PRECIOUS PETS

When and how did Bailey come to join your family? Bailey

came to us during the COVID-19 pandemic. My husband and I both always knew we wanted a dog and our jobs became remote. It was the perfect time to fulfill our deepest wish! He’s been the perfect addition to our family and brings smiles and joy to others.

Is there a story behind your pet’s name? My husband is

Irish and I was having Bailey’s on the rocks one evening. So it felt fitting to name him after Bailey’s Irish Cream!

BAILEY THE MINI-GOLDENDOODLE BY RESIDENT JENNA DOOGAN

Bailey Bear Doogan celebrated his golden birthday on May 6! He is a Mini-Goldendoodle. Given his unique size and personality, we have a running joke that he is actually a polardoodle because he is OBSESSED with the snow (as featured on his Instagram, @bailey_ah).

Specialized in Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy to Restore Control, Confidence, and Comfort.

What’s the one trait or behavior that makes Bailey stand out from the rest? Bailey doesn’t go for walks, he

goes for “moseys.” He takes his time when wandering downtown Arlington Heights. He frequents most businesses and begs for attention. Some of his favorites include Coco & Blu, Obsessions Boutique, Special Eyes Optical, Hey Nonny, Salsa 17, Ttowa, Sedona by Manzano Jewelers, Scratchboard Kitchen, Passero, Bentley’s, and Starbucks.

Does Bailey have any unique talents or tricks? He is

environmentally conscious and breaks down cardboard boxes for recycling!

Tell us about your favorite memory with your pet. One of my favorite memories of Bailey is when my husband and I were both working from home. My husband began to prepare a quick lunch for the two of us. He set hot dogs on the kitchen counter. My husband stepped away to go answer a work call. Some time went by and Bailey suddenly burst into the home office, put a half-eaten hotdog by my husband’s feet, and smiled up at him. That’s when we realized Bailey had already eaten two hotdogs and this was the third one. We couldn’t comprehend how he did it since Bailey is short and has little legs! We welcomed the defeat, chopped the remaining half-eaten hotdog, and put it in Bailey’s food bowl. He won - he deserved it! Where does your pet love to hang out in the neighborhood? Who are your pet’s favorite playmates in the neighborhood? Bailey’s favorite time is alfresco in downtown Arlington Heights! He loves spending time on the patios outdoors, people watching, and getting attention. Some of his favorite dog playmates in the neighborhood are Mocha, Truffle, Fernando, and Mia.

September 2026

Are there any local parks Bailey particularly enjoys visiting? He loves Melas Park Canine

Commons and Moraine Beach in Highland Park.

What is your pet’s pet peeve? Bailey’s pet peeve is when he knows a place has snacks for him, but he is not given “approval” to walk over. He gets quite disgruntled about it.

reparing for a successful transfer of wealth to your loved ones starts with a comprehensive estate plan. The next phase is crucial as well: sharing the details with your family and heirs. To manage expectations and ensure a smooth transition of wealth, it’s essential to have open conversations and share information about your plans while you’re still able to do so. Whether you have modest savings or significant wealth, preparing the next generation to handle their inheritance is a responsibility that shouldn’t be neglected. Here’s why communication is crucial: • Prevents misunderstandings: Clear communication can help avoid conflicts and misinterpretations of your wishes. • Educates beneficiaries: It provides an opportunity to teach financial literacy and responsible wealth management. • Manages expectations: Open discussions can help family members understand and accept your decisions. • Allows for adjustments: Conversations may reveal insights that could lead to beneficial changes in your plan. People need to overcome the reluctance to discussing wealth and matters related to death. Ignoring these topics can lead to emotional turmoil and financial disputes despite best intentions. Try starting with a family meeting. Gather your family for a general discussion about your estate plan. Create a comfortable, calm environment that allows for open dialogue. Begin with an overview of your estate planning goals, then address common inheritance pitfalls you hope to avoid. Be sure to encourage questions and listen actively to concerns. Discussing your estate plan well in advance of the reading of your will can prevent potential legal disputes, preserve family relationships and provide a practical financial roadmap for your heirs. If you need assistance in developing a communication strategy for your estate plan or want to update your existing plan, contact us at (312) 578-9300 or info@madonia.com.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS Jessica M. Photography

