We have been overwhelmed by the wonderful support from our community since we launched our appeal a year ago, asking for help to build a bigger hospice so we can care for more people. Thanks to generous donations, we have already redeveloped some of the cramped areas of the hospice building in Wildwood Drive, Worcester, and welcomed patients and their loved ones to our bright and modern day rooms. Building work on the first stage of the project is due to be completed by the spring, giving us more space to support people who are living longer with increasingly complex conditions. Now, with your help, we are looking forward to completing our Build 2020 vision by creating a living well centre at the heart of our hospice where we can support hundreds more people each week.

Please help us raise the final £776,000 of our £5.3m expansion and redevelopment project so we can care for up to an extra 1,000 people a year. Turn overleaf to see the progress so far and find out how you can donate.

For the first time, the centre which we’re calling The Bradbury Centre thanks to generous support from the Bradbury Foundation - will give us the space we need to offer a range of supportive treatments, therapies and social activities that will make a huge difference not only to patients, but their families too. The centre will include therapy rooms for exercise, art, music and horticulture as well as counselling and an occupational therapy

training kitchen. All these will open onto The Green, a light new space where patients, carers, staff and visitors can gather together to eat and drink, meet friends, to sit after a therapeutic session - or just to connect with others who have come to the hospice for support. We can’t wait to continue our transformation of St Richard’s this year so we can offer free, expert care and support for people to live life to the fullest, as independently as they can, for as long as they can. Care news

Moving messages about our care During Hospice Care Week, we asked our supporters to share what they love about St Richard’s on paper hearts at our shops across the county.

Animal magic at St Richard’s

These hearts were used to create beautiful window displays during the week, helping engage passersby and shoppers to learn about our care.

A host of loveable animals have visited the hospice recently, bringing smiles to the faces of our patients, families, staff and volunteers.

Some of the messages we received were so moving, including one which simply read: “Love, care and friendship are at the centre of all it does.” Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts with us.

Among the furry visitors were alpacas Dave, Shah and Brownlee - followed by a visit from therapy miniature ponies Moo Moo and Lily.

Fantastic support from Children in Need

Another visit saw Charlie, the 19-year-old therapy donkey come in to meet us - happily munching on carrots as he enjoyed being fussed over. Thank you to Temevale Alpacas, Rosebud Meadow and Mike's Donkeys.

We were thrilled to receive more than £46,000 from Children in Need to help us suppor t bereaved children over the next three years.

Couple tie the knot at hospice

With its funding, we will run activity days for teenagers who’ve experienced the death of a loved one and par t-fund our social worker who gives emotional, social and practical suppor t for children and families.

A couple together for 10 years celebrated their relationship by tying the knot on the hospice's In-patient Unit. Friends and hospice staff gathered to celebrate the marriage of Phil and Jan, while

bouquets of flowers were placed around the room for the ceremony. "It was a roller coaster - I never thought things could happen so quickly," said Jan. "It meant the world. The memories, I will take them forever - I will never forget it."

Magical Waterfalls Walk Saturday, 30th March Take on a 10-mile guided hike around eight beautiful waterfalls, and several smaller falls, in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Coach travel from St Richard's Hospice is included.

Cotswold Way Walk Saturday, 15th June Take on this challenging 20mile walk for our Build 2020 Appeal and enjoy amazing views and historic architecture. Registrations to open in February.

Messy Madness Saturday, 15th June Get messy with our 5k course of powdered paint, foam and gunge. Run or walk the route at Churchfields Farm near Droitwich. At the finish, collect a medal and enjoy an ice-cream. Sponsored by Majestic Bingo.

Join us for the return of this 22-mile circular, flat walk from Droitwich, along the towpath of the renovated Droitwich Canal to the magnificent river Severn and back along the Worcester Birmingham Canal. A 12-mile route is also available.

Join one of our group skydiving days at Hinton Airfield, Northamptonshire, and experience a free-fall from 10,000ft at speeds up to 120mph before being expertly steered to the ground in front of your friends and family.

Abseil 141ft down Abberley clock tower, while taking in beautiful views.

This is an all-day challenge, but not a race. Teams of eight to 10 people.

