IT TAKES HEART TO CHANGE THE WORLD

This year’s focus goal as a school has been a deep respect for intellectual values. Our Cor Unum Committee challenged us with their theme to reflect this goal through Open Mind, Open Heart, to Play Our Part.

Recently, at the Valedictory celebration, I offered a story to the departing Class of 2023 that reflects this theme, highlighting the great heart it takes to change the world.

She stood on the summit of the highest mountain in the world. She was away from her homeland, Japan, and it was a very different time. Her name was Junko Tabei. She was the first female to reach the summit of Mount Everest successfully.

What I love about her story is that she made it much easier for other young women, like our Stuartholme students, to succeed in their field. It would be fair to say that she opened doors for female climbers worldwide and made it her passion to make a difference in the lives of others, going on to do great missionary work as well.

Junko’s personal narrative is innately Sacred Heart. Whilst she wanted to achieve her best and scale to the heights of the tallest summit in the world, what was central to her calling was to pave the way for others to achieve. That is what drove her passion, and that in itself takes heart to change the world. It would be safe to say that in the moment atop Mount Everest she may not have realised the beacon of hope and light she would become, for so many across the world.

OPENING OUR HEARTS At Stuartholme, we are blessed to be nestled in our mountain’s safety and protection, and our unique community reminds us of our encounter and relationships with our faith and, indeed, God. We are a community united in Christ atop our mountain, buoyed in the knowledge that we grow with a deep sense of fulfilment and joy when we operate in harmony and unity. Our Sacred Heart values enflame our community as we have opened our hearts and minds throughout the year to play our part, just like Junko Tabei.

As I said to our Class of 2023, having the courage and confidence to seize the spotlight in your endeavours and to make a difference in the world takes heart. It is not work to be taken lightly, and it is not easy work. However, it is what the Gospel and an education of the Sacred Heart call us to do. To not shy away from male-dominated fields like mountain climbing, to seek out ways to ensure that other young women who follow can succeed and open doors for others to ensure they, too, are able to show great heart.

CHILDREN OF THE SACRED HEART As a community, we are all children of the Sacred Heart, and my blessing is that our community continues to move forward with the courage and confidence St. Madeleine Sophie Barat was renowned for, continuing to open our hearts and minds to the story of Christ’s love, leading with great heart.

Shaping History STUARTHOLME SCHOOL BREAKS GROUND ON THE JUNIOR SCHOOL PRECINCT In a historic moment that signals a transformative chapter in Stuartholme School’s rich legacy, the Stuartholme Board, Leadership Team, and students have officially initiated the construction of a dedicated Junior School precinct.

Nestled within the school’s expansive 21 hectares on the foothills of Mount Coot-tha, this contemporary project is set to redefine the educational landscape, marking a milestone in Stuartholme’s 103-year history.

Principal Daniel Crump, beaming with pride, emphasised the significance of this development, stating, “As a leader in girls’ education, Stuartholme understands that the early years of education provide the foundation for successful and life-long learners, who will make a global impact beyond the gates of the school.”

The project involves the introduction of Year 5 in 2024 and Year 6 in 2025, ensuring a seamless progression into the Secondary School.

Mr Crump envisions a safe, caring and warm environment, where students can understand who they are, how they belong and learn, and can achieve educational excellence.

Educational specialists have meticulously designed the Junior School precinct to optimise educational achievements and foster active learning. Classrooms will be intentionally crafted to facilitate collaborative learning, with the aim of enhancing students’ selfreliance and independence, valuable qualities as they progress into secondary school.

The Junior School students will enjoy access to a range of the school’s existing facilities, including the swimming pool, netball and tennis courts, Library, Technologies Precinct and Art studios. The strategic vision ensures that the Junior School maintains a small size, accommodating 100 students across two-year level cohorts while providing extensive opportunities to learn and grow.

Chaplain Sr Rita Carroll, whose association with the school dates back to 1957, expressed the sentiment that this innovation will enrich the school’s sense of history. She believes that embracing the youngest students into the culture of belonging, aligns with the school’s Sacred Heart charism.

The approval of the Master Infrastructure Development (MID) marks the commencement of various exciting projects outlined in the school’s Master Plan 2020+.

The Stuartholme community, in unity, is embarking on an exciting journey to build a brighter future for its students and set the stage for a transformative era in the school’s history, enhancing opportunities for accessibility to a Stuartholme Sacred Heart education.

Embracing Excellence In the dynamic landscape of education, Stuartholme School has emerged as a thriving ecosystem fostering overall excellence. While the school has garnered prestigious awards this year, it is the comprehensive commitment to innovation, collaboration, and sustainability that truly sets Stuartholme apart.

Principal Daniel Crump’s visionary leadership has been a cornerstone of Stuartholme’s success, acknowledged as an Excellence Awardee for The Educator’s ‘Prime Super Principal of the Year – Non-Government’ Award and has been listed on The Educator 5-Star Innovative Schools 2023 List. Under the key initiatives, Stuartholme has introduced a Drone program, empowering young women with real-world skills in drone technology and industry partnerships to tackle agricultural challenges. Stuartholme School has partnered with technology industry leaders to launch a drone (RPAS) technology program for young women. This program equips students with practical skills in drone operation, navigation, and safety checks, increasing the representation of women in this emerging field.

Beyond the awards, Mr Crump’s leadership has steered the school towards transformative initiatives that transcend the conventional boundaries of education. His guidance has cultivated an environment where students don’t just learn; they thrive.

Deputy Principal Deborah Lonsdale-Walker also embodies this vision, as she has been named on The Educator Hot List, a recognition of educational leaders making significant contributions to advancing innovation in the education industry. Her dedication to student wellbeing and her commitment to reshaping traditional school structures have earned her this well-deserved recognition.

