ABOUT THE COVER BUILDING TOMORROW’S WORKFORCE: STARTS WITH FAMILY In a time where the workforce seems to be spread thin and employers are finding it hard to hire new employees, Farris Engineering, Inc. has been able to keep it in the family. For over 23 years, Kristy Cimino has worked for Farris as a project administrator. In that time, she has also raised a couple of children—one of whom currently works as an administrative assistant for Farris. Rachel Cimino started working at Farris a couple years ago to help her mother with various projects throughout the office. “Rachel has known the company and some of the employees since she was a baby. The small work environment brings a sense of closeness and a supportive family atmosphere,” Kristy said. Not only is Rachel helping her mom, but she is also gaining valuable experience in the areas of multitasking, time management, critical thinking, working with a variety of individuals, and technical experience with exposure to the engineering and construction fields. This experience can be used as she builds her career currently at Farris and in the future. As the company continues to grow, Marc Behrens, Information Systems & Technologies Manager, also found the need to hire someone to help. “I had a number of new equipment changes, servers and phone system that needed updated,” said Marc. “It was a great opportunity for my son Korbyn to get the experience of working for a company in his field of study.”
“I thought he might get lost in the shuffle of a big box company. Zane will start school in the spring at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in the engineering department. With an Associate in Applied Science degree in cyber security, Korbyn is also helping with content and compliance so Farris can obtain a Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification for government work. “Although I’ve only worked here for a couple months, I’ve developed some great working relationships with my co-workers,” said Korbyn. “I’m glad to not only get experience in my field of study, but also more about how Farris runs on a daily basis.” Dave and Zane Benscoter also are a father-son duo who work for Farris. Dave is currently the company’s building information modeling manager and senior designer while his son, Zane, works as an electrical design intern. “I originally wanted to be an architect but didn’t enjoy the classes. Over the years I have learned basic design material from my dad and it peaked my interest,” said Zane. He enjoys expanding his knowledge in engineering and learning new information.

Attendees had the opportunity to listen to Bakehouse’s business story, take a look at her 1880s Victorian home located on her farm in southwest Iowa, and enjoy local brews from Keg Creek Brewery and specialty snacks from Sugar Makery. Bakehouse discussed how to enroll in her signature communication coaching programs and engaging, team-building workshops in order to enhance one’s authentic speaker style. Tina B LLC was founded by Tina Bakehouse to help others share their stories with confidence and communicate more effectively, both in business and interpersonally. Ovation Heartwood Preserve Puts on ThreePart Caregiver Series Ovation Hear twood Preserve recently wrapped up a three-part lecture series hosted at the Jewish Community Center covering the many facets of care giving with expert Kari Berit, an author and national speaker dedicated to educating caregivers. In this series, Kari shared tips for dealing with family dynamics, framing emotional conversations, and exploring living options while caring for someone. Nearly 15 million Americans provide what is termed as “unpaid care giving”. The goal of the series was to help educate those who are currently or will be giving care to a loved one on their own. Kari was joined by a panel of experts for the first event on July 31, titled "Don’t Put Me in the Home". The panel for this event included David Thompson, an attorney with the law firm Burnett Wilson Law; Diane Hendricks, LCSW, Nebraska Medicine Division of Geriatrics & Gerontology and the Alzheimer’s Association; Carol Wait, RN, Ovation’s executive director for Memory Care; and Roxann Rogers Meyer, a member of the Ovation community relations team. The second event took place on August 25 and was titled, "‘Til Death Do Us Part – Choosing the Best Care for Your Spouse". Guests heard from caregivers, the Alzheimer’s Association, referral agencies, and Infinity Rehab. Kari was featured in a video for this event. The biggest takeaway that Ovation wanted to express is the fact that every situation is unique and family members must find the best choice for care based on their needs. For the third and last event on September 22, titled "Care for the Caregiver", guests heard about how to take care of themselves and maintain their well-being as a priority while balancing care for someone else. Brickway Brewery Wins Three Medals at American Distilling Institute Conference Brickway Brewery & Distillery, located in the historic Old Market District, recently won three medals for their famous distilled whisky at the 2021 American Distilling Institute conference August 