A Decade of Wild Freedom:

Free 2 Be Wild Wildlife Sanctuary Celebrates 10 Years of Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release Text by Martin Chemhere

The Genesis of Free 2 Be Wild

Nestled amidst the vibrant savannah hills and forests of Burnside, Bulawayo, the Free 2 Be Wild Wildlife Sanctuary (FTBW) quietly marks a milestone achievement: 10 years of providing a haven for animals in need. Celebrations to mark the anniversary include the release of a troop of 15 rescued baboons, cared for at FTBW, back into the wild in collaboration with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife. From a dream born in the heart of a passionate individual, (founder and director Baye Pigors) to a thriving sanctuary teeming with life, the journey has been paved with dedication, resilience, and unwavering love for the wild. Baye founded FTBW in 2014 at the age of 22, and over the years the centre has released over 500 other rescued animals back into the wild. To date, the centre has saved the lives of hundreds of animals, educated thousands of mainly young school-going children, and provided space for volunteers to learn, and for local and international visitors seeking for that special and close-knit interaction with wildlife under rehabilitation. “We are the first primate rehabilitation centre to be oriented specifically to the rehab and release of African primates. The success rate of primate releases in Southern Africa – carried out by qualified operators – is an admirable 97%,” she said.

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

The story of FTBW begins with Baye Pigors, a former tour guide whose life intertwined with animals from a young age. Witnessing firsthand the plight of injured, orphaned, and illegally kept wildlife ignited a spark within them. The dream of creating a sanctuary, a space where these animals could receive care, recover, and potentially return to the wild, blossomed. Fuelled by unwavering determination and a growing network of supporters, Baye embarked on a mission to make the dream a reality. In 2013, amidst challenges and bureaucratic hurdles, FTBW opened its doors, welcoming its first residents: a pair of orphaned owlets in addition to Umfazi, the orphaned boon. The organisation was later officially registered in 2014.

Humble Beginnings The initial years were marked by tireless efforts. With limited resources and a dedicated team of volunteers, the sanctuary slowly expanded its infrastructure, building enclosures, acquiring medical equipment, and fostering partnerships with veterinarians and wildlife experts. Each rescued animal brought its own unique story, requiring specialized care and rehabilitation tailored to their specific needs. Over time, FTBW transformed into a haven for a diverse array of wildlife. From majestic birds of prey soaring through the sky to playful primates swinging through the trees, the

sanctuary became a vibrant tapestry of life. Each resident arrived with a distinct history: orphaned cubs separated from their mothers, confiscated animals from illegal trade, and injured creatures nursed back to health. Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release The core mission of FTBW has always been threefold: rescue, rehabilitation, and release. Rescuing animals from a variety of situations, including poaching, illegal pet trade, and habitat loss, forms the first crucial step. The sanctuary provides immediate care, addressing injuries, malnutrition, and psychological trauma.

10

The rehabilitation process is often lengthy and painstaking. Dedicated staff, veterinarians, and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure each animal receives the necessary medical attention, nutritional support, and speciesspecific enrichment. The ultimate goal, however, remains to release animals back into their natural habitats, allowing them to reclaim their wild independence. “The joy of witnessing a rehabilitated animal soar back into the sky, scamper back into the forest, or return to the ocean is unparalleled. Each release serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of the team, and a beacon of hope for the future of wildlife conservation,” said the founder of the sanctuary. Educating and Inspiring FTBW’s impact extends beyond direct animal care. The sanctuary serves as an educational hub, raising awareness about the threats faced by wildlife, the importance of conservation, and the individual efforts that can make a difference. Educational programs, volunteer opportunities, and community outreach initiatives connect people with the wonders of the animal kingdom and empower them to become advocates for change. The centre is actively changing the perception of primates from being considered nuisances to being recognized as valuable contributors to ecosystems. Their efforts in education include a school program that teaches children about the significance of primates and how to coexist with them. Additionally, they plan to extend their impact by launching a program for villages affected by primate crop raiding, focusing on finding sustainable solutions to mitigate conflicts and protect both the livelihoods of the villagers and the primates. The sanctuary is making a significant impact by providing a haven for injured, orphaned, and confiscated animals and birds. This is crucial at a time when wildlife species, including the critically endangered pangolin, are facing a rapid decline and need a second chance to thrive in their natural habitats. DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