Family members: Chris and Beth Deiter have 2 children: Cecilia, 16, is a junior and Elliott, 14, is a freshman, both at Prospect High School. In school, Cecilia is involved in all-things-performance, from singing to acting to speech team. This interest in public speaking has also inspired her to host an annual discussion at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library that brings women’s voices together to highlight how barriers can be broken and how we can create equitable workplaces for all employees. Elliott’s curiosity and proficiency in understanding computers has led to an interest in video game design and robotics, something that he is likely to pursue in high school. When Chris isn’t working or playing bass in his band, Valius, and when Beth isn’t volunteering, they enjoy spending time with their kids and their dog Scout dining at Arlington Alfresco, relaxing at Ravinia, or exploring a local Maker’s Market. What brought you to Arlington Heights? We’ve been together for 26

S AY H E L L O T O T H E

years (married for 19). Although we both grew up in Buffalo Grove, we attended different high schools and didn’t formally meet until we lived on the same dorm floor at the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign. At school, our relationship grew stronger, enough to sustain a longdistance relationship while we each earned our graduate degrees, Chris in Illinois and Beth in Minnesota. Once reunited, we were eager to get married and start a family, always knowing that we wanted Arlington Heights to be our home. Not only is Arlington Heights close to our extended families, but its charm, walkability, schools, and neighbors made it the perfect place to plant roots.

F A M I LY !

What are your professions? Chris is a Senior Mechanical Engineer at EPIQ Solutions in Rolling Meadows, and after 20 years as a speech therapist, Beth has recently shifted her role to that of fulltime Executive Director of the nonprofit she founded in 2018, C.I.T.Y. of Support. C.I.T.Y. stands for “Children In Therapy and You.” They recently opened the first physical location for their nonprofit’s programs which they fund by hosting events and selling gently-used toys and books at the GENEROC.I.T.Y. Toy Shop here in Arlington Heights.

The Deiter family on a vacation together.

Do you have any pets? Scout is a 6-year-

old pup representing a combination of over 13 breeds, according to her genetic testing. She is an expert couch-lounger and lover of all things edible, especially cheese. Besides going for walks, she is the most excited when the doorbell rings, the refrigerator opens, or when she hears we are going for a ride to Canine Commons, the local dog park.

What are your favorite places in the community? In Arlington Heights, we

can really travel all around the world without leaving town. Our family enjoys eating everywhere from the Korean cuisine of Ttowa to the Irish fare of Peggy Kinnane’s. As the only coffee-drinker in the family, Beth’s favorite places to grab a cup of coffee with friends are at Coco & Blu and Gerry’s Cafe, both of which have such cozy, small-town vibes with great food & drinks.

Do you participate in any activities in Arlington Heights? As Beth’s nonprofit

grew, she relied on her neighbors and community connections to help support. The Arlington Heights Memorial Library worked with their organization to host monthly Developmental Playgroups as well as to create the state’s only Accessibility Support Collection. Coco & Blu has consistently stocked their DIY greeting cards to sell as a local fundraiser, and Something Blue Photography has taken the most beautiful photos of C.I.T.Y.

families as part of their “C.I.T.Y. Close-Up” program. The support provided to new organizations and businesses in Arlington Heights is truly remarkable. Beth has been overwhelmed with the generosity of community members when she attends the library’s Nonprofit Exchange and Coffee & Connect meetings, Women Entrepreneur Collective gatherings, and the AH Chamber’s events.

