A new way of thinking

T

HE Alan Megahey Learning Resource Centre (LRC) at Peterhouse Boys School, just outside Marondera, represents a new way of looking at education and interacting with information for senior school students from both the boys’ and girls’ schools. It was made possible by a very generous (around US$1.5 million) anonymous donation.

Alan Megahey was a former Rector of the school, responsible for, among other things, the founding of the Peterhouse Girls School and the formation of the Peterhouse Group of Schools. He was also well respected as a man of considerable intellectual and cultural abilities, a historian and an academic, as well as for his innovative approach to education. In addition he was an archivist with a significant collection of books and documents across a broad range of subjects. So it’s a fitting tribute to his legacy that the new LRC is part library but also a new and ground-breaking

way for students to access and engage with information in whatever form it might take - printed or electronic. It’s an interactive learning facility where students can still enjoy all the attributes that a traditional library has to offer – research books and current periodicals - but with the added bonus of internet and multi-media access.

In addition to interacting with the internet, students can collaborate with each other on a peer to peer basis and also engage with teachers. The school has installed the online version of Encyclopaedia Britannica on their computers which allows pupils to view an almost unlimited amount of up to date information. The LRC also has impressive multimedia facilities for watching video and PowerPoint computer presentations.

There’s a huge video monitor as well as state of the art sound equipment. And that’s not all – students are continuously monitored by CCTV cameras so that the supervisors are always in control of just what the pupils are looking at!

Originally intended as a kind of extension of the existing library it has become far more than that. It functions in a very different way to more conventional libraries which were always traditionally completely silent and rather stuffy and dusty spaces.

It was crucial at the outset of the project to establish, research and define the brief and what the building was to achieve. In order to get to this point the architects undertook extensive initial consultations with a diverse range of specialists - from IT (Neil Padmore of Frampol) to educational psychology (Occupational Psychologist Felicity Van de Ruit of Realise Africa). In addition, various lively and inclusive focus groups consisting of staff and pupils were consulted.

As a result of this research-led and collaborative process the LRC represents a new way of thinking about teaching and learning and is in essence an synthesis between a typical library and a computer centre, providing opportunities for both structured academic research as well as a more extramural curiosity in the world around us.

Whenever the brief is as unique as this one an important part of the initial design process is to get full support from the client on the design concept. Key to this was the production of accurate visualisations by the architects.

Architectural Assistant Tapiwa Mativenga modelled the building both inside and outside in photorealistic 3D, to give the client team an exact look and feel for the space, colours and ambience before committing to construction documentation.

To this end there are both formal seating for students to access the internet and do online research, as well as more comfortable and relaxed seating areas for reading, studying and collaborating in either small or large groups, or in public or private settings.

Books and periodicals can be checked out in the usual way with an advanced sentinel system to ensure that all material taken from the resource centre is carefully monitored.

When I was asked to come on board for the interiors of the Peterhouse Boys Megahey Media Centre, it was important for me to understand the brief of the project and the architectural concept from the start, to ensure a smooth transition and continuity. The concept was quite strong with the structural components and key fixtures contrasted in a vibrant palette of plums, sparkling lime, Monet blues and effervescent orange. The brief sensed it was important to run this scheme through the soft furnishings, but without the overall look becoming too garish.

Solid colours were used for the blocklike seating components with geometric design such as circular chairs and square modular sofas. These were broken by merging patterns and colours in elements between, such as ottomans and more organic style chairs. We also selected furniture compiled in separate modules so that the block colours could be alternated and compounded together in different combinations, creating a variable aspect to the overall design.

Overall I feel we achieved the look desired, where furniture and interior blends into the aesthetic structure of the building design.

MAIN FEATURE

The centre is designed on two levels to accommodate different needs for both individuals and groups. The ground floor is mostly made up of public spaces with an emphasis on collaborative and interactive endeavours. There’s the reception desk, shelving for books – in particular Alan Megahey’s archival collection – desks with computers and laptops and formal seating, as well as a sort of internal amphitheatre facing the large screen, used for presentations, functions and as a kind of lecture hall. The internal stepped or raked space has beanbags for informal comfortable seating.