Stuartholme’s Boarding House, under the leadership of Dean of Boarding, Jane Morris, was recognised as an Excellence Awardee for The Educators’ ‘Boarding School of the Year’ Award. This acknowledgment reflected the successful implementation of a wellbeing approach that prioritises connection, placing it at the forefront of the boarding experience. Ms Morris, along with the dedicated Boarding House team, tirelessly endeavours to celebrate successes, offer unwavering support during challenges, and cultivate a community that embodies the spirit of Cor Unum – translating to ‘One Heart.’

In our commitment to shaping students for their future endeavours, we actively guide them in embracing sustainable practices for a better, more sustainable future. Led by Tom Lillyman, Stuartholme’s Careers Counsellor, and in collaboration with the dedicated Urban Farming Committee, the initiatives include the establishment of raised garden vegetable beds, implementation of solar-powered aquaponics systems, and the development of smart gardens powered by the Internet of Things. These initiatives have not only significantly contributed to the school’s sustainability efforts but have also earned recognition on The Educator’s 5 Star Sustainable Programs 2023 List.

Stuartholme continues to lead the way in education, it stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through visionary leadership, collaborative efforts, and a steadfast commitment to excellence.

Celebration of Excellence On Wednesday 18 November, the Stuartholme community gathered at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre for the Celebration of Excellence.

As a community, we celebrated the diverse victories of our students, but we also emphasised the message that excellence can manifest in various ways, often arising from the shadows of setbacks.

within the Stuartholme community, along with the dedication of teaching and professional staff, were recognised as crucial elements contributing to the success of our students.

“In evenings where we celebrate success and excellence, it’s often easy just to simply concentrate on the result. However, that is just the tip of the iceberg. Tonight is about acknowledging and celebrating the significant journey that occurs in the pursuit of excellence,” says Mr Daniel Crump.

We took a moment to honour outgoing Board Chair, Ms Helen Spain, for her instrumental role in shaping the direction of Stuartholme.

Ms Spain left Stuartholme students with an invaluable lesson of staying true to oneself and embracing the twists and turns that life will throw at you. Each student has a crowd cheering them on wherever they may go.

Highlighting the communal effort required for such achievements, Mr Crump praised Stuartholme learners for understanding that the educational journey is a community effort and that an individual can not accomplish this alone. The interconnectedness and relationships

Meet the Teachers DRIVING EXCELLENCE IN THEIR CLASSROOMS In 2023, we have continued to feature strongly in the national media focus on Australia’s Best Teachers. We continue to celebrate the recognition of our teachers and the contribution they make in the lives of young people.

BEN WEBB: Leader of Learning – Languages Ben’s educational journey began with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Chinese & Japanese, followed by a Diploma of Education. From his first teaching experience in 1994, Ben discovered a genuine enjoyment in teaching languages, a sentiment that has persisted throughout his nearly 30-year career.

A core principle guiding Ben’s teaching philosophy is encapsulated in his belief that “teaching is all about teaching to the student and not to the subject.” This studentcentric approach underscores his dedication to making language education a personalised and engaging experience for each individual.

When asked about his most effective teaching methods, Ben emphasises the power of music, specifically singing. Drawing on almost three decades of language teaching, he notes that linking language to movement and song aids in long-term memory retention.

His innovative approach involves crafting Mandarin lessons into parodies of popular songs, covering a diverse range of artists from ABBA to Harry Styles.

The incorporation of the ‘Nutbush’ dance as a language-learning tool further showcases Ben’s inventive approach. While initially deemed “dreaded” by students, the Nutbush has proven to be a surprisingly effective method for reinforcing complex sentence structures. Ben’s gratitude to Tina Turner for this approach adds a touch of humour to his teaching style.

He advises his students to approach language learning with love, emphasising that effective communication transcends grammatical correctness. This sentiment echoes throughout his teaching career, where the joy of learning and the love for the language are evident in every song, dance, and cultural exploration shared with his students.

FIONA DAY: Leader of Learning – HPE Fiona’s journey into teaching was inspired by her innate desire to assist others during her school years. She recalls, “I just remember being the student who would assist others. I guess my skill was translating whatever we were learning into a language that somebody who was struggling could understand. I enjoyed being able to help others.”

This inclination towards aiding fellow students became the foundation of her passion for teaching.

Fiona’s area of teaching reflects her background as a physically active child with a keen interest in health and the human body. She states, “I was a physically active kid with a keen interest in Health and the human body; it seemed like an obvious fit at the time.” This alignment of personal interest with subject matter contributed to her dedication to these areas.

In her teaching approach, Fiona emphasises the importance of engaging and responding to the needs of her students. She notes, “The most effective teaching methods are the ones that respond to the needs of my audience. Engagement is the key to learning.” Expressing her belief in the power of energy and passion, Fiona highlights, “I find the most effective strategy is energy and passion. You need to have an energy that motivates your students and a passion for whatever it is you are wanting them to engage with.”

Fiona’s advice to her students revolves around personal growth and resilience. She encourages them to “train their weaknesses,” adopting a training metaphor to inspire growth and improvement. Additionally, she advocates for embracing discomfort as a path to resilience and mental fitness.

Motivated by a strong dedication to students’ wellbeing, Fiona pursued a Master’s in Education – Guidance Counselling.

For her, teaching is more than a profession; it’s a vocation centred on helping students reach their full potential.

Reflecting on the challenges some students face due to various factors and life experiences, Fiona felt compelled to do more beyond the classroom. This realisation led her to study Guidance Counselling, providing her with a compassionate lens to meet individuals where they are on any given day.