23–26 in Louisville, KY. Owner and Head Distiller Zac Triemert and Head Brewer Mitchell Elmblad were in attendance to accept the awards. Brickway’s Double Barrel Bourbon took the gold, while their Rye Whisky and Sherry Cask Single Malt Whisky both won silver medals. These were exciting wins for Brickway at the biggest North American distilling competition. Brickway’s Single Malt Whisky has now won three international gold medals, a silver, and a bronze. “I remember being here in 2004 with Bill [Owens, American Distilling Institute founder] and only 24 other attendees sitting around a table to figure out what to do next. There were barely over 100 distilleries then, and now there are over 2,000!” stated Brickway on their Facebook page. They currently produce more than 30 beers and 10 different spirits every year. Brickway Brewery & Distillery opened in December 2013 and began by brewing just a few staple beers—a Brickway Pilsner, Omaha Stylee Juicy IPA, Jalapeno Pineapple Pilsner, and Coffee Vanilla Stout. Being natural born whisky lovers, their focus quickly expanded to distilling their own, signature whiskies that take at least three to four years to mature, depending on the whiskey. Cox Small Business Snapshot Sees Bright Future for Minority-Owned Small Businesses According to the Cox Small Business Snapshot, 90% of minority small business owners are hopeful about the growth of their business in the next year. Just over 60% have returned to or exceeded their pre-pandemic financial levels. Hardships were brought on by COVID-19. More than 75% of respondents claimed the pandemic heightened their business challenges. Roughly half applied for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, of which about two-thirds received full funding. Of the 72% of respondents who obtained personal stimulus money, most (81%) invested the funding back into their business, with technology being the biggest investment. Beyond the pandemic, minority-owned business owners often face unique challenges launching and growing their businesses. Top challenges faced among respondents included growing a customer base, accessing funding/capital, and planning and structuring their business. Over two-thirds (65%) say these issues are unique to minority-owned businesses. However, larger enterprises can help. 55% of business owners surveyed would like to see improved supplier diversity, as well as increased minority-specific grants and funding opportunities from bigger enterprises. Just under half (45%) want to have more mentorship or advisory programs with business executives. Greater Omaha Chamber Expands Successful REACH Program with Bilingual Support The Greater Omaha Chamber’s bilingual extension of its construction-focused, capacitybuilding REACH program for small and emerging businesses is now serving the Omaha community. This expansion builds on the seven years of success the REACH program has had empowering entrepreneurs to scale their businesses. “We know this will open up new opportunities for more business owners. By removing language barriers to our program, more entrepreneurs can learn the skills they need to be successful,” said Winsley Durand, executive director of the REACH program. “We’re here to provide assistance that helps small contractors grow and share in Omaha’s continuing economic prosperity.” In 2020, the REACH program served more than 200 businesses with more than 2,800 hours of technical assistance and consulting. The result of that time was $7.45 million dollars in direct contracts for REACH participants. The bulk of that assistance was focused on minority business owners, with 51% of the assistance provided to Black entrepreneurs, and 29% to Latino-owned businesses. MOMentum’s first hiring event for moms was a success! The event, held on August 24, was an opportunity for moms to connect with other moms, some amazing employers, and MOMentum staff and volunteers. There were seven employers who participated, along with two presenters who spoke of community resources. 16 job seekers and four community organizers/case managers attended. 25% of the moms who attended had interviews or followup calls scheduled with employers by the time they had left the event. National Bullying Prevention Month takes place each October, offering a special time to focus and raise awareness on bullying and prevention. Metro Omaha Builders Association to Host Fall Parade of Homes in October