The ground floor has a double-volume space extending from the south wall (made up mostly of huge glazed panels) towards the centre so it feels extra light, bright and airy, and the top floor balcony creates a gallery providing standing room so that more students and guests can overlook presentations.

The first floor of the building is assigned to more private spaces and is typically quieter and more secluded for serious solo studying, with access to a terrace overlooking the courtyard. There are even two ‘pod’ rooms upstairs which can be used for tutorials, presentations or small discussion groups. The two pod rooms were initially planned to be open balconies or verandahs but as the design developed it was decided to enclose the rooms to add an extra dimension to the study facilities.

There are also smaller offices for administration, storage and a career guidance office.

The interior design of the LRC makes use of a fairly simple palette of materials - unplastered brick, concrete, exposed steel roof beams and large expanses of glazing, particularly on the south wall and also forming a banister around the first floor gallery.

The Architects, Geoff Fox and Graham Cochrane from Architectural and Planning Studio, have used bright colours extensively in the design - partly to be visually stimulating and exciting and also to informally demarcate the different learning zones. The colours were carefully selected to enhance and draw focus to key elements. Whilst the external colours respectfully pay reference to the adjacent buildings, the bright palette chosen for the internal spaces is intended to de-institutionalise the learning environment and provide young minds a vibrant and inspiring space to explore mixed media. The book collections were highlighted with plum purple and apple green accent colours and further accentuated with hidden LED feature lighting to draw attention to the new and old book collection. The structural steel was painted sky blue and concrete load bearing columns, beams and terraces painted citrus orange to emphasise and bring focus to the architectonic elements.

MAIN FEATURE

The north side of the ground floor opens up to the existing outside amphitheatre which is an ideal space for open air theatrical productions. There was an existing bunker room adjacent to the amphitheatre intended as a backstage changing room but it was

completely impractical and seldom used. The building also functions to square off the Great Court creating a kind of quadrangle, bound by science classrooms on one side, the chapel on the opposite side, and the administration block at the top end.

W

hen first introduced to the plans for the Peterhouse Megahey Centre we were very excited. From previous Conference Centre installations we had a pretty good idea of what equipment would form the backbone, but with the addition of new technologies and updated equipment we had the chance to install a system that surpasses any other presentation system we’ve seen or heard of in the country.

The challenge with any large scale audio video system is making it easy to use. In the past functionality would be sacrificed for simplicity but that’s not the case any more.

The Megahey Centre is split into 7 different audio zones out of which three zones have televisions installed for presentations.

Presentations can be wirelessly sent to any or all of the television screens, from computers, tablets or smartphones (via WiFi), allowing for a tidier cable free environment, without any fuss over cable compatibility, damage and loss.

Audio and music sources can be played throughout selected zones, wirelessly streamed from personal devices or from hard wired sources from within the rack.

Microphones are available to be used for larger presentations with the system capable of running separate presentations

concurrently, splitting the microphones between zones, or extending a selected microphone’s audio throughout any or all of the seven audio zones.

In order to make this system easy to manage and control we employed an automation controller. This is a small robust purpose built computer processor that connects to every audio and video device within the system. The automation system we use allows us to, in the Megahey Centre’s case, design a webpage that runs on the librarians PC - and allows the librarian to control each input, output and source. This control page can also run on smartphones and tablets, which is how many of our clients with our multi-room audio video systems installed into their homes choose to operate their systems.

Designing the page ourselves means we can eliminate pages of unnecessary buttons for features or inputs that are irrelevant and boil the control page down to the basic essentials. A system that would otherwise require a manual and hours of training to use can now be controlled by anyone who has the control page on the PC pointed out to them.

MAIN FEATURE

Part of the brief to the architect from the Peterhouse Steering Group, (Headed by Rector Mr. Howard Blackett, with notable direction from Board Member Mr. Chris Paterson) reads, “The new building should be an appropriate 21st Century design and respectful of its position as the bridging building which completes the Great Court.

The Fieldsend Hall, the Science Block, and the Gibbs Court, all marked considerable Architectural advancements on the original 1950s school as built: the Megahey Centre should represent a further advance.”

