INTRODUCTION Medico Fabrication Inc. has been in business since 1996. But it wasn’t until the acquisition of M.P. Husky (B.C.) Ltd. in 2004, that we began using the trade name SUPERIOR TRAY. We have since become a major competitor in the Cable Tray and Cable Bus industry, as well as a leader in the manufacturing of EHouses/Kiosks and Custom Enclosures, while still maintaining our superiority and craftsmanship for custom fabrication.

We offer you the ability to purchase directly from us, no need to go through a distributor, saving any markup cost and any questions you may have are answered quickly and more efficiently. Superior Tray is a CSA and UL certified Cable Tray/Cable Support System. Medico Fabrication Inc. manufactures custom designed top quality heavy duty cable tray systems which are reliable, robust and cost effective. They are excellent in quality, performance and durability.

Superior Tray manufactures six (6) types of Cable Tray Systems; namely, Ladder Tray, Hefty Tray, Instrument Channel, Center Hung, Basket Tray and Special Trays.

1. Ladder Tray (Flanges In) This tray with flanges in is best for supporting instrumentation, power and control cables of various diameters. It is particularly used by power plants, pulp and paper mills, petrochemical plants and industrial construction that require reliability and may have limited space available. These trays are manufactured from aluminum, mill galvanized steel, HDGAF steel or stainless steel based on project needs. Powder coat finishes are also available.

2. Hefty Tray (Flanges Out) This tray with flanges out is designed for multiple large cables and is frequently installed at paper mills, power plants and other industrial plants. The design has the rungs welded to the outside of the rails to further enhance its structural integrity while reducing side rail rotation.

These trays are manufactured either from aluminum, mill galvanized steel, HDGAF steel or stainless steel based on project requirements. Powder coat finishes are also available.

3. Instrument Channel Instrument Channel is a one-piece channel section, typically used to carry instrumentation, control, data communication, computer or telephone cable. The channel section comes with ventilated or solid bottom. The tray is designed to carry both single power cable and multiple circuit cables.

4. Center Hung This tray has been designed to simplify the support and routing of power and telecom/teledata cabling.

Reduced support requirements make installation easier, providing substantial savings on both cost and installation time. On a center hung tray, cables may run on both sides.

5. Basket Tray This is a wire mesh style cable tray designed for the data and communications cabling industry, provides the additional support that sensitive cables and fiber optics require to prevent damage by using basket tray’s welded mesh.

6. Special Trays The design and manufacturing team of Superior Tray have developed several custom designed unique trays for our customers’ specific project needs. These special trays have been classified into five categories: a) b) c) d) e)

SUPERIOR TRAY BENEFITS The benefits of Superior Tray Cable Tray Systems vary depending on the type of tray required.

Where the power cables enter or exit conduit, the conduit to cable tray clamps may be installed upright or inverted to terminate conduits on the top or bottom of the cable tray side rail.

The Ladder Tray is used in approximately 75% of the cable tray wiring system installations, due to its many desirable features:

Moisture cannot accumulate in ladder trays.

•

•

If cable trays are being installed where working space is a problem, hand access through the cable tray bottom may help to facilitate the installation of small diameter cables such as: control instrumentation, signal, etc.

•

•

A Ladder Tray without covers permits the maximum free flow of air across the cables. This allows the heat produced in the cable’s conductor to effectively dissipate. Under such conditions, the conductor insulation in the cables of a properly designed cable tray system will not exceed its maximum operating temperature.

The cables will not prematurely deteriorate due to excessive operating temperatures.

The rungs of the Ladder Tray provide convenient anchors to tie down the cables in the non-horizontal cable tray runs or where the positions of the cable tray must be maintained in the horizontal cable tray runs. This is necessary for single conductor cable installations, because under fault conditions (short circuit), the magnetic forces produced by the fault current will move the single conductor cables from the cable tray if they are not securely anchored to the tray.

Hefty Tray benefits are similar to ladder tray with the major difference is the tray’s outward flanges that is required at many power cable installation project for external rigid attachment. It is most suitable for multiple large cables installation.