What’s your favorite part of living in the community? We have had the most

wonderful experience with District 25, and we feel a very strong connection to the teachers and staff. Attending Halloween

parades, poetry readings, school plays, and volleyball games are some of the greatest memories we have, but nothing made us happier than when we held hands with our kids while walking them to school in the early mornings--a truly idyllic Arlington Heights experience. Although Elliott graduated from 8th grade this year, and our time in the district is technically done, we will always be grateful for the way the teachers shaped our children Scan this QR with their enthusiasm, code to nominate a family to appear creativity, patience, on the cover of and kindness. WHAT’S THE GOOD WORD?

2026 AHML Foundation scholarship recipients (from left) Eric Cisneros, Savannah Manuel, German Ramirez, and Nikola Van De Mark.

District 214 Students Earn Trade School Scholarships BY ANDREA MILLER, AHML FOUNDATION

The Arlington Heights Memorial Library Foundation recently announced the winners of its 2026 trade school scholarship for District 214 students. This is the fourth year the Foundation has offered this scholarship, and the number of submissions was higher than ever. “We’re continuously impressed by the makers in our community, many of whom take advantage of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Makerplace. We’re honored to encourage these young adults who are pursuing a career in the trades and appreciate the donations toward our scholarship fund,” said Lauree Harp, Founder and Chair of the Foundation. This year’s winners include four graduates across District 214 schools. Nikola Van De Mark, winner of the Jeffrey P. Moroney Scholarship, is a student at John Hersey High School with plans to study aviation maintenance. German Ramirez, winner of 20

September 2026

the Hartnett Family Scholarship, is a Buffalo Grove High School senior who will continue his automotive technology education at Triton College this fall. Eric Cisneros is a student at Elk Grove High School who will use the scholarship to continue his culinary training at Kendall College. Lastly, Savannah Manuel, a Prospect High School student, is preparing to launch a career as an esthetician through Tricoci Beauty University. The Foundation, which supports the Arlington Heights Memorial Library and Makerplace, aims to inspire and promote education in skilled trades through its scholarship offerings. This year, the Foundation awarded four scholarships, each valued at $2,500. Among these were scholarships funded by friends and family of the late Arlington Heights resident and maker Jeffrey Moroney and the Hartnett Family Scholarship, sponsored by John Hartnett, a former member of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Foundation Board. These scholarships were available to District 214 students and alumni aged 17 to 25 who are interested in pursuing careers in skilled trades that require advanced training other than a four-year bachelor’s degree. Eligible fields include plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, HVAC, machining, welding, cosmetology, and more. The Foundation will begin accepting applications for the 2027 scholarship in March of next year. For more information on the scholarship and its criteria, visit www.ahmlfoundation.org/scholarship.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE The Butz family at the 2025 Meg’s Legacy golf outing.

Megan Butz, the namesake of Meg’s Legacy.

Meg’s Legacy Brings Hope to At-Risk Youth BY DR. BETH SHERMAN, MEG’S LEGACY BOARD MEMBER

Why is this program so important to our community? We’ve heard from many residents that the organizations that we fund are making an impact in local communities, including Arlington Heights. We recently awarded a first-time grant to Omni Youth Services, which serves Arlington Heights, along with other nearby suburbs. How to get involved: On September 7, we will hold our 4th annual golf outing and dinner. There are several ways to get involved - by attending our events, by becoming a sponsor, or by volunteering. megslegacyofhope.org

Tell us about your cause. Megan Butz Legacy of Hope, or Meg’s

Legacy, is an all-volunteer organization formed by the Butz family in June 2023 to honor their late daughter and sister Megan. Its mission is to strengthen the mental health of at-risk teens and young adults through mental health programming and support. We focus primarily on suicide prevention and mental health treatment. Another initiative is stigma-busting; despite gains in the past decade, there remains a stigma surrounding mental health and particularly suicide and suicide prevention.