Your expert instructor will help guide you to the ground in front of all of your friends, family and spectators.

Volunteer news Recently, we recorded a Facebook Live Q&A session exploring the topic of volunteering in our shops.

Army cadet Jacob Brown, aged 14, has recently spent time volunteering at our St Swithin’s Street shop in Worcester as par t of his Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Jacob says: “Everyone was very friendly and welcoming in showing me around and what to do.”

A touch of celebrity at hospice shop

Last autumn, we hit the news when four smart Hugo Boss suits formerly worn by TV personality Chris Tarrant went on sale in our Déjà vu shop in Great Malvern.

These volunteers give their time to provide: “I especially enjoy working on the till and processing payments.”

Teenager shares thoughts on volunteering

Young people can learn useful life skills by volunteering in our hospice shops – from team work to till skills; it can be a great introduction to the workplace.

We have 24 Family Support Volunteers (FSV) and 52 Community Volunteers who help support family, friends and carers of patients who have been referred to the hospice.

“My role is working in the book shop, which is great for me as reading is one of my favourite hobbies. I sor t, organise, tidy and price the books, ensuring they are stored on the correct shelf, deal with customer sales and donations of books.”

The items were donated by a St Richard’s supporter with a close connection to Chris Tarrant – alongside the wardrobe continuity book picturing the broadcaster wearing the suits on It’s Not What You Know, in 2008 and the celebrity special of Who Wants to be a Millionaire in 2013. The suits attracted a flurry of excitement, with the story featuring in the local media – resulting in sales too!

Kirstie Smith, from our HR and Volunteers Team, joined Bev Eller ton, Manager at our Kidderminster shop, to discuss what shop volunteering involves and answer questions.

Telephone support to suit personal needs One-to-one support: FSVs offer one-to-one sessions with pre and post bereavement patients and carers Group support for adults: Our group work is supported by volunteers who help out with

STEPS – our bereavement group, Men’s Space and Carers’ Group. These are informal social groups for those who wish to meet others for a drink and a chat. Community Volunteers Service: A service for patients and their families staffed entirely by volunteers who provide practical and emotional support out in the community. They help with befriending, light gardening, shopping, pet care and light household duties. We are very grateful to the support of not only our FSVs and Community Volunteers – but to everyone who volunteers their time at St Richard’s.

Royal visitor at Bewdley store Staff at our shop in Bewdley were excited to meet a royal visitor recently. The Duke of Gloucester was in town to unveil a statue of Stanley Baldwin and while he was there, came to see the shop’s window display dedicated to the three times Prime Minister. The mayor introduced the Duke of Gloucester to the shop team and told him about the hospice. He stopped for a quick chat and he was very interested in the window display.

Kate Pinhal, shop manager, said: “It was exciting, he’s very nice and it was lovely he took the time to see us.”

Tewkesbury shop set to open

The new shop will be found at number 33 High Street, Tewkesbury – just two doors down from our existing premises.

Preparation work is underway to get the newest addition to our portfolio of hospice shops ready to open in the New Year.

The new shop is expected to open at the end of January and is twice the size of our current store in the town. It will sell a much wider range of clothing, bric-a-brac and our new goods.

Volunteering with St Richard's Hundreds of volunteers help with many aspects of St Richard’s life - from working in its charity shops and fundraising department to supporting patients in their own homes and bringing their life-skills to support the compassionate care the hospice provides. A wide variety of volunteering opportunities are available at St Richard’s, with vacancies based at the hospice in Worcester, at its shops or in the community. Volunteering offers an opportunity to learn skills, meet new people and build confidence and self-esteem. Apart from the wonderful gift of knowing your time is helping others, taking on a volunteer role at St Richard’s could help individuals gain skills that will help enhance anyone’s CV and career. Patients who would like support from St Richard’s Hospice can be referred by their GP, consultant at the hospital, district nurse or other healthcare professional. Our Gateway referral team is also available should a patient, or person close to them, wish to talk to them directly for information or advice. No charge is made to patients and their families for any of our services. This is made possible due to the generosity of our donors, volunteers, suppor ters and local community.
