Omaha Unveils New Dewey Dog Park in Midtown Area

C41 Photography, owned and run by Maggie Mellema, recently celebrated the opening of a new studio space in West Omaha at 11224 Elm St. The relocation was mar ked with a ribboncutting ceremony conducted by the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce on December 3. The new studio has already been put to good use with a Santa photography experience during the holidays. Maggie decked out the space with festive, richly-toned props, twinkling Christmas lights, and a decorated tree.

The City of Omaha Parks & Recreation was thrilled to open their newest dog park located at Dewey Park (550 Turner Blvd.). Mayor Jean Stothert and Parks Director Brook Bench hosted a ribbon cutting on December 9, with hot cocoa and cookies for the humans and biscuits for the pups. The first 75 dogs to enter the park received a special thank you treat. The $400,000 park features an agility course, running water, and a summer splash pad. There are separate areas for small and large dogs that are fenced off for safety purposes along with a double-locking system to get in and out of the park. The turf is a self-cleaning synthetic grass that will hopefully make it easy for the city to maintain and keep the park clean and sanitary year round. Taking up about a third of an acre, the dog park has plenty of room for dogs to run and play. The City of Omaha Parks & Recreation built the park near midtown to appeal to the growing number of young professionals moving to apartments in the area. Live2Lead 2020 Growth Summit Set for February 27, Facilitated by Lead Your Legacy

On December 10, it was announced at the FutureCon Tech Conference in Las Vegas that Keller Williams is preparing to open KW Elite, a new Market Center in West Omaha. Jeff Cohn, a native of Omaha and founder of Omaha’s Elite Real Estate Group, will lead the new venture with his team of 35 agents. The 10,000-square-foot campus was built to be modern and consumer friendly. KW Elite is located in the Advent Building at 17838 Burke St. The high-tech office will be a one-stop destination to aid buyers and sellers in numerous areas of the buying and selling process, such as acquiring a mortgage, title, insurance services, and more. New technology features are planned to be included as well, such as virtual reality rooms for touring homes, a state-of-theart training facility, and artificial intelligence. The new building is anticipated to create nearly 250 jobs for the Omaha area. Austin, Texas-based Keller Williams, the world’s largest real estate technology franchise by agent count, has more than 1,000 offices and 180,000 associates. The franchise is also #1 in units and sales volume in the United States. In 2019, Fast Company named Keller Williams the #1 “Most Innovative Company” in real estate. Tell us a little about your business. - We help patients that suffer with leg pain, swelling, and restlessness caused by venous insufficiency. I perform the diagnostic studies with ultrasound, looking at the health of veins. How did you get started in the business? - I’ve been doing cardiovascular ultrasound for over 20 years, and that has taken many forms. I have focused on veins specifically for the last eight years because what we do can make such a big difference for people. It’s very rewarding to get to know our patients and help them feel so much better. Tell us a little about your family. - I have a wonderful husband and three bright sons. I have one daughter-in-law, and I am a grandmother of a feisty little girl. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - We have an acreage with a small farm. I enjoy spending my time off working with the animals and finding new projects to complete. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I am a beekeeper. Who inspires you? - My parents. My mother has inspired me to be an independent woman, and my father has given me a strong work ethic. We have in-house engineering and architecture for our product nationwide, with a construction center located in Waverly, NE. I specifically focus on the design-build commercial business in the Omaha metro area. How did you get started in the business? - Ten years ago, I wanted to get back into the construction business and began looking for a new career. I had little knowledge of the post-frame business and all the product capabilities. I was fortunate enough to get hired in an office with two veteran salesman that spent many hours mentoring me. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? Many people do not know all that we can do with our product and business. There is a misconception of the product based on what it may have been 30+ years ago. More knowledge would allow many more opportunities. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Making sure that I leave every client I can as a raving fan of the product and process. Without a satisfied customer, we have nothing. I’ve had the chance to partner up with some amazing people, and it’s been rewarding to have the opportunity to serve each one of them to the best of my ability. Tell us a little about your family. - I’ve been married to my wife Elizabeth for over 16 years. We have three very different yet very amazing children. Our oldest daughter Reese is almost 12 and in her first year of middle school. She likes to swim, is very studious, and enjoys the arts. Our middle child Kael is in fourth grade and, like most boys, is infatuated with football, basketball, and baseball. He keeps us busy six days a week with select baseball and basketball. He’s the quiet peacekeeper in our house. Our youngest Mazie is in kindergarten and is six. She’s the fireball and tries to be the boss in our house. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Moving here from Minnesota three years ago with little knowledge of the Omaha area. I moved to take on a new challenge with the company. We live in the Gretna school district and have been very happy with the transition.