The Omaha Empowerment Breakfast, which meets on the first Friday of every month at 7 a.m. at Beacon Hills in Aksarben Village, recently announced the main speaker for their November meeting and their focus to honor veterans in light of Veteran’s Day, which is on November 11. Bill and Evonne Williams will be the main speakers at November’s meeting, having four sons who have served in the military and a passion for honoring all those who serve. Of their sons, two are in the Army and two are Marines. The oldest is still active duty, serving as a JAG at Fort Riley after three tours to Iraq. The second son, a Marine, deployed to Afghanistan in 2013. The Williams’ are co-founders of Patriotic Productions, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to honor military service members, both past and present. They have also organized Honor Flights in Nebraska and Remember our Fallen, a traveling photo memorial to honor our nation’s fallen soldiers since September 11, 2001. At the meeting, the Williams’ will give an update on their nonprofit, covering highlights of Honor Flights, Remembering our Fallen, their Patriotic Parade and Concert, and the homecoming for Cpl Page. Omaha-Based PetFriendly Raises $6M in Seed Funding to Accelerate Growth PetFriendly, a subscription pet care company delivering vet-quality flea and tick protection to customers’ doorsteps, announced that it has closed $6 million in seed funding. The funding is the first external investment in the company. Tell us a little about your business. - We work with businesses and individuals to take care of their income tax, business, and financial services needs. We communicate with our clients to create a personalized plan to meet their specific situations. Cruise & Associates has seven offices throughout Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Norfolk, Columbus, Wayne, and Albion. How did you get started in the business? - I graduated from college in 1991 and could not find a job. At the time, Nebraska was still recovering from the farm crisis in the 80s and accounting firms were not hiring. I was working in a restaurant and the owner told me his brother was looking for someone to do bookkeeping. To help me get started, the owner’s brother gave me a 100-square-foot office rent-free and paid me $100 a month to do his bookkeeping. I sent out mailers and built my client base one at a time. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Being told by several people that I would not succeed in life. I was told I would not be able to graduate from a four year college. I had a banker, when I was first applying for a loan to purchase a computer, tell me to just go find a job working for another accounting firm, and once I had the client base built up to leave and steal the clients. Another challenge was starting a business with nothing but a desire. In the beginning, I was working two other jobs in the evenings and weekends just to survive. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Receiving my Enrolled Agent (EA) certificate. An EA is one of three professional designations allowed to represent people at all levels 11:11 PM with the IRS. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Buying an office in another location. If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Flying. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I love to cook. Who inspires you? - John French because he helped me get my start in business and gave me some very practical advice about running a company. In addition, President/Owner of Triple Check David Lieberman because he helped give me the training/information I need to run my own business. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein. I’ve tried to incorporate this into my business by always looking for new and different ways to help our clients reach their goals. Though Key Home Care is not a hospice agency, our caregivers supplement and support seniors through this journey. Our caregivers can be the primary caregiver for a hospice recipient or come in periodically to allow the primary caregiver a break. Many of our caregivers are certified and all undergo background verification for your safety. We also have compassionate and attentive bedside sitters for companionship and reassurance, whether sitting at the bedside in the hospital setting or helping your family member adjust to the new setting of a nursing home or assisted living. Key Home Care can provide 24-hour care, as well, when an elder needs 24-hour supervision or “hands-on” care. How did you get started in the business? - I became a CNA while living in Rhode Island and then advanced my career to a medication administrator in Wisconsin. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I would love to be a writer! I love to read all sorts of books and actually went to school to be a journalist. When I was 17 years old, I performed CPR on a man and saved his life. I became a spokesperson for the AHA and helped market their Be The Beat campaign. This campaign reached kids learning CPR, which I believe is super important—adults are not always around! How did you get started in the business? - A fluke, really. I started in more of a retail position in the commercial furniture industry, moving into business-to-business sales shortly after starting. How did you get started in the business? - I came upon Resolutions & Beyond, which is owned by the same owners of Universal Group, Jessica and Dan Headlee. They gave me the opportunity to intern with both companies this summer, and they were extremely generous by offering me a full-time position to continue to work for them. Resolutions & Beyond offers health coaching and wellness education for businesses in Omaha. There are a variety of support services, including weight management, fitness coaching, lifestyle changes, menu planning support, nutrition education, and general wellness in group, individual, and corporate settings. Tell us a little about your family. - My parents are both teachers in the Millard District where my mom teaches kindergarten and my dad teaches seventh grade and is also the athletic director. I have twin brothers who have just started their freshman year at Iowa Western Community College. They are going into diesel mechanics. We love spending time together, playing games, and having badminton tournaments with our cousins. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Graduating college and getting offered a full-time job has been a huge blessing I recently experienced. I am so thankful and excited for this next chapter of my life. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love to sleep in and watch Friends or whatever movie or shows are current. I also enjoy organizing and rearranging things along with doing self-care rituals such as face masks. It is always good to schedule coffee dates or hangouts with my close friends and family as well. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I learned how to juggle in college. It was part of our final and we practiced every class to master the skill. I also took a golf class in college where I actually learned skills and techniques on how to golf. My golf class was my favorite class I took in college. Who inspires you? - My best friend Emma inspires me all the time to be adventurous, enjoy the little things, and to be the best version of myself. Meet Devyn Sanderson, writer at Strictly Business. Tell us a little about your business. Strictly Business is a monthly magazine that is devoted to promoting and representing local businesses. We are a great way for local businesses to connect with readers and other organizations all over the Omaha and Lincoln markets. How did you get started in the business? - I have always loved writing and found English classes and anything writing-related to be so much fun, so I knew I wanted to be in a field where I could write in some capacity. I majored in English at UNL to further develop my writing skills, and that’s where I learned that I wanted to be involved with a publication. Not long after graduating in May 2021, I took up a job as a writer with the Strictly Business team! What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - I haven’t been in this industry for long, so I would say getting past all of the doubts that were vocalized towards me about getting an English degree and wanting to be a writer. With that being said, I am thankful for the family and friends that did support me along the way and helped me get to where I am now. Tell us a little about your family. - My family is from Harrison, NE. My parents are Nick and Sarah, and I have two younger siblings. My brother Michael is a senior in high school and my sister Zoey is in the sixth grade. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Hang out with my dog, Riggs, or go have some drinks somewhere local with friends. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - As a senior in high school, I was the president of my local FFA chapter. If you didn’t know me back then, that would probably surprise you. I don’t have much of an ag background, but I do have a very strong passion for the agriculture industry. Who inspires you? - My Nana, Lori, is my role model. She is so selfless and compassionate, and I would be blessed to be even half the woman that she is. Tanner, my boyfriend, is also a big inspiration. He is an incredibly hard worker but still knows how to have fun! He pushes me to excel in my talents and career, and for that I am so grateful. Child Saving Institute Announces New President and CEO, Chief Development Officer Child Saving Institute (CSI) has announced Jaymes Sime as its next president and CEO. Sime will replace retiring president/CEO, Peg Harriot, who has served Child Saving Institute for over 13 years. He will assume his new role on October 4. Sime has served as the executive director of the MICAH House in Council Bluffs for nearly six years. During his time as the organization’s leader, Sime has doubled its staff, grown its annual operating budget over 200%, completed a $3.7 million Jaymes Sime capital campaign, and successfully launched several other key growth strategies. In addition, Sime spent three years serving children and families as the community outreach coordinator and in-home family services consultant at Boys Town. Sime holds a master’s degree in public administration from South University and was awarded the Omaha Jaycees Ten Outstanding Young Omahans in 2017. CSI has also recently welcomed its new Chief Development Officer, Lori Bechtold. Bechtold Lori Bechtold is an experienced fundraiser, most recently serving as the chief development officer at the Omaha Home for Boys for the last six years. Robert G. Lueder of Lueder Construction Inducted into Omaha Business Hall of Fame Former president of Lueder Construction, Robert G. Lueder (1922-2013), was inducted into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame this year. Every year, the Greater Omaha Chamber recognizes and honors those whose vision, work ethic, and dedication to community have made a greater Omaha. Robert G. Lueder