President, St. Thomas University

David A. Armstrong, J.D., is St. Thomas University’s 10th President. Since taking the helm in August 2018, he has led the University to witness record enrollment, historic highs in fundraising, and the development of over 400,000 square feet of new facilities. The campus footprint has been expanded to include the Gus Machado College of Business, the 152-room Center Hall, and a new Student Union and Dining Facility. In fall 2025, a new residence hall will be completed, adding 545 beds, a bowling alley, and an additional dining venue.

Under his leadership, STU continues to be recognized as one of the nation’s fastest-growing faith-based schools of higher education. Fall 2019 through Fall 2024 saw the six largest incoming undergraduate classes in university history. St. Thomas University was ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Report in Social Mobility for regional universities in the South, which means STU takes students from the lowest financial strata and catapults them to a much higher financial strata in only 10 years. In April 2024, Carnegie classified STU as an Opportunity College and University – Higher Access, Higher Earnings.

Armstrong came to St. Thomas University from Thomas More University, a Catholic liberal arts college belonging to the Diocese of Covington, Kentucky, where he was President from 2013 to 2018.

Prior to Thomas More University, he served as Vice President and General Counsel of Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio, where he oversaw divisions of the college that set records in enrollment and fundraising.

His background in higher education administration at Notre Dame College, Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania, and Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, includes a span of experience in development, student life, recruitment, higher education law and policy, and athletics.

Armstrong, a nationally recognized speaker on future trends of higher education law and Title IX, has dedicated his career to ensuring small, faith-based colleges and universities not only survive but thrive in the new landscape of higher education. His commitment to the transformative power of education has driven the colleges he has worked for to experience remarkable growth in enrollment, corporate partnerships, and collaboration. His vision has guided institutions into the future with comprehensive strategic plans, which emphasize student success, faculty innovation, and increased donor and alumni engagement and giving.

President Armstrong serves on the boards of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF), The Florida Chamber of Commerce, Students ACES, the Florida Council of 100, and the Florida Tax Watch. He serves on the Orange Bowl Committee and is a member of the Beacon Council’s Board of Directors and its Academic Leaders Council. Armstrong is also a member of the Sun Conference Executive Committee, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, The South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and The Broward Workshop.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, President Armstrong holds a Juris Doctor from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with a Minor in Accounting, from Mercyhurst University.

President Armstrong is married to Leslie Armstrong, a former special education teacher with 18 years of experience in urban education. He has two children, David Balthazar, and Johanna Marie, both STU graduates.

Dean & Professor of Law

The Honorable Tarlika Nunez-Navarro, J.D.

Dean Tarlika Nunez-Navarro is a transformative leader at the St. Thomas University Benjamin L. Crump College of Law, where she has significantly elevated the school’s profile and rankings in legal academia. Under her stewardship, the law school has achieved record enrollment numbers, with a 19.01% increase from 2023 to 2024, reached the highest July bar passage rate in the school’s history at 83%, and saw a 13-point jump in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Schools” rankings, reflecting her commitment to academic excellence and student success.

Appointed to the bench by both Senator Rick Scott and Governor Ron DeSantis, she made history as the first Colombian American to serve on the Circuit Court bench in Florida’s Ninth and Seventeenth Judicial Circuits. Her dedication to justice extends beyond the courtroom; she has taught Advanced Trial Litigation, Women in the Law seminar, and now focuses on guiding the next generation of law students to become ethical change agents in the legal profession.

Prior to her judicial career, Dean Navarro practiced law in the private sector, specializing in criminal defense, and served as an Assistant State Attorney in Broward County.

Dean Navarro has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Jurist of the Year award, the Jurist of the Month award, and has been honored as a Champion for her impactful work within the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Drug Court program.

In addition to her academic and judicial roles, Dean Navarro co-authored a children’s book that emphasizes the importance of the rule of law and encourages children to believe in their dreams. As the first alumna to serve as Dean of St. Thomas University College of Law, Dean Navarro is proud to lead an institution that boasts the largest assembly of female Hispanic judges in the nation.

Listed amongst the Most Influential People of 2021 by TIME100, Ebony Magazine’s Power 100 Most Influential African Americans, The National Trial Lawyers’ Top 100 Lawyers and the 2014 NNPA Newsmaker of the Year, civil rights and personal injury Attorney Benjamin L. Crump is referred to as “Black America’s Attorney General.” Benjamin L. Crump has established himself as one of the nation’s foremost lawyers and advocates for social justice, winning a number of record settlements and verdicts for victims and families that have faced injustice.

He has worked on some of the most high-profile cases in the U.S. representing the families of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tyre Nichols and Henrietta Lacks in a landmark reparations case. Crump also represented the residents of Flint, Michigan who were affected by the poisoned water of the Flint River, achieving a landmark settlement of $626 million.

In 2022, Crump was retained by Randy Cox whose police brutality case reached a record-breaking settlement of $45 million a year later. In the historic case of Tamara Lanier versus Harvard, Crump’s passionate advocacy before the Massachusetts Supreme Court led to them ruling in favor of a Black woman who sued Harvard for the possession of photographs of her enslaved ancestors, which are estimated to be valued at $100 million.