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER Meet Bianca Harley, director of community diversity and inclusion at the Greater Omaha Chamber. Tell us a little about your business. - CODE is the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity, and Equity. CODE was born as a sustainable initiative to address equal access to opportunity in Greater Omaha. Research conducted in 2015 showed African American young professionals were 5–6 times less likely than their Caucasian peers to recommend Greater Omaha as a place to live, work, and play, among other issues. Two years of focus groups, additional research, and collaboration among organizations, nonprofits and corporations further revealed research data were not only perceptual but also behavioral. Something had to be done because “nothing” is never an option. How did you get started in the business? - When the Chamber conducted the African American YP survey, I participated. Having spent most of my life in Greater Omaha, the results didn’t necessarily come as a surprise. I spent six years as the Director of Career Development for the College of Business at UNO before I began my work at the Chamber. In that role I had the unique opportunity to visit a variety of workplaces where I often identified immediately a lack of diversity and felt a strong urge to do something about it. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Within the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion, there is so much work to be done. Sometimes, I feel like we are barely scratching the surface. To overcome this challenge, I celebrate every milestone, every win, no matter how small. It all adds up. Will we ever resolve systemic oppression and racism? Address gender equality? Have inclusion of our LGBTQIA2S+ community? Embrace people with different abilities, age, socioeconomic status, and more? Yes, we will. Tell us a little about your family. - I am the daughter of two equally brilliant, passionate, and loving people—the second oldest of their seven children! We are an incredibly close, long distance family. I am also blessed to be a mother to three children who I would consider my greatest contribution to this world: Sonny “Q,” Stevie, and Soleil. (You’ll want to remember those names- they’re going to do big things!). I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the host of friends who have become family as well. I’m eternally grateful for everyone in my life. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - You’ll find me in a gym watching my favorite players. I’m an avid little league/high school sports follower and the number one fan of a few amazing kids! Who inspires you? - My daughter, Soleil, is a constant source of inspiration. At just six months old, she was diagnosed partially blind in her right eye. As a mother, my mind immediately began thinking of how this would impact her quality of life, but she hasn’t missed a single beat. Watching her learn and grow has been a privilege. Tell us a little about your business. - Modern Work is a business community of over 85 studios/suites that have a very “KüL” vibe. It is the brain child of my boss, Curt Brannon. Our tenants enjoy a fully-furnished, private office where they get to choose the color and style of their fixtures and finishes. The KüL Factory is the third leg of our operation, and we will be opening a showroom in 2020 that will help us partner with architects, designers, and contractors to bring our fixtures to the commercial public. “KüL” is the way we think, the way we design, and the vibe we like to have in all we do. How did you get started in the business? - I answered a very interesting ad on Indeed. It had very specific questions like, “Are you the OCD type? Do you like juggling lots of stuff at once? What is your personal mission statement?” After meeting with Curt, we realized we were on the same wavelength and that we would work well together.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Being a working mother of four. My kids are all grown now and out of the house, and I look back and wonder how everything got done when they were younger. Having a career and four young children at home is quite the juggling act, but I’m happy they were able to see me succeed in doing both. Tell us a little about your family. - I am from Hastings originally. I came to Omaha for college and never left. I have two boys and two girls. The two oldest are out of college and contributing to society as a VP of business development and a NICU nurse. I have two kids in college, as well—a son that is a soon-to-be high school AP History teacher and a daughter studying business. As they were growing up, we traveled all over the U.S. playing basketball, baseball, soccer, and volleyball. Staying busy kept us all out of trouble...or at least mostly out of trouble. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - My father passed away from cancer this past year. It was a very tough time for my family. He was one of the best people I have ever known. I saw a quote early on after his death that really put things into perspective for me and made me think about things much different in every aspect of my life: “Be the thing that you loved about the person that is gone.” WOW! That is powerful stuff. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I played tennis at Creighton University. After a 15-year hiatus to have kids, I took it up again and played competitively on teams that won regionally and nationally. Strictly Business recently brought on Julia Evertson as a creative intern to assist with design efforts. Originally from Sidney, NE, Julia currently attends the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She studies advertising and public relations with minors in English and fashion merchandising. For the past four summers, Julia has been a lifeguard and swim lesson instructor, so she was excited to come on board the Strictly Business team to gain valuable graphic design experience outside of the classroom. She works closely with Art Director Katherine Crawford to design advertisements for clients in Lincoln and Omaha, arrange layouts for client spotlights, and assist with a variety of other creative elements of the magazines.

