RTG INVESTS US$2 MILLION IN MONTCLAIR RESORT & CONFERENCE
HOTEL REFURBISHMENT
Nyanga, Zimbabwe – 15 June 2026 – Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG) is undertaking a US$2 million refurbishment of Montclair Resort & Conference Hotel as part of its commitment to enhancing guest experiences, modernising its hospitality assets and supporting the growth of tourism in Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands.
The refurbishment project commenced on 1 June 2026 and is scheduled for completion on 31 July 2026.
The hotel remains fully operational throughout the refurbishment period, with the works being implemented in phases to minimise disruption to guests. The first phase covers the Northern Block and Western Block A, comprising 49 rooms, and is expected to be completed by 30 June 2026. The second phase covers the Southern Block and Western Block B, comprising 56 rooms and is scheduled for completion by 31 July 2026.
RTG acquired Montclair Resort & Conference Hotel in 2025 and has since embarked on a strategic programme to unlock value from the property while elevating service standards and guest experiences.
Through innovative space optimisation, the Group has increased the hotel's room inventory from 85 rooms at acquisition to 105 rooms. This was achieved by converting selected suites into additional standard rooms and repurposing rooms previously used as offices.
The décor theme of Montclair Resort & Conference Centre beautifully embodies a harmonious blend of timeless elegance and contemporary sophistication.
Inspired by its spectacular mountain setting, the design palette is anchored in soft, tranquil pastel blues that mirror the mystical mountains as they merge seamlessly with the expansive blue skies. These serene tones are complemented by luxurious soft furnishings, including plush cushions, elegant throws, and flowing curtains in subtle greys and layered shades of blue.
Striking deep-blue velveteen-corduroy headboards serve as a signature design feature, adding richness, warmth, and a sense of refined luxury to the guestrooms while creating a bold visual connection to the surrounding landscape. Carefully curated textures, premium finishes, and thoughtfully selected furnishings create an atmosphere of understated elegance and relaxation.
The result is a warm, inviting, and sophisticated environment that celebrates Montclair’s rich heritage while offering a refreshed and elevated guest experience that is both distinctive and memorable.
The refurbishment encompasses a comprehensive transformation of guest accommodation, public areas and the restaurant, aimed at elevating the overall guest experience and aligning the property with international hospitality standards.
The works include extensive replastering and repainting, installation of new ceilings and premium floor finishes, and a complete overhaul of guest bathrooms featuring contemporary walk-in showers, modern sanitary ware, fittings and finishes and modern lighting fixtures.
The project also includes the replacement of plumbing, electrical and heating systems, the installation of new furniture and soft furnishings, and the refurbishment of roofing infrastructure.
To meet the expectations of today's connected traveller, the upgraded rooms will be equipped with IP Smart TVs, international power outlets incorporating USB and USB-C charging ports, and enhanced technology and utility infrastructure.
Collectively, these upgrades will deliver a modern, comfortable and seamless guest experience while significantly improving the hotel's operational efficiency and long-term sustainability.
The investment comes at a significant time for the property following the recent attainment of ISO 9001:2015 certification by the Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ).
Montclair Resort & Conference Hotel becomes the seventh RTG hotel to achieve the internationally recognised quality management certification, demonstrating the Group's unwavering commitment to service excellence, operational efficiency and continuous improvement.
In line with RTG's Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda, sustainability has been embedded throughout the refurbishment programme.
The upgraded facilities will incorporate water-efficient low-flow flushing systems capable of reducing water consumption by up to 30 percent, as well as smart energy key-card activation systems that optimise electricity usage by ensuring lighting and room utilities operate only when occupied.
These investments will significantly improve resource efficiency while reducing the hotel's environmental footprint.
Beyond the refurbishment, Montclair Resort & Conference Hotel is advancing RTG's sustainability agenda through the Group's RTG Agro Initiative, which promotes farm-to-table food production.
The hotel is currently producing a variety of horticultural crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, onions, broccoli, carrots, peppers and a range of fresh herbs.
By growing produce on-site for use within the hotel's operations, the initiative reduces food miles, lowers transportation-related carbon emissions and ensures guests enjoy fresher, locally sourced ingredients.
This garden-to-plate approach not only supports environmental sustainability but also enhances food quality, strengthens supply chain resilience and contributes to the local circular economy. This initiative reflects RTG's commitment to responsible tourism and sustainable business operations.
Commenting on the investment, RTG Group Chief Executive Mr. Tendai Madziwanyika said the refurbishment reflects the Group's confidence in the future of the Eastern Highlands as a premier tourism destination.
"The Eastern Highlands. It is one of Zimbabwe's most spectacular tourism assets and we believe it has immense potential to become the country's next major tourism destination alongside Victoria Falls.
