Jennie Edmundson Foundation Hospital Adds State-of-the-Art Digital PET-CT System The nonprofi t Jennie Edmundson Foundation recently announced the addition of a state-of-theart PET/CT System that will benefi t patients at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital during their fi ghts against cancer. The hospital’s imaging provider, Wisconsinbased Shared Medical Services, exchanged the hospital’s analog positron emission tomography/computer tomography (PET/CT) machine with a new, digital one. The diagnostic tool came at no out-of-pocket cost because it was classifi ed as an upgrade under the agreement with the medical supplier. Jennie Edmundson purchased the older machine in 2014, but given technology advancements, the upgrade will provide a major benefi t to those being treated at the hospital, according to Jennie Edmundson Imaging Manager Sheri Holub. The new equipment cuts patients’ scan time in half—to less than 15 minutes—in addition to providing increased sensitivity that means the scan can detect smaller lesions faster. It also requires smaller injections of radioactive material, thus reducing overall radiation exposure, and the scanner is a bit smaller and less intimidating so it’s not as conducive to claustrophobia. American Red Cross Seeks Volunteers for Shelter and Blood Donor Screening in Crisis The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to fill key roles in the community, especially to support shelter efforts and to serve as blood-donor and facility screening. The coronavirus pandemic has made it challenging to deploy trained disaster volunteers from other parts of the country, should an emergency occur, so the Red Cross needs area residents to step up for these needs. There is a particular need for volunteers to support sheltering services, as the Red Cross is placing those people needing a safe place to stay into emergency hotel lodging, when possible. If hotel stays aren’t possible, the nonprofi t will open traditional shelters. To help keep people safe, they have put additional precautions in place and developed special training for their workforce. Volunteers are needed to staff shelter reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information collection, and other vital services for those they serve. The Red Cross also has an urgent need for volunteers to serve as screeners for blood donors and facilities. Nebraska Safety Council Partnering to Offer COVID Preparedness Certifi cation Program The Nebraska Safety Council is partnering with the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce to offer a COVID Preparedness training and certifi cation program to recognize organizations that are actively putting appropriate safety protocols in place. The training is required to get certifi ed, and businesses that meet certifi cation requirements will send a clear message to employees, clients, and the public that they are doing everything possible to keep people safe.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused businesses to change their operations to fi t the safety needs of the associated threat, and OSHA is holding the Nebraska Safety Council accountable for its responsibilities in preparing businesses to meet those needs and recognize those businesses that are already doing a fantastic job. The four-hour course will include training about preparation and emergency-operations planning for a pandemic; job safety and hazard analyses; policy, procedure, and continuing improvement; blood-borne and airborne pathogens; PPE selection and training; respiratory protection; decontamination; reporting procedures for OSHA, CDC, EPA, and local health department; and awardcertifi cation application requirements.
