Godolphin had another banner year in 2022, capped by four victories in the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland. The most dramatic came in the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, in which Cody’s Wish – named after 16-year-old Cody Dorman, who was born with a rare genetic disorder that has forced him to undergo dozens of surgeries and rendered him nonverbal – rolled to victory. Other Breeders’ Cup winners owned by Godolphin included Rebel’s Romance in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf, Modern Games in the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Presented by PDJF and Mischief Magic in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Additional Godolphin Grade I winners in 2022 included Santin, Nations Pride, Matareya, Mysterious Night and Speaker’s Corner. Needless to say, but worth mentioning, Godolphin is a virtual lock to receive its third consecutive Eclipse Award for Outstanding Owner. As a 3-year-old in 2021, the Godolphin-owned Essential Quality won a pair of Grade I races: the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets and the Runhappy Travers Stakes. Godolphin is the Maktoum family’s private Thoroughbred horse racing stable. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, is the driving force behind Godolphin, which is named after the Godolphin Arabian, one of the three founding stallions of the modern Thoroughbred. The family’s breeding operation, Darley, is named in honor of another of the modern sport’s original stallions. The list of the outfit’s other top runners over the years includes Yibir, Space Blues, Maxfield, Daylami, Fantastic Light, Street Cry, Sulamani, Electrocutionist, Dubai Millennium, Discreet Cat, Vineyard Haven and Girolamo.
