ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

The Music of the Night!

Chicago Sings Broadway’s British Invasion

Porchlight’s annual concert fundraiser highlights Great Britain’s contributions to the biggest hits of Broadway. Chicago music theatre’s leading performers add their signature style to the musical favorites that premiered “across the pond” in this one-night-only event. From early West End successes like “Me and My Girl,” “Oliver!” and “The Roar of the Greasepaint-The Smell of the Crowd,” to the “rock operas,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Chess” and “Evita,” blockbusters including “Phantom of the Opera,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Les Misérables” and recent favorites “Mamma Mia!,” “Six,” “Paddington: The Musical” and others. The one-night-only fundraiser begins at 5:30 p.m. with an open bar and appetizer buffet, and the show starts at 7 p.m. at House of Blues, 329 N. Dearborn St. Tickets are $175-$200 at PorchlightMusicTheatre.org

The Original Meme!

‘Ink & Outrage: 18th Century Satirical Prints in London & Dublin’ The Driehaus Museum, 50 E. Erie St., presents “Ink & Outrage: 18th Century Satirical Prints in London & Dublin,” an exhibition that explores the wit and graphic brilliance displayed by English graphic satirical artists such as James Gillray (1765-1815) and Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827) to lampoon civics, society, and culture in Georgian London. The exhibition places original prints in dialogue with plagiarized works by artists in Ireland, evoking conversations about piracy, originality, and reproduction that have become more relevant than ever today. One could call them the OG meme. On display May 15 to September 13.

From Stills to Motion!

‘Art Shay: An America So Real’ sneak peak Gallery VICTOR (300 W. Superior St.) is hosting a sneak preview, open to the public, of a work-in-progress excerpt from the upcoming film, “Art Shay: An America So Real,” 6-9 p.m. Thursday, May 14. The evening will include an exhibition and silent auction of rare, signed photographs by Art Shay, as well as film contributors Pete Souza, Richard Shay and Sandro Miller. A conversation with the filmmakers will follow. Scheduled for release in early 2027, the feature-length documentary introduces audiences to the extraordinary life and work of one of the most important, yet under-recognized, photographers of the 20th century. As always, the reading will be accompanied by a pre- and post-show book signing. Sunday, May 17, 2-4 p.m. at The Auditorium, 50 E. Ida B. Wells Drive. Tickets start at $70 at AuditoriumTheatre.org

Our favorite summer sports

John: What sports activities are you looking forward to this summer?

Russell: I am looking forward to the NBA Championship games, plus the WNBA Championships. I want to see how well Angel Reese helps the Atlanta Dream, plus the NBA Lottery and the draft – I want to see who the Bulls get – if they mess up again.

But the main thing I want to see is Major League Baseball: the Crosstown Classic. The Cubs play the Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field Friday-Sunday, May 15-17 and at Wrigley Field Monday-Wednesday August 17-19. Also in late August, the NFL pre-season. Soccer games—I watch them too.

Allen: I would like to see what the Chicago Sky do and Angel Reese, too. I will be doing some swimming myself – too bad they don’t have swimming activities to watch in the summer. I looked forward to the Bears draft and to the White Sox doing better than they have in the last two years. They can’t go three years in a row losing 100 games. They could – but they can’t as far as I’m concerned.

John: (Laughing) I am looking forward to the White Sox and the Cubs. I will try to get tickets to the White Sox when they play the Dodgers June 12-14 and when the Cubs play the Dodgers Monday - Wednesday, August 3-5 in a rare interleague matchup. Then, the Sox play the Yankees Monday-Thurs

July 27-30. So I will be at Rate Field in late July. I look forward to swimming too but I don’t do as many summer activities as I used to with my busy schedule.

I may also be going up to Milwaukee to see a game or two.

Russell: I need to go to a baseball game – Cubs or the Sox, doesn’t matter. The Crosstown Classic is FridaySunday, May 15-17 at Rate Field and Monday-Wednesday, August 17-19 at Wrigley Field. I love baseball; it’s simple and easy. Let’s save some money and all go to a game together.

Allen: The Sox tickets should be pretty cheap, so I am pretty sure we can make Russell’s dream come true by going to a Sox game, do a live broadcast there, take pictures.

John: I’d like to go during the week. I am trying to avoid Saturday night because Sunday is a big day for me selling StreetWise at Old St. Patrick’s Church. Even a weeknight would be good.

Green City is the first farmers market in the nation to require all its farmers to meet the requirements of a nationally-recognized third party agency, such as USDA Certified Organic and Animal Welfare Approved. The market operates through March in Avondale. In January, Green City purchased a former garden center at 2457 W. Montrose Ave., which will eventually support its 57 purveyors of fruits, vegetables, baked goods, meats, jams and preserves and other sustainably sourced products from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin yearround. greencitymarket.org

They work in every aspect of farm production and receive training also in professional communication and managing workplace conflict, facilitated by a psychological self-sufficiency program developed by Dr. Philip Hong of Loyola University.
