DEAR RIDERS, We still hadn’t come down from the high of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart in Harrogate when we heard our hometown was to become the host town for nine days of prestigious racing over the 2019 UCI Road World Championships. Fast forward to now and the preparations for September are already underway throughout Yorkshire. With the UCI making regular visits to the region, we’ve been selected to host them and their partners out on the bike as the Official UCI Cycling Tour Guides. We’re also pleased to be taking you out on parts of the route to challenge yourself against the parcours the pro will tackle later in the year. It’s going to be a long, hard day, but with a team of fellow riders around you and our support cars and ride leaders, we’re sure you’ll have an awesome day to remember.

Te a m Wo r k Cycling is a team sport. Unlike a sportive, you’ll be riding with fellow like-minded cyclists and enjoying the camaraderie out on the road. We’re setting out on a long, tough day. Just like the Pro peloton, we’ll need our fellow cycling comrades to get us around the route. Remember, every rider is different and will feel different from one hour to the next. You may be feeling strong at some points when a fellow group member is struggling - and vise versa. If you are feeling strong, don’t ride off the front; instead do some extra work on the front to tow your team around. Don’t peak too early and burn yourself out towards the latter part of the ride. If you are feeling tired don’t be scared to shout up or to sit in the group for a rest. Be prepared to work as a team. Each group will have a ride leader. However, they don’t have eyes in the back of their heads. If you find yourself towards the back of the group with a rider struggling to hold the wheel please shout up and don’t let the rider drop off the back. It’s a long day so conserve your energy.

Etiquette
We ride in groups two abreast where safe to do so, rotating around the group to give everyone a turn on the front. If you are unfamiliar with group riding you can watch this guide: http://bit.ly/2lrm4Xw If you would like to miss a turn on the front please rotate to the front of the group when it is your turn to do so. Then keep rotating off the front again calling change to indicate so. Do not attempt to move across the lines in the group unless safe to do so and indicating your intention. When on the front of the group, please do not ‘half wheel’ (ride slightly ahead of) the rider next to you. This will only push up the pace and make the ride uncomfortable for your fellow rider. If you are feeling particularly strong you will have plenty of opportunities to push yourself at other points on the ride.
Calls:
Change = rider changing on the front Car up = car approaching from ahead Car back = car approaching from behind Hole/Rock Left/Right = look out for this hazard Clear = safe to go (at a junction or roundabout). Don’t rely on the call. Always look for yourself. Slowing/Easy = slow down Stopping = the group is about to stop
Single out/line out = single file Mile off = Knock a mph off the pace Out = Move out for an obstruction Pass the calls up and down the group, so if you hear the call please repeat it.
Hand Signals:
Please point out any hazards in the road to your fellow cyclists. If you are uncomfortable taking your hands off the bars please use the calls above.