BIRGIT HOLLEY: Mathematics Teacher Birgit Holley’s journey into becoming a Mathematics teacher was fuelled by a deep love for Mathematics and a passion to instil that same love in students across all levels. Viewing education as a tool for empowerment, Birgit aims to equip her students with the knowledge and skills needed to emerge from school as well-rounded young adults.

In her role, Birgit employs diverse teaching methods and strategies tailored to the specific subject matter, grade level, and individual needs of her students. She has found that fostering critical thinking through thought-provoking questions stimulates engaging discussions, prompting students to analyse, evaluate, and synthesise information.

A core piece of advice Birgit imparts to her students revolves around the idea that their aptitudes are not fixed. Emphasising the transformative power of effort and hard work, she encourages students to believe in their ability to advance their mathematical skills through dedication and perseverance, highlighting the mantra that practice is key to improvement in a subject like Mathematics.

Reflecting on her teaching career at Stuartholme, Birgit finds immense satisfaction when her enthusiasm for Mathematics sparks a similar passion in her students.

Witnessing the transmission of her love for the subject and experiencing the “aha” moments of understanding in her students brings a profound sense of accomplishment and joy, underscoring the rewarding nature of her teaching journey.

TIM BUTLER: Science and Digital Technologies Teacher Tim Butler’s journey into teaching was sparked by a reflection on his most enjoyable experiences, including volunteerteaching refugees, developing resources for Indigenous communities, and tutoring at The University of Queensland.

Recognising the significant impact teachers can have, Tim, driven by his personal passion for Science and Technology, chose to become a High School teacher. His diverse experiences, ranging from teaching Years 7 to 10 Science and Digital Technologies to Senior Physics, reflect his belief in the essential skills these subjects offer for thriving in today’s digital world and exploring the universe through fundamental laws, instilling critical thinking abilities.

In Tim’s teaching approach, he values creating an accepting and safe environment where students feel confident to ask questions, make errors without judgment, and engage in interactive discussions. Acknowledging that different students respond well to varied strategies, Tim emphasises the importance of fostering a space where all students can actively participate. His advice to students centres on cultivating a curious mindset, encouraging them to question everything, maintain an open-minded attitude, and embrace life’s challenges.

Throughout his teaching career at Stuartholme, Tim has experienced numerous memorable and rewarding moments. Witnessing students grasp complex concepts, particularly in programming languages, and observing their excitement and appreciation for the complexity of the subject matter brings him fulfillment. Serving as the Acting Leader of Learning – Science in the second half of 2023, Tim found reward in leading dedicated teams of colleagues and supporting students and parents, fostering a positive and enriching educational environment.

The Arts At Stuartholme, our Arts program encompasses Drama, Music, and Visual Art, providing a dynamic platform for students to unleash their creativity and gain real-world experiences.

Visual Art flourishes at Stuartholme as students draw inspiration from both local and international artists. In 2023, projects included collaborative murals, skateboard designs, film-based dioramas, and self-portrait paintings. These creations were prominently featured at Art Exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing students’ diverse and innovative expressions.

The Drama Club at Stuartholme offers a unique platform for students to express themselves through captivating theatrical performances.

For the 10th consecutive year, the Drama Club partnered with Queensland Theatre’s Scene Project, dedicating themselves to ‘A Thousand Point from Zero,’ a play by the award-winning playwright Steve Pirie. This real-world experience immersed Stuartholme students in a professional production schedule, allowing them to work closely with industry professionals such as Tom Yaxley from Queensland Theatre.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF MUSIC:

Stuartholme’s Symphony of Growth At Stuartholme School, music is an integral part of our students’ development, wellbeing, and success for Years 5 to 12. The Stuartholme music program, guided by dedicated instructors and supported by scientific research, has evolved into a symphony of growth and connection.

Senior lecturer Dr Leah Coutts from the Queensland Conservatorium emphasises the importance of collective music-making in fostering a sense of belonging and resilience. Dr Leah explains that Music facilitates a sense of community and unity by triggering the release of oxytocin and dopamine, ultimately improving brain health, boosting self-esteem, or providing someone with a sense of purpose.

Stuartholme School Principal Mr Crump, a dedicated musician, highlights “At Stuartholme, arts and music education are fundamental to who we are as a Sacred Heart school. As a core part of our curriculum, our students unlock their potential through arts experiences that allow them to have a deeper understanding of themselves and how they fit in an ever changing and dynamic world. The rich offerings of music and arts at Stuartholme provides a platform for our students to thrive well beyond the gates of the school.

As a passionate arts and music educator myself, the arts are crucial to our humanity and cultural literacy in contributing to future thinking societies that make an impact.”

Stuartholme’s music program, commencing in Year 5, takes students on a journey by exposing them to diverse instruments, progressing to a comprehensive understanding of being a practising musician

by Year 12.

From Year 7 to Year 12, the program focuses on exploring and understanding the practical aspects of being a musician. It contributes to academic outcomes and personal growth, showcasing the universal appeal and benefits of music for all students.

Director of Music, Andrew Mear and a member of the Stuartholme community for 15 years shares “The program fosters a supportive community, encouraging our younger cohorts to connect with students up to Year 12 when involved in extra-curricular ensemble and choir opportunities”.

Students who would like a more tailored lesson for their specific music talent or prefer a one-on-one setting have the opportunity for private studio lessons providing an environment for each individual to practise their musical skills in a safe and nurturing space. Students have the opportunity to use these platforms as an outlet away from their academic studies or can advance further in

their musical careers with external assessments available.

Stuartholme’s mission-driven music program integrates singing in masses, liturgies, the annual Choral Competition, and community events to engage all students and the broader community. This inclusive approach fosters participation, aligning with the program’s overarching goals.

