‘INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN EVERY INDIVIDUAL’, A PRESENTATION

BY JAMES SHONE FROM ‘I CAN & I AM’ James Shone will share an inspirational presentation with a truly stirring story and philosophy to help adults and young people understand how best to respond to serious setbacks, teenage anxiety and general lack of self-esteem. His relevant, challenging and amusing talk explores life in education today with advice on how to best navigate the challenges that might be faced.

Following a 16-year teaching career and having been offered a job as headmaster in 2012, James was diagnosed with a brain tumour that left him with very little sight.

However, James is a man who embodies a positive attitude to life and a determination to turn setbacks into springboards. As a teacher, this was at the heart of his pastoral message but his focus is now on the charity he has set up called ‘I Can & I Am’ which raises valuable funds to enable James’s messages to be spread to as many school children, staff and parents as possible across the UK and beyond.

Put simply, the heart of the charity is to inspire confidence in every individual to enable them to know who they are and what they are able to do, rather than focusing on what they can’t.

HISTORIES OF THE UNEXPECTED LIVE! – AN EVENING WITH DR SAM WILLIS AND PROFESSOR JAMES DAYBELL Based on the chart-topping podcast and bestselling book, Histories of the Unexpected LIVE! is a show that demonstrates how everything has a history - even the most unexpected of subjects - and how everything links together in surprising ways. Who knew that the history of the smile is all about Charles Darwin and the history of electrocution? Or that the history of gloves is all about the beheading of Mary Queen of Scots?

And what links together Pompeii, the Titanic, Neolithic cave painting, perfume, scalping, Horatio Nelson, Henry VIII, Hiroshima, the Duke of Wellington, razorgangs, Shakespeare, mutiny, chimneys and a seventeenth century map of the world? You’ll just have to come to find out....

Dr Sam Willis is one of the country’s best-known TV historians and has made more than ten multi-part series for the BBC and National Geographic including The Silk Road. Professor James Daybell is one of the country’s leading historical thinkers. He has written more than fourteen books on the Tudors and seventeenth-century history.
