricia’s exceptional contributions to youth empowerment, social justice, and community leadership across Queensland.

Patricia’s life and work reflect Stuartholme’s Sacred Heart Goal for 2025, A Social Awareness that Impels to Action. Her commitment to justice and inclusion demonstrates the courage, compassion, and confidence that lie at the heart of this goal.

With nearly four decades of service in the environment and community sectors, Patricia has become a respected advocate and leader. Her career spans town planning, environmental activism, youth advocacy, and community development, always guided by a deep commitment to equity and the common good. She has held influential roles within the Youth Affairs Network of Queensland and led the Deception Bay Neighbourhood Centre for 14 years, strengthening its impact on social and economic disadvantage.

Reflecting on her journey, Patricia credits Stuartholme for shaping her confidence and values. “I trace my passion for social justice and the environment directly to my education at Stuartholme,” she shared. Her work is deeply spiritual, grounded in love and service, and inspired by the Sacred Heart tradition. Patricia describes her advocacy as an expression of “Revolutionary Love,” caring beyond one’s own circle and working for the common good.

Stuartholme congratulates Patricia Ferrier on this well-deserved recognition and celebrates her lifelong dedication to justice, inclusion, and transformative leadership.

Senior Alumnae lunch FRIDAY 19 SEPTEMBER Stuartholme School was delighted to welcome past students from the graduating classes of 1980 and earlier to the annual Senior Alumnae Lunch. This cherished tradition offers alumnae the opportunity to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate the deep bonds formed through a Sacred Heart education and the lasting legacy of Stuartholme’s alumnae.

Guests began the day with stand-up canapés served on the Pink Balcony before moving to the dining room for a beautifully prepared lunch, catered by Kester and the team at Connective Cuisine.

We thank all who attended and look forward to welcoming our senior alumnae back again next year.

With an estimated $30 trillion set to change hands globally by 2030, the “Great Wealth Transfer” is not only a financial milestone, but also a cultural one. Increasingly, women are using their growing influence and assets to give generously, strategically, and with deep social conscience.