What kind of programs does Meg’s Legacy offer? We provide grants to local organizations doing the difficult work of helping youth with their mental health. Since its inception, Meg’s Legacy has supported groups with more than $625,000 in grants to help them continue their life-changing and lifesaving work, including direct counseling and suicide prevention education and training. We just recently funded 13 organizations, including those that serve Arlington Heights youth and families. What drew you to this work? Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 11-14, and the third leading cause of death for youth ages 15 - 24, according to the Illinois Department of Health. Working with Meg’s Legacy, I can make a larger impact in a way that I can’t in one on one sessions. 22

September 2026

The all-volunteer Meg’s Legacy team works together to provide grants to nonprofits providing youth mental health services.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

What’s your proudest moment? In 2011, at the age of 45, I ran

my first marathon – the Wisconsin Marathon in Kenosha. I loved it! Since then, I’ve completed five Chicago Marathons and enjoyed each one! My proudest moment was running the 2014 Chicago Marathon with a finish time of 4:12.

Who is someone you admire? Pamela Chapman Markle. She is a 67-year-old world class ultra-marathoner, cancer survivor, nurse anesthetist, and single mom. There are days I think I’m too old for this sport, and then I think of Pamela! What do you hope to accomplish someday? As I approach 60, I want to continue to run, but in a much safer and smarter way. I’ve endured several injuries. I’ve had extensive physical therapy and have learned so much! I don’t necessarily envision myself running a marathon again, but I would love to run some half marathons and other races. I would like to try some races in other, warm weather states!

Tina running the Chicago Marathon - her proudest moment!

TINA KANTER BY RESIDENT TINA KANTER

Tell us about yourself. I’m Tina Kanter and I live on Wilshire Lane. I’m a runner. I started at 15. I’m 59, about to turn 60, so on and off for about 44 years. What inspired you to get started? At 15, I heard about an afterschool running activity at my high school, Maine South, called Sole Striders. I joined and instantly fell in love! I ran with other young women from my high school, and it was a great way to de-stress after a long school day. What do you enjoy most about running? I enjoy the time to

think, to unwind and enjoy the runner’s high I always feel while running and of course, after I’ve completed a run. I’m a fan of running alone and it’s very therapeutic for me. I truly enjoy running the streets of our town and when friends honk and wave!

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

ALCHEMY STUDIO Aesthetics & Wellness Allison O’Donnell is a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, wife to Danny, and mom to two wonderful children. Arlington Heights has truly become home for Allison and her family, and she’s also the proud owner of Alchemy Studio Aesthetics & Wellness.

Tell us about your background. I’ve wanted to work in healthcare for as long as I can remember. Ever since kindergarten, I dreamed of becoming a doctor or a nurse, and becoming a Nurse Practitioner turned out to be the perfect fit. What inspired you to start your business? Opening Alchemy Studio

Aesthetics & Wellness was about creating the kind of practice I always envisioned: one where patients feel welcomed, educated, and genuinely cared for. The name Alchemy represents transformation; not changing who you are, but helping you become the healthiest, most confident version of yourself.

What types of services does your business offer? While we offer aesthetic

treatments, regenerative therapies, wellness services, medical-grade skincare, and medical weight loss, what truly sets Alchemy Studio apart is the patient experience. My goal is for every patient to leave feeling informed, confident, and excited because they feel like the very best version of themselves.

How does your business connect with and contribute to the local community? As both a local business

owner and a mom, giving back to the Arlington Heights community is something

26

September 2026

I value deeply. As Alchemy Studio Aesthetics & Wellness continues to grow, my commitment remains the same: to provide exceptional, personalized care while creating a place where every patient feels welcomed and valued. It is a privilege to care for the people who make this Arlington Heights community so special. 89 S. ABSOLUTELY ARLINGTON HEIGHTS

Scarlet McIlrath Named Miss Illinois Teen USA 2026 BY RESIDENT SCARLET MCILRATH

my favorite part of the competition was the friendships I made. Being surrounded by such talented, supportive, and inspiring young women was incredible. We cheered each other on every step of the way, and I know many of those friendships will last a lifetime.

What advice would you give others who are interested in competing in pageants? I would tell them to work hard, prepare as much as they can, and believe in themselves. At the same time, don’t put too much pressure on the outcome. Most importantly, be yourself because your uniqueness is what makes you special.

