PUBLISHER’S MEMO HE 14th Issue of Structure and Design is a celebration of space and special design. Once again, we fulfil our mandate to bring insight on technical and aesthetic aspects of architecture, engineering and design.

Our featured space this month is the new Halstead Builders Express outlet that has opened on the corner of Alpes Road and Harare Road to cater to the Northern Suburbs of Harare.

The spatial building complex is a work of art and the landscaping surrounding the building demonstrates a marked degree of craftsmanship.

This issue also features Superstructures, the leading steel building specialists in the Southern African region. HALSTED’S NEW BORROWDALE BRANCH Retail showroom and contractors’ delight alsted Builders Express (also incorporating Halsted Timber and Trusses) has just opened their brand new branch on the 1st of June this year. It’s situated at the corner of Alpes Road and Harare Drive in the rapidly growing business and retail district, which includes a number of other new developments, and promises to become a new shopping destination for Harare residents. (See Structure and Design issue 3 featuring the Storagemart project.) The location is ideally suited to serve customers from the northern suburbs, while it’s still conveniently accessible for home owners and shoppers from Westgate and Marlborough across to Greystone Park and Glen Lorne.

The land was acquired around four years ago with future investment and development in mind and with the foresight that the area would soon be subject to rapid growth. The initial plans were fairly detailed including the different retail areas within the shop to ensure a good flow of foot traffic, extensive storage space, and the coffee shop and garden centre. Working closely with Turner and Townsend – project managers and quantity surveyors – the rough drawings were consolidated to fit the budget.

The original plans were for a warehouse of 150m x 50m and were revised downwards to 96m x 46m of which 96m x 26m is dedicated retail space, while the rest is storage.

Currently there’s around 1,000 sq/m of covered storage for a wide range of stock like timber, tiles and water sensitive powders like cement. The original plans also had to be revised to comply with safety regulations for the fire sprinkler system. Included in the main structure is 90 sq/m of office space set on a mezzanine floor above the front entrance.

Final design specifications were handed out an 11 page brief to tender. Architextural Spatial Designs were chosen for final conceptualization and finished drawings. The team at Architextural Spatial Designs was led

by Bruce Rowlands with Gemma Temlett as the supervising architect and Connor McCabe responsible for design detailing.

Rowlands enjoys working on the designs for warehouses as they present an unusually large-scale canvas to play with. To clad this fairly standard warehouse with a functional yet appealing “skin”, Rowlands limited the design palette to a few select elements; Chromadek sheeting, clear sheeting, huge timber panels, shade cloth and signage panels. These were all composed into a facade that conveys a sense of uncluttered clarity.

Despite the simplicity of its appearance, the facade design had to discretely serve several different purposes. The white Chromadek was used to visually soften the massiveness of the structure against the skyline and help to reduce solar heat gain.

The white is contrasted with the charcoal Chromadek, which being less attention attracting, was chosen to help hide the more unsightly loading areas. The timber panels use the familiar texture of saw cut planks to broadcast the nature of the building as a “hardware store”. These timber panels grandly announce the entrances and provide backing for the huge signage. However their less obvious but equally important role is to screen from view the ugly necessities such as plumbing pipework, aircon units, back-up water tanks, ablution blocks and ranks of shopping trolleys. The clear sheeting panels illuminate the internal spaces, significantly reducing the power load on the lighting. The shade cloth panels create a green-house over the garden centre.

Particular attention was paid to the design of the Garden Centre and the coffee shop – Freshly Ground. Large warehouse and retail spaces can be quite impersonal and cold so the garden section and the coffee shop help to make the space more friendly and appealing. It also means that families can make their shopping into a more interesting and fun experience. The interior of the coffee shop – designed by Debby Hart - is fun and funky and slightly eccentric with a ceiling made up of open umbrellas and easy chairs upholstered in ethnic print fabric.

There’s also a very special Dulux Paint section within the shop which has an eyecatching and colourful display area. Here you’ll find a huge selection of paints in every colour you can think of, as well as varnishes and timber care, roof and stoep paints, and all related painting equipment.

Because Halsteds caters for individual DIY customers as well as for larger building contractors there are separate entrances designed for both types of shoppers.

They’ve also provided convenient parking space in front of the shop for families or individual shoppers and a large paved area at the back designed for contractors’ heavy vehicles with bigger loads. Contractors have a separate gate and loading bays that don’t inconvenience smaller scale customers.