These aspects of the brief needed serious consideration. The new building needed to be both modern and progressive while still blending in seamlessly with the existing older structures. Fox has achieved this difficult

dichotomy admirably – the new building echoes the existing buildings facing onto the Great Court in its use of granite cladding and a somewhat restrained facade made up of alternating granite, painted and plastered brick work, and open balconies.

The south facade is altogether more contemporary as it doesn’t need to relate to other existing buildings. Large glazed windows provide a view towards the Wedza mountains and allow for gentle light to permeate the open plan interior. There’s also an outside paved area to allow guests for functions to spill outside and to tie the building into the landscape. On the west side blinds help to control the afternoon sun flooding into the pod rooms which overlook the old library.

Work on the site began in early 2016 with main contractors Rio Douro Construction and was completed on target towards the end of the same year, overseen by the consultant team of architects (APS), Quantity Surveyor (Matt Dove Associates), Structural and Civil Engineers (Dickie and Kunaka), Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (ASMEC) as well as Mr. Jason Driscoll, the Projects Manager for the Peterhouse Group of Schools, who has an intimate insight into the history of the school and the related infrastructure.

The result is an exemplary and groundbreaking learning centre that will change the way that students will be educated in the future.

IMBABWE has recently passed legislation which requires all junior schools to offer (at least) two years of Early Childhood Development (ECD) classes for children from 3 to 5 years of age before they first attend primary school.

Ostensibly this is to prepare children culturally, emotionally, intellectually and physically for their onward educational journey through Grade 1 to Grade 7 and then on to senior school. The policy is also intended to help teachers and caregivers identify early on any problems which children may encounter – dyslexia, attention deficit disorders, anti-social tendencies and so forth.

In line with the official government policy ECD schools have been springing up across most of the suburbs of Harare and other city centres. Often these ECDs are simply set up in partially converted residential properties which were not originally designed to accommodate a large number of small children. They are also frequently more like crèches where working parents can drop off their children during the day – day care centres that focus only on the children’s physical needs and neglect their educational skills or their social or emotional development.

St John’s ECD Centre has a specifically designed building as well as a tailor-made curriculum to prepare the boys for the St John’s Prep School and later for the St John’s College which are leading educational facilities in the country. There are currently 3 – soon to be 4 – classes for children from ages of around three and a half years old up to around five and a half years old.

While the emphasis is on having fun and nurturing creativity and independence in the boys, there’s also some more serious learning taking place at the same time. Each week’s programme is carefully based around a specific theme – for example one week was dedicated to ‘mini beasts’ and in particular to bees. Children learn the features of bees; that they are flying insects that live in hives and help to pollinate our food crops. They learn counting skills by counting the bees’ six legs; they learn about 37

patterns and colours by looking at the black and yellow stripes on the insects; they learn new vocabulary – the bees’ wings are ‘transparent’; they learn what is referred to ‘knowledge and understanding of the world’, or in other words ‘science’, when they examine the bees’ honeycombs, and the theme can be endlessly developed into interactive games and other imaginative activities.

Painting is encouraged to nurture creativity as well as spatial and colour awareness and to help develop fine motor skills. But even the fun painting process is educational – the boys learn to clean up their paints and paper and put their brushes and paints away when they’ve finished, fostering their independence as well as a sense of responsibility.

The ECD building is carefully designed to enhance and accommodate this kind of teaching and learning. Each classroom has a dedicated painting area with large worktops at a convenient height for the little ones to use. There’s also a sink and a tap for washing up both themselves and their brushes and tools and there’s built in shelving underneath for storing the related paraphernalia. Each classroom also has a wall of desk/work space with separate sections relating to things like literacy or numeracy and storage above.

There are two rows of windows across this wall – one at an unusual low height so that the children can see outside when they’re working, and another row of higher windows above the shelving for air circulation.

Tables and chairs are set up in the central part of the room so children can work in small shared groups. They also have a wall of aluminium sliding doors opening up to the exterior of the building as well as sliding doors opening onto the central courtyard, so there’s a good indoor/outdoor flow. They also each have whiteboards for drawing and writing, projectors for multimedia presentations and shelving for storing books and comics and related materials.

Every classroom has an attached bathroom for the boys with the tiniest toilets, urinals and wash hand basins on a Lilliputian scale.