The Omaha City Council approved Mayor Jean Stother t’s appointment recommendation of Mary Byrnes to a three-year term with the Omaha Municipal Land Bank Board of Directors for District 4. Mary Byrnes, vice president and mortgage loan officer of Lincoln Federal Savings Bank, has been appointed as a board member of the Omaha Municipal Land Bank’s District 4 upon the Mayor’s recommendation and will serve on the Finance Committee.

Omaha Home for Boys is excited to announce that it has added a Crisis Stabilization program to its continuum of care. HETRA Announces Current 2020 Schedule of Openings for All Participants Heartland Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy (HETRA) hosts special informational tours twice monthly for anyone interested in becoming a HETRA par ticipant. The tours are designed to give prospective participants a feel for the barn environment, the horses as equine partners, the type of interactive therapy they may receive, and what they can expect from a therapy session. NONPROFIT NEWS Felius Cat Café Launches New Cat Rescue In November, Felius Cat Café announced that they would take their organization to the next level by launching their own feline rescue: Felius Rescue. Previously, Felius only held a cat shelter license, focusing on providing a care-free environment for adoptable cats. Felius Rescue expands the organization’s reach and impact on the Omaha community, further establishing Felius’ place on the front lines of cat rescue efforts. “The timing was perfect to take a leap and to launch our very own rescue,” said Felius Founder and President Bre Phelan. “It’s the next logical step in fulfilling our mission. Now, we’ll be able to serve the Omaha metro with a more holistic model for feline care and advocacy.” The launch of Felius Rescue signals the third phase of the organization’s multi-pronged outreach efforts. Felius Cat Café opened in September 2018 to match adoptable cats with permanent homes, eclipsing 100 adoptions by its one-year anniversary. In September 2019, Felius launched a second phase, introducing its Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program to assist in efforts to humanely control the area’s feral cat population. Expanding into rescue, Phelan says, addresses a critical facet of care in the community and provides Felius Cat Café with opportunities to increase operational efficiency and, ultimately, boost adoptions. MENTOR Nebraska Announces 7th Annual City-Wide Recruitment Campaign MENTOR Nebraska is launching its 7th annual mentor recruitment campaign. The local campaign is aligned with a national campaign led by MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, a nonprofit that serves as an advocate and resource for mentoring organizations. The City of Omaha Mayor’s Office, Grant Administration Division, has awarded MENTOR Nebraska a $10,000 grant to be used for mentor recruitment events. In January 2019, MENTOR Nebraska rebranded from Midlands Mentoring Partnership. The name change is a reflection of the organization’s expanded reach, now serving mentoring programs across the state of Nebraska. Along with that transition, MENTOR Nebraska has placed a strategic focus on helping mentoring agencies reach the youth who are most in need of mentors. As part of the recruitment campaign, MENTOR Nebraska is conducting a Corporate Mentoring Challenge in partnership with the Greater Omaha Chamber and the Mayor’s office. The goal is to challenge Omaha businesses to create or expand an existing mentoring culture within their companies and to encourage employee participation in mentoring programs for youth in the community. Companies must participate in three mentoring activities in order to complete the challenge. Free Mental Health First Aid Training Provided by Region 6 Behavioral Healthcare