What other hobbies or interests do you have? I grew up doing competitive gymnastics, and in high school I was part of my school’s co-ed competitive cheerleading team. I also enjoy going to yoga classes, spending time with friends and family, and finding new ways to challenge myself.

What are your plans for after your reign? After my year as Miss Illinois Teen USA, I’ll be attending Arizona State University to study business. I’m excited to see where both my education and this title take me.

Do you have any favorite spots in Arlington Heights?

Scarlet will attend Arizona State University this fall.

Arlington Heights native Scarlet McIlrath was recently named Miss Illinois Teen USA 2026.

What is your connection to Arlington Heights? I was born and raised in Arlington Heights. It’s where I grew up, went to school, made lifelong friends, and created so many memories. The community has always been incredibly supportive, and I’m proud to represent the town that helped shape me.

pageantry, and eventually I decided to take a chance and compete.

What was your favorite moment from the competition? Of course hearing my name called as the winner was an unforgettable moment, but

Definitely! One of my favorite places is Sweet T’s Bakery because I absolutely love their cookies and cakes. It’s one of those places that always feels special to visit. I also love spending time around downtown Arlington Heights because it’s such a welcoming community with so many great local businesses and familiar faces.

Scarlet won her title in May at Illinois State University.

How did you get involved with the Miss Teen USA pageant? I was inspired by a previous pageant winner who was on my cheerleading team. She was confident, kind, and always carried herself so well. Watching her experience made me curious about STROLL Scarsdale

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Rocco’s Review

Both the Arlington Heights and Chicago Bird’s Nest locations are famous for their wings.

Bird’s Nest

BY RESIDENT ROCCO SMERIGLIO

Rocco and his neighbors enjoyed the hospitality of Bird’s Nest’s owners and staff.

If you are a sports fan like me, this summer has given us the thrill of World Cup soccer, great baseball from both the Cubs and the White Sox, and so much more to be excited about. In June, I asked a few friends from the neighborhood to join me at Bird’s Nest, located at 11 W. Davis Street, to take in a few World Cup games as well as a Cubs game along with great food and drink. Turns out there was no better place to do it than Bird’s Nest. As many in Arlington Heights know, 11 W. Davis is the former site of the legendary Dunton House. Bird’s Nest owners Brent Khazei and Kip Koppers took on a complete construction overhaul and opened this fresh feeling establishment with a friendly and upbeat vibe with open air on great weather days. While known for their wings - and yes, they are great - so many other food selections that we tried exceeded expectations and are the items that have brought us back again. The steak panini is a top-grade tender steak that not only melts in your mouth, but is a great value at $18. While Bird’s Nest is not a classic Chicago beef stand, the Italian beef sandwich brought very high marks, and the secret is quicky getting out. The pesto chicken panini also was a solid selection, as was the pulled pork

The Italian beef sandwich is a classic dinner option.

sandwich. If sandwiches and wings are not your favorite, pizzas and burgers are very popular choices as well. A wonderful variety of draft, imports and craft beers are available and be sure to check out the daily specials! Happy hour runs from 4pm to 6pm, and specialty cocktails are also available. Thank you to Brent and Kip for cooperating so gracefully with this visit and for bringing their concept from Lincoln Park to our community. It has been a wonderful addition to Davis Street and a welcoming first sight for Metra commuters.

Check Out Our Google Reviews “We recently had our second floor luxury vinyl installed by America’s Flooring Store after having our first floor done by them a couple of years ago, and once again, the experience was excellent from start to finish. Anna was incredibly helpful in guiding us to the perfect option to match our decor, and Santiago was prompt, professional, and easy to work with. Our installers, Jose and his dad, did a fantastic job—very skilled, clean, efficient, and attentive to every detail. We couldn’t be happier with the results. I highly recommend AFS to anyone looking to upgrade their flooring—you won’t be disappointed!”