Through investments such as this refurbishment of Montclair Resort & Conference Hotel, RTG is playing its part in opening up the region, enhancing tourism infrastructure and creating experiences that attract both domestic and international travellers."
"This investment is about more than upgrading a hotel. It is about raising standards, driving destination competitiveness and creating memorable experiences for our guests. As RTG, we are committed to continuously investing in our products to ensure that our hotels remain world-class and capable of meeting the evolving expectations of today's traveller."
"The recent ISO 9001:2015 certification of Montclair Resort & Conference Hotel is another important milestone in our journey towards excellence. For us, ISO is not merely a certification; it is a commitment to consistency, quality and continuous improvement.
It ensures that every guest who chooses an RTG property can expect the same high standards of service, professionalism and hospitality. Ultimately, our goal is to deliver exceptional guest experiences at every touchpoint.
"The refurbishment of Montclair Resort & Conference Hotel forms part of RTG's broader strategy to modernise its portfolio, strengthen Zimbabwe's tourism offering and create sustainable value for guests, employees, shareholders and the communities in which it operates.

INSIDE HB MARINE & HB CUSTOMS BUILT IN ZIMBABWE. BUILT FOR AFRICA.
Zimbabwe may be landlocked, but anyone who has spent time on Kariba, the Zambezi, or the countless waterways across Zimbabwe knows just how strong the boating culture really is.
From serious offshore anglers and safari operators to families chasing weekends on the water, the demand for capable, well-built boats continues to grow — and that is exactly where HB Marine has carved out its place.
Operating from their workshop in Ruwa, HB Marine and HB Customs have become known for building and restoring custom boats designed specifically for African conditions. Every project that leaves the workshop is built around practicality, durability, functionality, and clean craftsmanship — whether it is a full custom catamaran build, a complete refurbishment, or a bespoke trailer and fabrication package.
More than just a boat workshop, HB has become a space where engineering, fabrication, and a genuine passion for the outdoors all come together.

A Workshop Built Around Real Use
Walking through the HB workshop, it quickly becomes clear that this is not a production-line environment. Every vessel, trailer, and fabrication project is approached individually, with a strong focus on detail and long-term reliability.
Inside the workshop, boats sit at various stages of completion — from bare fiberglass hulls being structurally rebuilt, to fully finished offshore catamarans rigged and ready for launch. Fiberglass work, stainless fabrication, upholstery, electronics installation, trailer manufacturing, custom fuel systems, flooring, paintwork, and marine fit-outs are all handled inhouse.
The atmosphere is hands-on and practical. Grinders run, welders spark, fiberglass is shaped and sanded, and custom parts are fabricated to solve real-world problems.
Much of the work is highly customized because the conditions these boats face are demanding — rough roads, long-distance towing, shallow launches, offshore fishing, safari operations, and remote African environments where reliability matters more than showroom polish.
Alongside the marine side of the business, HB Customs supports the operation through custom steel fabrication, trailer manufacturing, structural work, and one-off engineering projects. That crossover between marine experience and heavy fabrication gives the team a unique ability to build complete systems rather than simply assembling boats.
Built for Southern African Conditions
One of the things that separates HB Marine from many imported alternatives is that the boats are designed around how Zimbabweans actually use them.
Trailers are built stronger because roads are harsher. Layouts are designed for fishing practicality or general Family use and long days on the water. Materials are selected with heat, dust, corrosion, and hard use in mind. The goal is not simply to build something that looks good at a boat show — it is to build something that performs year after year in real conditions.
Spotlight on “Apricity”
The team also understands that for many owners, towing and launching are just as important as the vessel itself. Because of this, HB places major focus on complete towable packages, including heavy-duty multi-axle trailers, recovery systems, custom rigging, and practical launch setups suited to local conditions.
One of the workshop’s standout recent builds is the custom off shore Catamaran “Apricity” — a vessel that captures the balance HB Marine aims for between offshore capability, comfort, and clean custom styling.
Designed for serious fishing, family adventures, and charter-style use, the vessel combines large open deck spaces with practical offshore features and premium finishing touches throughout.
Powered by twin Suzuki 200HP four-stroke outboards, the catamaran delivers the reliability and efficiency required for long days on the water. The helm setup integrates modern marine electronics, clean stainless fabrication, and a practical operator-focused layout designed for real offshore use rather than unnecessary complexity.
The boat also showcases the workshop’s attention to detail — from the EVA decking and stainless work to the integrated fishing systems, rod storage, boarding access, and trailer setup.
But more importantly, the build reflects the HB approach as a whole: practical, capable, custombuilt equipment designed to be used properly.