Halsteds is by no means new to doing business in Zimbabwe with their first trading business opened in Bulawayo in 1897 under the name Halsted and Webb and later Halsted Brothers. For many years the main branches of Halsted Builders Express and Halsted Timbers was located in Workington and dealt mostly with building and plumbing contractors. The Msasa branch was opened in 2014 and was their first venture into retail stores specifically designed to cater for home owners and DIY enthusiasts.

They also have branches in Bulawayo, Mutare, Masvingo, and Kwekwe.They now stock around 17,000 different products including building materials, plumbing and electrical goods, tools, safety wear and gardening equipment, and even home appliances. They also stock a range of solar powered equipment and generators for alternative power supply. In fact they have everything building and home related for the individual home owner or the biggest building contractors.

Our steel structures are fabricated in Harare, Zimbabwe, in our 6000m2 facility which is serviced by overhead cranes and forklifts, with standby generator backup for power outages. We have the cutting, welding and jig equipment to manufacture fabricated I - beams, castellated beams, heavy rolled plate structural tubes, conventional angle iron lattice trusses and portal I-beam structures.

All structures are exported with a COMESA and/or SADC Certificate where appropriate. Given the ever-changing steel supply and pricing within the region, we are flexible and quick to take up new, more innovative designs using the most cost effective materials available at the time. We see this as a challenge and embrace the

experiences and lessons learned from different fabrication methods and materials.

Installation and erection of our structures is undertaken by our skilled steel erection and roofing teams using our own cranes and equipment. If the installation is to be done by the customer, we place a skeleton crew on site to assist with understanding the installation plans and component identification, along with early identification of possible errors or omissions so that work stoppage is kept to a minimum. (Every single component is individually marked and gridreferenced on the installation plans by our detailing software)

With our in house Tekla BIM (www.teklabimsight.com) detailing facilities and quality control procedures, we stand out in our industry, making Superstructures the first choice for your fabrication project.

This highly sophisticated program enables us to visualise the entire steel structure as a 3D model and because it is based on parameterised technology, any subsequent changes once the fabrication has started may be done relatively quickly. A 3D model can be viewed on any computer and approved by the client before fabrication commences. What is more, a computerised model allows elimination of any material

clashes. Potential design issues can be easily visualised, explained and resolved reducing project costs.

When we generate quotations, the proposed structure would have already been drawn and a bill of quantities generated so that our quotes are accurate and firm for the duration of the project without any surprises half-way through the build. If there are any changes to be made these are treated as variation orders at agreed rates used on the initial quote. We believe in an open book policy so everyone can be on the same page and you are able

to accurately cost any alterations you may want to make.Recently we have become involved in building shopping centres in Mozambique and Zambia.

These are significantly more complex than typical warehousing where attention to detail is paramount and as such we have become quality conscious and pay particular attention to ensuring first class installation and finishing. We guarantee that Superstructure sheds are finished to the highest standard.

THE NEW SEAMLOK 745 CONCEALED FIX ROOFING SYSTEM FTER 25 years of roofing experience using locally available roofing, we decided that there were better systems and have subsequently invested in the latest concealed fix roofing machine. This roofing system is ideally suited to the larger span buildings.

WHY SHOULD YOU USE THE SEAMLOK 745?

• The roofing fasteners do not penetrate the roof sheeting, thereby significantly reducing the potential for leaks especially when the roof is getting older.

• The Rolling machine is a mobile unit enabling the Roofing coil to be rolled on site. This means that each roof panel is rolled to the length of the roof i.e. if your entire roof is 24m wide by 30m long we would then cut the roof panels to 24m length. There are no horizontal overlaps between the sheets and subsequent wastage and galvanic rust between the overlaps. There is also less chance of the sheeting getting damaged in transit to site.

• The greatest advantage of a standing seam metal roof is that the seam is higher than the roof panels and the seam is mechanically crimped as the sheeting is laid, further reducing the chances of leaks.

• Due to the nature of this type of roofing system even with a 2 degree pitch the roof will still perform better than more common profiles.

• We can roll coil from both South Africa and offshore in thicknesses ranging from 0,5mm— 0,6mm. This enables you to choose your colours from Galvanised Steel, Zinc alume, Chromadek or Colour Bond.

• Roof sheets accurately cut to length by cnc guillotine.