In the words of Billy Joel, “I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”

The journey of music at Stuartholme and beyond echoes this sentiment, creating a pathway to personal growth, self-esteem, and a strong sense of community for all our students.

ENTERED STUARTHOLME: YEAR 7 Entering boarding can be scary but it’s an experience that will stay with you forever, wherever you go. Stress is inevitable, whether it’s about schoolwork, missing home or what you’re going to wear to the Marist social next week.

But how to overcome it is what really matters. I find taking your mind off things that cause you stress really helps, spending time with friends, calling family or having some downtime. Also getting involved with clubs, sports and music co-curricular activities can help keep you busy.

What would I tell my younger Boarding sister?

Unique to Brisbane, Stuartholme is the only Catholic Boarding School for girls in Years 7 to 12, offering a quality Sacred Heart education.

Within the heritage-listed buildings, Stuartholme Boarding creates a sisterhood, bringing together over 120 boarders from rural and regional areas across Australia and overseas.

ENTERED STUARTHOLME: YEAR 10 I’d tell my younger sister a few things as she starts boarding school. First and foremost, I’d say, “Have a blast because these will be some of the best years of your life.” I’d encourage her to grab every opportunity Stuartholme throws her way since you never know where it might lead.

From my own time in boarding, I can tell you, there’s never a dull moment; it’s an absolute rollercoaster of fun and adventure. Boarding is hands down one of the coolest experiences you’ll ever have!

ENTERED STUARTHOLME: YEAR 7 I would encourage my younger sister to wholeheartedly embrace the multitude of opportunities available in boarding! The boarding house is like a tightly-knit sisterhood, where everyone is constantly filled with enthusiasm and support for various house activities, such as the Anzac Cup, recreational events, and countless others. Actively participating has not only enabled me to forge strong connections with peers across different grade levels but has also made my time at Stu exceptionally enjoyable and immensely fulfilling.

ENTERED STUARTHOLME: YEAR 7 My journey at Stuartholme has been a mix of valuable life lessons and memorable moments. When it comes to managing stress, I’ve learned that taking a break and setting aside stressors is crucial. Embracing opportunities at Stuartholme has been a personal mantra – I actively participate in whatever comes my way. Boarding wasn’t easy for me initially, with homesickness taking its toll, but I eventually found my place in this special community. As for funny memories, there have been so many, it’s like a movie waiting to happen. Late-night games, including the legendary ‘YEET,’ have given us some of the funniest moments that we’ll cherish forever.

ENTERED STUARTHOLME: YEAR 9 Going into your first year of boarding is daunting, no matter what grade you have come into. It’s an entirely new adventure with its own set of challenges and joys. The most significant piece of advice I can offer to any new boarders is to dive into any activity or opportunity that comes your way. You’ll discover that finding your place becomes much more accessible this way. As you settle in, you’ll find that late-night gatherings (much to the supervisors’ dismay) become a regular occurrence, and you’ll grow closer to your new friends, that you will soon call family.

ENTERED STUARTHOLME: YEAR 7 As you get ready for boarding, I want to share some advice with you.

Firstly, remember that homesickness is a feeling that won’t last forever.

To keep your mind off it, get involved in lots of sports. Time will fly by, so make the most of every opportunity. Join recreation events, spend time outdoors, and cherish moments with your friends.

One small but important thing – make your bed daily and keep your room tidy; it makes a big difference. I was scared when I started in Year 7, but I wish someone had told me how much fun it would be. You’ll make lifelong friends, enjoy delicious food prepared by the best chefs in Brisbane, and time will zoom by. So, embrace it, because it goes by way too quickly!”

SUMMER 2023 Sport at Stuartholme has seen a significant increase in student participation in 2023.

We are seeing more students involved in a variety of different sports, allowing each individual to thrive in an environment that values participation, hard work and determination both on and off the field. A significant milestone for Stuartholme Sport was the win of three CaSSSA Championships in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics this year and an outstanding number of students competing on a regional, national and international level.

DID YOU KNOW? Since 2017, Stuartholme School has consistently opened doors for students to explore international opportunities through rowing scholarships in the United States. Despite the interruptions caused by COVID-19, the school has remained steadfast in creating pathways for its students.

One notable success story is that of Phoebe Robinson, a Stuartholme Alumna (Class of 2018) and accomplished rower. Securing a scholarship at Syracuse University in the USA in 2019, Phoebe returned after a year abroad to make her mark in the competitive world of Australian rowing.

In 2023, Phoebe Robinson has undeniably left her mark on the international stage. In a whirlwind year, she competed in the Under23 World Championships in Bulgaria, clinching an impressive 3rd place.

Her journey continued at the ‘Head of Shanghai’ competition in China, where she secured 1st place in both the 4.5km race and the 500m sprint. Phoebe’s global victories did not end there, as she emerged as the winner of the World Beach Sprint in Italy a few months later.

Looking ahead, Phoebe has recently been offered a scholarship to attend Texas University to complete her master’s degree and to row for Texas Rowing. She will continue to pave her way to future Olympic dreams during her time studying and rowing abroad.

As we celebrate Phoebe’s remarkable achievements, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and our respect for the dedicated journey she has reached thus far. In contemplating the future of rowing at Stuartholme School, we encourage younger generations to envision the boundless possibilities that lie both on and off the water.

Beyond the strokes and races, rowing offers a journey of personal growth, global exposure, and the chance to carve a unique path— a legacy exemplified by Phoebe.