Milestones As FTBW celebrates its tenth anniversary, it reflects on a decade of remarkable achievements. Thousands of animals have received care and a second chance at life. Countless individuals have been touched by the sanctuary’s mission, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for wildlife. Throughout their journey, FTBW has collaborated with numerous organizations, including Nikela, people who help conservationists, which was established by the dynamic duo of Margrit and Russ Harris. The Harris couple’s invaluable support in spreading awareness about the sanctuary, their generous donations, and their assistance in facilitating releases have left a lasting impact on its work. In 2021, the organisation made a significant accomplishment by partnering with Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife to release a troop of rescued vervets into a national park in Zimbabwe. This release marked a historic event, as it was the first recorded troop reintroduction in Zimbabwe since the 1970s when a troop of monkeys was released onto an island in Kariba. Under the authority of Zimparks, FTBW is a recognized organization with the responsibility of rescuing, rehabilitating, releasing orphaned animals, and providing care for injured wildlife. In her mission to provide a home for and to rehabilitate suffering primates and other wildlife species, Baye duly received the coveted ‘Unsung Conservation Hero’s Award 2016’ from by Africa Geographic. 11

12

“However, the journey is far from over. The threats to wildlife persist, and the need for rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation remains critical. The centre continues to strive for a future where all animals can thrive in their natural habitats, free from exploitation and harm,” notes Baye. Call to Action The tenth anniversary of FTBW serves as an opportunity not only to celebrate past achievements but also to look towards the future with renewed commitment. The sanctuary invites individuals and communities to join their mission in various ways: •

Support their work: Donations, volunteering opportunities, and sponsorships allow the sanctuary

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

• •

to continue providing vital care and rehabilitation services. Raise awareness: Spreading the word about the sanctuary’s mission and the threats faced by wildlife can inspire others to take action. Make responsible choices: Supporting ethical wildliferelated businesses, reducing our ecological footprint, and advocating for stronger wildlife protection policies can create a ripple effect of positive change.

As FTBW embarks on the next chapter, the hope remains the same: a world where humans and animals coexist in harmony, and all creatures can roam free in their natural habitat. By joining hands and taking collective action.

Zimbabwe's Treasures at Your Own Pace Text by Perry Kaande

Zimbabwe is a stunning country with a diverse landscape that includes national parks, wildlife reserves as well as scenic mountains and valleys. It is also home to a wide

variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffalos. Selfdrive safaris are a great way to experience the magic of the land. One of the main

benefits of selfdrive safaris is the flexibility they offer. You are free to choose your own itinerary and set your own schedule, allowing you to explore at your own pace and

discover hidden gems that other tourists may miss. You can stop and start as you please and spend as much or as little time at each destination as you wish. Self-drive safaris

are also generally more affordable than guided ones, especially if you are traveling with a group. You can save money by renting your own vehicle and cooking your own meals.

Another benefit of self-drive safaris is the independence they give you. You are not tied to a group or schedule and you can explore at your own pace.

17

18

This can be a great way to relax and de-stress and to really appreciate the beauty of the wilderness. Also, self-drive safaris allow you to immerse yourself in the bush. You can drive through game parks and reserves, and see animals up close in their natural habitat. This can be a truly aweinspiring and unforgettable experience. Tips for planning a self-drive safari •

Plan your itinerary: A well-planned itinerary is essential for a fulfilling self-drive safari. This involves deciding which game parks and reserves you want to visit and how much time you intend to spend at each destination. Additionally, booking your accommodation in advance is highly recommended, particularly if you are traveling during peak season. Choose the right vehicle: When renting a vehicle for a self-drive expedition, it is important to choose one that is suitable for the terrain and conditions. A four-

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

wheel drive vehicle is essential, as some roads and trails can be rough. You may also want to consider renting a vehicle with a roof rack so that you can store luggage and other supplies. •

Pack for all types of weather: The weather can be unpredictable, so it is important to pack for all types of conditions. Be sure to bring sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and a raincoat. You should also pack warm clothes for the evenings, as it can get cold in some areas. Be aware of your surroundings: Self-drive safaris can be

dangerous if you are not aware of your surroundings. Be sure to stay on designated roads and trails, and be on the lookout for wildlife. You should also avoid driving at night, as this can be especially dangerous. Be prepared for all eventualities: This includes packing a first-aid kit, a spare tyre and enough food and water to last for several days. Respect the wildlife: Remember that you are a guest in the wilderness. Be respectful of the flora and fauna. Do not feed the animals and do not leave any litter behind.

