Welcome and Outcomes Howdy, friends! On behalf of the entire Sigma Board of Directors, we offer you a hearty western welcome to historic San Antonio, Texas, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) 47th Biennial Convention. Thank you for joining us and 2,000 of your colleagues from more than 50 countries around the world.

Beyond educational content and connection opportunities, the 47th Biennial Convention officially caps off our 100th Anniversary celebration. As we look to the next 100 years, we will be asking you to share your ideas for the future. We believe Sigma’s recognition and support of nurses is as great and relevant today as it was when we were founded. We believe that love, courage, and honor still do—and always will—matter. To help you maximize your convention experience, we encourage you to download and use the Sigma event app. It contains the most up-to-date session information and allows you to build a schedule to successfully navigate your way through the multiple options available for you each day. Along the way, we trust you will find common ground with the powerhouse of nurses assembled at this event. Please take time to enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of our host city with friends old and new. Perhaps we’ll see you on the Riverwalk. Sigma’s 47th Biennial Convention offers you an unmatched opportunity to connect with colleagues, restore your spirit, and find ways to Be Bold. We hope you’ll make the most of this convention, and we look forward to sharing these days with you.

General Information Name Badges

Parents With Children

Your badge admits you to all conference sessions and events and must be visible to security guards, moderators, and staff. If you misplace your badge, please visit Sigma’s registration desk for a replacement. You will be charged a US $25 replacement fee. For your safety, please write on the back of the badge your emergency contact information, any food or medicine allergies, and any significant medical condition(s). Do not wear your name badge while walking outside. You can recycle your name badge holder after the event in the recycle bins in Sigma’s registration area.

We understand that many event attendees are parents. Due to the nature of Sigma’s professional educational programs, we recommend limiting children’s attendance in sessions to quiet infants and non-separating children. We ask parents to be sensitive to situations—including happy baby noises— that may affect the concentration of session attendees and presenters and step out if necessary. We appreciate your consideration of your fellow conference attendees.

No-Smoking Policy

Refer to the event schedule on pages 6-7 for poster viewing and Meet the Poster Author session times.

Oral Presenter Information Presenters, please refer to your registration information for the time, date, and room of your presentation. No further signin is necessary for this event. The Presenter Ready Room is located in room 208 on the Meeting Level of the Convention Center, and it provides a place to practice presentations. If using slides, presenters may view their presentation in the Presenter Ready Room. Please note: Internet access is not available on these computers. Refer to the event schedule for times the Presenter Ready Room is open. The only equipment provided on-site for oral presentations is a computer and an LCD projector. Because of contractual agreements with the audiovisual provider and the possibility of virus transfers, you cannot connect personal equipment (e.g., flash/jump drives, CDs, etc.) to the computers or use it in the presentation rooms. Additional charges are incurred with each violation and may be passed on to you. Please note that this policy will be strictly enforced.

Plenary Sessions These presentations will take place in the Hemisfair Ballroom on the Ballroom Level of the Convention Center. Attendees can be seated 30 minutes prior to the start of the session. For titles and times, please refer to the event schedule.

VELCRO®, push pins, or double-sided tape should be used to fasten the poster to the board provided. It is suggested that both sides of the VELCRO® are used. Materials used to ship or carry posters cannot be left in the poster area. Materials may be stored in the designated area in the ballroom; however, your hotel room is the best place for these items. Neither Sigma nor the Henry B. González Convention Center is responsible for any materials left in the poster area. If posters or other materials are not removed from Exhibit Hall 4, they will be discarded.

Grant Recipient Testimonials “This research will provide the first steps to the theoretical constructions and start an epistemological dialog from the Global-South to the Global-North. The essence of being a nurse in Latin America will be described and theoretical postulates to overcome language barriers in theoretical development and promote the advancement and growth of the core disciplinary nursing knowledge.”

“This study will provide critical data needed to design culturally appropriate physical activity (PA) interventions for middle-aged US South Asian Indian (SAI) women at risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). The data gathered will contribute to the national goals of reducing health disparities among minority groups and chronic conditions that affect the health of individuals, families, and communities by informing the future development and testing of interventions to promote PA among middle-aged US SAI women at risk for T2D. The overall goal of this study is to promote health and reduce mortality and the health disparities related to T2D. The proposed research is innovative because it seeks to understand new, relevant knowledge regarding cultural factors that promote and/or hinder PA in this socially vulnerable, underserved, highly understudied minority population with a qualitative approach using the Theory of Planned Behavior to design focus group discussion. This is critical for informing the development of effective PA interventions to reduce the risk of chronic health conditions by understanding the factors that influence the SAI women’s participation in PA.” - Nitha Mathew Joseph, PhD, RN, CNE The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Cizik School of Nursing