ROWING LEGACIES “ Being a current rower and knowing how ‘Stu Rowing’ was established, makes me strive harder to continue the legacy within our family.” OLIVIA TOTTEN Sam Totten (née Cunningham) Class of 1993 & Olivia Totten Current Year 10 Student WHAT POSITION DID/DO YOU BOTH SIT IN THE BOAT? SAM: Initially 3 seat, then eventually bow.

OLIVIA: Stroke.

WHY WERE/ARE YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT ROWING? SAM: At school we were a tight-knit group of friends. Two of our friends had brothers who rowed, and we all agreed it would be fun to give it a go. Then the passion just grew … Ask any rower, it’s a sport that demands so much of you both physically and mentally, but once you start, it’s hard to stop.

Nowadays, I’m still passionate about rowing because of what it gave me, and hope that my daughters (and son) get to experience the same sense of camaraderie that comes with being part of the rowing community.

OLIVIA: I started rowing in Year 7 when I attended the ‘Learn to row’ event and since then being a part of Stuartholme rowing has been like being part of a big family.

WHAT ARE THE MEMORIES THAT YOU CLEARLY RECALL? ARE YOU STILL IN TOUCH WITH YOUR ROWING TEAM MATES? SAM: I remember preparing for our first regatta…. wondering what we’d gotten ourselves into? We really didn’t appreciate the time and effort involved in getting a crew to the start line. All the other girls’ schools had sophisticated set ups: multiple slick crews, Head Coaches, large parent groups and fancy branded school gazebos. We turned up in a boat loaned to us from Duchesne College, wearing our ‘Stu’ bike pants and singlet (Stu ‘zooties’ were definitely not ‘a thing’ back then), we had just seven parents to pitch an “Old El Paso” tent, and a couple of dedicated school friends waving red and yellow balloons! After placing a respectable 4th, the result gave us the confidence to keep going. It was an incredible opening season for us beginners. I vividly remember how excited and happy we were after winning our first regatta! It may not have been the ‘Head of the River’, but we were Stuartholme’s founding rowing crew, in a borrowed boat and we had won our first regatta!

More than 32 years after hopping in that boat, our founding crew of four still catch up regularly. We’ve attended each other’s weddings, we’re godparents to each other’s children, we’ve cried together at the loss of a parent and we’ve celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and every milestone in between. Watching my own teenage daughter row now for Stuartholme, I’ve come to realise how lucky I was as a 15 year old girl to be a part of a crew where we always had each other’s back – on the water and land, as we navigated the ups and downs and emotional turmoil of high school together. I hope that Olivia can one day say the same thing about her time as a Stuartholme rower.

DESCRIBE WHAT ROWING IS LIKE NOW COMPARED TO HOW MUM TELLS YOU IT WAS BACK IN THE 90’S? OLIVIA: I can picture it to be very different. I’ve seen photos and Mum has told me stories about how rowing used to be run at school in the early 90’s. It has developed since then but I think the community and passion for the sport has remained the same. Mum never got the opportunity to ‘scull’, they just got taught how to row ‘sweep’ straight away and the same four girls only ever competed in a ‘four’ boat - never an ‘eight’. We have many more opportunities now when it comes to boats and skills but the basic rowing technique remains the same.

We also now row our regattas out at Wyaralong Dam, whereas mum had to contest with the City Cats & the whitewash they would create in the Brisbane River! I think that would have been much more difficult.

HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING A ROWER TODAY / KNOWING THAT YOUR PROUD MUM WAS PART OF THE FOUNDING TEAM? OLIVIA: Rowing in a program that my mum and her friends founded and continuing a passion that she had makes me happy.

Mum hasn’t lost her love of rowing. She always volunteers at the shed. I like having her around.

DO YOU BOTH SHARE A PASSION FOR ROWING / DO YOU TALK ABOUT RACES/ TACTICS TOGETHER? Sam: I love debriefing with Olivia about how her ergos and scull trials went, and hearing about race plans. I also try hard to just be the ‘Mum’ without giving too much advice – I leave that to the awesome coaches in the rowing program! I also realise that times have changed – we never had scull trials, and I’m quite sure my ergo times would not be considered impressive under any circumstances nowadays. Back then, our race plans were simply to get across the line first, making sure we navigated the wash from the ferries that would cruise up the Milton Reach on a Saturday despite the BSRA regattas that were taking place.

OLIVIA: When it comes to trials and races I can tell Mum how things went and know that she will have a decent idea of what I’m talking about. One of the good things about mum is that she doesn’t try and tell me what to do or how I should have done something better, she just listens to what I tell her and supports me with the passion that she still has today. And now that my brother is rowing and Dad also comes along to the regattas we can all share in the passion that mum created and continue that as a family.

Past meets Present – Year 5 2024 In the early years of the 20th century, as the Australian bush sprawled endlessly, education for children in remote areas posed a significant challenge. Stuartholme, a beacon of knowledge and growth, emerged as a solution, welcoming its first six students in 1920.

A perusal of the School Register reveals a unique demographic – the young students, aged 15, 14, 11, 10, 8, and 7, all embarked on their educational journey in the primary classes. Remarkably, they were all boarders, hailing from the vast expanse of country properties.

In an era where resources for home education were scarce, the boarding school became the sole avenue for these young minds.

Their educational odyssey ranged from nine years for a few, to completing Year 8 for others. Leaving school after primary education was customary for many girls, either to assist at home or seek employment.

Despite the limited documentation about the younger students, the archives unveil a treasure trove of photos, capturing moments of their school life. In the 1920s, resources were illustrated through charts, reflecting a bygone era. As “children of the Australian bush”, billy teas and bush excursions became cherished holiday traditions, offering a glimpse into the simplicity of their lives.