Center Hung Tray is used to support and route power and telecom/teledata cables. The simple design saves time and has less support requirements. This saves 50% in material cost compared to standard cable trays.

On the other hand, the basket tray is designed to provide additional support to prevent damage of the sensitive and fiber optic cables for the data and communications cabling industry.

Power cables may exit or enter the ladder trays through the top or the bottom of the cable tray.

CENTER HUNG TRAY INTRODUCTION

Easy step 1, 2, 3 connections for fast and effective site installation: Step 1 - insert rod in splice

For an integrated wire management system, Center Hung Tray simplifies the support and routing of power and telecom/teledata cabling. A single hanger rod is used at each support point. This makes installation easier by reducing support requirements and eliminating the need to pull cable through the trapeze supports.

Center Hung provides substantial savings in cost and time. With Center Hung Tray, cables can be laid in on both sides.

Both the support and connection of the Center Hung Tray sections are accomplished by a single splice coupling designed to save time. If additional support is needed beyond the 10 feet or 3 meter intervals, an intermediate support hanger can be used.

Step 2 - connect center section to splice

Center Hung Tray rungs come already attached transversely through either the top or bottom of the center tubular rail. Each rung is securely staked to the center rail in four places, providing additional strength and rigidity for reliable cable support. The chances for damaging and losing rungs during transportation and cable installation are significantly reduced with this safe, reliable and secure method of rung attachment.

Basket tray is a wire mesh style cable tray system designed for sensitive cable applications in the data and communications industry. It utilizes high mechanical strength steel wire that is welded into a 2″ x 2″ grid system. This grid system is then formed into channels which support and carry cables. By using Basket Tray’s welded mesh, sensitive cables and fiber optics receive additional support and are safe from any damage due to sharp edges.

HORIZONTAL 90° CONNECTOR KIT (SSP-90-2)

This kit uses our unique 90° splice connectors that maximize cable support while field cutting is minimized by overlapping and clamping into place.

Each Kit has 2 back plates, one “L” shaped plate, nuts and bolts.

Superior Tray developed several custom designed trays, classified as Special Trays because they are custom manufactured for special installations. Special trays such as the EMI and EAM tray are utilized in industrial facilities having computerized or automated processing equipment where it is necessary to minimize the interferences that are induced in process control and instrumentation cables. We also manufacture AI7 tray, Telco Tray and Universal Tray for special commercial and industrial installations.

The catalog number for a straight section is: E M (D) – (W) – 120 Replace (D) with desired depth and (W) with the width.

Each straight section includes cover, wrap-around splice, hardware and self-drilling cover screws.

THE EMI ENCLOSURE SYSTEM TECHNICAL INFORMATION With the increased use of computerized processing equipment in large industrial facilities, the minimization of interference induced in the communication link between the in-plant transducers or primary elements and controllers becomes critical. Depending upon the installation, this link, in most cases a pair or electrical conductors, may be very short, or may run for several hundred feet.

The longer the control-signal cable, the more susceptible it is to induced electrical noise. Shielding these cables with a copper braid or metallic tape will protect them from each other, but for long runs a better method of shielding is necessary for protection against external interferences. To shield these cables individually is impractical because of the large number used in a complex industrial control system. Numerous control signal cables can be protected from interference by using a properly designed and shielded enclosure.

Undesirable voltage is induced into the control signal cables by five methods: 1. Electrostatic Fields.

2. Electromagnetic Fields.

3. Plane Wave Radiation.

4. Cross Talk 5. Common Mode.

Cross Talk and Common Mode interference are functions of the control circuits themselves and must be handled through the proper selection of cable and grounding methods. Plane wave radiation, which is of concern at very high frequencies (30 MHz), is generally not a problem in the typical industrial or utility environments.

Electrostatic and Electromagnetic Fields are important and directly influence the selection of shielded cable enclosures.

Electrostatic interference is caused by stray capacitance between the control-signal cable and other conductors and machinery in the area. This stray capacitance can be reduced by completely enclosing the control-signal in a shielded enclosure which is a good electrical conductor. The measure of electrical effectiveness in this situation is the electrostatic attenuation. This attenuation is determined by measuring the undesirable induced voltage in the control signal cable within the shielded cable enclosure.