was president of Lueder Construction Company for more than three decades. Born and raised in the Omaha area, Lueder was a graduate of Benson High School and began studying architectural engineering at Iowa State University before having to serve in World War II. After the war, Lueder finished his studies and joined Lueder Construction in 1940, one year after his father obtained full ownership of the firm. Lueder was always known for his meticulous work and became company president in 1961 before retiring in 1994. Lueder had three children with his wife Mary and was very active in the community; including service with Nebraska Methodist Hospital, the Greater Omaha Chamber, University of Nebraska Medical Center, and the Omaha Community Playhouse. “Bob was a man of great integrity. An inspiring new partnership has been formed between Life Cure Foundation and The Hope Center for Kids. Together they are providing yoga therapy to the seniors of the Schennzel Community Center. Life Cure Foundation has a mission to love, inspire, and empower at risk youth and adults who deal with poor economic conditions. Their focus is centered around wellness practices to help people rehabilitate back into good health. The seniors at the Schenzel Community Center gather weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to socialize, workout, attend classes, and eat a meal together. During the program, seniors practice a variation of chair yoga and postures on the mat. The goal of the program is for seniors to walk away with exercises they can use on a daily basis for pain management and wellness. Partnering with Life Cure Foundation is giving seniors access to yoga practices that are shown to enhance health, increase mobility, and strengthen posture. Angels Among Us, Scooters Coffee Partner to Provide Free Coffee at Hospital Angels Among Us and franchise owners of Scooters Coffee in Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, Kelli and Mark Dudley, are partnering to be sure no inpatient pediatric cancer family pays for their coffee by setting up a charge account. This program, called Caleb’s Coffee, will allow any in-patient cancer family, with a proper hospital badge and special Caleb’s Coffee travel mug, to receive free hot-brewed coffee as often as they please. Angels Among Us will cover all costs on behalf of the family as a small way to provide comfort during their family’s journey. Caleb’s Coffee was started in memory of Caleb Friesen, a fun-loving, five-year-old boy who was diagnosed with cancer in2017. He and his family spent many days at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, and one of the activities he loved the most was going with mom and dad down to the coffee shop to get coffee. This year’s film streaming features Return to Rainy Mountain and Words From a Bear. Both films tell the compelling story of N. Scott Momaday, Kiowa essayist, novelist, writer, and 1969 Pulitzer Prize winner. These two films weave together the intricacies of Kiowa art, family, personal memoir, poetic justice, and democracy through Native sovereignty. The Salvation Army Western Division held a groundbreaking celebration on September 1 at the Western Plains Camp in South Sioux City. The 112acre property was purchased in 2020 after the Western Division’s iconic Gene Eppley Camp was destroyed by catastrophic flooding. The camp hosts hundreds of children and teens each summer from Omaha, greater Nebraska, and western Iowa.
Stephen Center and Saving Grace Offer Take-Home Hunger Experience
Phase one of updates to the camp will include upgrading nine sleeping cabins, as well as construction of a new 16-unit lodge to accommodate families and other guests, a nurse’s station, and a boathouse. Phase two calls for construction of a chapel and additional lodges.
This “take-home” event provides dinner – with a twist – and activities to learn about homelessness. Participants will receive a pre-ordered, gourmet, take-home meal for four, a low-cost sack supper, and educational materials to explore what it is like to be hungry and homeless. Back at home, individuals will heat the food and use the materials to discover whether their luck provides them with the gourmet dinner or the poverty meal.

Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital Breast Leadership Team and the Jennie Edmundson Foundation have teamed up again to provide the community with education and awareness in its fight against breast cancer. Each year during the month of October, the JE Foundation and the MJE Breast Health Center come together to raise awareness and funds through the sale of their Pink Out t-shirts. Nebraska Animal Loving Advocates (NALA) recently rescued a Cavalier King Charles puppy from euthanization. In June, the puppy was born to a breeder in Missouri, but with imperfections; she was born with hydrocephalus, or an excess of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Being an imperfect puppy, she could not be sold and was going to be euthanized if not passed onto a shelter or rescue. NALA arranged a special transport to bring the puppy to Omaha, and in September, they welcomed the tiny five pound puppy, who was then named Ava.