The School’s humble beginnings are traced to a cottage where classes commenced, and boarders lived in a cottage along the main drive.

Building delays were common, a testament to the challenges faced in the early years. However, the Sisters, attuned to the needs of families, opened Stuartholme’s doors to boys as day scholars for a brief period. Despite being far from home, boarders forged lasting connections with the Sisters and the School, fostering an enduring relationship through the Alumnae Association.

The landscape of Stuartholme underwent transformations, especially in the 1970s when the Catholic Education Office intervened.

Responding to the Archbishop’s call to strengthen local Parish Schools, independent Catholic schools, including Stuartholme, relinquished their Primary Schools.

Fast forward to the present, Stuartholme is reclaiming its roots by reopening its Junior School. Guided by the spirit of Madeleine Sophie and the ethos of Sacred Heart Education, the curriculum reflects a commitment to “strong studies,” inviting younger students to rejoin the Stuartholme family.

As Stuartholme embarks on this new chapter, the echoes of its history resonate—a testament to resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to education that transcends time. The spirit of Cor Unum, the heart that beats as one, welcomes a new generation into the fold, ensuring that Stuartholme’s legacy continues to flourish.

In the academic realm, Year 5 and Year 6 students will be immersed in a variety of subjects. Core subjects such as English, Maths, Religious Education and Science will be taught by dedicated Junior School teachers. Complementing these, specialist teachers from the Secondary School will cover a diverse range of subjects including Art, Chinese, Digital Technologies, Drama, French, Health and Physical Education and Music.

Recognising the importance of seamless transitions, we embody this commitment through the intentional pairing of Year 5 students with Year 9 “big sisters.” This purposeful matching not only ensures a smooth transition but also cultivates positive relationships that endure across the school years. Engaging in sporting events and the potential involvement in Senior-led clubs offer invaluable insights and skills.

Integral to our approach is the Wellness Program, inspired by the evidence-based UR Strong program and anchored in our Sacred Heart Charism. This program focuses on instilling resilience and empathy, comprising five key elements:

Red Earth Immersion Red Earth Immersion is provided to Year 10 students who would like to immerse themselves in the Indigenous culture.

Through a safe and meaningful way, the program is designed to maximise the time spent on Country with Elders and Traditional Owners, sharing generational stories and traditions.

We asked three students and one staff member who ventured to these homelands, to answer three questions: • What insights or lessons did you gain from your trip, and how have they influenced you since returning?

• Can you share a memorable experience from your trip that left a lasting impact on you?

• What challenged you during the experience and how did you overcome this?

During my time at Panamuunji and Biiba-Garr, I learned that even though different communities are closely situated, they are markedly distinct. Each community possesses its own cultures and stories that we had the privilege of experiencing and sharing. Since returning to Brisbane, I constantly listen for opportunities to share my experiences and to learn more about the First Nations People.

At Biiba-Garr, I formed a strong connection with Garry, the Traditional Owner of the homeland. We spent two hours in conversation, delving into his life as a Vet in the Far North Queensland region. I was captivated by the stories he shared and as the sun set, we concluded our conversation with a discussion about the footy. I engaged in conversation with Des, Estelle, Kaylene, and Garry about their lives on country. These conversations will always remain with me; Kaylene expressed her love for the area.

I would say that being with a large group 90% of the time drained my social battery on some days, and I needed moments to myself.

Nevertheless, pushing through until the end was undoubtedly worthwhile, as I couldn’t have envisioned embarking on this trip with a more welcoming group of girls. This shared experience, encompassing both highs and lows, is something all of us can cherish, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

Elizabeth Wilkinson (Year 10) During Red Earth, we learned numerous lessons and insights. At the two homelands we visited, Panamuunji and Biiba-Garr, the Traditional Owners welcomed us with open arms. Each Traditional Owner generously shared stories about their land, waters, and culture. They each had different stories about their lives to share. A lesson that has stuck with me since returning is one of the stories shared by Elaine, a traditional owner from Panamuunji. She left us with this piece of advice: “sometimes, we have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone to reach our goals”. This lesson continues to influence me since my return, serving as a reminder that pushing beyond our comfort zone is necessary to try new things and achieve our goals.

A memorable experience was on our last full day of Red Earth, we boarded a boat to The Great Barrier Reef, engaging in snorkelling and learning about sea life from members of the local Indigenous groups. We learned the names of local sea life in their language and weapons used by their ancestors to hunt the sea life. We also had the opportunity to explore the reef independently, taking in sea life that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Having never snorkelled before, this experience was exceptionally memorable for me.

A challenge I faced during Red Earth was adjusting to a lifestyle so different from my life at home. We had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a different culture and try various new things.

Many aspects of Red Earth required us to acclimate – from staying in a completely different environment to adapting to the absence of the facilities we had at home. We also had the chance to try new activities, such as cooking damper for the first time, tasting local foods, or creating art with the local Indigenous groups. While it was initially challenging to adapt to these new experiences, we supported each other, ultimately overcoming the challenges.

During Red Earth, we learned numerous lessons and insights.

From the Red Earth Immersion, I learned about the significance of community. During our visits to the two homelands, the traditional owners welcomed us warmly, creating a comfortable atmosphere from the moment we arrived. Despite the small size of the communities at both homelands, their closeness was palpable, and during our visit, we seamlessly became part of their community. Meeting Nanny Pearl and Nanny Grace, relatives of the traditional owners, who immediately insisted we call them Nanny, was a sweet experience. We cherished our time with them, learning valuable lessons. Since returning, I’ve made a conscious effort to be kind to everyone and have developed a deeper appreciation for the value of community.