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

Bring binoculars: Binoculars are essential for getting a good look at the animals. Be sure to choose a pair with good magnification and clarity.

Bring a field guide: A field guide can help you identify the different animals and plants that you see on your safari.

Be patient: It takes time and patience to spot wildlife on a self-drive safari.

• •

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see any animals right away. Just keep driving and observing and eventually, you will be rewarded with sightings.

Travel with a friend: Traveling with a friend can make your self-drive safari more fun and safer. You can share the driving responsibilities and keep each other company.

Drive safely: It is important to drive safely and responsibly when on a self-drive safari. Be aware of the road conditions and wildlife and obey the speed limit.

Bring a camera: You will want to capture all of the amazing sights and sounds of your self-drive safari. A camera with a zoom lens is ideal in order to get close-up shots of the animals.

With the flexibility to explore at your leisure and craft your own itinerary, self-drive safaris provide a more intimate and authentic connection with Zimbabwe’s remarkable wildlife than guided tours can offer. 19

Hwange National Park is part of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), the world’s largest trans-frontier conservation area, established to promote conservation and tourism development.

Speaking at an event to officially launch the project, Hon. Mangaliso Ndlovu, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, said the complex would significantly improve the visitor experience at Zimbabwe’s flagship park. “This new complex will greatly increase the visibility of Hwange National Park, improve the visitor experience, enhance security and help reposition the park as a competitive and must-visit destination,” said Ndlovu. Since 2019, the ZimParks-IFAW conservation partnership has concentrated on improving park infrastructure, uplifting community livelihoods, strengthening law enforcement, and developing tourism. “IFAW’s long-term partnership with ZimParks is to transform Hwange NP into a well-managed and well-protected park that can serve as a haven for wildlife and an economic engine for Zimbabwe,” says Alleta Nyahuye, IFAW’s Director for Zimbabwe. “As we forge ahead with this important mission of restoring Hwange NP to its former glory, we are excited about the journey ahead and remain optimistic that our interventions will contribute to the recovery and growth of Zimbabwe’s tourism sector.” Earlier this year, the partnership between IFAW and ZimParks was extended for 25 years, with an expected investment of USD 50 million. The new complex will serve as a high-security checkpoint with smart-camera technology systems to fortify efforts to prevent the illegal trafficking of wildlife products. Victoria Falls, a natural wonder of the world, is renowned for its sheer grandeur and the thunderous roar of its cascading waters. While there are numerous ways to experience this awe-inspiring spectacle, one of the most exhilarating and immersive options is a microlight flight.

An Unforgettable Microlight Adventure Text by Perry Kaande

Imagine yourself strapped into an open-air aircraft, the wind caressing your face as you ascend into the sky, the mighty Zambezi River snaking its way beneath you. As the microlight gains altitude, the vast expanse of Victoria Falls unfolds before your eyes, a panorama of breathtaking beauty. Although some people may see them as glorified kites with lawnmower engines, microlights, also known as ultralights, are light aircraft that offer an unparalleled aerial perspective of the landscape. They are small, open-air aircraft that provide a sense of freedom and connection with the elements. The microlight’s open design allows for an unobstructed view of the falls, revealing their intricate details and the sheer power of the water as it plunges over the cliff face.

29

30

Wild Horizons on the Zimbabwean side and Batoka Sky on the Zambian side offer microlight flights over the Falls and Zambezi throughout the year, subject to availability. The flight takes off and lands at the Batoka Sky Aerodrome. Flights are scheduled for the early morning and late afternoon due to favourable weather conditions and are postponed in case of storms or high winds. Comfortable clothing is recommended, and scarves, jackets with belts or ties should be avoided to prevent any loose items from snagging during the flight. Participants must be at least 12 years old and have no specific fitness requirements. The maximum weight for passengers is 100 kilograms. Flights last approximately 15-30 minutes and can accommodate one passenger and a pilot.