Agristructures is at the forefront of local poultry house supply. We have supplied the Poultry sector with buildings for over 20 years, these include various chicken houses from broiler houses to laying houses, insulated hatchery buildings, abattoirs, offices, workshops and storage sheds.

We work very closely with both Zimbabwean and regional experts so that we can offer the best possible structures as cost effectively as possible. Our chicken houses in particular have been designed to complement Zimbabwe’s climate and economy, thereby saving you on installation and operational costs wherever possible, while still offering a first class product. We have designed our buildings so that we can work seamlessly with the customer during the installation. If you have a tight time deadline, we have designed the bases so that we can install the footings in unprepared ground, then you can quickly and easily prepare your slab and perimeter wall around our bases, giving you accurate levels and building lines.

While you are completing the floor and brickwork, we will be fabricating the structure. Once we have finished the fabrication we will lift the structure so that the build is completed as quick as possible.

Our buildings are also designed so that the curtains and bird-proofing fit in seamlessly with your brickwork.

We support our roofing sheets on fabricated lattice purlins. We use lattice purlins because they are very strong and easy to clean, and there are no channels or recesses where dirt and disease may gather when regularly washed down. If you look at the shadows in the picture opposite you will notice that we have also carefully positioned the purlins so that you may hang your droppers and feeders off them, saving money when outfitting your houses.

uperstructures and sister company Agristructures fall under the umbrella of The Steel Building Company (Pvt) Ltd. Agristructures, as the name suggests, specialises in catering for the agricultural industry, in particular providing storage, sorting sheds and drying tunnels for tobacco growers. Other applications for their steel buildings include massive storage sheds for farm implements like tractors and harvesters, workshops, greenhouses for horticulture, and poultry sheds. Previously known as Car Guard Construction, Agristructures was formed in 1984, so they have over 30 years experience in building steel structures. In 2006 Agristructures diversified into supplying steel structures for the mining industry including plant workshops, material stores, administration buildings and laboratory buildings. They have completed several successful projects for First Quantum Minerals and other mining companies in the DRC and Zambia.

Their latest highly successful structure is the 14,000 sq. m. warehouse situated at 41 James Martin Road in Workington, Harare - a private equity investment managed by INVESCI Asset Management (Pvt) Ltd on behalf of a number of local Pension Funds. The warehouse was officially opened in June this year and took around 13 months to complete, including the demolition of the existing offices and workshops on the site. This was a complete turnkey project with Superstructures managing every aspect of the build, including the initial ground works and the concrete floor slab, and sub-contracting other service providers for the plumbing, the electrics and the lighting, and the fire sprinkler system and office fit out.

The warehouse employed Superstructure’s new Seamlok 745 concealed fix roofing system which is a ground-breaking innovation for the construction industry in Zimbabwe.

(Currently Superstructures is the only company to have a machine based out of Zimbabwe.) The Seamlok 745 system has a number of important advantages, most importantly the concealed fastening system means that there are no holes punched through the roofing sheets for the fasteners.

Secondly, the currently used system of fixing roof sheets with conventional “pierced fix” fasteners into the underlying lip channel purlins locks the roof sheets to the purlins. The roof sheets expand at a different rate to the purlins, and the underlying structure supporting the roof, and something has to give, so the holes for the fasteners get bigger and/or the fasteners come loose, inevitably leading to leaks as the building ages.

This is not apparent on our old angle iron purlin structures with hook bolt roof fasteners as the hook bolts could move with the roof allowing the roof the expand independently from the structure. The roof sheets can move up to 1mm per metre so over a large span the movement can be quite significant.

On longer spans, the concealed fastening system uses sliding clips so that the roofing sheet can expand over the purlins freely to allow for the contraction and expansion of the sheets at different rates to the structure in response to weather conditions.

The system employs a mobile rolling machine so that roof sheets are rolled on site to the required length. The rolled forming mill can make sheets up to 60m in length so there are no horizontal joins where shorter sheets would normally overlap. This method reduces wastage and overlaps. The machine can roll steel roofing coil from South Africa or from other international suppliers in thicknesses ranging from 0,47mm to 0,8mm using galvanised steel, Chromadek (manufactured

by ArcelorMittal), Colour Bond or Zincalume. Zincalume has a zinc and aluminium coating which makes it up to 20% more resistant to corrosion than galvanised steel. This makes it ideal for use in coastal regions where the sea salt causes oxidation. Roof sheets are accurately cut by a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) guillotine reducing the chances of rust forming on the ends of the sheet, cutting the sheets with an angle grinder burns the galvanised protective coating which is then susceptible to corrosion.