(Boys are encouraged to use the bathrooms unaided – although supervised – to promote their sense of independence.) And each classroom has locker space for the children’s backpacks and personal items.

The central courtyard is decked out in astro-turf so it’s low maintenance (and less dirt) and can be used all year round. It’s surrounded by extra wide verandahs so the children can use the outdoor space whether it’s too sunny or too wet for comfort. And in addition each classroom has its own small outdoor terrace facing away from the central

courtyard.Outside there are scented plants like lavender and pelargonium to inspire the children’s interest in plants, a small vege garden where children can learn about growing food and where our food comes from, by planting and nurturing and harvesting.

There’s even a small enclosure for rabbits and tortoises so the children can learn about

caring for animals. The classrooms also have small ongoing learning projects that include growing silkworms, keeping fish and caring for hamsters. And in addition there’s an outside sandpit for the children to play in and jungle gyms or playground equipment purposely designed to promote the children’s physical strength and develop their gross motor skills.

MAIN FEATURE

The ECD Centre was originally an older house which was a component of staff housing for the group of schools but seemed ideally situated to be re-configured and repurposed. It was a solidly built three bedroomed house of brick under tiles but set within a rather overgrown garden with a swimming pool. The pool was filled in, mostly for the safety of the children, and the garden needed to be cleared and cleaned up. Just clearing the garden and preparing the site took around six weeks.

The project was designed by Stone Beattie Studio – a well renowned local listed architectural studio run and managed by husband and wife team Penny Stone and Richard Beattie. Together with Mike Mackenzie, Headmaster of the Preparatory andinJanine TORAGEMARTSchool is located the newDavies, Pomona Industrial Park on the corner of Harare Drive and Alpes Road in Vainona. It’s a new to Zimbabwe and it embodies the first, and so far the only, state of the art, high security, storage facility in the Head of the ECDconcept Centrethat’s they conducted extensive country. DGEWATER VILLAS is an upmarket complex of eight separate prestigious townhouses situated on Piers Road directly opposite Sam Levy’s Village in Borrowdale.

PROPERTY FEATURE

There’s also a 1,400 W inverter system that is connected to the water pumps and the internal power points as no generators are used after 10.00 pm. These facilities make the home completely self reliant in terms of both water and power supply.

The main front door is sheltered by a small arched portico and opens directly to an imposing double volume entrance hall with a beautiful staircase sweeping up to the first floor. To the left is a study area which is ideal as a home office or could be converted to a second cosy lounge or even an additional bedroom. To the right behind the staircase is a small guest bathroom. Directly in front is the large open plan reception area with views out to the verandah and the garden beyond through big aluminium and glass sliding doors. Clean and simple pale grey ceramic floor tiles link the foyer, the lounge and the adjacent open plan dining room – also with doors opening out to the verandah. Both the lounge and the dining room have working fireplaces to warm up the spaces during chilly winter evenings.

The modern kitchen leads directly off the dining room and is fitted out with Caesarstone countertops and all the modern appliances including a gas range (convenient for power cuts) a dishwasher and loads of storage space. There’s also a pantry and a scullery. The kitchen has the potential to be opened up to the dining room and lounge to make the downstairs completely open plan.

SUPPORTING THE FUTURE

B

ETA Holdings held their second Students Architectural Competition this year. The brief was for students to design a building for an Institute for the Built Environment sector. The proposed site would be Borrowdale and the facility was to cater for the various consultants in that sector including: architects, engineers, quantity and surveyors, realtors, urban and regional designers and environmental management.

Students had to incorporate the Beta Clay Brick and Beta Concrete Roof Tiles as economic and aesthetically pleasing building materials, whilst focusing on environmental sustainability as well as green-building technology of the future.

After months of ideation, submission and judgement, the winners were announced at a premier gala in Harare. The event had a very good build up towards the presentation ceremony where the top architectural student would clinch the $3000 prize and the prestigious Vernon Mwamuka Floating Trophy – so named after the late visionary architect. All the students were from NUST University, an institution whose establishment credits the likes of Mr Mwamuka, who was also its designer. Mr Musa Sangase, who is the president of the Southern Africa Clay Brick Association, graced the occasion as guest of honour and commended the wonderful work Beta Bricks is doing to inspire and excite young minds as the second largest high quality brick-maker in Southern Africa.