The spray from the falls creates a mesmerizing mist, often refracting sunlight into a dazzling rainbow, earning Victoria Falls its moniker “Mosi-oa-Tunya” – “the smoke that thunders”. Moreover, there is also the opportunity of getting an aerial view of the gigantic crocodiles in the Zambezi River. A microlight flight over Victoria Falls and the River is not just about sightseeing; it’s an adrenaline-pumping adventure. The lightweight aircraft manoeuvres with agility, allowing you to soar over the churning waters, feel the rush of wind and experience the falls from a perspective that few get to witness. As you descend, the Batoka Gorge, carved by the Zambezi River over millions of years, stretches out beneath you, a testament to nature’s immense power. The surrounding landscape, a patchwork of lush vegetation and rocky outcrops, adds to the visual feast. The microlight operators adhere to strict safety regulations and employ experienced pilots who are trained to handle the unique challenges of flying. Additionally, passengers are provided with safety instructions before each flight. Microlight flying is a safe and enjoyable activity when conducted by experienced pilots and reputable operators. Always prioritize safety by choosing a reputable microlight company with a proven track record of excellence. Ensure that the pilots are fully qualified and experienced and that the microlights are wellmaintained and meet all safety standards. Soaring through the air, microlight flights provide unparalleled, unobstructed, and awe-inspiring vistas of Victoria Falls and the magnificent gorge that the mighty Zambezi River has meticulously sculpted into the landscape over thousands of years.

Stanford Derere

- MASTER BIRD SCULPTOR Text by Martin Chemhere

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

Several individual stone sculptors have contributed to the development of the art form, and among them the name Stanford Derere deserves mention. A master at sculpting birds in abstract shapes, characterised by spread-out wings, he has made a name at home and outside. Born in 1956 at Chapeyama Village in Makosa, Mutoko, in a family of eight boys, he used to spend a lot of time playing with clay as a kid, triggering his early interest in art. That early exposure was carried over to primary school, where he concentrated more on sketching. He says that this was during the comic book era and he was

getting more interested in drawing and painting. Receiving the Certificate of Excellence in 1988 for the piece ‘The Beekeeper’, demonstrated his understanding of the sculpture genre and showcased his artistic genius in his formative years as an artist. His sculptural depictions concentrate on birds, particularly swifts, in various stages of flight. The sculptures are a viewer’s marvel, especially with the birds in amazing motion, sometimes perched or on the ground. With deliberately little surface detail, his sculptures are assemblages of stone,

wood and metal delicately and masterly balanced. Of the three mediums, stone is dominant. His ability to showcase birds in all manner of motion brings an element of surprise to his sculptures. He has observed the movements since childhood in his village back home, and he continues to bring to the world what he knows best. In a world where wildlife is increasingly going extinct, his oeuvre of birds is an ode to enlightenment and conservation. Derere honed his artistic skills at the famed BAT Workshop, part of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. There, he was introduced to and experimented with a variety of materials in sculpture-making stone, metal and wood. Before joining the BAT Workshop, Stanford attended Peter Birch School of Art but unfortunately stopped midway due to financial constraints. At Peter Birch, he specialised in painting and printmaking, before trying out the sculpture genre. Practising stone sculpture for more than 40 years has seen him become one of the few elders and living legends of the stone sculpture movement.

Kazuma:

Secrets of the Safari Trail Less Travelled

I can’t help but smile when I think of my first road trips through Southern Africa. Packed into the truck, we’d hastily embark on dusty gravel roads, venturing deep into the bush with nothing more than a packed cool box and a bag full of biltong. The thrill of finding a remote, game-dotted paradise where we were the sole witnesses to nature’s dance, that’s where the true magic happened. Time quickly lost its grip, dictated only by the rising and setting sun.

