ZIMBABWE’S NOTTINGHAM ESTATE: HOME OF THE
8TH WONDER OF THE WORLD
Nottingham Estate, in the lowveld of Zimbabwe, is a destination that defies conventional safari expectations. This unique eco-tourism haven offers an exclusive blend of wildlife encounters, historical exploration, and agricultural insight, all centred around a phenomenon so extraordinary it has been dubbed the "8th wonder of the world."
What truly sets Nottingham Estate apart from more traditional safari areas is its unparalleled exclusivity. There are no other operators sharing the vast expanse of the estate, meaning that during a bush drive, there is no competition for prime viewing spots at water pans, nor are other boats vying for space on the water during a cruise. This deliberate lack of commercialization ensures an experience that is not only unique but profoundly private.
Text by Martin Chemhere Images by Caast Media Group
Furthermore, guests benefit from transparent pricing with no hidden fees, such as often-prevalent Parks fees, making Nottingham Estate Resorts rates highly competitive and offering exceptional value for money. The intimate scale of the camps allows for remarkable flexibility, catering to special requests like complimentary birthday cakes, early check-ins, late check-outs, or even penalty-free postponements and deposit refunds for unforeseen circumstances like health issues or death. "The exclusivity is what truly sets us apart," states Angela Mason, Bookings Clerk for Zimbabwe’s Nottingham Estate. "There's no competition for viewing space, whether you're on a bush drive or a boat cruise. It's an intimate and truly private experience."
The overall guest experience at Nottingham Estate begins with a warm welcome at reception, complete with a refreshing glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. Porters are on hand to assist with luggage, setting the tone for a stay defined by peace, quiet, and utmost privacy. Guests consistently praise the great and helpful staff, who are dedicated to ensuring every need is met with urgency and care. Meals are a highlight, prepared with fresh ingredients and careful consideration for dietary requirements.
Daily housekeeping and laundry services are provided, and even vehicles are washed during a guest's stay. Itineraries are thoughtfully planned, taking into account individual or group preferences, and in winter, a comforting bonfire is lit nightly.
Essential amenities like Wi-Fi, 24/7 generator backup, uninterrupted water supply, purified drinking water, hot showers, air conditioning, and complimentary ice for in-house residents further enhance comfort. Activities are available on request, ensuring a tailored and engaging stay. Nottingham Estate offers three distinct accommodation options: Nottingham Retreat, Kuduland Lodge, and Kuduland camping grounds, along with a seasonal Flycamp. Nottingham Retreat, featuring beautiful waterfront chalets, is located on the tranquil Mashilichokwe Dam.
It offers modern king-bedded rooms with bathtubs and a contemporary dining, bar, and lounge area, all on a full-board basis. Kuduland Lodge, situated on the Limpopo River, features thatched chalets or Barocs with three-quarter beds and showers only. Its dining, bar, and lounge area are more basic, providing a traditional safari atmosphere. Kuduland Lodge operates on a dinner and breakfast basis and uniquely offers a self-catering option with camp cooks available to prepare meals using guest groceries, and also boasts a private swimming pool and camping facilities. Travellers choose between the two based on budget, preference for a luxury versus a basic but comfortable camp, and catering preferences.
The seasonal Flycamp is arguably the estate's crown jewel, referred to by many as "the 8th wonder of the world." This remarkable attraction centres around the "elephant feeding experience." Nottingham Estate is primarily a citrus farm, and citrus fruit deemed unfit for market or human consumption, along with orange pulp from the nearby juicing factory, is fed to the wildlife at a designated spot.
This serves as a vital conservation practice, as citrus is acidic and can damage soil in large quantities. Through the consolidation of discarded fruit and pulp, the camp’s environment is protected, and wildlife receives a beneficial citrus supplement. The true wonder, not seen anywhere else under the sun, lies in witnessing up to 200+ elephants, along with baboons and other animals, congregating each night to feast.
The air is filled with the calls of baboons, the trumpeting and rumbling of elephants, and the clicking hocks of eland, creating an unforgettable symphony of nature. "Our Flycamp and the elephant feeding phenomenon are what many clients refer to as 'the 8th wonder of the world.' Witnessing 200+ elephants feeding on citrus each night is something you won't find anywhere else," said Mason.
The estate is also home to a diverse array of wildlife and guests can hope to encounter zebra, nyala, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, klipspringer, wildebeest, the occasional leopard, among others. The estate also boasts a large variety of birds. It is important to note that the estate is not game fenced, so while wildlife is abundant, large concentrations as seen in national parks like Kruger are not guaranteed, adding to the authentic wild experience.
