Heather Moore Dear Parents, Trustees, Faculty and Staff, As the warm days of summer begin to fade, it's with great excitement that we welcome you all back to Strelitz International Academy for the upcoming academic year. The campus is abuzz with energy as we prepare to embark on another year of growth, discovery, and achievement.
Progress on Our Strategic Plan: Charting a Course for Success At Strelitz International Academy, we're not only focused on the present but also committed to shaping a bright future. Our 2022- 2027 strategic plan, which we introduced last year, continues to guide our efforts and elevate our institution to new heights.
Back to School: A Time of Renewal The start of a new school year is always a time of renewal—a chance to set new goals, embrace fresh challenges, and create lasting memories. Whether you're returning to our close-knit community or joining us for the first time, you are an integral part of the vibrant tapestry that makes Strelitz International Academy so special. Our dedicated administration, faculty and staff have been hard at work over the summer, refining curricula, enhancing classrooms, and developing innovative approaches to education that foster both academic excellence and personal development. We're committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment where every student can thrive, and we can't wait to witness the remarkable journeys that lie ahead.

I am thrilled to report that we've made significant strides in achieving the objectives outlined in our strategic plan. From reimagining campus spaces and expanding our footprint, to fostering a culture of collaboration through meaningful partnerships that celebrate the richness of our global community, our progress is a testament to the collective dedication of our entire school community. In the coming months, we will be rolling out exciting initiatives that further support our strategic goals. These include expanded extracurricular offerings such as classes in our early years art studio and maker space, collaborations with other IBⓇ schools and students around the globe, and investments in professional development for our faculty, ensuring they remain at the forefront of educational innovation.
Head of School’s Message Working towards our faculty retention objective, SIA implemented a new health and wellness initiative for faculty and staff to include monthly challenges and seminars on stress management, nutrition and meal planning as part of our faculty retention program. We are also excited to connect and communicate with our SIA community in new and innovative ways. This year we launched SIA, the podcast where our mission is to offer thoughtful and inspiring parenting and educational programming. We are committed to producing impactful podcasts that add value to conversations around education, student advocacy, and parental challenges. We plan to release a new episode every other week, and families can visit our website www.strelitzinternationalacademy.org for more information about episodes as well as resources that relate to each episode. Please give us feedback on our podcast and If you find value in an episode please subscribe, share and follow us. And finally, we are excited to share this new STRELITZ Magazine. This year the magazine will be issued quarterly and offered in both a digital and print format. We will share highlights of what is happening on campus and in the classroom. A Great Day on the Links at the Strelitz International Academy’s 35th Annual Golf Tournament by Carin Simon, Director of Advancement It was another hole in one event for the Strelitz International Academy’s 35th Annual Golf Tournament, affectionately known as the Bob Josephberg Classic, which took place on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at the Virginia Beach National Golf Club. The Bob Josephberg Classic is SIA’s biggest annual fundraiser. This year, with the help of over 100 generous sponsors, the tournament raised almost $150,000. The funds go directly towards the future of Jewish education and community leadership in Tidewater by providing financial sustainability and broader access to SIA for all families. Following opening remarks by David Leon and Babbi Bangel, SIA Golf Tournament Co-Chairs, the players teed off in a Florida best ball style tournament. A brand new Maserati and a Mercedes from Charles Barker Automotive for the hole in one competition sponsored by Charles Barker and Towne Insurance, could be seen at check in. “We are so fortunate for the ongoing commitment and support of our community and business partners who contribute to the success of our Golf Tournament year after year. It is wonderful to see both new and returning golfers who enjoy a great day and the

New this year was the addition of a Silent Auction offering exclusive items for sale including framed Taylor Swift handwritten lyrics and diamond necklace donated by Diamonds Direct which also contributed to our fundraising goal. Making the Shift from Student to Parent Carin Simon (’89) When I graduated from SIA (formerly HAT) 35 years ago, I not only received an amazing education, but I also gained a strong Jewish identity and love of learning. I always knew if given the chance, I wanted the same for my children. Fast forward thirty years, when my son Nate (’18) graduated from SIA and transitioned to middle school, he thanked me for providing such a wonderful foundation. He told me that SIA was the reason he was in all advanced classes. He and his close friend from SIA, Ilan Rivera (’18) now attend the Entrepreneur and Business Academy together at Kempsville High School. My younger son Ari (’21) loved the small class sizes and safe, nurturing atmosphere at SIA and wishes he had that experience in Middle School. As an SIA alum, I feel so fortunate that I had the opportunity to return to SIA with my kids fifteen years ago in the role of parent and staff member. Now as the Director of Advancement, I love seeing the school continue to grow and evolve!
Irina Washburn (’02) Strelitz is not just a school, but it is a community. Being able to provide Palmer with the same community that I was provided growing up is one of the best gifts I feel I can give him. I have fond memories of my time at Hebrew Academy of Tidewater. One of the most memorable was my eighth-grade trip to Eastern Europe. To witness Jewish history with my own eyes was life-altering. I am forever grateful to the teachers who guided me to become the Jewish woman I am today. When the opportunity arose to come on board as a staff member, it felt like a full-circle moment. Being able to give back to the community that raised me has been very fulfilling.
Rashi Brashevitzky (’94) Strelitz International Academy has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember literally! My relationship with SIA began as a bright eyed 3 year old, bouncing off to class each morning to learn new things. My childhood memories are filled with a wide variety of experiences from my time at SIA. There are songs from music class that I have taught my own children, art projects I remember fondly, learning new prayers and their meanings, writing pieces that I still think about, super fun Purim celebrations and the list goes on. Wanting my children to receive the same warm, loving, challenging and engaging Jewish education I enjoyed, they have each attended SIA. It is hard to believe that my youngest is now in the 5th grade. When I moved back to the area, I wanted to have a part in providing this magical education to students in our community - and I have been here ever since! In my work as both teacher and Judaic administrator, I love watching as our students soak in a love for Jewish study and celebration! 14 September 2023