Passion Behind the Business
At its core, HB Marine remains a proudly Zimbabwean business built around passion for craftsmanship, engineering, and the outdoors.
What started as a hands-on operation driven by a love for boats and fabrication has grown into a respected custom workshop servicing clients across Zimbabwe and the wider Southern African region. Despite that growth, the focus has remained the same — build properly, solve problems properly, and create products that owners are proud to use.
Whether restoring an aging hull, fabricating a custom trailer, rigging a high-end offshore catamaran, or engineering one-off custom solutions, the HB team approaches each project with the same philosophy: practical quality, honest workmanship, and equipment built for African adventures.
For many clients, HB Marine is not simply building boats. They are helping build the experiences, trips, memories, and stories that happen once the boat finally hits the water.

WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENT ZIMBABWE MOURNS THE PASSING OF JEAN WHILEY
It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe (WEZ), alongside the broader environmental community, acknowledges the passing of Jean Whiley. A dedicated conservationist, a loyal friend, and a longstanding pillar of both WEZ and the Matobo Conservation Society (MCS), Jean leaves behind a profound legacy of environmental stewardship that spans decades. Her loss leaves a massive void in the organizations she served and the natural landscapes she loved so dearly.
Jean gave countless years of service to conservation in Zimbabwe, not through fanfare or a desire for public recognition, but through quiet commitment, total reliability, and a genuine passion for the natural world. She belonged to that rare class of individuals whose everyday contributions were woven into the very fabric of the organizations they supported, ensuring their operational success behind the scenes.
Within WEZ, Jean was a longtime, devoted member who embraced the vital, practical elements of wildlife preservation. She played a central role in the annual game counts, taking on the meticulous and exhaustive work of compiling, auditing, and organizing game count data. This vital historical information remains absolutely foundational to national conservation efforts, providing the baseline metrics required for long-term wildlife monitoring across the country's national parks and sanctuaries.
Beyond her scientific and administrative contributions, Jean was an enthusiastic, familiar face at community events. She was a vibrant participant in WEZ’s ProAm quizzes and generously dedicated her time and energy to supporting the junior schools quiz program
Through her active involvement, she helped nurture curiosity, expand ecological knowledge, and instill a lifelong love for the environment in younger generations of Zimbabweans.
Her historical contributions to the Matobo Conservation Society were equally significant. Jean served faithfully for many years across various critical administration roles, gracefully navigating the demanding responsibilities of Treasurer, while previously serving as both Secretary and Membership Officer.
Her steady hand, organizational mastery, and unwavering dedication helped sustain the Society through many complex years of conservation work, specifically protecting the unique natural and cultural heritage of the ancient Matobo Hills.
However, beyond the formal titles and systemic responsibilities, Jean will be remembered most for her personal warmth, her immediate willingness to help, her quiet humor, and her reassuring, dependable presence. She was someone who simply got things done thoughtfully and carefully, without ever seeking attention.
True conservation work is rarely built on outspoken voices alone; it relies heavily on the steadfast, passionate people who dedicate their lives behind the scenes to protecting vulnerable wildlife, habitats, and communities.
Jean Whiley was the absolute embodiment of that steadfast spirit. Heartfelt condolences from the entire conservation community are extended to her loving husband—WEZ Vice Chairman Robert—as well as her family, friends, and colleagues. May she rest in peace.

The Daily Reality of An Anti-Poaching Unit
Behind every protected landscape is a team that rarely gets seen, operating in the quiet shadows of Zimbabwe's vast wilderness. While global conversations often center on tracking data and high-level wildlife policies, the frontline reality of conservation is forged in the dirt, grit, and sweat of daily foot patrols.
Across the rugged buffer zones bordering Hwange National Park, dedicated scouts are out in the field executing a dangerous mission: safeguarding the critically endangered African painted dog and the diverse wildlife that shares its home.
The daily routine for these rangers begins long before the African sun breaks the horizon. Operating out of remote field camps, the anti-poaching units face punishing conditions defined by blistering heat, choking dust, and immense physical exhaustion.
Armed with determination and sharp tracking instincts, the scouts cover vast distances on foot through thick, thorn-choked bush. These extensive patrols are essential because painted dogs are highly mobile hunters, traversing massive home ranges each day, a trait that unfortunately makes them exceptionally vulnerable to encountering hidden dangers.
The primary threat confronting these wild packs is the silent menace of wire snares. Set by poachers targeting larger game for the commercial bushmeat trade, these cheap, unyielding wire loops act as indiscriminate killers. Because of their wide-ranging hunting patterns, painted dogs frequently stumble into these traps, facing agonizing injuries or death.