The side laps are mechanically joined as the roof is laid, using a crimping machine that runs along the two sheets. The crimping machine creates a 360 degree double lock seam that is extremely weatherproof, with the concealed fixing clips are folded within the seam. The seam is higher than the roof panels and the profile has deep troughs so the finished roof can cope with higher volumes of water with no chance of leaks. Because the sheets are so water tight the pitch of the roof can be significantly reduced - even down to 3 degrees over 60m spans – and still perform better than most conventional roofing systems. This results in further savings on material costs and also reduces the height of the apex on large span structures.

Another innovation in the design of the warehouse at 41 James Martin is that there are no skylights cut into the roof sheets.

Conventional skylight panels have a tendency to leak, deteriorate faster than the roof sheets and are responsible for 90% of serious or fatal roof accidents.

The 41 James Martin roof has a central ridge of translucent sheets that runs down the length of the building. The translucent sheets are UV stabilised polycarbonate. From the ridge the roof sheets extend outward on both sides for 15m to a vertical section of more translucent sheets which are 1,2m high. The roof was deliberately designed to have a step in the middle of the roof slope with translucent sheets fitted to the vertical section allowing for good natural internal lighting. By doing this there are no translucent sheets within the roof as is the conventional practice.

where it meets another vertical section of translucent sheeting that runs around the whole building. Thus the interior has more than adequate natural light. This pioneering architectural design has been exclusively developed by Superstructures and is a new concept in Zimbabwe for roofing and lighting solutions.

Interestingly, from the outside the translucent sheets are almost exactly the same colour as the Chromadek cladding so they blend together seamlessly.

All of Superstructure’s steel buildings are fabricated in modular form in their 6,000 sq m workshop in Willowvale in Harare. They have the cutting, welding and jig equipment to manufacture fabricated I-beams (taper flange plate buildings), castellated or cellular beams, heavy rolled plate structural tubes, lattice trusses and portal I-Beam structures. Installation and erection of their structures is undertaken by skilled and experienced teams using Superstructures’ own cranes and equipment. If customers want to

OMEO KITCHENS is a family owned business that started way back in 1994. Initially they rented a small factory in Msasa, Harare and had a modest showroom in the front and their factory behind. In 1997 as the factory started to supply other customers Romeo Kitchens split from the factory to become a standalone fitted furniture design company focusing on top quality home fittings and bespoke cabinetry, opening their 1st independent showroom in 1998 also in Msasa. In 2002 they opened a new showroom in Lusaka, Zambia. So from simple beginnings the company has grown to extend across two countries and they have even successfully undertaken projects in neighbouring DRC and Mozambique. They have at last count fitted over 8,000 kitchens over their 24 year history.

Romeo Kitchens offers a full service which includes designing, manufacturing and installing custom made fitted furniture of extremely high quality. Their main focus is on kitchens, but they also supply built-in cupboards for bedrooms, dressing rooms, vanities and cabinets for bathrooms, as well as fitted TV cabinets, bars, home studies and office furniture. Romeo will project manage your entire kitchen remodelling project, initially designing the space and then working closely with electricians, plumbers, tilers and other contractors ensuring that you get the kitchen installation of your dreams without any hassles. All of Romeo’s cabinetry can be supplied in a wide variety of different finishes, colours and styles from classic traditional to modern and minimalist. The Zimbabwe Agricultural Society(Z.A.S) is set to construct a $100 million Hotel and Convention Centre with a seating capacity of 15 000 guests at their Business Hub in Harare.

Addressing stakeholders at the launch of the Convention Centre and Hotel today, ZAS Chief Executive Officer, Dr Anxious Masuka said the development follows the City of Harare Local Development Plan Review No 42 of 2006’s allowance for showground re-zoning to Public Buildings.

“The City of Harare Local Development Plan Review No 42 of 2006, undertaken at the instigation of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society brought vitality to showgrounds as they were known then by transforming them into an Exhibition Park.

“This followed the LDP42’s allowance foe showground rezoning to Public Buildings(Other and the designation of a commercial area.The commercial area is now the site of the fuel station and the proposed shopping mall.