Nottingham Retreat is particularly renowned for its exceptional fishing opportunities on the Mashilichokwe Dam. The dam is abundant with Bass, Bream, and Catfish (Barbel), providing excellent angling experiences for both seasoned fishermen and beginners.
Water-based activities at Nottingham Retreat include boat cruises. Guests can enjoy delicious breakfast cruises or sundowner excursions, with opportunities to spot crocodiles, hippos, and an amazing array of water birds. On occasion, lucky guests might even witness elephants enjoying a dip in the water.
Steeped in history, the estate offers visitors a glimpse into the past through its historical and archaeological sites. Several caves, ancient grain bins, and captivating rock painting sites are scattered across the estate. Bush drives often include stops at these significant locations.
The TDK (Trance Dance Krantz) rock art site at the estate is particularly important, providing insights into the enigmatic Y-shapes commonly found in the Limpopo Valley. These shapes, thought to represent animal skins that evolved into aprons given to initiates after their transition from childhood to adulthood, are found alongside beautiful depictions of antelope and figures.
For those interested in the agricultural side of the estate, the Pack Shed Tour offers a guided experience explaining the entire process of sorting, grading, washing, and packaging citrus for export. Visitors can observe the huge cold storage rooms for fruit awaiting shipment and the large machinery used for washing, waxing, and weighing the citrus.
Dining at Kuduland Lodge offers both self-catering options, where clients bring their own ingredients and the kitchen cooks prepare meals, and catered options. For catered meals, advance booking is required, with guests encouraged to mention any special dietary restrictions.
Nottingham Retreat operates on a full-board basis. Guided bush walks and game drives are available, providing opportunities to learn about the abundant fauna and flora of the estate, including massive baobab trees, nyala-berry trees, mopane trees, acacia, and riverine bushes. Guests can spot various animals, trees, and beautiful rock kopjes, and visit attractions like Skeleton Rock, Zebra Pan, the estate's largest Baobab, and Bushman paintings. The best time to visit the estates, especially for the elephant feeding at Fly Camp and other wildlife viewing opportunities, is from April to mid-October.
The estate is easily accessible by both road and air, with a registered airstrip available. While 4x4 vehicles are ideal, all cars can manage the roads if driven with care. Nottingham Estate is deeply committed to sustainability and conservation as both a citrus farm and an eco-tourism destination. The estate has invested in solar power, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to environmental responsibility. Furthermore, a couple of man-made dams provide crucial water for the citrus through drier periods, showcasing their dedication to resource management.
Families traveling with children will find Nottingham Estate to be a particularly engaging and enjoyable destination. The comfortable lodging offers child-friendly facilities and ample space to stretch out. Pools, lawns, and safe open spaces encourage play. Interactive wildlife experiences, such as elephant feeding, game drives, and dam cruises, captivate young minds. Educational heritage and archaeology tours inspire curiosity, while a jumping castle and a fenced sandy play area near the river bank, complete with toys, provide endless entertainment.
For camping clients, full ablution blocks with toilets and showers are available, along with a kitchen equipped with gas stoves, a kettle, a fridge, and a microwave. Mason emphasizes their commitment to guest satisfaction: "We strive to cater to every guest's needs, from complimentary birthday cakes to flexible cancellation policies. It's about creating a truly personalized and memorable stay."

HILLTOP LODGE: WEAVING NATURE’S
SPLENDOUR INTO EVERY STAY
Text by Martin Chemhere images by Caast Media Group
Zebra Hilltop Lodge in Beitbridge is a unique hilltop sanctuary offering refined luxury and unforgettable moments amidst Zimbabwe's breathtaking landscapes. In this Q&A, Destination Zimbabwe’s (DZ) writer Martin Chemhere, speaks to (BMM), the Founder of the lodge.
DZ: What was the inspiration behind the establishment of Zebra Hilltop Lodge, and how has the founding vision shaped its operations?
BMM: Seven years ago, as I sat perched atop this majestic hill, enveloped by the breath-taking panorama and mesmerized by the ethereal sunset, a realization dawned upon me.
This unparalleled beauty was not mine to keep; it was a treasure that beckoned to be shared. And so, fuelled by a passion to extend this experience beyond myself, Zebra Hilltop Lodge came into existence. Our mission? To capture the essence of nature's splendour and weave it into every guest's journey, creating unforgettable moments and memories that transcend the ordinary.
DZ: When was the lodge opened and how has it been performing?
BMM: The lodge officially began trial operations in 2023 and has since gained remarkable momentum. Despite being a relatively new establishment, Zebra Hilltop Lodge has seen a steady rise in occupancy rates, hosted several high-profile events, and has quickly become a sought-after destination for both leisure and business travellers in the region.