For the anti-poaching unit, the search for these metallic traps requires absolute focus. Rangers must carefully scan the dense undergrowth, detecting the minute disruptions in the soil or vegetation that reveal a poacher's handiwork.
Every single snare removed from the bush by the scouts represents a life potentially saved. Since the unit's inception, tens of thousands of illegal wires have been successfully dismantled and confiscated, preventing a catastrophic loss of biodiversity. These daily sweeps are combined with critical radio calls, coordinated data gathering, and overnight operations far away from the comfort of their homes and families.
Ultimately, conservation does not happen from a safe distance; it happens directly on the frontline. Every patrol deployed is a resilient stand against organized wildlife crime. The courage and commitment displayed by these rangers provide the ultimate shield for Zimbabwe's wild spaces.
To ensure the survival of the painted dogs and maintain the balance of this fragile ecosystem, the continuous support of these brave field scouts remains absolutely paramount.
Gweru’s Antelope Park Is A Secret The World Forgot!
Text by Martin Chemhere
In the heart of Zimbabwe’s scenic Midlands Province lies a hidden paradise that seems completely insulated from the frantic pace of modern life. Spanning over 3,000 acres of pristine open savannah, Antelope Park in Gweru stands as a breathtaking testament to the raw, untouched beauty of the African bush.
For travelers seeking a profound connection with nature, this remarkable eco-tourism sanctuary offers an immersive escape where the ancient rhythms of the wilderness take precedence over the noise of civilization.
The magic of Antelope Park begins the moment the morning sun crests the horizon, bathing the landscape in amber light. One of the most unforgettable ways to experience this sanctuary is from the saddle.
The park's signature horseback rides allow guests to glide silently through vast, golden grasslands, moving alongside herds of zebra, wildebeest, and graceful giraffes.
Because the resident wildlife perceives the horses as part of the natural environment, riders are granted an extraordinarily close, unhurried look at these animals in their true habitat—a stark and beautiful contrast to traditional vehicle-bound safaris.
Guests can spend their evening sharing stories around a crackling campfire, listening to the nocturnal symphony of the bush, or even embarking on a rare night drive to witness elusive nocturnal predators awake and on the hunt.
Antelope Park is more than just a holiday destination; it is a profound journey into a forgotten world. Whether you are traversing the golden plains by day, tracking apex predators at twilight, or sleeping under a spectacular canopy of stars, a trip here promises an authentic African adventure that stays with you forever.
As the day begins to wane, the true drama of the African bush unfolds. Antelope Park is renowned for its thrilling lion walks and educational enclosure tours, which give visitors a rare glimpse into the lives of Africa's most iconic predators. Accompanied by expert guides and conservation specialists, walking near these majestic big cats at dusk provides an unmatched adrenaline rush and a deeper understanding of lion behavior and vital preservation efforts. The air cools, the shadows lengthen, and the distant, resonant roar of a lion echoes across the plains, signaling the transition into the domain of the night.
When darkness finally envelopes the savannah, the experience transforms yet again. Far away from the light pollution of major cities, the night skies above Gweru transform into a brilliant, velvety canvas adorned with millions of piercingly bright stars.
The Unrivaled Advantages Of Exploring Zimbabwe On A Horseback Safari
Text by Martin Chemhere
As global travelers increasingly seek raw, uncommercialized, and low-impact ways to connect with nature, horseback safaris have emerged as one of the most rewarding ways to experience Zimbabwe’s pristine wilderness. Moving away from the mechanical noise of traditional 4x4 safari vehicles, taking to the saddle offers an intimate, highly thrilling perspective of the African bush.
The specialized style of travel seamlessly bridges the gap between high-adrenaline adventure and deep ecological connection, making it an increasingly popular choice across the country's premier wildlife conservancies.
The most profound advantage of a horseback safari is the radical transformation it brings to wildlife encounters. Because horses are natural herd animals, their scent and presence are readily accepted by native fauna, masking the human element.
This allows riders to glide completely undetected into the middle of grazing herds of zebras, impalas, and giraffes, who remain entirely calm rather than fleeing.
Witnessing these magnificent creatures behave naturally from just a few meters away, without the disruptive roar of a diesel engine, provides an authentic, dust-free wildlife connection that is simply impossible to replicate from the back of a standard safari truck.
Beyond the intimacy of the animal encounters, horses possess a unique mechanical advantage when navigating Zimbabwe’s varied and often challenging topography.
Whether traversing the rugged, rocky valleys of the Mavuradonha Wilderness, navigating the deep Kalahari sands of Hwange, or wading through the lush floodplains along the Zambezi River in Mana Pools, a well-trained safari horse can effortlessly go where vehicles cannot.
