LEGAL MATTERS
Adding Retirement and Long-Term Care Into Your Estate Plan
P
eople want their future plans to account for healthcare needs, housing decisions, and financial flexibility as they age. To that end, estate planning is increasingly integrating retirement and long-term care planning into the plan. Incorporating long-term care (LTC) and retirement into your estate planning ensures your healthcare needs are funded without draining your legacy. Without a strategy, end-of-life medical costs can destroy accumulated wealth, as standard
Medicare does not cover extended custodial care. Things to consider to safeguard your assets and healthcare preferences.
PROTECTION. COMMITMENT. GROWTH.
We protect your interest with a fierce devotion to solutions that maximize your bottom line. We commit to the highest principles of integrity, excellence, and client services. We grow with you by evolving our service to accommodate your naturally changing conditions.

• Incapacity Planning: Establish a Healthcare Proxy/ Medical Power of Attorney and Living Will. • Asset Protection & Medicaid Trusts: To prevent the high cost of nursing homes from liquidating your estate, utilize Irrevocable Trusts. • Care Funding Vehicles: Incorporate LTC Insurance or hybrid life/LTC policies into your retirement cash flow. • Beneficiary Coordination: Retirement accounts (IRAs, 401(k)s) pass directly to beneficiaries and override wills. • Name a trusted individual to manage your financial accounts, pay bills, and execute estate or Medicaid strategies if you are unable to do so. There are steps to maintain financial security in retirement including budgeting for Long-Term Care costs, maintaining a sustainable withdrawal strategy, protecting against financial exploitation and updating your estate plan regularly. Taking these steps proactively ensures that your retirement savings provide for you during your lifetime A key goal of estate and retirement planning is ensuring that you have financial stability throughout your lifetime. With rising healthcare costs, longer life expectancies, and economic uncertainties, careful planning is necessary to avoid outliving your savings.

October 2026
say hello to
the kent family
FAMILY MEMBERS: John and Kate Kent and their daughters Ciara, Kayla, Grace and Jayna WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ARLINGTON HEIGHTS? Back
in 1999, I placed a personal ad in The Reader and Kate responded. We’ve been inseparable ever since. We moved to Arlington Heights in 2007 when our 4 daughters were 6 and under. All 4 daughters attended Patton, Thomas, and Hersey, so we were at each school for about 10 years combined! Now the kids are grown up, ages 19, 22, 24, and 25. John is the Assistant Governor for several area Rotary Clubs, and the past president of the Rotary Club of Arlington Heights. He also sings as a baritone with the Arlingtones, and teaches numismatics (the study and collecting of coins) in a variety of setting. Kate is a shamanic healer and offers sessions at Sacred Ground in Arlington Heights. Ciara is attending Roosevelt University to study Business/ Marketing. Kayla is a teaching assistant at Miner School with NSSEO, and she’s also going to make us grandparents in January! Grace completed her welding certification at Harper and is finishing up her associates degree while working at
Build-A-Bear at Woodfield Mall. Jayna is attending Kirkwood College in Iowa City to become a surgical technologist. She is also is a cheerleader. We have aways felt Arlington Heights is a great place to raise a family with great schools, parks, library, and community activities.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS? We have 4 dogs. Prince is a Bernese Mountain dog, weighs 135 pounds and likes to jump around! Bowie is an Australian Shepard with blue and brown eyes. Maui is a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix that thinks he’s the boss! Prezzy is a Pomeranian and is as cute as can be. WHAT SPECIAL TALENTS DO YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE? John sings, gardens and enjoys being a community volunteer. Kate is a shamanic healer and is certified in many holistic healing areas. Ciara loves to knit and crochet, play online games, and take long walks. Grace likes to craft and restore vintage toys.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES IN THE COMMUNITY? We like Salsa 17, walks around Lutheran Home, workouts at the ARC, and visits to the local coin shops. As a Rotarian and a Chamber of Commerce member, I visit most places in the community.
The Kent family when their daughters were growing up.
DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN ANY ACTIVITIES IN ARLINGTON HEIGHTS? As Rotarians, we sponsor the Santa Run and a golf outing at Lake Arlington. We also sponsor or participate in Night in the Heights, Harmony Fest, Volunteer Fair at the Library, the 4th of July and Memorial Day parades, the Farmers Market, and the Historical Society. The Arlingtones are very involved in the veterans community, village events and ceremonies, senior centers, parks, libraries, and schools, with 30+ local performances each year.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN ARLINGTON HEIGHTS? First
attending and then participating in the 4th of July parade!

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Rick Petricca BY RESIDENT RICK PETRICCA
R IC K PE TRICCA is an Arlington Heights resident and a member of the Chicago Snowballs, a co-ed sportstainment baseball team.
How long have you been involved with baseball? Ever since I was old enough
to hold a bat, baseball has been my favorite sport. In high school, I also joined show choir, which gave me experience performing in front of crowds. My dream has always been to play professional baseball, so when I heard about the Chicago Snowballs, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. It felt like the perfect combination of everything I love. Seeing how much joy this style of “sportstainment” brings to families and kids is incredibly rewarding, and it’s an honor to be part of something that’s bigger than baseball.
What do you enjoy most about playing on the Snowballs? The fan interaction
is easily my favorite part. Seeing the
Rick’s favorite part of being on the Snowballs is the fan interaction.
Rick’s show choir background combined with his baseball talent makes him a natural fit for the Snowballs.
excitement on kids’ faces, creating memorable moments for families, and hopefully inspiring the next generation of baseball players makes every game special.
What is your proudest moment? My
proudest moment has been playing catch with my dad before our games. Baseball has always been something we’ve shared, and growing up we’d often talk about what it would be like for me to play professionally one day. Now we get to live that dream together because he joined the Snowballs as a coach shortly after I made the team. I owe so much to both of my parents—my dad for fostering my love of baseball and my mom for encouraging me to join show choir in high school, which gave me the confidence and 22