Crump currently represents the family of Malcolm X who filed a landmark lawsuit against the federal government and the NYPD for the conspiracy surrounding Malcolm X’s assassination. Crump’s tireless advocacy has led to legislation preventing excessive force and developing implicit bias training and policies. His book, published in October 2019, Open Season: Legalized Genocide of Colored People, reflects on the landmark cases he has battled, and how discrimination in the courthouse devastates real families and communities. During the consequential year after George Floyd was murdered, Netflix documentary film crews chronicled Crump’s work in the award-winning documentary, Civil.

When St. Thomas University renamed their law school the Benjamin L. Crump College of Law in 2023, Attorney Crump became the first practicing Black attorney to have a law school named after him. He is the founder and principal owner of Ben Crump Law, PLLC.

Commencement Speaker

Drew Rosenhaus is a nationally recognized sports agent and the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Rosenhaus Sports Representation (RSR), one of the most influential and successful athlete representation firms in the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB).

At 22, while still a law student, Rosenhaus became history’s youngest registered NFL agent, setting a precedent for a bold, relentless approach that defined his career. Since founding RSR in 1989, Drew Rosenhaus has negotiated over $10 billion in professional contracts and has represented hundreds of NFL and MLB athletes, establishing himself as a leading figure in sports law and athlete management. His reputation for innovation and tireless advocacy has earned him unique visibility. He is the only sports agent to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Featured in a national ESPN and Burger King commercials, he had a cameo appearance in and served as a consultant to the films Jerry Maguire and Any Given Sunday and regularly contributed to HBO’s series Arliss. Additionally, he frequently appears as a commentator on sports issues on ABC Primetime Live, ABC Nightline, ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption, ESPN’s Outside the Lines, Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, among others. He also co-authored the autobiography “A Shark Never Sleeps” with his brother Jason.

Drew’s connection to the South Florida football community and St. Thomas University is deep and personal. As a child, he and his brother, Jason, were avid Miami Dolphins fans, attending practices at St. Thomas University, where the Dolphins held training camp. These early experiences laid the foundation for his passion for football and athlete representation. His first professional client was NFL cornerback Robert Massey, whom he signed and represented while still in law school. In an unprecedented move at the time, he successfully negotiated a high-profile contract with the New Orleans Saints on national television.

Rosenhaus Sports Representation has become a multi-faceted agency offering comprehensive services, including career management, marketing, endorsements, media relations, draft preparation, post-career counseling, and philanthropic advising. Under Drew’s leadership and in partnership with his brother Jason, RSR has developed strong affiliations with leading brands and institutions, including Nike, Coca-Cola, Under Armour, ESPN, and the NFL Network.

Mr. Rosenhaus’s influence extends beyond the football field. Recognized by Sports Business Journal as the #1 agent in 2006, he is known for his aggressive representation style, unyielding work ethic, and dedication to his clients’ success both on and off the field. His firm has negotiated over 1,100 professional contracts since 2004, and RSR continues to be at the forefront of athlete representation, known for shaping careers and setting industry benchmarks.

Drew Rosenhaus remains a prominent voice in the sports industry and a respected figure in legal and academic circles concerning sports law, contract negotiation, and athlete development. He holds a Juris Doctor (JD) from Duke University School of Law and a double major Bachelor Science in Business Administration with a concentration in International Finance and a concentration in Marketing from the University of Miami. His philosophy: “Work hard, fight for your dreams, and never give up.”

Student Speaker

Alexander Kutsaev is a first-generation law student from Russia. After spending over a decade in the business world, Mr. Kutsaev made the decision to pursue a new path in the legal profession.

He started law school at St. Thomas University Benjamin L. Crump College of Law in August 2022. During his three years of law school, he was the high scoring student in his law school classes earning multiple CALI Book Awards, Dean’s List honors for all semesters, and accumulating more than 220 pro bono hours serving the community.

Following his first year, Alexander served as a judicial intern at the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida for the Honorable Judge Beth Bloom. He also became an Academic Success Program Fellow, helping incoming 1Ls navigate their first year in law school, joined Trial Team, actively engaged in student leadership as a Vice-President External Affairs for Tax Law Society. Additionally, he served as a Tax Preparer and Site Coordinator operating the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Site at St. Thomas University College of Law for two tax seasons and assisting low-income taxpayers with filing their tax returns and securing tax refunds for their families.

Alexander further deepened his interest in tax law as a Research and Teaching Assistant to Tax Law Professor Mark J. Wolff for the Corporate Taxation course. He also participated in the Tax Clinic, where he represented low-income taxpayers in tax controversies before the IRS and the U.S. Tax Court. Recently, Alexander was admitted to NYU’s highly competitive and consistently ranked first in the nation Tax Graduate Program with a generous scholarship offer.

Beyond his academic and professional achievements, Alexander is a devoted husband and the proud father of three children Alex, Andrew, and Diana. His wife, Liliia, and their children are the support system that inspires and propels Alexander toward his dreams.

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bomb bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

And the rocket’s red glare, the bomb bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,

O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

St. Thomas now we sing our song of gladness, To be a part of your great, honored name.

St. Thomas now we sing our song of gladness,

To be a part of your great, honored name.

Born in the light of noble St. Augustine, Your teachings stand like beacons on our shores. Keep live in us the memories now we treasure, And bring us to Your eternal home.