This exceptional mobility allows guides to lead travelers off the established, dusty game-drive tracks and deep into pristine, untouched thickets. Riders can explore hidden natural waterholes, follow ancient migratory paths through dense mopane forests, and ascend steep ridges for panoramic views, all while leaving an incredibly light environmental footprint that preserves the delicate ecosystems for future generations.
Riding through the bush also heightens the traveler's own senses, turning a standard vacation into an active, immersive masterclass in wilderness survival and tracking. Without the barrier of metal and glass, riders become keenly aware of the environment, feeling the shift in the breeze, smelling the damp earth near a riverbed, and hearing the subtle alarm calls of birds warning of a nearby predator.
Guided by highly certified, armed professional tracking guides, participants learn to read the ground for fresh tracks, understand animal behavior dynamically, and master the art of silent communication.
From enjoying a fast-paced canter alongside a herd of wildebeest on an open savanna plain to quietly watching the sunset from an elevated granite kopje, a horseback safari in Zimbabwe promises an unforgettable, deeply liberating adventure that truly satisfies the soul of the modern explorer.
ENDANGERED PAINTED DOGS
Text by Martin Chemhere
Painted Dog Conservation Inc (PDC) has successfully collaborated with the African Wildlife Conservation Fund (AWCF) to resolve a critical human-wildlife conflict that had recently resulted in tragic painted dog losses.
The joint intervention marks the culmination of months of intense, multi-stakeholder negotiations. The breakthrough establishes a sustainable framework that safeguards local communities while permanently keeping vulnerable wildlife secure within the boundaries of the conservancy.
African painted dogs, uniquely distinguished by their mottled coats and complex social structures, are among the continent's most endangered carnivores.
As human settlements and agricultural zones expand along the fringes of protected wilderness areas, contact between apex predators and rural communities has inevitably intensified.
In this instance, a series of costly boundary incursions led to severe friction, culminating in retaliatory measures that claimed the lives of several painted dogs from a key ecological pack. Recognizing the urgency of the threat, PDC and AWCF pooled their field expertise and resources to design an immediate, community-centered resolution strategy.
The success of the initiative hinged on months of delicate, transparent negotiations involving local traditional leadership, rural district councils, community members, and wildlife authorities. Rather than imposing top-down conservation mandates, the coalition focused on empathetic, collaborative problem-solving. Dialogue centered on addressing the economic anxieties of farmers who feared for their livestock, while simultaneously educating the community on the immense ecological and tourism value that a healthy painted dog population brings to the region. Through this participatory approach, the stakeholders co-created a comprehensive mitigation plan. The physical end result combines reinforced predator-proof livestock corrals with increased community-led scout patrols along critical wildlife corridors. By actively involving the community in the protective infrastructure of the conservancy, the project transforms former adversaries into active custodians of the wilderness.
With the conflict successfully defused, conservationists are celebrating a renewed era of coexistence. The joint operations have successfully stabilized the immediate threat, ensuring that the remaining painted dog packs can hunt, breed, and roam without the imminent danger of human retaliation. This successful model proves that long-term wildlife preservation in Zimbabwe is entirely dependent on empowering the communities that live alongside these magnificent, endangered predators.
Matobo Hills Cultural Initiative Empowers Rural Women Artisans Through Traditional Painting
The latest seasonal cycle of the "My Beautiful Home" initiative has officially launched, marking a new chapter for an innovative community campaign that continues to capture the imagination of the region. Administered as a non-profit private trust registered in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, the project operates as an independent civic vehicle dedicated to encouraging beautiful traditions and preserving the unique tangible and intangible heritage of Matabeleland South.
The world-renowned Matobo Hills—a breathtaking geological wonder of stacked granite boulders, dotted with ancient rock-art caves and home to the mythical black and white rhinoceros—form the iconic backdrop of this unique project. This rugged landscape is not only a UNESCO World Heritage site and a sanctuary for endangered wildlife, but it also serves as the birthplace of a rich, matrilineal visual arts culture that has survived for centuries through the passing of oral and practical techniques from mothers to daughters.
Text by Martin Chemhere
In this unique cultural world, the trust coordinates a highly anticipated annual competition between traditional mud huts, known locally as rondavels. The community contest actively encourages an ancestral artistic tradition by challenging women to decorate the exterior and interior walls of their homesteads using purely natural, locally sourced pigments. Artisans travel long distances to harvest multicolored clay soils, charcoal residue, ash, and organic compounds to mix their own specialized, weatherresistant paints.
The intricate geometric motifs, chevron patterns, and stylized wildlife silhouettes painted onto the structures elevate simple rural dwellings into extraordinary masterpieces of contemporary African design.