performance skills that have become such a big part of this experience.
How did you get involved with the Snowballs? A few friends sent me
the Snowballs’ tryout announcement because they thought I’d be a great fit. I made a creative video of myself throwing snowballs at my neighbor’s tree. Shortly afterward, the team owner reached out and told me her mom loved the video and said I “needed to be on the team.” I was invited to tryouts, earned a spot on the roster, and the rest is history!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
furniture and housewares within days and with free delivery. Last year, Resale provided about $68K worth of essentials.
What challenges has WINGS resale encountered along the way? We are continuously in need of volunteers. They perform
everything from sorting new donations to restocking shelves to working the registers. We love our volunteers!
In what ways have you seen WINGS resale positively impact the community? Donating is good for the planet and
for those who are on a fixed income or shopping on a budget. However, the most rewarding part is seeing survivors pick out furniture and housewares for their new life. It provides dignity and agency to someone who previously hasn’t had control of different aspects of their life.
Tell us about any upcoming projects or events you’re excited to pursue in the coming months. How can others get involved? Volunteer! Donate! Save the date for our end
of the month sale (October 24 & 25th) where our entire store is 50% off. Also, every day select items are 50% off. We are hosting a Sip ‘N Shop on October 8th at the WINGS Resale Store here in Arlington Heights.

WHAT’S COOKIN’ ARLINGTON HEIGHTS?
Alex’s Spicy Vegan Japchae BY RESIDENT ALEX KARIOTIS DUFFIN
T
his Spicy Vegan Japchae dish is adapted from a recipe created by @julieandamy_ on Instagram. It is an easy, healthy lunch or dinner dish. You can easily swap out whichever vegetables you prefer, as Alex did with her version. You can also use another type of Asian noodle such as a rice noodle instead of the specific ones called for in the recipe.
INGREDIENTS For the tofu: • 1/2 block extra firm tofu • 2 tbsp tamari • 1 tbsp rice vinegar • 1 tsp brown sugar • 1/4 tsp black pepper • 1/2 tbsp chili oil • 1/4 tsp toasted Szechuan pepppercorn, optional
For the noodles (and sneaky spinach): • 2 large handfuls baby spinach • 200g-250g sweet potato noodles (dangmyeon) • 3 tbsp low-sodium tamari • 1 tbsp brown sugar • 1 tbsp sesame oil • 1 tbsp rice vinegar • 1 small clove garlic, grated
For the vegetables & toppings: • 1/2 white onion, thinly sliced • 5-6 shiitake mushrooms, stems removed, thinly sliced • 4 scallion stalks, white and green separated and cut into strips • 1 carrot, julienned • 1 red bell pepper, cut into thin strips • 2 tbsp cilantro, roughly chopped • 1 tbsp sesame seeds 26
October 2026
INSTRUCTIONS Marinate the tofu: Press the tofu for 10-15 minutes, then cut into thin rectangles. Whisk together the tamari, rice vinegar, brown sugar, black pepper, and chili oil. Add the tofu pieces to the tamari mixture and let sit until the final step.
Cook spinach and noodles: Boil water and add a few handfuls of spinach. Cook for 1 minute until soft and bright green.
Scoop out, drain, and squeeze excess water. Reuse the spinach water (nutrients!) to cook the noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and rinse to stop the cooking.
Make the noodle sauce: While the noodles are cooking, in a large bowl, whisk the tamari, brown sugar, sesame oil, rice vinegar, and garlic. Pour the cooked noodles on top.
Sauté the veggies:
Cook the tofu:
In a wok or skillet, heat neutral oil on medium high. Add onion and mushrooms and cook for 2-3 minutes until mushrooms are soft.
Add more oil to pan if needed and cook tofu pieces for 3 minutes. Flip and cook another 2-3 minutes, deglazing with extra tamari (if they dry out). When nearly done, add scallion greens and optional Szechuan.
Remove from the pan. Add scallion whites, carrot, and bell pepper and cook for 2 minutes, until just softened, then remove from heat.
Remove from heat.
Plate: To the bowl with the noodles, add the spinach, all the cooked veggies, and the tofu. Add cilantro and sesame seeds and mix until everything is coated. The tofu will break up and that’s okay! Serve with extra chili or sesame oil and lime wedges. Alex recommends using avocado oil as a neutral oil for the pan and you can swap in/out any vegetables you prefer.

Check Out Our Google Reviews “We recently had our second floor luxury vinyl installed by America’s Flooring Store after having our first floor done by them a couple of years ago, and once again, the experience was excellent from start to finish. Anna was incredibly helpful in guiding us to the perfect option to match our decor, and Santiago was prompt, professional, and easy to work with. Our installers, Jose and his dad, did a fantastic job—very skilled, clean, efficient, and attentive to every detail. We couldn’t be happier with the results. I highly recommend AFS to anyone looking to upgrade their flooring—you won’t be disappointed!”
