From the Executive Director Dear Friends, What makes Chicago, well, Chicago?

Is it the skyline, the lake, the neighborhoods, the food, the music, or the unmistakable energy of its streets? I believe it is something deeper: the people who make this city what it is and the organizations that work every day to make it stronger.

For more than 30 years, StreetWise has been part of that fabric.

Since 1992, StreetWise has created economic opportunities for Chicagoans experiencing or at risk of homelessness through meaningful work, supportive services, and the dignity of earning an income. Our vendors are entrepreneurs, storytellers, parents, neighbors, artists, veterans, and Chicagoans who are working to build greater stability and independence.

Every StreetWise story begins with a person and often with a moment when something has come undone. A job is lost. Housing becomes unstable. A health crisis changes everything. An unexpected turn makes the future uncertain. But desperation does not have to be the end of the story.

StreetWise creates an opportunity for the next chapter: an opportunity to earn income, access essential resources, connect with community, share a story, and move forward with dignity.

On September 24, we celebrate that history and look toward what comes next with an evening inspired by the city we call home.

StreetWise Soirée: Interwoven is a celebration of Chicago’s neighborhoods, stories, flavors, and creative spirit. But at its heart, this is more than a celebration. It is an opportunity to invest in the people and programs that make StreetWise possible.

“It was based on what was happening at the time: what kind of situation they were in. I tried to impart to them the knowledge I had gained. I tried to school them in everything, any problem they had, I tried to solve, whether it was financial, personal, whatever. I tried to help them. I served under every executive director except Anthony Oliver.

“In the future, we need to inspire the vendors to keep working because everything is starting to be gentrified. When I first started, we could get a vendor a room just about anywhere in the city. It’s not getting any better since these big corporations are buying these properties and redoing them. We used to have to

spend $15 a night and now it’s $42 a night -- if you can find a place. There are very few overnight [hotels] now.

“If you take a poll of vendors, even the smaller property owners are gentrifying. I hear them tell me they have to relocate because they’re redoing their property where they live at. What I want to say to them is, StreetWise has lived up to its creed. It’s the only true thing that is going on, that has held its principles (“a hand up not a hand out”) and it’s their salvation.

“We lived up to our promise to them (“a hand up instead of a hand out”) we still provide them with the ability to earn a living, a good living. All they gotta do is want to want something. When you think about it, we got people that have graduated from college using StreetWise, we got people that have bought property. We got a lot of vendors that raised their children through selling StreetWise and nothing has changed except I don’t think vendors realize the benefits of StreetWise. They take it for granted.

“Now we got a new generation that don’t believe that fat meat is greasy: they don’t think that what is out there facing them is real.

“They’ve been playing games for so long they think they can game their way through society. They don’t understand you still got to work, that society is closing in on them. There are fewer opportunities for them. Once incarcerated they don’t realize the noose is tightening up.”

StreetWise Magazine Shines : The Aw

StreetWise has continued to win kudos in the past year. The magazine won the International Network of Street Papers (INSP) Award for Best Cover (1). It also won two awards in the National Federation of Press Women professional contest: 3rd place writing for Special Articles/Style for Preservation Chicago’s 7 Most Endangered Buildings (2) (https://issuu.com/streetwise_chi/docs/april_2_-_8_2025) and Honorable Mention for a Magazine for the edition on Barriers to Food Availability for People Who are Unhoused (3) (https://issuu.com/streetwise_chi/docs/september_10_-_16_2025).

The coming year is promising – because the same subjects are still interesting. Preservation Chicago deserves some of the credit for the writing award because of its excellent research and photos, which we used again in a story on union murals rescued from the United Electrical Workers building (4). Architecture is a StreetWise story when it brings value-added to a neighborhood.

Food availability can improve public health through better nutrition. In January, StreetWise joined with City of Chicago Chief Homelessness Officer Sendy Soto to introduce the draft of the City's Five-Year Homelessness Plan for comment.

We are proud of a collaboration with Borderless Magazine in which their reporters found that homeless people waited up to six months at the city’s Shelter Placement and Resource Center (SPARC) amid bed bugs, rats and frequent fights before finding housing (5). (Feb. 23—March 1) This was a year for history, starting with the Cubs’ 150th anniversary (6) (March 23-29) with research on everything from the 1932 “Homer in the Gloamin” to Phil Cavarretta, who was ready to drop out of Lane Tech High School to help support his immigrant family – until his coach got him a tryout with the Cubs, which led to a 20-year career.