Because the intense summer rains gradually wash away the murals each year, the dry season brings an essential, rhythmic period of renewal where the entire community transforms into an open-air art gallery.
The competition plays a vital role in helping families survive through art in an extremely arid rural environment. The Matobo district is notoriously prone to severe droughts, making traditional subsistence farming an increasingly unreliable source of livelihood for local communities.
The program injects tangible rewards into the community, while bridging the gap between artistic expression and basic economic survival. Winning contestants are rewarded with highly practical prizes, including solar power kits, water storage tanks, farming implements, and building materials that directly improve their quality of life.
As global interest in the distinct geometric art form grows, local fashion councils and international design houses are increasingly collaborating with these rural matriarchs, opening up sustainable global markets and ensuring that the ancient stories of the Matobo granite hills continue to be painted, celebrated, and preserved by future generations

Operating as a hidden gem bordering the national park, the resort acts as an educational and experiential bridge.
It allows visitors to explore the rich local history, enjoy traditional culinary offerings, and engage with community-led initiatives, making it an essential stopover for travelers seeking a profound connection to the people and heritage of Matabeleland North.
Recognizing the evolving needs of regional exploration, the brand has extended its hospitality architecture beyond the borders of Hwange to establish the Gwango Tamarillo Estate in Bulawayo.
Acting as a serene traveller's sanctuary, this urban estate serves as an ideal base for regional itineraries. Its strategic geographic positioning puts it within comfortable driving distance of Zimbabwe's most iconic historical landmarks, including the balancing granite topography of Matobo National Park and the ancient stone architecture of Great Zimbabwe in Masvingo.

For the self-sufficient explorer, the brand offers tailored, low-impact accommodation tiers that celebrate the simplicity of the bush. Gwango Kule Camp provides an authentic wilderness experience tailored specifically for adventurous guests, offering a flexible balance between the comfort of fully equipped self-catering bungalows and open clearings where travellers can pitch their own tents under the expansive African night skies.

CORPORATE REALIGNMENT BECKONS FOR THE 'GRAND OLD LADY' OF VICTORIA FALLS
A major structural shift is on the horizon for one of Africa's most iconic luxury hospitality landmarks. Meikles Limited has published a cautionary statement indicating its intention to exit the joint venture partnership that operates the historic Victoria Falls Hotel. Highlighting this significant market move on X, prominent property consultant Kura Chihota shed light on the unwinding partnership. Fondly referred to as the "Old Lady," the magnificent Edwardian-style hotel has stood as a premier beacon of regional luxury tourism since its establishment in 1904, making this corporate repositioning a highly watched development in the international hospitality sector.
To understand the nature of the impending exit, it is essential to look at the unique dual-layered ownership and operational structure governing the world-renowned asset. The land and physical property of the Victoria Falls Hotel are owned by Emerged Railways Properties, a historic real estate holding entity held on a strict 50:50 basis by binational state-owned transport networks representing the governments of Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Text by Martin Chemhere
While the state railway authorities maintain absolute ownership of the underlying infrastructure, the day-to-day operations and hospitality management have long been leased to a joint venture tenant consisting of two of Zimbabwe’s largest hospitality giants: Meikles Zimbabwe and African Sun Limited.
The publication of the cautionary statement by Meikles confirms that negotiations are underway to formally unwind its stake in the operating lease. The decision underscores a notable strategic shift for the group, following its prior multi-million dollar disposal of the iconic Meikles Hotel in Harare.
While the specific financial terms and the exact identity of the acquiring parties remain sensitive, market analysts suggest that the exit could either allow African Sun Limited to consolidate full operational control, or clear the path for a major international luxury hotel brand to enter the fray. Meikles has formally advised its shareholders and the investing public to exercise caution when dealing in the company's shares until a full and definitive disclosure is made.
The transition comes at a time when tourism around the UNESCO World Heritage site is experiencing an unprecedented post-pandemic resurgence, drawing high-spending international travellers and major global brands to the immediate vicinity. Because the Victoria Falls Hotel is a foundational asset to Zimbabwe's destination brand, any alteration in its management structure is bound to impact market dynamics. As the "Old Lady" prepares for her next chapter, the hospitality and property industries await to see how this corporate realignment will reshape visitor experiences and influence future capital investments into the legendary property.
PARLIAMENT PROBES TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE GAPS AND CONSERVATION AT ZIMPARKS HEADQUARTERS
Text by Martin Chemhere
The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Tourism and Hospitality Industry recently stepped up its legislative oversight by engaging directly with the leadership of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. On 01 June, ZimParks officials hosted the esteemed legislative delegation for a high-level strategic meeting at their corporate head office in Harare.