Fast forward a few decades and I will admit that while I still love hitting the open road, camping rarely involves sleeping wild under the stars and preferably in a canvas Meru-style tent complete with ensuite shower. However, finding those rare spots or dates where crowds are yet to flock is still the objective. Now, I’m about to share a secret with you, a hidden gem tucked away from the masses, a piece of safari heaven I’m actually hesitant to reveal. But, as they say, secrets don’t stay hidden forever. DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

Welcome to Kazuma Forest Reserve. Some colleagues in the safari industry questioned my judgement. They argued that certain parks are renowned for a reason. However, for those seeking an intimate connection with the African wilderness, Kazuma checks all the boxes, especially for me: vast open savannahs, meandering sandy paths for tracking, and tranquil dams teeming with birdlife where you

can get out, stretch your legs and enjoy a relaxing sundowner. Our first night in Kazuma, we fell asleep to a mixture of lions roaring and the eerie cackle of hyenas in the distance. As I said – magic! Kazuma Forest Reserve, nestled in northern Botswana, weaves a captivating tale of history and wilderness. Established in 1934 as a protected area for timber production, it has morphed into a wildlife conservation stronghold.

DESTINATION ZW EDITION 7

Today, it’s celebrated for its rich biodiversity, including elephants, lions, buffalo, and a multitude of bird species. This reserve’s journey mirrors the evolution of African conservation, highlighting the delicate balance between local communities, wildlife preservation, and sustainable land management. Kazuma Forest Reserve showcases Africa’s natural heritage and the power of forward-thinking.

So, how do you get to Kazuma? Well, it’s part of a bustling wildlife corridor that connects Chobe National Park in Botswana with Hwange National Park and Kazuma Pan National Park in Zimbabwe. The best part? It’s incredibly accessible, making it a perfect complement to your African adventure. Whether you’re traveling from Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, Chobe National Park in Botswana, or the iconic Victoria Falls on the Zambezi

River, getting to Kazuma takes only an hour or two. A well-connected road network links these more notorious destinations, offering a remarkable extension to an African adventure. Kazuma Forest Reserve stands as a relatively untouched wilderness where the concept of “off the beaten path” doesn’t have to be far from the main tourist trail. What sets Kazuma apart is the overwhelming sense of exclusivity and pristine beauty. 41

It’s as if you’ve stumbled upon a secret haven known only to a select few, and each moment feels like a well-guarded treasure. In Kazuma, wildlife roams freely, and unfazed creating fantastic opportunities for intimate wildlife encounters. With only a handful of like-minded adventurers around, you can relish the luxury of solitude in this pristine wilderness.

The 23rd World Travel & Tourism Council Global Summit was recently held in Kigali, Rwanda from 1 to 3 November 2023. The annual global summit is the most influential travel and tourism event on the calendar, and this year, industry leaders once again gathered with key government representatives to continue aligning efforts to support the sector’s recovery and move beyond to a safer, more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future.

Rwanda and the African continent, where the travel and tourism industries are looking to maintain an impressive recovery trajectory.

Speaking at the opening of the summit, WTTC President & CEO Julia Simpson revealed that the global travel and tourism sector is making a robust comeback, bouncing back to the pre-pandemic vigour of 2019. regions including Africa recovering faster than previously expected, with Asia-Pacific leading the way. “Our latest data highlights our sector’s enduring appeal and resilience and is recovering faster than anticipated,” said Simpson. Taking the event to Africa for the first time recognised the phenomenal growth the travel and tourism sector across the continent has witnessed in recent years. Simpson said: “Rwanda is the perfect venue for our Global Summit, as

the sector embarks on a significant new chapter. Africa has the world’s youngest population and by 2033, $1 in every $13 created in Africa, will come from Travel & Tourism and 1 in 17 jobs will be in the sector. This demonstrates the huge potential the continent’s sector has for new jobs and new economic growth for young people across Africa.” Francis Gatare, CEO of the Rwanda Development Board, said: “We are proud to host the first ever WTTC Global Summit in Africa. While this important gathering will take

place in Rwanda, it is for the whole continent. Africa has some of the most spectacular tourism properties and experiences in the world, and the sector plays a significant role in the continent’s continued economic development by creating millions of jobs. “This year’s WTTC Global Summit will provide a great platform to build bridges across the tourism and travel ecosystem, and co-design a sustainable future for the sector to achieve its full potential.”

The latest Economic Impact Research from the global tourism body reveals a staggering ten year forecast for Africa’s travel and tourism sector.