The enclosure must be properly grounded if it is to act as an electrostatic shield.

Electromagnetic interference is caused by the mutual inductance between the control signal cables and other surrounding power cables and machinery. This mutual inductance can be reduced (shielding the control cable) if the control signal cable is completely enclosed in a

good magnetic material. An electromagnetic attenuation parameter can be defined in the same manner as the electrostatic attenuation.

Unfortunately, good electrical conductors are not effective magnetic (high permeability) materials. The converse is also true. In most industrial installations, shielding must be provided against both electrostatic and electromagnetic fields. Thus a compromise must be made.

The attenuation parameters (electrostatic and electromagnetic) may be measured under laboratory conditions. A test setup is used to create the proper type of field, and the induced voltage “ ” in a control signal cable is measured with the cable suspended in free air. Then the test is repeated with the control signal cable enclosed in the shielded enclosure and the induced voltage “e” is measured.

The shielding effectiveness is given by the ratio of these voltages: S= The greater the ratio, the better the shield is. Due to the wide dynamic range of “S” for different types of shields, the attenuation is usually expressed as twenty times the logarithm to the base ten of “S”.

A = 20 S or A = 20 The attenuation parameters are both functions of frequency and therefore are usually shown by a graphical display of “AS” (Electrostatic Attenuation) and “AM” (Electromagnetic Attenuation) plotted versus frequency.

Protection of Control and Instrumentation Cable The type of signal transmitted by the primary element to the controller determines how sensitive the signal is to extraneous electrical interference. For example, the lower the voltage the higher the impedance and more susceptible the circuit is to interference.

Since most process type primary elements operate at low voltages and amperes, care must be taken when selecting shielding requirements. Typical levels of operation range between less than 100MV to 5V on voltage type elements and 1MA to 50MA on current systems.

Many companies, who have installed automated process control, have found that high additional costs are incurred in eliminating interference in systems during the check-out and start-up stages of construction. By selecting the proper cable and EMI enclosure in the engineering stage, additional costs are eliminated.

Superior EMI enclosures offer excellent attenuation characteristics while providing a low-cost economical installation that allows for additional control cables, check-out and rewiring. The following figures illustrate the attenuation levels for both electromagnetic and electrostatic interference over the general frequency range of concern.

The interfering induced voltages are caused by surge voltages which are either continuous wave or impulse wave types. The over-voltages are present due to periodic transients, switching surges, circuit breaker or GAP flashover.

Typically, indeed voltages on the control cables are in the order of 10-15KV if not adequately shielded. A shielded control cable enclosed in an EMI enclosure offers the best overall protection. EMI enclosures facilitate the placement of control cables above ground where rewiring or additions are added without the high costs and corrosion problems associated with underground methods.

TYPICAL EMI SPECIFICATION 1. General 1.1 Scope This specification includes all the necessary materials to provide an EMI enclosure system with high degree of electrostatic and electromagnetic shielding for low level control circuits. The enclosures are designed and constructed to be equal or better than the EM-shielding attributes herein specified, over the frequency range of 60Hz to 100 KHz. 1.2 Basic Design To meet the requirements of this specification the cable tray and cover must totally enclose the specified cables, circuits, and/or devices with metal. Non-metallic materials are not acceptable for this purpose.

2. Attenuation Requirements 2.1 Electrostatic Attenuation The minimum acceptable electrostatic (electrical field) shielding efficiency for the enclosure to be supplied for this installation is 86 db in the range of 60Hz to 100 KHz. 2.2 Electromagnetic Attenuation The minimum magnetic field shielding efficiency increases from 9 db to 55 db over frequency range of 60 Hz through 100 KHz.

THE EMI ENCLOSURE SYSTEM 2.3 Certification Superior Tray certifies that the EMI enclosure is equal to or better than the shielding efficiency mentioned in paragraph 2.1 and 2.2. Such certification consists of a report evaluation tests performed by Superior Tray or by an independent testing laboratory. The report describes the enclosure, the test methods used to evaluate the product and technical data (graphs, charts, etc.) supporting the shielding performance claims for the products.