The intensive discussion formed a core component of the committee's formal oversight mandate, specifically targeting critical structural challenges and evaluating emerging growth opportunities within one of the nation’s foundational economic sectors.
At the heart of the bilateral dialogue was a comprehensive review of the current state of Zimbabwe's protected conservation areas, existing tourism infrastructure, domestic and international visitor experiences, and ongoing wildlife conservation efforts. Lawmakers focused heavily on examining the systemic gaps in transport connectivity. They emphasized that the condition of road networks leading into major protected areas remains a significant bottleneck to tourism performance and long-term economic development.
Due to the fact that poor road conditions lower accessibility and raise operational costs for local businesses, this timely parliamentary probe highlighted the collective urgency to elevate the competitiveness of remote attractions like Hwange, Mana Pools, and Gonarezhou National Parks.
The engagement provided a transparent, collaborative platform for both state conservationists and legislators to brainstorm practical solutions to the complex, multi-layered challenges facing the country’s vast natural estates. Members of the portfolio committee contributed essential governance insights, challenging inquiries, and targeted strategic recommendations designed to fortify the sector's operational resilience.
ZimParks expressed profound gratitude for the remarkably open and constructive atmosphere of the dialogue, noting that the analytical feedback provided by the lawmakers will serve to inspire and refine their immediate conservation strategies and destination development frameworks.
Looking ahead, the successful consultation has injected a strong sense of institutional optimism regarding the future of Zimbabwe’s environmental and hospitality ecosystems.
As ZimParks actively works to fulfill its national conservation mandate and expand visitor arrival numbers, the management anticipates sustaining this productive relationship with the parliamentary portfolio committee. Both parties remain unified in their ultimate goal to enhance the environmental sustainability, infrastructural integrity, and global market competitiveness of Zimbabwe's premier wilderness destinations.

Operating completely off the national power grid, Churu Expedition Camp relies on a robust 3kVA solar system paired with a backup generator, ensuring a sustainable, eco-friendly footprint.
Overlanders can unpack and rest inside the "Gazebo," a spacious, sheltered common dining and lounge area designed for sharing travel stories. Self-catering operations are fully supported by a central, comprehensively equipped kitchen fitted with gas stoves, deep freezers, and a high-tech reverse osmosis water filtration unit that provides perfectly safe borehole drinking water.
Because Churu remains entirely unfenced, guests enjoy an immersive wildlife experience where elephants and various plains game frequently wander through the grounds. Beyond serving as a secure, tranquil haven to park overland rigs, the camp offers a diverse menu of classic Kariba activities, including guided game drives into the adjacent park and half-day pontoon boat rentals for top-tier tigerfishing.
Whether arriving by rugged 4x4 tracks via the Magunje road, launching a boat across the lake from Kariba town, or driving deep through the heart of Matusadona, Overlanders will find Churu Expedition Camp to be an unparalleled, refreshing sanctuary where the untamed African wild seamlessly meets the water.
A vital five-day wildlife road safety awareness campaign is officially underway at Cross Mabale along the busy Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Highway. Running from June 1st to June 5th, this major collaborative effort brings together Painted Dog Conservation (PDC), the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ).
Representatives from these prominent organizations have stationed themselves at a critical checkpoint to engage directly with passing motorists, public transport drivers, and haulage truck operators. The target area at Cross Mabale is not chosen at random.
This specific stretch of the highway intersects a globally important ecological corridor that borders Hwange National Park. It is a critical wildlife zone where a variety of animals, including the highly endangered African painted dog, frequently cross the tarmac in search of food and water.
Over the years, speeding and nighttime driving have turned this road into a perilous zone. High-speed vehicle-wildlife collisions carry devastating consequences, often resulting in tragic human fatalities, severe injuries, costly vehicular damage, and the heartbreaking loss of precious, protected wildlife.
The core message being delivered by the multi-agency team to commuters is simple and direct: Your life matters, and so does wildlife. Organizers are appealing to the conscience and responsibility of every road user. By simply slowing down, staying highly alert during peak wildlife movement hours, and respecting designated wildlife crossing zones, every single driver has the power to prevent accidents and save lives.
Drivers are being handed educational materials and engaged in brief, impactful conversations emphasizing how a minor reduction in travel speed dramatically increases reaction times when an animal suddenly emerges from the bush. This critical campaign underscores the power of institutional unity in solving complex conservation and public safety challenges. The organizers have expressed profound gratitude to all the diverse stakeholders who have proactively come together to fund, plan, and execute this important initiative.
However, institutional efforts can only do so much on their own. The ultimate success of the campaign rests in the hands of the traveling public. All road users are being strongly encouraged to play their part in modifying their driving habits, ensuring that Zimbabwe's highways become significantly safer for both humans and the spectacular wildlife that calls this landscape home.