DESIGN EDUCATION

The winner was Tichaona Gondo, who haltingly expressed his gratitude towards Beta Holdings as well as his mentors and fellow students. The first and second runner up were Tatenda Jambaya and Yamurai Chibayanzara respectively, a commendation awarded to Takudzwa Musonza. All the participants received shields as Beta Holdings felt they had done really stellar work overall, making the judging very difficult.

The adjudication was presided over by Zimbabwe Institute of Architects and was represented on the night by its President, Architect Arthur Matondo, who applauded the level of skill the students had shown. He remarked how the country’s architectural future in Zimbabwe is clearly in safe hands.

Professor Gudyanga from the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary education, who was part of the proceedings, told the young architectural students that one day they could be called by the government to design buildings similar to their concepts that are environmentally sound and futuristic.

VERNON BENELE Mwamuka, the first black architect, still stands out as one of the foremost and most prominent architects Zimbabwe ever produced.

In his architectural portfolio, he has to his name the imposing Southampton Life Centre (now ZB Life Towers), Construction House, Kopje Plaza, Old Mutual Centre, the Four Ways Mall in Johannesburg and the Joina City (Harare) which became the largest city development in years.

Other significant projects that brought him praise and respect include Africa University (Mutare),the National University of Science and Technology (Bulawayo), Harare Domestic Airport, Bulawayo International Airport, FOURWAYS

MALL in Johannesburg (South Africa) the School of Hotel and Catering (Bulawayo) and a chain of post offices strewn across the country.

All these completed commissions attest to Mwamuka’s creative identity. His works have left a very unique aesthetic impact on the immediate environment of the structures revitalising the surrounding urban expanse as in the case of the Kopje Plaza (West of Harare’s skyline). The Kopje Plaza changed the sky of the Kopje area where a number of neglected buildings had become an eyesore and a sign of urban decay.

HIS modern, quirky home was originally designed by another architect and then extensively modified – in line with the owners’ requests – by architect Victor Utria (from Fleet Utria Architecture).

Utria has undertaken a number of residential projects, although he is perhaps best known for his large scale commercial designs, like the Causeway Post Office (with the huge cut out square in the middle) and the Runhare House building (with the fallen over pillars and small amphitheatre in front). Utria’s designs tend to incorporate unusual and thought provoking elements that blend basic structural and functional designs with whimsical, almost sculptural elements.

This beautiful home illustrates many of Utria’s design signatures. It has over sized circular windows, walls of glass bricks – a material used extensively at the Causeway Post Office – a spiral staircase with a central column topped by a spherical light, long views through the open plan spaces and several skylights which transform ordinary spaces into design features. His designs also tend to combine austere, modernist, geometric shapes with softer curved structures.

The main entrance to the house illustrates a number of these design features. A small square portico in front of the main entrance is basically a concrete slab supported on one corner by a substantial, fat pillar. Two sides of the slab are attached to the main structure of the house and thinner exposed pillars can be seen both side supporting the first floor slab and the roof, so that the structural elements are clearly visible and you can see how the house is put together. Either side of the front door are blocks of glass bricks – on one side in a sort of inverted L-shape and on the other side in a stepped design. Cut into the centre of the portico roof slab is a large glass skylight which makes the heavy slab lighter and more delicate.

The door is a small sculptural artwork in itself. It’s made up of different thicknesses of solid timber in a layered Z-shape that swivels on a central vertical hinge. One side of the door opening has a small clear glass panel set into the architrave while the opposite side has a large frosted glass panel in a geometric design combining straight lines and curves.

Above the entrance on the first floor of the building four huge circular windows soften the almost brutalist slab and pillar structure with the hard edged flat roof parapet visible above.

This sculptural, architectural theme is echoed just inside the front door with a dropped ceiling section – painted in a different colour – with a curvy edge, which hangs above layers of S-shape sliding wooden doors concealing a storage space. The exterior walls of square glass bricks, which allow natural light into the entrance hall, are set opposite round openings within the interior walls, as well as low dividing walls topped off with more glass bricks. The low walls and circular openings allow extensive views of the interior which run almost the entire length of the building. Simple ceramic floor tiles which cover most the ground floor also add to a clean, uncluttered look that emphasises the very generously proportioned spaces.