A particularly memorable experience from the trip was bidding farewell to the traditional owners, Tim and Elaine. Their heartfelt goodbyes, marked by hugs, made the moment feel incredibly special. It resonated as if we were one big family, creating an experience I know we will all remember.

One of the challenges I faced during the trip was homesickness.

However, the efforts of Paris and Jamie, the camp instructors, along with Miss Claire and Miss Chloe, made everyone feel at home.

Throughout the trip, we all felt like a big family, providing a comforting atmosphere that helped me overcome the challenges associated with missing home.

Laura McGann (Year 10) I learned that while many Indigenous communities share similarities, each is unique. It was enriching to delve into the distinct history and cultures of each homeland we visited. Departing Far North Queensland, I made a personal commitment to remain curious and open to learning about the ongoing richness and diversity of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage in Australia.

During our stay on Traditional Owner Tim and Elaine’s homeland of Panamuunji, Tim guided us to the creek adjacent to his dwelling. In the serene company of just Tim, us, and the beautiful nature surrounding us, we were immersed in a lesson about the creek’s significance to his family and people. With no distractions from the outside world, we had the time and space to play, enjoy, and appreciate our surroundings. At that moment, I believe our group fully grasped the special relationship and connection that indigenous communities have with the land.

Being away from the comforts of ‘home’ affected everyone at some point during the trip. However, reflecting on it now, many of us express the desire to go back. The experience, the lessons learned, and the time spent on Traditional Land clearly outweighed any discomfort felt for a brief period. This experience is something that will stay with us for a long time to come.

As a community of the Sacred Heart, we acknowledge the traditional owners of the land we live and learn on, Meanjin.

We pay our respects to the Elders, past, present, and emerging, and recognise their continuing connection and contribution to this land.

In 2023, we embarked on a journey of reconciliation by introducing our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), a formal and purposeful framework outlining our school’s dedication to recognising and valuing the profound contributions of First Nations culture and history.

Our journey is one of continuous growth and learning. In 2023, we began this voyage with our community by fostering an environment where open dialogue, education, and cultural exchange flourish. Through initiatives embedded in our RAP, we aim to create spaces for meaningful conversations, educational opportunities, and celebrations that honour and embrace the rich tapestry of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

As we navigate the path towards reconciliation, 2023 marked the beginning of a chapter where our actions align with our aspirations, and our commitment to fostering a more inclusive, understanding, and respectful community came to life. The journey is ongoing, and together, we stride forward with purpose, guided by the values of the Sacred Heart community and the principles embedded in our Reconciliation Action Plan.

The 2023 Valedictorian, Charlotte Spooner, passionately urged her peers to carry the invaluable gift of appreciating life’s smaller moments into their futures. She emphasised the transformative power of

modest actions, inspiring meaningful change. As the Class of 2023 embarks on new chapters, they stand ready to make a lasting impact by embodying humility, simplicity, and the joy of uplifting others.

The anticipation grows to witness the profound contributions they will make as they transition into Stuartholme School Alumnae.

In the words of Dr Seuss, “You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” Stuartholme graduates are not just setting out on a journey; they are embarking on a path where their learned wisdom and compassionate spirit will guide them towards impactful destinations.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNAE PRESIDENT The Stuartholme Sacré Coeur Association (SSCA) has had a wonderful year connecting with new and old alumnae through a range of events throughout the year.

We hosted the third annual International Women’s Day Breakfast in March, the Cocktail Party in May, and the Feast of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat Alumnae Mass and Morning Tea also in May, alongside the 2023 SSCA Annual General Meeting. We thanked the outgoing committee members for their time and efforts supporting the SSCA and welcomed our new committee members. Special thanks goes to our outgoing President, Georgina Woods; she leaves a lasting impact, especially in my eyes, and will be a hard act to follow. Thank you, Georgie.

The remainder of 2023 saw us celebrate with the Senior Alumnae Lunch in September, an annual calendar event with our alumnae of 65+ years showcasing the strength in the sisterhood and an everlasting connection with Stuartholme. We celebrated our community over a beautiful lunch in the Australian Room.

In October, we came together to remember those who are no longer with us but remain part of our hearts.

We hosted the Remembrance Mass in honour of those who have passed and included them in the SSCA’s book of remembrance. Special thanks to Fr. Gerry from the Jubilee Catholic Parish, who celebrated mass with us, alongside the Religious of the Sacred Heart who also joined us.

Adelaide McDonald (SSCA’s Vice President) and I were invited and hosted at QPAC for the Celebration of Excellence, where we were honoured to present this year’s 2023 Erskine Alumnae Recognition Award to Anna-Louise Kassulke, graduating in 1982. Well done, Anna, for your outstanding career and legacy as a Stuartholme Alumna. We were also honoured to present the Cor Unum Shield, which is the School’s highest award for leadership and general excellence. Congratulations to Chloe Carew. By far, the highlight of the evening was when the girls sang “Coeur de Jesu”; the spirit was felt by everyone in the QPAC concert hall!

Our final event for the year was the Stuartholme School Class of 2023 Valedictory Mass. These girls are now part of the newest alumnae, and we couldn’t be prouder of this special milestone in your lives. The outgoing Class of 2023 received a bracelet each, something that will always be a reminder of their connection to Stuartholme.

THE JOURNEY OF ALUMNA KATRINA SCHILLER (CLASS OF 1990) IN FILM MUSIC EXCELLENCE From a small town to global prominence, the trajectory of Katrina Schiller, a 1990 graduate of Stuartholme School, in the realms of film music editing and composition is nothing short of extraordinary.

Katrina’s love for music began at home in Clothiers Creek, near Murwillumbah in NSW. The piano, a constant companion in her childhood, set the stage for a lifelong devotion to musical expression.