On February 27 at 5:30 p.m., Hillcrest Health Services will host Dimensions of Dementia, a free educational seminar open to the community about what a dementia diagnosis entails for families. The seminar will take place at the Hillcrest Country Estates Grand Lodge, located at 6021 Grand Lodge Ave. in Papillion. Dr. Anna Fisher, a nationallyrenowned dementia expert and director of education and quality for Hillcrest, will present the best practices for communication and nonpharmacological approaches to care for a loved one with dementia. She will also touch on how care must change once dementia is confirmed. Refreshments will be provided.

Region 6 Behavioral Healthcare has organized a free eight-hour course that will provide mental health first aid training to the community on February 29, starting at 8:30 a.m. The class will take place at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, located at 510 N 93rd St. Attendees should enter the church through the north door and go to room 101. NCBB Calls for Donors to Find a Match for Sickle Cell Fighters in the Community Nebraska Community Blood Bank is calling for donors to help them find a match for sickle cell fighters in the community. February is Black History Month, so there’s no better time to discuss a blood disorder that disproportionally affects the African American community. One in 365 African Americans are born with sickle cell disease, a life-long blood disorder that can cause extreme pain, strokes, and even organ damage in some cases. Often, regular blood transfusions are necessary to help relieve the pain associated with the disease.

They lived up to the hype during our dining experience. We ordered a variety of items to get the full experience. For the appetizer, we got Chicken Wings for the table to share. They definitely warmed up our taste buds for the main courses! La Casa features delicious bone-in wings made with housemade honey-lime Sriracha sauce on their menu, and they are currently launching a new flavor that has more of that original BBQ flavor you know and love. The wings came out with a creamy Romano sauce that was rich with fresh herbs and had an amazing consistency for dipping. What we liked about the salad at La Casa was all the handcrafted dressing options we had to choose from. Their House Italian and House Balsamic Vinaigrette were great, but it turns out the House Creamy Romano dressing tasted just as good on our salad as it did on the wings! Our favorite dish we tried was the lasagna – Original Meat. It’s made with Mafalda noodles so it gives the lasagna a unique look and texture. Each bite had a strong cheese flavor and there was a generous portion of meat. The close second favorite was the pizza. We were head over heels about the crust! It really is like a pie crust in the way that it has a flakey outer layer and its thin but still has a soft, doughy chew to it. (We actually had a few slices left over and when we reheated it the next day, we found out that the crust keeps really well. We thought that was kind of a cool thing to mention. So often, the crust will either get too chewy or too stiff when you microwave it, so we were impressed.) Plus, La Casa does rectangular pizzas which means even more crust for your buck! The pizza we ordered was the Pollo Carciofi Bianco. The toppings were so fresh, especially the garlic chicken and artichoke hearts. For the spicy lovers out there, we recommend ordering the Penne Shrimp Calabria. The aftertaste really takes you by surprise in a good way. It’s the Calabrian chili pesto that gives it that kick. The marinara sauce, scallions, mushrooms, and sun-dried tomatoes all balance the flavor out really well. The last meaty dish we dug our teeth into was the Pork Sugo from La Casa’s special features menu. This went beyond your classic Italian food with the braised pork and red wine sauce served over Campenelle pasta. We recommend this for anyone wanting to mix it up! We finally wrapped up our evening with a little dessert. We decided to get the Cassata cake to share. Just like your traditional Sicilian dessert, it was very sweet. It had a yummy creamy filling with almonds, cherries, and chocolate.