“That Local Development Plan is what has brought us here,in that plan we said this society will be so relevant to the economic development of Zimbabwe specifically to Harare’s attainment of the world class city status to an extent that we had to look for something that is sufficiently magnanimous in outlook and would meet with current and future expectations,” he said.

He added that the Convention Centre will double the current sitting capacity of the biggest convention centre in Zimbabwe.

“This is why the Zimbabwe Convention Centre was mooted, it will comprise a 15 000 sitter auditorium, just to highlight that the current sitting capacity of the biggest convention centre in Zimbabwe is somewhere in the region of about 7000,” said Masuka.

In an interview with 263Chat on the sidelines of the launch, Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing July Moyo welcomed the development saying it came at time when there is a shortage of

hotel rooms in the country.

“The build up environment is changing in Zimbabwe, hotel and conferencing has to move faster,hotel rooms in Zimbabwe are in short supply in the country and we believe that what the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society is doing changes the skyline for Harare as well as the agricultural show business.

“We have been talking to them together with the mayor to say all the way from the Kopje to the residential areas here if there was a concept to design properly done which is futuristic, it can start telling us how Harare is going to develop outside our normal CBD area where we want to de-congest the CBD areas of our cities and this is why we are doing this,” said Moyo.

Mayor Cllr Ben Manyenyeni and the Minister of Local Government Hon. July Moyo officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Zimbabwe Convention Centre at the Harare Showgrounds on Wednesday.

The centre will comprise of a hotel, 15000 seated conference centre and a business hub.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony Moyo said: With the demands in Harare, hotel and conferencing has to change even faster.

Hotel rooms in the country are in short supply right now and we believe that what Zimbabwe Agricultural society is doing here, changes the skyline in the Harare city area as well as the Agricultural show business. And we believe that infrastructure development is a catalyst for the development of the country and when the president says Zimbabwe is open for business, that business cannot exist unless we as Zimbabweans investing in infrastructure which includes your built-up environment, roads, sewerage, water systems including your electricity… We have been conversing together with the mayor to say all the way from the Kopje to residential areas, if there was a concept design properly done which is futuristic, which wil start telling us how Harare is going to develop outside our normal CBD area.

In as far as investment to assist with the yawning infrastructure investment deficit gap, said loans, foreign direct investment and resource mobilisation through vehicles such as pension funds had not happening for the past 15 to 20 years, Zimbabwe is now looking at foreign and domestic investors to deal with the gap. Moyo added that the foreign investor was a critical component in mobilising foreign currency so that projects would move faster.

The last hotel went up maybe 25 years ago, so you can imagine the gap that we have to catch up on.So as a city we are an enabler and a facilitator. We are so delighted to be in partnership with the Agricultural Society on this particular one. But we also invite others to fill up this gap. The conferencing opportunities for this country and this city in particular are so high, they can only be met by supporting services.

Moyo said his government has needed to intervene in upgrading roads in cities.

That is not to say the cities have naturally failed but because delayed maintenance is capitalised.

The upgrading of infrastructure is critical to attracting investors, he said.

As for where the the investment has come from: In the old days we used to rely on World Bank, IMF, African Development Bank or on bilaterals such as DFID for infrastructure support, but now the private sector is also coming in large numbers.

Manyenyni said: The trajectory [for Harare] is steep. We have a catch-up game to play.

We are looking at no less than ten of these [convention centres] in the next ten years.

Steel Brands – manufacturing with an eye on the environment teel Brands has recently commissioned a new steel processing and manufacturing plant in Harare with an initial outlay of around $12 million, a significant investment in the future of Zimbabwe’s economy. Not only is it expected to create around 450 employment opportunities (and extensive skills training), it will save the country valuable forex from importing raw steel and has the potential to export finished products to the region. After the demise of local company Ziscosteel most steel manufactures were dependant on importing raw materials for steel production. However, Steel Brands has had the vision to utilise recycled steel to create new and valuable products.

The plant not only re-uses scrap metal which would otherwise pollute the environment they also have a policy of recycling all the water used in the manufacturing process.

Recycling old or scrap steel allows Steel Brands to clean up the environment by removing waste and creating new products without the environmental degradation involved in mining and the related industries. Steel production is traditionally extremely damaging to the environment as well as being labour and capital intensive. By using recycled material the new plant also helps to create income for scrap metal dealers. Scrap metal dealers are assured of an equitable price for scrap metal which they deliver to the plant, providing income for the traders while cutting costs usually involved in raw material procurement and transport costs.