HOME DESIGN

Just to the right of the front entrance hall a spiral staircase sweeps up to the first floor. In front of the hall is a large dining room with big windows opening out to the large paved terrace and the pool and garden beyond.

The dining room is separated from the main lounge by a low partition wall also with a stepped glass brick design. A double sided fireplace heats both the dining room and the lounge. Down along the open plan passageway is an additional smaller TV lounge which is more intimate and cosy.

Across the hallway from the dining room is an open plan kitchen, recently renovated and refitted by Romeo kitchens, in a sleek classic black and white scheme with a movable centre island, a breakfast counter and chrome stools. The double door fridge is hidden behind cupboard doors that blend with the cabinets, the dishwasher is set under the counter and the ovens are set into the cabinetry so the kitchen has a sleek, almost minimalist look in keeping with the overall architectural design, although it’s superbly equipped for catering and entertaining on a large scale.

At the owners’ request Utria changed part of the internal layout of the house so that what was originally designed as parking garages on the east side of the house was converted to a self contained guest wing

overlooking the swimming pool, with en suite bathroom. The pool, now in front of the house, was planned to be at the back of the house where the current garages and parking spaces are. Where the garages are now was originally designed as another lounge with the master bedroom above. What was intended to be the master bedroom is now their son’s room with a private bathroom and covered balcony.

Utria opened up the front of the house more adding large sliding aluminium doors and windows. He also extended the front verandah or deck area so that it runs almost the full width of the house and looks over the pool deck which is set a few feet lower down the sloping front garden. He also added the triangular shaped balcony which leads off the master suite upstairs and looms over the verandah like the prow of a ship.

Upstairs there’s the son’s room, the master suite, two additional bedrooms that share a bathroom, as well a smaller lounge entertainment area and even space for a home gym set up. The upstairs lounge area is dominated by the spiral staircase which has a central circular column rising up through the centre and topped with a spherical light.

There’s another square skylight over the lounge. Unlike the ground floor where most of the floors are ceramic tiles, the upstairs is mostly carpeted (except for the open plan lounge) keeping it warmer in winter and giving it a softer feel.

Liz Howes from Howes and Homes was recently consulted to give the home an update. Although built nearly 20 years ago the home is still structurally strikingly modern but the exterior colour scheme of neutral beiges and creams had become a little dated. Howes and Homes repainted the whole exterior – including the boundary walls – in more contemporary shades of greys and blues, which also serve to highlight some of the architectural features like the pillars and the balcony railings. Part of the deck around the pool had collapsed caused a tree falling onto it so Howes and Homes repaired pool surround.

Inside the house parts of the downstairs were refreshed and repainted while most of the upstairs was repainted and a new ceiling and new lights were installed in the lounge space. Two upstairs bathrooms were renovated with new fittings – baths, showers and

tiles – but the master en suite bathroom was totally transformed.

There had previously been a rather awkward passageway to the bathroom which was totally demolished. In its place now is a sliding door of wood and frosted glass, designed by the owner and made up by Howes and Homes’ carpenter. There’s a small modesty wall concealing the toilet and bidet but the rest of the bathroom is spacious and airy and three new windows were added to make the room much lighter. There’s a huge glass shower cubicle and a free standing oval bath as well as double vanity basins set into a black granite counter top. Pale tiles and plain white walls give the new bathroom a luxury spa look.

No doubt this stunning home will still be a shining example of great modern design for at least another 20 more years.

Parallel Nippon: Contemporary Japanese Architecture 1996-2006

T the National Gallery of Zimbabwe was a travelling architecture exhibition organised by the Japan Foundation.

This exhibition was made in cooperation with the Architectural Institute of Japan. It focuses on Japanese architecture of 1996-2006, with the aim of conveying accurate picture of Japan’ s architectural profession in those ten years, during which it generated new forms of value through fine-tuned designs adapted to the evolving demands of the times.

HE bedroom is without question among the most popular rooms in the house and the apartment. After all, this is the place where you should really relax and unwind.