3. Additional Requirements 3.1 General In addition to the above attenuation requirements, the completed EMI enclosure systems are readily accessible for installation, rearrangement, and inspection of cables supported.

Additionally, the Superior Tray enclosure systems meet the following electrical and mechanical requirements.

3.2 Electrical Continuity and Grounding All components of the enclosure system are thoroughly grounded to conform to the NEC requirements. A bare copper bonding cable is installed in the enclosure to provide adequate grounding continuity. Each section of the enclosure and all fittings are securely bonded to the

ground bus in the enclosure with suitable grounding fitting to ascertain continuity to ground throughout the enclosure system.

3.3 Material Specifications All members of the enclosure system, unless specified otherwise, are made from the same steel as standard cable tray, and all EMI enclosure are hot-dip mill galvanized. Application of design rules and fabrication are in accordance with A.I.S.I specifications and A.W.S. standards. The hot dip galvanized protective covering conforms to the following A.S.T.M. standard. A-525G90 specification for Zinc coating (galvanized) is used on all steel enclosure parts.

3.4 Design Load Design loads (lbs/linear ft.) for the enclosures are in accordance with the loading table of this chapter.

3.5 Approval of EMI Enclosures The contractor shall submit for approval, as soon as practical and within 30 days after the award of contract and before the purchase of material, a complete schedule of the materials and equipment proposed for installation including the specified data and the Manufacturer’s name.

EAM TRAY EAM Tray is more of a wireway enclosure system that protects the control and instrumentation cables from undesirable voltage interference and electric noise.

Other than that it is similar to EMI enclosure system.

The wireway enclosure is installed and supported on top of the Cable Tray using ASC Support Channels, Redi-Rods and EAMB brackets. Power Cables are installed on the cable tray while the wireway enclosure provides a segregated barrier to protect the control signal and lighting circuit cables from undesirable interference and electric noise.

BRACKET ANGLES

Channel Clamp assemblies can be used on all American Standard channels with a flange width of 3-1/4″ or less. They are furnished in zinc plated steel with or without a swivel joint.

Bracket Angles are used to connect two wall brackets, which then serve as a support for vertical runs. Cable trays are then bolted to bracket angles with support angle clips. Bracket angles have a series of slots to allow the attachment of various types of tray of the same width to the same bracket angle. It is fabricated from hot dip galvanized steel.

VERTICAL RUN SUPPORTS Superior Tray supplies a wide variety of vertical run supports depending on the load, support spacing and distance of the run from the wall or supporting structure.

The support spacing for vertical runs is recommended to be no less than six feet and no more than twelve feet. Brackets are available for spacing of 3, 12, 24 and 36 inches from the wall to accommodate the various radii bends that may be entering or leaving the supporting wall. Vertical runs usually consist of either a Z-Bracket for a 3 inch distance from the wall only, or a pair of brackets with the necessary support angles and clips to fasten the tray to the support.

The proper support angle and number of bracket angle clips for the tray to be used must be determined in addition to wall brackets. For each application, the actual load per bracket must be checked against the maximum allowable load on the bracket.

To utilize the full strength of the brackets, the 3 bolts of 1/2″ diameter for which the wall members are drilled must be used.

Maximum allowable load: 4,000 lbs. when applied as 2 equally concentrated loads, spaced at least 2′-4″ apart on brackets five feet wide and under; or at least 4′-6″ apart on brackets over five feet wide. The capacity is greater when used for a uniformly distributed load.

COVERS AND COVER FASTENERS INTRODUCTION Superior Tray offers a wide variety of covers that provides the cables contained within the system protection from sunlight, environmental elements, dirt, debris, and falling objects. All of the covers listed here are used for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Covers are fabricated from corrosion resistant aluminum, mill-galvanized steel, and 304 or 316 stainless steel. Although not recommended, covers can be supplied in HDGAF steel on request (some distortion may occur when dipping). LOUVERED

Flat covers are economical and available for all straight sections and fittings. These covers are available flat without flanges or flat with 3/8″ flanges for Ladder Tray and Hefty Tray. Flat flanged covers should be used on all 4″ and 6″ wide channel applications requiring covers.

