BBB Tip: Hunting for a COVID-19 Vaccine? Be Careful Sharing Personal Information
If you’re looking for assistance scheduling an appointment to get a COVID-19 vaccine, the Better Business Bureau warns against sharing personal information with “vaccine hunter” websites, online forums, and social media groups that have sprung up offering to help people fi nd open appointments and leftover vaccine doses. While most of these website and online groups are legitimate resources, this situation is an ideal opportunity for scammers to push phony vaccines and other cons. The BBB warns to use caution when following links or providing personal information.
Centralized vaccine availability websites, similar to airfare aggregation sites, scan the databases of vaccine providers, such as CVS or Rite Aid for availability. VaccineFinders.org is one such site and is promoted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These websites can be handy tools, but be wary of lookalike sites that collect personal information or require payment. The best way to avoid cons when looking for a vaccine appointment is to go through offi cial public health channels—such as the public health department or a pharmacy—and approved providers. Anyone claiming to sell vaccine doses is a scammer, and don’t pay to add your name to a waiting list.
The Better Business Bureau has been serving local communities since 1936. The overall mission of the organization is to be a leader in advancing marketplace trust. For more information, visit bbb.org/ Nebraska or call (800) 649-6814.

Join HopeSpoke in Crucial Conversation for Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week
In honor of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week May 2-8 and Mental Health Awareness Month throughout May, HopeSpoke is asking the community to join in crucial conversation about mental health. The fact is, one in fi ve of us is affected by mental health or substance use issues, and young people are not immune. Children and teens cope better when they know that mental health challenges are not uncommon—and that it is important to reach out for help. If a young person in your life needs to talk about their problems, HopeSpoke can help. Last year, nearly 1,800 children, youths and families gained insight and skills through the nonprofi t’s comprehensive behavioral and mental health services.
“We look to others, especially those who we admire, to learn how to cope when we are struggling,” said HopeSpoke Executive Director Katie McLeese Stephenson, MSW. “Be the adult that lets them know that what they are experiencing is normal, and that there is help available. Your response can make all the difference at a crucial time.”

Take “Nick,” for example. He is a young person who has learned to improve his mental health by talking about it. Nick was fi ghting with classmates and teachers and running away or hurting himself when feeling upset. At HopeSpoke, Nick learned healthier ways to manage anxiety, such as journaling to express his feelings. He and his mother also have learned healthy communication and calming skills via interactive therapy. Today, Nick is living a healthier, more joyful life—the kind every child should have.
For more information about HopeSpoke, or to support mental health for Nebraska youth, visit www.hopespoke.org or call (402) 475-7666. Join the conversation and be a champion for your child’s mental health!

Clearwater Counseling Advocates for Mental Health Awareness Month Throughout May
Throughout the month of May, Clearwater Counseling, PC is advocating for Mental Health Awareness Month, an observance intended to bring mental health to the forefront. One in fi ve American adults experience a mental health issue, and one in 25 Americans have lived with a serious mental health illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression. The Clearwater Counseling team understands that mental health is just as important as physical health, and while many factors can attribute to mental health problems—including biological factors, life experiences and even family history—recovery is possible. Treatment varies for mental health problems and a strong support system is critical for those dealing with mental health struggles.
Clearwater Counseling works with clients who are struggling with a variety of mental health diagnoses including depression, relationship issues, stress, grief/loss/trauma, addiction and recovery, co-dependency, anxiety and phobias, parenting problems, sexual abuse and incest, physical abuse, and violence, and more. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please don't be afraid to reach out to others and talk about it. Only together can we raise awareness and end the stigma surrounding mental health.

Clearwater Counseling, PC is a private practice offering mental health services to children, adolescents and adults in the Grand Island and Omaha areas. They work to treat mental health diagnoses through personalized and compassionate counseling practices that promote growth, development, and well-being to further enhance quality of life. The Bridge Behavioral Health Shares Success Story from Program Client
Maybe nothing tells an organization’s story better than the testimonials of clients, so The Bridge Behavioral Health is letting them do just that. They are teaching the community about what they do by sharing fi rst-person stories that tell their story for them. Today we hear from Ben. “I had struggled with my alcoholism for 20+ years,” Ben said. “I went through multiple bouts of sobriety and numerous outpatient treatment programs, but nothing seemed to work for me long term. In 2014, I fi nally was brought to a place I consider my bottom. With no options left, and nowhere to turn, I accepted help from The Bridge and was accepted into their inpatient treatment program. I am not being hyperbolic when I say that The Bridge saved my life.“ “With the skills I learned in treatment, and the opportunity to accept responsibility for my actions up to that point in a safe setting, I was able to start building a strong foundation in sobriety. With a few one-days-at-a-time, I was then able to rebuild my life. Today, as I type these words, I am coming up on seven years of continuous sobriety. I get to strive for the dreams that the wife and I thought impossible just those few short years ago. The gratitude I have for The Bridge is endless. They really made all of this possible, and I embrace any opportunity I have to give back what was so freely given to me. Words can never do justice to what The Bridge has done for me. With that said, I will simply say: Thank you!” The Bridge Behavioral Health has served as an essential part of the Lincoln community’s safety net since 1984, connecting people suffering from addiction and related mental-health issues with support and treatment.