At Stuartholme, under the guidance of music educator Carol Parker, Katrina’s passion for music found fertile ground.

Reflecting on her time at Stuartholme, Katrina fondly recalls Mrs Parker’s influence. “She had a way of supporting and guiding us to do our best creatively,” says Katrina. Mrs Parker’s composition assignments and captivating vocal choir selections fuelled Katrina’s musical curiosity and set her on a trajectory that continues to shape her career today.

After graduating from Stuartholme, Katrina pursued her studies at the Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey. Her career took her from Sydney to London, and now she resides in the heart of the entertainment industry, Los Angeles.

As a Film Music Editor and Music Composer, Katrina has lent her talent to Academy, Golden-Globe, and BAFTA award-winning films.

Collaborating with a diverse group of filmmakers, composers, and musicians, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the musical landscape of cinematic masterpieces.

Katrina’s current work in London, spanning five months this year, exemplifies the dynamic nature of her profession. Her days are far from typical, starting at 9 am and often concluding well after 10 pm.

Whether collaborating with directors and editors to establish the

musical tone of a scene, assisting composers in crafting film scores, or overseeing recording sessions with orchestras, Katrina’s role is multifaceted.

As a Music Editor, she navigates the intricate process of film production, representing composers during the final mix or dub.

This high-pressure role requires her to be the intermediary between the creative composing team and filmmakers, all while managing the expectations of major studios.

Despite the challenges, Katrina expresses a profound love for her work, acknowledging the tireless effort required to meet tight deadlines for a film’s highly-anticipated release.

Amidst the bustling world of film and music, Katrina holds dear the memories of her time at Stuartholme. Beyond the academic realm, her boarding school experience forged lasting friendships. “Some of my boarding school friends and I have traversed the world and lived together across the globe, and we are still in close contact,” she shares.

These friendships, born from a shared background of love and support, remain a constant in Katrina’s life. The commonality of coming from caring families, striving for excellence, and navigating the world with respect and humility is a bond that transcends time and distance.

As Katrina Schiller continues to make waves in the global music and film industry, her journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of a Stuartholme education and the enduring connections formed within its halls.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? Pharmacist, owner of TerryWhite Chemmart Goondiwindi.

YOUR JOURNEY SINCE STUARTHOLME: I was involved in many aspects of the school. I enjoyed participating in the vocal ensemble as well as athletics, while Maths and Science were my favourite subjects. I was also honoured to receive the Cor Unum Shield in 1996.

I enjoyed my time at Stuartholme and when it came time to decide what I was going to do, I really had no idea. The options available at the time were so broad.

I decided to do my first year of science at UQ and then I chose to pursue Pharmacy.

The real joy with pharmacy I learned was that you can work in a variety of practices and locations.

I have worked in London, at the PA Hospital, in academic detailing and then I went to Goondiwindi for the picnic races in 2007 … that’s when I met my husband, Andrew – a local Agronomist and I never left.

I bought the pharmacy 12 years ago. Andrew and I have two boys, Robert (9) and Alexander (12) and our family love being a part of the ‘Gundy’ community (greater population of 10 400). I enjoy people saying “hello” when we see each other in the street and the locals appreciating my medical advice and care.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF GOING TO STUARTHOLME? I loved “hanging out” with friends under the jacarandas, sitting in the summer house overlooking the city and playing tennis. I remain great friends with Fiona Slack (McKiernan), Rachel Walsh (Ford), Lotte Turley (Harrington) and keep in touch with others via social media.

HOW DID YOUR TIME AT STUARTHOLME IMPACT YOUR LIFE OR CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS YOUR JOURNEY / WHERE YOU ARE NOW? Stuartholme instilled in me a strong sense of social justice and caring for your community. We were educated within an atmosphere of wise freedom- encouraging independence, having the courage to take risks and try new things. I also learned that it is OK to learn from my mistakes.

I really think that’s why I love “challenging the norm”. I’ve brought bold thinking and innovation to delivering pharmaceuticals in rural and regional areas through the use of robots and drones as well as offering services that were once only available in the city or nearby major towns, like sleep apnoea machines and practising full-scope to help support our local doctors.

It has been great to move to a town where so many Stuartholme Alumnae live. It has helped me develop a wonderful network of friends.

WITH GRATITUDE – A THOUSAND THANKS Since the establishment of Stuartholme School, our community has generously given its time, energy, and resources to support the vision of Madeleine Sophie Barat in creating a school that embodies the educational values of the Sacred Heart.

Barat’s vision and dedication to education led to the establishment of numerous schools and educational institutions worldwide. She emphasised the importance of intellectual and moral development, advocating for a holistic approach to education. Barat’s contributions to education and her commitment to empowering young women have significantly influenced the field of Catholic education. She believed that the education of young people was the work of the heart, and that we should empower individuals to become agents of positive change in the world. This approach was built upon a philosophy that “every child has unique gifts and talents; it is our duty to help them discover and develop their full potential.”

Providing our students with opportunities to develop their unique gifts and reach their full potential has been the mission of our outgoing Board Chair, Helen Spain, over the years. By setting the school the goal of reinvigorating its philanthropic programs to provide future students with equal opportunities to pursue a Sacred Heart education and to reach their full potential, she has created a more inclusive school community. This, in turn, has given our students a sense of being immensely blessed while reflecting on all the possibilities our community support provides them and future students. That’s why we, both the school and the Board, express Mille Mercis (a thousand thanks) with gratitude for your generosity and support of all our fundraising initiatives in 2023.

He gifted the land on which Stuartholme House was built to the Society of the Sacred Heart, led by Mother General Janet Erskine Stuart, to establish the Convent of the Sacred Heart.