The manufacturing plant is situated at 1826 Spurn Road in Ardbennie just off Simon Mazorodze Road and bordering on the heavy industrial sites and the residential suburb of Houghton Park. The company is committed to training local job seekers and has helped boost employment in the previously disadvantaged surrounding suburbs. Not only are they committed to create local employment opportunities they are also committed to an employment and training programme that is gender sensitive and provides opportunities for young women and girls who are generally excluded from Scientific and engineering jobs.

The site for the new plant was acquired in 2013, (adjacent to the new Pepsi plant) but planning and acquiring the necessary

permission took around two years. Planning included permission from Environmental Management Agency (EMA) and City of Harare. Building on site began in 2015 and the project began initial testing towards the end of 2017. The plant was officially opened

by Minister of Industry and Commerce Mike Bimha at the beginning of June this year.

The plant produces deformed steel bars for the construction industry in various sizes from 8mm up to 25mm. The steel bars are normally used for concrete reinforcing from floor slabs up to high rise buildings. The product is sold under the brand name Nexus certified to BS4449 standards. Future plans include the production of other related steel products like angle iron, channel iron and I-bars.

INDUSTRIAL PROFILE

The huge warehouse/factory structure was built by Grid Transmission and is approximately 130m x 40m. The majority of the machinery used was imported from India and specialist technicians came into the country to help set up the plant as well as training local staff to operate and maintain the equipment.

Local staff will receive up to three years of specialised training from their Indian counterparts who have travelled the world setting up similar factories. Steel Brands has even constructed special accommodation for their ex-pat staff on site to make easier for them to deal with transport and housing. So it’s much more convenient for staff to be on site sleeping during the day and working at night.

The factory tends to focus their production during off-peak hours – at night time – when Zesa is less in demand and costs are significantly reduced. Temperatures in the furnaces reach up to 1600 degrees so their demand for electricity is very high.

Subsequently they have a dedicated sub-station and a dedicated ZESA supply line.

New machinery is expected to be imported and operational by July/August this year which will help reduce operational costs and make the plant more viable. This major investment in both equipment and staff shows an optimistic outlook for Zimbabwe’s economic future.

RESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has implored the engineering professionals to play an active role in mobilising investment and closing the infrastructure gap as the country seeks to achieve accelerated economic transformation.

Cde Mnangagwa made the remarks during the official opening of the Zimbabwe Infrastructure Investment and Development Conference being hosted by the Zimbabwe Institute of Engineers.

Strategies to accelerate infrastructure development are high on the agenda at the ongoing conference taking place in Victoria Falls and has attracted stakeholders in the infrastructure sector who include contractors, project managers, potential investors, government officials, engineers and captains of industry.

President Mnangagwa urged stakeholders attending the conference to contribute to the modernisation of the local economy by coming up with appropriate engineering

solutions that close the infrastructure gap and drive investment into various projects.

“The success and modernisation of our economy will, by and large be influenced and driven by excellence in science, engineering, technology and innovation, among key areas.

I challenge you here gathered to leverage on your engineering fields of expertise to generate real value and pay off to the economy,” said Cde Mnangagwa.

The President encouraged the delegates to exploit the opportunities presented by the need for integrated infrastructure under the SADC Regional Infrastructure Development Master Plan and highlighted the need for engineers to shun corruption in the implementation of the infrastructure projects.

“Due to the multi-million dollar nature of investment into infrastructure, I challenge you, men and women in this sector, to observe the highest standards of professional ethics, integrity and accountability,” he said.

Zimbabwe Institution of Engineering (ZIE)

President, Engineer Israel Rwodzi assured the government of the engineering professionals’ resolve to developing home grown solutions as the country seeks to accelerate economic growth.

“I am confident that the country will benefit from the local engineering sector. We have the resources and the human capital to achieve transformation,” he said.

Zimbabwe, which is targeting annual economic growth rate of above 10% per annum in the medium term, has prioritised modernisation of energy, road, rail and ICT infrastructure in order to spur growth.

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has bemoaned the shortage of professional engineers in the country as he challenged the sector to partner government in infrastructural and economic development.

He was speaking while officially opening a Zimbabwe Infrastructure Investment and Development conference which is being hosted by the Zimbabwe Institute of Engineers (ZIE) in Victoria Falls.
