2022 is the year of community care. The past two years have weighed heavily on the world in a way no other event in recent history has. As communities begin to rebuild and grasp for a feeling of normalcy, the impact of the pandemic is becoming more apparent. Burnout is causing historic waves of resignations, leaving organizations under-staffed and over-worked. Loneliness, as a result of quarantine and travel restrictions, is leading people to prioritize their relationships in search of connection. After periods of time spent working from home, workers are hestitant to return to office–for personal and safety reasons. While all of these reactions are understandable, and even expected, leaders are left wondering how to keep up with this new normal. This is where the community care comes in.
So... why community and self-care?
1. Teaching was ranked as one of the 20 most stressful jobs by Glassdoor in 2021. 2. Over 40% of teachers report feeling high stress levels every day during the school year. 3. A recent RAND study found that stress was the most common reason educators left teaching–almost twice as insufficient pay. These issues are not new: a lack of resources, student behavioral problems, and standardized test expectations have contributed to this stress for years. These problems in combination with the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed many educators to their breaking point. The solution to these problems is not a quick or easy fix, but you can start with small steps to nurture the culture of your campus to prioritize mental health. Target the six core self-care needs for a better balanced team: mental + emotional, physical, spiritual, intellectual, practical, and social. Lay the foundation for a healthier, happier school.
