GRANTS www.nursingsociety.org/Grants Give Back to Sustain the Future of Nursing Research

FOUNDATION

Funding Research In 1934, STTI established the first fund for nursing research in the United States, and it is now known as the Research Permanent Fund through the Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing. Since its modest initial award of US $600 in 1936, the organization’s research grant program has continued to grow as scholarly activities and the advancement of nursing science have become more sophisticated and integral to the growth of the nursing profession. STTI annually awards a variety of international and co-sponsored research grants that cover a range of global health topics.

Purpose The purpose of the international grants program is to provide funding for novice researchers, to assist them in beginning their research trajectories and to help more seasoned researchers strike off in new directions. In the process, STTI and the Foundation have contributed significantly to many nurse researchers’ professional careers while also contributing to the advancement of nursing science.

Application Process For complete information, current deadlines, and applications, visit the website or email research@stti.org.

“This was an exciting opportunity for me to meet nursing leaders from around the world. I’ve been impressed by the amount and scope of the nursing research. GLOBAL INITIATIVES www.nursingsociety.org/Global STTI is a global organization with chapters in approximately 30 countries. The Society, formerly known Sigma Theta Tau, added “International” to its name in 1985 to clearly indicate the intention for global growth. The STTI board of directors has approved five key strategies through which the Global Initiatives department will expand the organization’s global reach and ensure its growth, global stability, and success:

These strategies provide a blueprint for how the Global Initiatives department will support STTI’s mission — advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service — and its vision: to be the global organization of choice for nursing. The Global Initiatives department coordinates STTI’s formal representation at the United Nations (U.N.), World Health Organization, World Health Assembly, International Council of Nurses, and other global organizations with like-minded missions. It also provides guidance to support STTI’s formal presence in global regions outside of North America.

GLOBAL INITIATIVES

The mission of the Institutes for Global Healthcare Leadership is to educate and empower leaders in healthcare around the globe to be change agents. The institutes use strategic global perspectives that incorporate business culture with an evidenced-based approach to positively influence health outcomes for all. Composed of both the Emerging Global Leader Institute and Experienced Global Leader Institute, the institutes prepare healthcare leaders to effectively work in and/or lead major public health departments, public or private organizations, and global programs and initiatives.

STTI and the United Nations The U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in July 2012 adopted the recommendation of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations to grant Special Consultative Status to STTI. This U.N. designation recognizes STTI’s commitment to the charter of the U.N., which seeks to achieve international cooperation toward solving humanitarian issues. STTI’s special status pertains to competence in the field of nursing, which extends to global health. This status allows STTI greater privileges, access to nearly all intergovernmental processes at the U.N. dealing with economic and social development – including health issues, sustainable development and human rights – and allows STTI to participate on U.N. committees and to have a voice at the U.N. Through this affiliation, STTI commits to disseminate information and raise public awareness about the purposes and activities of the U.N. and related issues of global concern. STTI provides a strong nursing presence at the U.N. and will continue to conduct outreach around the world to help our nurse members better understand the U.N. work and aims, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) listed on the following page.

GLOBAL ADVISORY PANEL ON THE FUTURE OF NURSING & MIDWIFERY (GAPFON) www.gapfon.org

GLOBAL INITIATIVES

What is GAPFON? STTI is partnering with global nurse leaders to establish a voice and vision for the future of nursing that will advance global health. GAPFON seeks to provide evidence on the value of nursing, and to participate in and influence health policy, nursing leadership and practice, education, and the global health agenda.

Why GAPFON? On 25 September 2015, the U.N. formally announced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which highlighted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Expandingbeyond the U.N. Millennium Development Goals, the 17 SDGs and their corresponding 169 targets integrate the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental. The goals and targets will stimulate action over the next 15 years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet. In conjunction with the new SDGs and the advancement of world health, GAPFON provides a communications conduit allowing conversation about the most important issues facing global health, nursing, and midwifery, now and in the future. GAPFON also seeks to align economic, social, and environmental pathways for the advancement of global health, and to identify how nursing and midwifery can take a lead in such endeavors.

How can I get involved? For information about regional meetings and other GAPFON activities, please visit the GAPFON website. Updates and new developments will be posted as the details are finalized. If you have specific questions related to GAPFON, please email gapfon@stti.org.