DZ: Who is the General Manager of the lodge?
BMM: Nadine Hundermark is the General Manager of Zebra Hilltop Lodge. With extensive experience in hospitality management and a passion for excellence, she leads the team in delivering world-class service with a personal touch.
DZ: How does the lodge’s unique location, perched on a hill 48km from Beitbridge, contribute to the “breathtaking panorama” and overall guest experience?
BMM: The hilltop location offers sweeping views of the surrounding bushveld, creating a sense of peaceful seclusion while still being accessible. Sunrises and sunsets from the lodge are truly magical, making it an ideal setting for relaxation, romance, and reconnecting with nature. It’s not just a view—it’s an experience that calms the soul and ignites wonder.
DZ: Could you elaborate on the “refined luxury” and “5-star experience” that guests can expect from the accommodation at Zebra Hilltop Lodge?
BMM: Our accommodations combine the elegance of boutique luxury with the warmth of African hospitality. Each room is thoughtfully designed with premium finishes, plush bedding, modern amenities, and private balconies that offer uninterrupted views. Guests can expect exceptional attention to detail, personalized service, and a tranquil environment where every comfort is thoughtfully curated.
DZ: What dining options are available at the lodge’s restaurant, and what kind of culinary experience does it aim to provide?
BMM: Zebra Hilltop Lodge offers both à la carte and buffet-style menus, tailored to suit every guest’s preference. From hearty breakfasts to refined dinners, our culinary team prides itself on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create flavourful, memorable meals. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or enjoying a casual lunch, our restaurant delivers an elevated yet approachable dining experience.
DZ: What amenities and views can guests enjoy from the bar deck, particularly during evening hours for cocktails and game viewing?
BMM: The bar deck is a favourite gathering spot, especially during golden hour. Guests can unwind with expertly crafted cocktails as they take in panoramic views of the savannah below. With a bit of luck, wildlife sightings such as zebra or impala add a touch of magic to the experience. It's a place where laughter flows as freely as the drinks, and every sunset feels like a private show.
DZ: How does the lodge cater to different types of guests—romantic getaways, business retreats, or family escapes?
BMM: Zebra Hilltop Lodge is designed to accommodate all types of travellers. For couples, we offer private suites and intimate dining experiences. Business guests benefit from our fully equipped conference centre and high-speed connectivity. Families can enjoy spacious lodgings, curated activities, and a welcoming atmosphere. We personalize each guest’s stay to ensure it meets their unique expectations.
DZ: Can you provide more details about the Conference Centre and its capacity?
BMM: Our conference centre is the largest in the Matabeleland South region, accommodating up to 700 guests, cinema-style or 450 banquet-style. It is fully air-conditioned and equipped with modern AV technology including a PA system, overhead projector, and whiteboard. Conference packages include catering (morning and afternoon teas, lunch), bottled water, cordials, mints, notepads, and pens. It's ideal for corporate functions, seminars, weddings, and large-scale events.
DZ: What was the significance of Zebra Hilltop Lodge hosting the inaugural Beitbridge Business Expo, and what impact did it have?
BMM: Hosting the inaugural Beitbridge Business Expo was a proud milestone for us. It positioned Zebra Hilltop Lodge as a central hub for business and networking in the region. The event attracted entrepreneurs, investors, and government stakeholders, creating new opportunities for local growth and showcasing the lodge’s capacity to handle major professional events with distinction.
DZ: What are some examples of the "unforgettable moments and memories" that the lodge strives to create for its guests? BMM: From surprise proposals on our hilltop deck to wildlife sightings, Zebra Hilltop Lodge creates moments that linger in the heart. We specialize in the details: a personalized welcome, a sunset toast, or a birthday cake delivered with song. It’s these touches that transform a stay into a story worth telling.
DZ: What does winning the "Silver Winner for Outstanding Hospitality Company" at the Zimbabwe CEO’s Network Awards 2025 mean for Zebra Hilltop Lodge?
BMM: Winning this award is a testament to our team’s dedication, resilience, and unwavering pursuit of excellence. As a young lodge, receiving such recognition from a national platform validates the hard work and vision that went into building Zebra Hilltop Lodge. It inspires us to aim even higher as we continue delivering world-class hospitality.
DZ: What specific elements contribute to the “calm, grounding, and quietly breathtaking” atmosphere experienced by guests as evening falls?