Strategically positioned by the iconic Chituba Spring turn-off, this exclusive outpost promises to redefine the remote bush experience in one of Zimbabwe’s most rugged, awe-inspiring wilderness areas. The launch marks a significant milestone for Hideaways Mhara River Camp, expanding its footprint into a region celebrated for its raw beauty and dense wildlife concentrations.
The birth of the camp was a deeply collaborative effort. Rather than relying on external contractors, Hideaways Mhara River Camp’s own team of world-class guides transformed the inaugural setup into an impromptu team-building day. Working side-by-side in the heat of the Zambezi Valley, the team pooled their deep bush knowledge and physical stamina to bring the corporate vision to life.
From pitching the canvas to positioning the low-impact viewing areas, every element was crafted with meticulous attention to detail. This hands-on approach ensured that the camp was built not just with precision, but with a profound respect for the surrounding ecosystem. The guides even took on the role of documentarians, capturing the magic of the setup process themselves. Their candid photographs and videos showcase a shared passion, featuring big smiles, heavy lifting, and the undeniable camaraderie that defines the company's culture. A special shoutout goes to Team Mhara and the guiding crew, whose extraordinary hard work and epic teamwork shone through in every single detail of the construction. It is their intimate understanding of the landscape that has infused the camp with its authentic, soulful atmosphere.
For future Mhara guests, the opening of this fly camp unlocks access to one of the most thrilling and pristine locations in Zimbabwe. Chitake Springs is famous for its intense wildlife action, but the new location offers a different kind of enchantment as the sun goes down. Positioned away from light pollution and surrounded by the whispering wild, guests should get ready for an unforgettable night sky experience. Sleeping under a canopy of brilliant stars, surrounded by the nocturnal sounds of the African bush, the camp offers an immersive, raw connection to nature that standard lodges simply cannot replicate. The Chitake fly camp is officially open, waiting to host those brave enough to seek the wild and romantic enough to sleep beneath the stars.

In a move that promises to delight nature lovers and luxury travelers alike, the serene highlands of Juliasdale are about to become even more enchanting. Froggy Farm, a hidden gem nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands, has officially announced that something exciting is taking shape on its grounds. Building upon the incredible success of its initial hospitality offerings, the estate has broken ground on its highly anticipated second eco cabin, signaling a new chapter for sustainable tourism in the region.
The expansion comes at a time when the demand for boutique, eco-conscious travel is soaring. Travelers are increasingly moving away from massive, crowded resorts in favor of intimate, low-impact accommodations that allow them to disconnect from everyday stressors. The upcoming cabin is meticulously designed to do exactly that, promising to bring even more cozy escapes, peaceful views, and undeniable countryside magic to the mist-covered peaks of Nyanga and Juliasdale.
The structural engineering also prioritizes environmental sensitivity. Elevated on robust stilts to minimize the footprint on the delicate mountain soil, the cabin blends seamlessly into the surrounding indigenous trees and ancient granite boulders.
Handcrafted stone masonry adorns the main entryway, mirroring the natural rock formations of the farm and creating an authentic sense of place. Wooden viewing decks extend outward into the canopy, offering the perfect platform for morning coffee or evening stargazing.
As seen in the architectural progress at Froggy Farm, the new structure beautifully bridges the gap between striking modern design and natural preservation. Built directly into the dramatic, rocky terrain, the cabin utilizes an innovative A-frame hybrid structure featuring rich, warm timber panels contrasted against sleek, dark corrugated cladding. Huge, triangular glass facades open up the interior spaces, ensuring that guests will have an uninterrupted view of the sweeping valleys below from the moment they wake up.

Behind the Scenes of Troutbeck Resort’s Magnificent Transformation
Text by Martin Chemhere

By opening up structural layouts and introducing sophisticated design elements, the resort is positioning itself to deliver a world-class luxury experience right in the heart of Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands.
Management has made it clear that they are avoiding full reveals for just a little longer, opting instead to build anticipation among their loyal patrons and the broader travel community. "No full reveals just yet… but trust us, it’s worth the wait," the resort teased, promising to take followers along on every step of this creative journey as the next chapter unfolds.
For travelers who hold fond memories of walking the resort's pine-fringed pathways or fishing on the lake, the unfolding transformation promises an entirely elevated way to experience the magic of Nyanga.
As structural work progresses and the finer design details begin to take shape, the excitement surrounding Troutbeck's grand uncovering continues to mount. One thing is absolutely certain: when the curtains are finally pulled back, this legendary highland sanctuary will be ready to enchant a whole new generation of adventurers.