Louvered covers are available for all straight sections and are available as Flat, Flat Flanged, or Hat Shaped.

VENTILATED HAT-SHAPED Hat-shaped covers are designed to protect installations where the cables extend above the upper flanges of the tray. Hat-shaped covers are available with a flat solid top as well as ventilated top and are in 2″ or 4″ height.

Ventilated covers are rigid, lightweight and will readily form to vertical fittings, with the exception of Hefty Tray style. These ventilated covers can be flat sheet type, hat shaped type or hefty tray style. All covers for horizontal fittings are made of non-ventilated (solid) flat sheets without a flange.

PEAKED Peaked covers are generally used to deflect falling objects or to prevent the accumulation of snow or other debris. Standard peak height is 1/2″. However, higher peaks are available upon request.

Cover fasteners must be ordered separately for the application and spacing desired. Both clips and clamps are used indoors, but only clamps are used for outdoor applications. Standard quantities of clips and clamps used for most conditions are given below:

ACCESSORIES, SPLICES & CONNECTORS HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL HINGED SPLICES Horizontal and Vertical Hinged Splices offer field flexibility to go around pipes, ducts, and other obstacles that occur during installation. Electrical continuity is maintained by using (AFS-C) bonding jumpers, which are purchased separately. Hinged Splices for Tray come in sets of two.

END PLATES EXPANSION JOINT SPLICE PLATES Expansion Splice Plates for tray are designed to allow 1-1/2″ free movement between adjacent straight lengths. When using expansion splices, it is important that the straight run be fixed permanently to its support at the approximate center between expansion joints whenever possible, and that all other points be supported in a manner that the longitudinal expansion is not restricted. Supports should be provided within one foot on each side of an expansion joint to ensure its proper functioning.

Blind End Plates are available for all tray types and are furnished with mounting hardware.

Splice hardware is offered in standard zinc plated steel finish, or in 304 and 316 stainless steel to withstand corrosive attack under many atmospheric conditions.

END DROPOUT This dropout is used at the end of a cable tray system, or to provide a smooth drop off for small cables at any point between the rungs in the ladder system. It is used in pairs, where dropping cable from both directions, or singly, when dropping cable in one direction.

BONDING JUMPERS Bonding jumpers maintain electrical continuity across hinged and expansion splices. The aluminum jumpers are used with oxidation inhibitor under the contact points. The short circuit rating is 2000 Amperes.

GROUNDING CLAMPS

Type GC Connectors hold a single through cable and a tap cable while separating the ground conductor from the cable tray surface. Note that the bolt head is mounted on the inside wall of the cable tray to avoid damage to the cable insulation. Grounding connectors may be used with aluminum or galvanized steel cable trays. When mounted horizontally, the bolt may be used to replace one of the bolts in a splice plate.

Type GBM Clamps hold a single through cable directly on the cable tray surface.

Mini Trim

MINI TRIM Mini trim can be used as a protective edging to protect cables from sharp surfaces that cables may contact.

Mini trim is a vinyl embossed extrusion with a segmented metal core that can be cut with a knife between the metal core segments. It will grip edges from .010″ to .050″ thick, and is supplied in 100 ft. rolls in black.

SEPARATOR FOR VERTICAL BENDS

Cable separators (divider strips) are available for all tray types in aluminum, mill galvanized and 304 or 316 stainless steel. Separators come in either 3″ or 5″ heights and are slotted at regular intervals for ease of installation without field drilling. Separator Rung Fasteners must be ordered separately for attachment to Tray rungs without drilling.

The following information is required while ordering: 1. Inside or outside bend 2. Degree of bend 3. Radius of bend Example: A3V-VI45-24

Vertical separators must be factory formed to the proper radius needed. Vertical separators can be ordered to the degree of bend or the customer can order all 90° separators and field cut them to the proper degree bends.

SEPARATOR FOR STRAIGHT LENGTHS Standard length is 12 feet. The grouping of slots is designed to fit the hole-pattern of ventilated Tray.