The MJE Breast Health Center specializes in breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment planning in a safe and warm environment. YES Receives $33K Gift from United Way of the Midlands Youth Emergency Services (YES) is excited to announce it has received a $33,000 gift from United Way of the Midlands to fund Youth Emergency Services’ Partnership for Youth Job Skill Development (job readiness) program. Nebraska Community Foundation Survey Indicates Promising Future for Rural Places Nebraska Community Foundation (NCF), in partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR) and local school districts, surveyed 1,047 middle and high school students between January and May of 2021. Participating communities included Albion, Bassett, Bruning, Burwell, Byron, Cedar Rapids, Chester, Davenport, Deshler, Grant, Hebron, O’Neill, Sidney, St. Edward, Stuart, Taylor, and surrounding areas. Students’ dream communities look a lot like where they live now. 64% said their ideal community is small, like their hometown—a significant increase from 47% in 2020. When asked whether a stigma accompanied staying in or returning to their community, 76% said no—up from 70% last year. Like last year, students placed considerable importance on safety, ranking it at the top of a list of important factors when imagining their ideal community. Fortunately, more than 90% of respondents said they feel safe in their hometowns, and other answers indicate they value others’ safety as well. Almost 80% said they were likely to act to stop unfair treatment of others, and 61% said they were likely to be an advocate for embracing diversity and inclusion in their communities. Omaha Rehab Facility, Northpoint Recovery Opens New Adult Inpatient Treatment Center Northpoint Recovery, which specializes in treating addiction and mental health challenges that contribute to substance use, opened a new 44-bed, adult inpatient treatment center in early September. The Northpoint Nebraska facility is the first of three care centers planned for Omaha. Later this year, Northpoint will open an adult outpatient treatment center, followed by a separate outpatient treatment facility designed to serve adolescents. Northpoint utilizes an integrated approach to treatment, and its evidencebased inpatient programs are designed to provide patients with needed care in a safe, comfortable environment. As part of the treatment, patients learn how to identify triggers, avoid relapses, reintegrate into the community, and engage with Northpoint’s unique alumni programming— all with the goal in mind of maintaining long-term sobriety. The staff, led by a board-certified psychiatrist and medical director, is trained to treat a variety of substances, from prescription drugs and opioids to alcohol, meth, and heroin. Red Cross in Need of Blood Donors for Patients with Sickle Cell Disease The American Red Cross has launched a new national initiative to reach more blood donors who are Black to help patients with sickle cell disease and improve health outcomes. Blood transfusions are essential in managing the very real pain and long-term health of those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same race or similar ethnicity and blood type are the most effective way to help patients experiencing a sickle cell crisis. Since the majority of people with sickle cell are of African descent, blood donations from Black individuals are critical in helping those suffering from this disease. The Red Cross currently provides sickle cell trait screening on all donations from self-identified African American donors. This additional screening helps the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help patients with sickle cell and provides African American donors who give with the Red Cross an additional health insight during a time when health information has never been more important. Donors can expect to receive results of their blood screenings within one to two weeks through their Red Cross Blood Donor App and the online donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. Gladys Har rison i s a Nebraska native and the mother of three adult children and one grandson who is the apple of her eye. Suzanne Wilke started out grooming in her aunt’s pet store as a teenager. That was 50 years ago! SCC Receives Investor of the Year Award from Falls City Group
Southeast Community College (SCC) was presented with the 2019 Investor of the Year award from the Falls City Economic Development and Growth Enterprise (EDGE) on January 8 at the EDGE Annual Banquet. SCC received the award for “supporting the economic development mission of EDGE and exhibiting a high degree of excellence and vision.” SCC President Dr. Paul Illich and members of the Board of Governors Kathy Boellstorff and Keith Hammons accepted the award, along with Falls City Learning Center Coordinator Holly Carr. Last September, SCC opened a new 9,500-square-foot learning center on the north edge of Falls City. The building includes four classrooms, a large manufacturing space, and a health sciences area. Credit and non-credit classes are offered, as well as business and industry training. SCC’s learning centers are part of the College’s strategic plan to better serve the educational needs of the communities within the College’s 15-county service area.