BMM: As the sun sets over the horizon and a warm golden hue blankets the landscape, a natural stillness takes over. The distant calls of wildlife and birds, the gentle breeze, and the scent of the bushveld combine to create a deeply grounding atmosphere. Our lighting is kept soft and ambient, inviting guests to slow down, breathe deeply, and just be.
DZ: How does the lodge plan to build on its recent award and continue its journey towards “excellence, passion, and many more milestones”?
BMM: We’re committed to continuous growth, training, and innovation. From enhancing staff development programs to expanding our leisure offerings, every step we take is guided by our passion for guest satisfaction. We are also exploring sustainability initiatives that align luxury with eco-conscious practices, ensuring that our future is as bright as our past is proud.
DZ: Beyond the formal facilities, what less-tangible aspects contribute to Zebra Hilltop Lodge being described as a “sanctuary” and a “hilltop haven”?
BMM: It’s the feeling of being completely removed from the noise and rush of everyday life. The warm smiles of our staff, the serenity of nature all around, and the personalized care each guest receives create an atmosphere of peace and belonging. Zebra Hilltop Lodge is more than a destination; it’s a restorative experience.
DZ: What initiatives or future plans does Zebra Hilltop Lodge have to enhance its offering and maintain its position as a leading hospitality destination?
BMM: We’re excited to develop new recreational features including a golf course, zip line, quad biking trails, a BMX track, and a swimming pool with a water slide. Plans for a campsite are also in motion to accommodate adventure travellers and nature lovers. These additions aim to create a more inclusive destination where luxury, family fun, and outdoor adventure coexist.

Whether you're seeking a peaceful weekend getaway or a convenient stopover on your travels across Zimbabwe, Sun Valley offers the perfect blend of comfort, nature, and hospitality.
A Place with a Story
The story of Sun Valley is one of family, heritage, and heart. It all began when Grandpa Charles Stewart journeyed from Scotland and founded Charles Stewart Day Old Chicks on a modest farm along Pickstone Road.
In the 1960s, his son Chuck Stewart moved the operation to Sun Valley Farm, where it continued to thrive.
Then in 2000, Chuck’s nephew, Darrell Waterfall, took over the reins—ushering in a new chapter for the family legacy.
Fate brought another twist to the tale when Katie Turner, along with her two children, arrived in Chegutu in 2015. A chance meeting with Darrell soon blossomed into a love story, and by 2020, Katie had made Sun Valley her home.
Fuelled by a passion for hosting and design, she transformed the "West Wing" of the farmhouse into a cozy guest space— welcoming friends, family, and visitors from near and far.
The overwhelming response sparked the creation of Sun Valley Farm Guest House, a warm and welcoming retreat nestled in the heart of a working farm.

A MAJOR PUSH FOR GERMAN TOURISM
Text by Martin Chemhere
Zimbabwe's vibrant tourism sector recently took centre stage in Munich, Germany, during a high-impact training workshop designed to captivate and inform leading German tour operators and travel agents. The event, a collaborative effort between the Zimbabwe Tourism Office and key industry partners Africa Albida, Machaba Safaris, and Imvelo Safari Lodges, aimed to significantly boost Zimbabwe's footprint in one of Europe's most crucial source markets.

Participants were immersed in the country's unique blend of rich cultural experiences, from ancient traditions to vibrant contemporary arts. The session also highlighted iconic wildlife encounters within Zimbabwe's renowned national parks and conservancies, showcasing the unparalleled safari opportunities available. Beyond traditional attractions, the workshop emphasized Zimbabwe's emerging reputation for gourmet cuisine and its strong commitment to sustainable travel practices, appealing to the growing demand for responsible tourism.
A core objective of the workshop was to equip German tour operators and travel agents with vital insights necessary to confidently promote Zimbabwe. This included detailed information on in-country logistics, ensuring smooth and efficient travel for their clients.
Crucially, comprehensive briefings on safety protocols and measures were provided, addressing any potential concerns and building confidence in Zimbabwe as a secure and welcoming destination.
The participating Zimbabwean partners, Africa Albida, Machaba Safaris, and Imvelo Safari Lodges, played a pivotal role by showcasing their world-class safari packages and conservation-driven lodge offerings, demonstrating the high standards of accommodation and experiences available.
Beyond the informative presentations, the event successfully fostered meaningful partnerships between Zimbabwean tourism stakeholders and their German counterparts.
This direct engagement inspired immense confidence in Zimbabwe as a top travel choice for German tourists, laying a strong foundation for future collaborations. The momentum generated from the workshop is already being leveraged through follow-up campaigns and familiarization (fam) trips, with German operators and agents invited to experience Zimbabwe firsthand.