Celebrating its 100th year, Route 66 starts in Chicago on its way to Santa Monica and the Pa-

wards & Stories that Shaped the Year cific Coast, so we were interested in how both small towns – and Chicago – capitalize on tourism (7). This year was also the semiquincentennial, or 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, so we asked both vendors and a cross-section of prominent Illinoisans what they wanted for the United States going forward and whether Illinois didn’t have a special duty, given its diversity, to work harder to make the ideals in the Declaration of Independence a reality (8). This story played out ahead of the Fourth of July with a Juneteenth story on Chicago’s efforts to come up with a reparations plan (9).

We did our annual Black Business Month guide (10) and had “Straight Talk” with our own Ron Madere, the StreetWise cashier to the vendors and a Black businessman himself, who just recently retired from our office.

A story on Nathaniel Mary Quinn’s art exhibit at the National Public Housing Museum (11) (July 20-26) was about more than Dutch genre painting and his recent cover for the latest Rolling Stones album. Growing up in the Robert Taylor Homes, there was love in his family that encouraged his early work and enabled him to get a scholarship to an elite prep school; he was able to make a passionate case about the need for public housing.

Similarly, “Remembering Lives Lost” (12) (August 10-16) was about Cook County’s Indigent Burials at Mt. Olivet Cemetery on the far Southwest Side.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, and the Cook County Funeral Directors Association pride themselves on having created a model of respect, complete with white roses mourners can place on the caskets.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle compared the dignified burials to the Cook County Hospital system that brings souls to life – “that every person deserves to be treated in a dignified manner regardless of their circumstances.”

StreetWise Stories Through Their Eyes The Chicago Reporter Selling magazines becomes a lifeline for Chicagoans navigating the intersecting barriers of incarceration, addiction and housing instability, Jack Austin wrote for the Chicago Reporter, in a story repeated in StreetWise (June 8-14).

Austin interviewed Keith Hardiman, who for 30 or 40 years has heard the same refrain, “You don’t qualify.”

Hardiman grew up in the Henry Horner Homes on the West Side before his family moved to the South Side. He switched schools, served in the U.S. Army after high school and trained as an auto mechanic. An arrest in early adulthood led to six years in prison.

After his release, he found that jobs he was otherwise qualified for were definitely out of his reach due to his record.

Then, his mother died of breast cancer in 1998 – when he was 36. “That set me back a whole lot – my family problems.

I was out on the streets for awhile and had a drug addiction.”

For the past 25 years, he’s been sober. And thanks to meeting another StreetWise vendor, he has also sold StreetWise at Michigan avenue and Lake street, from about 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays. He depends on regular customers to reach his daily goal of $50 – enough to afford a room at the Norford Hotel and a meal.

Andrew Allen grew up on the South Side and graduated from Morgan Park High School before a desire to travel led him to Florida – and three years homeless on the beach.

Although Allen’s and Hardiman’s journeys might often be framed as personal choice, M Nelson, a policy manager at the Chicago Coalition to End Homelessness, says that racism is the No. 1 structural driver of homelessness.

It shows up in redlining and the demolition of Chicago Housing Authority units without full replacement. Census data shows that the median household income is $75,000, with significant variation across neighborhoods and many households earning far less. Research from the Institute for Housing Studies at DePaul University shows that Chicago has experienced a long-term decline in the share of rental units affordable to lower-income households, as rents rise faster than incomes and units in many neighborhoods shift from affordable to market-rate.

What Does StreetWise Mean to You? “Everyone struggles with something. Whether it’s a mental or physical disability, poverty, homelessness, or all of the above, they’re still a person,” StreetWise editorial intern Kyra Walker noted in the 2023 gala edition. “StreetWise works with those who are suffering from poverty and/or homelessness, and gives them a job.” Field supervisors John Hagan Jr. and A. Allen – who are themselves vendors -train new vendors on the code of conduct and selling methods: Hagan on Tuesdays and Allen on Thursdays.

StreetWise is, “A lifesaving experience. I’ve become my own boss and gotten clean from addiction,” Keith Hardiman, who sells in front of the Starbucks at 200 N. Michigan Ave., told her. “The people and employees have helped me tremendously. It helps me help others, and I can never go hungry.”

NY Danny Davis, who sells at sporting events and concerts, said he appreciates when the magazine covers local news and does concert guides. Sales for him were just beginning to turn around from the pandemic, Davis said. “Things are getting better slowly but surely, but it’s working.

But back to his job as a field supervisor, Kyra described it as motivating vendors to stay at their assigned selling spots and not to let panhandlers run them away, to be persistent, to show up every day.

He was moving to a new apartment that he found on his own, but a StreetWise social work intern helped him fill out the application and contact his sister, who helped with the deposit and as a co-signer.

I don’t get that large of an income. I do get a little retirement check. It’s not enough to pay my bills. This is like a subsidy. It helps me to pay bills, get extra money for clothing and other things. It’s a very big help to me.

Thirty-four years later, we’re still here because people like you continue to believe that work, opportunity, connection, and a voice can change what’s possible.
